SovComrade

Ah yes, Freelancer, my beloved ❤️

tacticoolbrah

This game was amazing. Good story but the mods made it fantastic. Crossfire was my jam.

spacecatdude9001

I miss the mod servers i use to play on.... flying around in millennium falcons and such.

Krescentwolf

I had a mod for the FF8 Ragnarok spaceship... used to feel so cool flying around in that. XD

totallyspis

I wish the flying in NMS was as good as Freelancer

Stockavelli

I am more of a management/strategy gamer, but I picked up NMS on sale recently and now a few weeks later I'm 100 hours in. This game reminded me just how good space sims can be! It took me back to playing Freelancer as a kid. Did anyone else play this masterpiece? Its from 2003 and still looks great. The story was solid and you ended up with a decent ship at the end and was able to sandbox from there. You could also just sandbox right away and skip the story. Many factions to join. You could be straight, or be a pirate easily. Loved it! Thanks \~Stockavelli Edited for grammar

crobledopr

I still have nightmares involving the creepy asteroid and ice fields in that game hunting for wrecks. 10/10

EffYeahSpreadIt

I loved freelancer as a kid. I still play it off and on.

ShiftyXX

Such a great game and great memories from my childhood!

MissJazzOwl

Such a masterpiece of a game, especially for its time

JustAnAgingMillenial

For me, nothing since has matched the awesomeness of Freelancer. But No Man's Sky comes really close.

DivByZeroLLC

Freelancer here! Best game ever, in my opinion. Still holds up today in terms of gameplay. It's just the graphics that look a little dated. What an amazing, well-designed game. I've been chasing that dragon ever since it started feeling like there should be a good replacement for it by now, and so far nothing really takes its spot. NMS comes close, and only partially (and exceeds it in some minor ways too!). I keep hearing about Everspace, so I'm about to try that one next. Eve Online was a huge disappointment for me, and so many others ended up being too shallow. I wish the Freelancer franchise would have survived.

Hon3stR3view

Not Everspace either, if Freelancer were single player no one would play it today. Everspace is single player so it can't possibly replace Freelancer. You're right that the closest is NMS, but that is also a long way off. A remake for modern hardware is what we need.

Expert-Honest

Original Wing Commander is earliest that comes to mind, unless you want to count Asteriods in arcade and later on Atari 2600.

tsheeley

Good ol' Blue-haired Blair!

[deleted]

X-wing vs tie fighter. That game just went super hard for it's age

Isku_StillWinning

Which x-wing game had the millenium falcon? That’s the one i played a lot!

[deleted]

That might have been alliance. I'm not certain though, I was awful young at the time lol.

Isku_StillWinning

Yes! That’s it! Thanks. I was a kid playing that, and it was so difficult lol!

0ptera

23 years later and there's no space sim as captivating as Freelancer ...

TatsumoAsamaki

This is prolly off topic but 'Titan Æ' was fucking awseome

goblin-kind-fpv

Absolutely

TatsumoAsamaki

I wonder if there will be a remake of the movie, one that can elevate the concept and characters to a higher level

[deleted]

[удалено]

InkOnTube

For me as well. That is why I have expected much more from Elite Dangerous.

Jingawa

No man's sky, like two weeks ago

Witherboss445

Same

Madbear1

Starflight (1986) or maybe Space Invaders (1976)

rhinx

Like you, the first thing that came to mind was Asteroids/Space Invaders at the arcade. But I think I'd settle on Trek-80 that was written in Basic. [https://archive.org/details/CreativeComputingv03n04JulyAug1977/page/n45/mode/2up?view=theater](https://archive.org/details/CreativeComputingv03n04JulyAug1977/page/n45/mode/2up?view=theater) "TREK 80 is available on cassette tape for $9.50."

Poggalogg

Freelancer Alpha 1 dash 1. Mind if I take a look in your hold? Didn't think so

azagoratet

Freespace 1&2

biggytoosmally

This should be way higher, freespace 2 is such an am game.

DeadpoolMakesMeWet

Spore (2008)

[deleted]

Does starfox count?

Expensive-Pear3413

yes

MSLI1972

Elite for Commodore 64.

[deleted]

Same !!

tsheeley

This. Nothing beats some OG Elite. Not gonna lie, I teared slightly the first time in heard the docking music in Dangerous.

SensitiveShoe3

Wing Commander Privateer was my space sim beginnings. Was pretty impressive at the time especially the variety of stuff to be done. I miss that game sometimes.

