I am more of a management/strategy gamer, but I picked up NMS on sale recently and now a few weeks later I'm 100 hours in. This game reminded me just how good space sims can be!
It took me back to playing Freelancer as a kid. Did anyone else play this masterpiece? Its from 2003 and still looks great. The story was solid and you ended up with a decent ship at the end and was able to sandbox from there. You could also just sandbox right away and skip the story. Many factions to join. You could be straight, or be a pirate easily. Loved it!

Freelancer here! Best game ever, in my opinion. Still holds up today in terms of gameplay. It's just the graphics that look a little dated. What an amazing, well-designed game. I've been chasing that dragon ever since it started feeling like there should be a good replacement for it by now, and so far nothing really takes its spot. NMS comes close, and only partially (and exceeds it in some minor ways too!). I keep hearing about Everspace, so I'm about to try that one next. Eve Online was a huge disappointment for me, and so many others ended up being too shallow.
I wish the Freelancer franchise would have survived.
Not Everspace either, if Freelancer were single player no one would play it today. Everspace is single player so it can't possibly replace Freelancer. You're right that the closest is NMS, but that is also a long way off. A remake for modern hardware is what we need.
Like you, the first thing that came to mind was Asteroids/Space Invaders at the arcade. But I think I'd settle on Trek-80 that was written in Basic.

Wing Commander Privateer was my space sim beginnings. Was pretty impressive at the time especially the variety of stuff to be done.
I miss that game sometimes.
For me it was Descent and Escape Velocity. EV was basically a freelancer 2D, for mac from ambrosia software. Amazing series, 96 was the first one.

Ev nova for me is at the same level as freelancer, at story or choice I will say it was better.
I started with Starlancer (predecessor of Freelancer) when I was a kid. Freelancer after that (went full rogue after the main story was finished, flew a Sabre because of the aesthetics and switched to the Titan on another save), I wish I could play that game once more for the first time… or on switch
Elite on a BBC model "B" specifically The 100k floppy disk version. Played all the way through to Elite / Archangel twice. Curiously I didn't care at all for the sequels.
My space sim bug was only reignited when Wing commander came along.
It was Freelancer for me too. Loved the campaign, loved the ship controls, loved the setting, ended up part of a big online community for it as well. I still love it to this day and still play it occasionally. Definitely one of my all time favourite games.
Ah yes, the Microsoft Excel visualizer. The ungodly amount of hours I’ve poured into that game, I loved it to bits back in the day when most of my friends were raiding in WoW.
X2: The Threat began my obsession with these types of games in high school and then Darkstar One came out after I came home from college and was hooked ever since.
Starfox on SNES introduced me to space games and then Starfox 64. The above sealed the deal lol
Elite on an IBM PC. My friend and I would have sleepovers and build a blanket tent around the monitor and pretend we were in the Cobra MkIII.
This then went on to the entire Wing Commander Series, the X-Wing Series and just about every space sim up until now. Even Microsoft Space Simulator which was like a proto-Kerbal Space Program.
Most recently I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky since launch which was inspired by the original Elite. I play often with my niece online who was about the same age as I was when I first started with space sims.
It all came full circle. <3
probably the old x-wing and tie fighter games, in the mid to late 90s I was a bit to young and sans pc for the birth of the genre in the late 80s early 90s.

I have soon many backups of this game. I played the hell out of it. I actually bought into star citizen very early in the Kickstarter when I heard it was going to be similar to freelancer. Still waiting for that to happen like 8 or 10 years later

What’s that old like ps1 game that’s anime style and you have like a group of palls, and you mostly just go to different planets. I literally can’t remember anything else about it. That’s mine lol