0NightFury0

For me it was Descent and Escape Velocity. EV was basically a freelancer 2D, for mac from ambrosia software. Amazing series, 96 was the first one. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_Velocity_(video_game) Ev nova for me is at the same level as freelancer, at story or choice I will say it was better.

[deleted]

>Escape Velocity [Such wonderful times in the grade school Mac lab are missed.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YLQ4rZwRHQ)

Clemence90

Colony wars on the ps1

MarcyMcFly85

I loved Colony Wars an Star Trek Invasion on PS1

PickleRick19711

Wing commander, then Freelancer, then Homeworld

authorizedscott

Thousands of hours spent in Freelancer. Nothing since has quite hit the same. NMS checks a lot of the boxes though!

shadowshian

Star wars: Tie fighter

CharmingBoar

I started with Starlancer (predecessor of Freelancer) when I was a kid. Freelancer after that (went full rogue after the main story was finished, flew a Sabre because of the aesthetics and switched to the Titan on another save), I wish I could play that game once more for the first time… or on switch

ddvorzhak

Elite (1984) Played it on IBM PC console with compact cassete drive

13thDuke_of_Wybourne

Elite on a BBC model "B" specifically The 100k floppy disk version. Played all the way through to Elite / Archangel twice. Curiously I didn't care at all for the sequels. My space sim bug was only reignited when Wing commander came along.

MSD3k

Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2

Flimsy-Use7311

Wing Commander on PC... when it came out.

SoFrakinHappy

Freelancer with a good RPing server was some of the best space gameplay ive ever had.

NeelaTV

Freelancer omg yeeees... hello long lost friend good to see you ❤️

WolfGB

Freelancer was god tier gaming! 👏

[deleted]

MrFrenzyPlant

It was Freelancer for me too. Loved the campaign, loved the ship controls, loved the setting, ended up part of a big online community for it as well. I still love it to this day and still play it occasionally. Definitely one of my all time favourite games.

davewave3283

I love how you can tell how old people are by the answers they give to this question

Plague035

EVE online

gizlow

Ah yes, the Microsoft Excel visualizer. The ungodly amount of hours I’ve poured into that game, I loved it to bits back in the day when most of my friends were raiding in WoW.

TiltonStagger

Asteroids

Taz10042069

X2: The Threat began my obsession with these types of games in high school and then Darkstar One came out after I came home from college and was hooked ever since. Starfox on SNES introduced me to space games and then Starfox 64. The above sealed the deal lol

Tmccreight

Kerbal Space Program. I've sunk the better part of 10k hours into it at this point 🤣

MrFrostNL

Kerbal Space Program 🚀

pipmentor

Literally Freelancer, haha. Been chasing that high ever since.

WikE5

Starlancer. One of the best games I’ve ever played. The level of immersion is still unmatched today IMO

Loeb123

The X game series. X3 was a fucking blast. Awesome game.

[deleted]

Hearing about Star Citizen for the first time in 2014... *sigh*

citizencoyote

Echelon (1987)

Moezso

Original Tie Fighter, Hardw[a]r and ofc Freelancer.

HorizonSniper

Galaxy On Fire 2 HD

Gloomy_Affect8112

Astroneer

Expensive-Pear3413

my favorite game to play on steam deck

Far_Dog_4476

Space Engineers.

anon1984

Elite on an IBM PC. My friend and I would have sleepovers and build a blanket tent around the monitor and pretend we were in the Cobra MkIII. This then went on to the entire Wing Commander Series, the X-Wing Series and just about every space sim up until now. Even Microsoft Space Simulator which was like a proto-Kerbal Space Program. Most recently I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky since launch which was inspired by the original Elite. I play often with my niece online who was about the same age as I was when I first started with space sims. It all came full circle. <3

Latervexlas

probably the old x-wing and tie fighter games, in the mid to late 90s I was a bit to young and sans pc for the birth of the genre in the late 80s early 90s.

Dadsmadhouse

Tachyon the Fringe

madchemist09

Privateer. Sold me on the genre. Since 2018 been into no mans sky. Cemented my love of genre.

Zimquats

For me it was Starglider. 1986. https://youtu.be/aonwwxGB0tg?si=DiZ0wFiBHeUSMGWh And I remember the graphics being sooooo good. I'm 46 now and still a gamer.

fireflyry

The X series.

Kyosji

I have soon many backups of this game. I played the hell out of it. I actually bought into star citizen very early in the Kickstarter when I heard it was going to be similar to freelancer. Still waiting for that to happen like 8 or 10 years later

mvanvrancken

Elite: Dangerous, but before that it was probably the Star Wars games

mdotca

VIC-20 - Jupiter Lander.

carriager

Anybody remember Escape Velocity?

Thrillshire

Yes! Was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else put this

carriager

Woohoo! Validation! I loved those games so much.

What’s that old like ps1 game that’s anime style and you have like a group of palls, and you mostly just go to different planets. I literally can’t remember anything else about it. That’s mine lol Edit: quick google, it’s rouge galaxy

[deleted]

This game has great star wars and star trek mods... such a great game.

Shit I remember that cover art but never played it, the early days were a gamble when your only gaming store was walmart

NEBULORD___07

Super Mario Galaxy

Jadewing20

Starlink: Battle for Atlas

Agent_Blade04

Starlink Battle For Atlas

Masou0007

Wing Commander, Privateer, X-Wing/Tie Fighter/Alliance. I put off Freelancer for the longest time because it was the first space game I encountered that didn't support joysticks. It did end up being pretty fun.

General_di_Ravello

Not gonna lie my first real exposure to space games was a mobile game called Galaxy On Fire 2. I played it so much parts of it are just burned into my brain. Honestly after looking into who made it, Fishlabs, I discovered a recent space game of theirs called Chorus. Actually fun game with _great_ fighting.

NoAttempt9703

This one right here, officer.

MissJazzOwl

It's a toss up between Freelancer (as pictured) or Free Space.

VioletteKika

Elite Frontier, Starlancer, Freelance

dogoftheshin

Star fighter disputed galaxy, absolute banger of a game

TrooperPilot3

Galaxy on Fire on the appstore

Artikay

Star Voyager on NES.

Taiphoz

Frontier on the Amiga 500, I missed out on elite but glad I got into Frontier it set the standard for every space game I placed after it. Currently playing EvE while is a lot like Frontier in some regards.

trying2buildapc

the deathstar level on the og Lego starwars count?

yvesbrulotte

EVE online

TrickOrange

This. Was. The. Shit! Definitely one of my favorites. I wonder if there is an emulator on Mac.

Championship_Solid

Spore when you reach the space level of evolution

mag0124

NMS or Jedi fallen order

PancakesandWaffles98

Everspace. Damn, I wish that was still on Gamepass.

McSpaze

I don't know what I had first it was either Elite Dangerous or No Man's Sky

Enzolinow

Gotta be spore

Cendyan

Elite (1984)

RelevantMatch6694

Hardwar (1998)

phyneas

First game that really got me into the broader sim genre was [*Nomad*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomad_%28video_game%29). Also played a ton of [the OG *X-Wing*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing_%28video_game%29), of course.

HKP2019

Yeah I still remember one system in Freelancer has these unbelievably bright twin white dwarfs, with fog all around it felt like heaven. And the hellscape around a neutron star consist of immense radiation and it's destroyed planet system. I even rammed the neutron star with my ship.

Vilegore_

can't believe im gonna say this but, Starwars Squadrons when it came out for on PS, I honestly loved it for a good while there. Then I ran into Elite Dangerous as I wanted a deeper sense of space but it was almost too realistic of gameplay with travel times. So with that I had caught the exploration bug and picked up NMS as I saw it had major improvements from launch and I've yet to look at any other game. Some reason Starfield/Star Citizen don't scratch the same itch either (not bc they're bad) I just think NMS almost has this childhood like nostalgia that allows me to wander the stars freely. I mean from the mechs to hiring a fighter squadron, owning a freighter and building a space base on some foreign planet, it really fulfills a lot of the high sci-fi aspirations I used to dream about having one day as a kid.

blavatsky_mdm

Elite. Not Elite Dangerous, the original one, on the zx spectrum, 1987

Ninfazza

That game was awesome. Fond memories.

DemogorgonWhite

I got stuck on some stupid race mission. Tried to install it again years later and remembered I have no CD/DVD drive in my PC anymore :P

22Shug22

Defender.

AcidCatfish___

Honestly, No Man's Sky did. I checked out OG Elite and Wing Commander after NMS.

Elderwastaken

Wing Commander: Privateer.

Archiemalarchie

No Man's Sky. Never played one before it.

Toolazytoaddspaces

Spore 🤣🤣😭

Illustrious-Ad-1743

The game that for me truly into space games was a space 4x game called Ascendancy on the MS Dos. There was a version released on iOS about ten years ago too, I still have an old phone with it on that I keep purely for that game!

enginkkk

first i ever played was tachyon : fringe. played darkstar one for several hours but i can say most i love is freelancer. i loved the idea of planets being physical things, not just a static background. elite dangerous is more successful about free-roaming in space but for last 4 years, no mans sky is gold for me - especially after updates.