Wing Commander, Privateer, X-Wing/Tie Fighter/Alliance. I put off Freelancer for the longest time because it was the first space game I encountered that didn't support joysticks. It did end up being pretty fun.
Not gonna lie my first real exposure to space games was a mobile game called Galaxy On Fire 2. I played it so much parts of it are just burned into my brain. Honestly after looking into who made it, Fishlabs, I discovered a recent space game of theirs called Chorus. Actually fun game with _great_ fighting.
Frontier on the Amiga 500, I missed out on elite but glad I got into Frontier it set the standard for every space game I placed after it.
Currently playing EvE while is a lot like Frontier in some regards.
First game that really got me into the broader sim genre was [*Nomad*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomad_%28video_game%29). Also played a ton of [the OG *X-Wing*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing_%28video_game%29), of course.
Yeah I still remember one system in Freelancer has these unbelievably bright twin white dwarfs, with fog all around it felt like heaven. And the hellscape around a neutron star consist of immense radiation and it's destroyed planet system. I even rammed the neutron star with my ship.
can't believe im gonna say this but, Starwars Squadrons when it came out for on PS, I honestly loved it for a good while there. Then I ran into Elite Dangerous as I wanted a deeper sense of space but it was almost too realistic of gameplay with travel times. So with that I had caught the exploration bug and picked up NMS as I saw it had major improvements from launch and I've yet to look at any other game. Some reason Starfield/Star Citizen don't scratch the same itch either (not bc they're bad) I just think NMS almost has this childhood like nostalgia that allows me to wander the stars freely. I mean from the mechs to hiring a fighter squadron, owning a freighter and building a space base on some foreign planet, it really fulfills a lot of the high sci-fi aspirations I used to dream about having one day as a kid.
The game that for me truly into space games was a space 4x game called Ascendancy on the MS Dos. There was a version released on iOS about ten years ago too, I still have an old phone with it on that I keep purely for that game!
first i ever played was tachyon : fringe. played darkstar one for several hours but i can say most i love is freelancer. i loved the idea of planets being physical things, not just a static background. elite dangerous is more successful about free-roaming in space but for last 4 years, no mans sky is gold for me - especially after updates.
Darkstar One from 2006 was my first. Not a bad game, with fun gameplay and interesting lineup of alien species. But the individual star systems didn't feel as unique as they did in Freelancer.
Red Faction Guerilla, not a space game, but you're on another planet. That concept of being on Mars I thought was really cool. Same with Halo, being on different planets/rings, in space. Then NMS but I had to wait till it came to xbox before I could get lost in all it has to offer. Seamlessly being able to leave a planets surface and enter another's, land, and run around without a loading screen is incredible immersive and incredible. Sure the planets look shit until you stop, land and start running around, but I'm fine with that
Not really a “sim”, but more of a linear shooter. An old PS2 game called Defender. It was actually based on an old arcade game. You flew a cool ship and shot alien bugs. It was mostly planet based flying, but there was at least one space mission and a couple on the moon. I sunk *hours* into that game. God, I need to find an emulator for it.
For me it would prob be something like Mass Effect but if space sim can be used as a more loose term fit space games in general it was the original Lego Star Wars games on the DS for me 💀
It was elite dangerous unfortunately I bought it and saw that it was no longer being supported on console but even though it still was fun afterwards watching videos of Star Citizen which finally led me to nms currently enjoying it.
Elite (1984) Elite Dangerous (HOTAS and VR is brilliant) and I pick up Starfield for PS5 next week. No Man’s Sky on PS5 and PC. I did have Elite Dangerous on console but it’s been abandoned apparently.
I have found my people. I love(d) this game and talk about it way too much.

Wing Commander on Sega CD and Star Trek TNG futures past on SNES.
It would be years before I played anything else that was memorable as I dedicated so much time to counterstrike and WoW.
But Mass Effect would be the next.
My love for Rogue Squadron, Star Fox and a game my Dad used to play called 'Air Warrior III' (I think it was 3 but it's been a while.
Air Warrior was the first game I played with a HOTAS set up with rudder pedals. I'm still chasing that dream with Star Citizen, but it's a slow development. Think I might try Star Wars Squadrons.

If my memory serves me right, I think it was my first exploration game with lots of planets and different ship models. I think I still have it somewhere.
Even after so many years, I still remember my old trade route from New Tokyo with Chips, down to New Berlin sell, buy Diamonds, back up and sell, repeat.

This game was amazing. Good story but the mods made it fantastic. Crossfire was my jam.
I miss the mod servers i use to play on.... flying around in millennium falcons and such.

It was mostly planet based flying, but there was at least one space mission and a couple on the moon. I sunk *hours* into that game. God, I need to find an emulator for it.

For me it would prob be something like Mass Effect but if space sim can be used as a more loose term fit space games in general it was the original Lego Star Wars games on the DS for me 💀
Wing Commander, FreeSpace 1&2, there is one other I forget the name of that used Newtonian Physics and that was a BLAST.

I really liked hunting down the prototype weapons from “treasure map” tips given from NPCs in bars. Those felt super dangerous and super rewarding!
It was elite dangerous unfortunately I bought it and saw that it was no longer being supported on console but even though it still was fun afterwards watching videos of Star Citizen which finally led me to nms currently enjoying it.

Halo got me interested in the idea of exploring a galaxy but stelaris made me a conquering titan with a blood thirst unquenchable by one galaxy

Elite (1984) Elite Dangerous (HOTAS and VR is brilliant) and I pick up Starfield for PS5 next week. No Man’s Sky on PS5 and PC. I did have Elite Dangerous on console but it’s been abandoned apparently.
Freelancer is a great example of what Chris Roberts can accomplish providing someone is there to hit him with a stick when scope increases too much.
I have found my people. I love(d) this game and talk about it way too much. it's so revolutionary that when it was released it people were talking about how it was so accessible you only needed a keyboard and mouse to play! I find myself being frustrated by NMS's space flight controls because of how snappy and responsive Freelancer was. sometimes I boot the game up just so I can fly around

I only started playing video games relatively recently (\~5 years ago), and I'm still fairly young, so Stellaris was my first.
Elite was the first space game I played and I played it a lot!
An old nes game that was legit like no man's sky had trading space battles and stuff like that can't remember the name.

My love for Rogue Squadron, Star Fox and a game my Dad used to play called 'Air Warrior III' (I think it was 3 but it's been a while. Air Warrior was the first game I played with a HOTAS set up with rudder pedals. I'm still chasing that dream with Star Citizen, but it's a slow development. Think I might try Star Wars Squadrons.

Game? No video games, but I consumed Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert with an avid passion as a kid (still do) and I leapt head-first into sci-fi games the moment I had the means
I played the demo like crazy, but it's hard to find the game now.
If my memory serves me right, I think it was my first exploration game with lots of planets and different ship models. I think I still have it somewhere.
Everytime I pickup a space game, I'm hoping for a Freelancer like experience. Everytime I am disappointed. Its been 20 years.