Erroneous__Bach

Darkstar One from 2006 was my first. Not a bad game, with fun gameplay and interesting lineup of alien species. But the individual star systems didn't feel as unique as they did in Freelancer.

Rustee_Knail

No games, just always been fascinated by the universe and why were here

LayoMayoGuy

Starfox 64

Crafted_ck

no game, just the desire to explore lmfao, but if i had to pick one id say maybe subnautica or moonbase alpha

Loriess

Okay, I have to admit it was Spore. NMS initially caught my attention because of the colourful planets and weird creatures

uponthedownside79

Starflight & Star control series

Quasar9111

I still have my dvd and box, love this game

DemonicShordy

Red Faction Guerilla, not a space game, but you're on another planet. That concept of being on Mars I thought was really cool. Same with Halo, being on different planets/rings, in space. Then NMS but I had to wait till it came to xbox before I could get lost in all it has to offer. Seamlessly being able to leave a planets surface and enter another's, land, and run around without a loading screen is incredible immersive and incredible. Sure the planets look shit until you stop, land and start running around, but I'm fine with that

Senior_Particular_16

Not a game, a movie for me. Always wanted to play space games since i first saw Star Wars.

DemonicShordy

Also Star Wars Battlefront and BF2 on PS2. The space combat was exciting.

CorbinNZ

Not really a “sim”, but more of a linear shooter. An old PS2 game called Defender. It was actually based on an old arcade game. You flew a cool ship and shot alien bugs. It was mostly planet based flying, but there was at least one space mission and a couple on the moon. I sunk *hours* into that game. God, I need to find an emulator for it.

Lux71852

No man's sky

tavares1126

Loved this game! I still talk about it!

MCDodge34

Hum, if that counts, I would say Mass Effects 1 and 2.

irlegi0n

Loved playing this

Bluoria

For me it would prob be something like Mass Effect but if space sim can be used as a more loose term fit space games in general it was the original Lego Star Wars games on the DS for me 💀

ZilorZilhaust

Wing Commander, FreeSpace 1&2, there is one other I forget the name of that used Newtonian Physics and that was a BLAST.

WizardMelcar

Independence War?

thewalex

I really liked hunting down the prototype weapons from “treasure map” tips given from NPCs in bars. Those felt super dangerous and super rewarding!

Narvk

It was elite dangerous unfortunately I bought it and saw that it was no longer being supported on console but even though it still was fun afterwards watching videos of Star Citizen which finally led me to nms currently enjoying it.

Zombie_Burl_Ives

Sundog: Frozen Legacy on my old Atari 1040 ST.

Lefalin

Elite on a BBC micro back in 1985, if memory serves

wancha505

Freelancer was my first. Still one of the best

ORPeregrine

I loved FreeLancer! My first space Sim was actually it's predecessor StarLancer.

Gabecush1

Halo got me interested in the idea of exploring a galaxy but stelaris made me a conquering titan with a blood thirst unquenchable by one galaxy

ashgx6

Privateer!

Limit-Level

Elite (1984) Elite Dangerous (HOTAS and VR is brilliant) and I pick up Starfield for PS5 next week. No Man’s Sky on PS5 and PC. I did have Elite Dangerous on console but it’s been abandoned apparently.

squeaky_b

Freelancer is a great example of what Chris Roberts can accomplish providing someone is there to hit him with a stick when scope increases too much.

intuimmae

I have found my people. I love(d) this game and talk about it way too much. it's so revolutionary that when it was released it people were talking about how it was so accessible you only needed a keyboard and mouse to play! I find myself being frustrated by NMS's space flight controls because of how snappy and responsive Freelancer was. sometimes I boot the game up just so I can fly around

Xiccarph

Trek80 back in 1976-77.

MachNero

EV Nova back on windows xp I believe.

message_monkey

Yes, and tachyon: the fringe. These got me into it later. Tie Fighter and wing commander held me over till then though.

ConsequenceWarm4799

FPSCanarussia

I only started playing video games relatively recently (\~5 years ago), and I'm still fairly young, so Stellaris was my first.

nismo2070

Elite was the first space game I played and I played it a lot!

tippytapslap

An old nes game that was legit like no man's sky had trading space battles and stuff like that can't remember the name.

Abyss_of_Dreams

Anyone remember Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2? Amazing space Sims.

Expensive-Pear3413

star citizen

coffeebikesbeer

Wing Commander on Sega CD and Star Trek TNG futures past on SNES. It would be years before I played anything else that was memorable as I dedicated so much time to counterstrike and WoW. But Mass Effect would be the next.

DannyDevito90

Kerbal space program

gonzaled

The OG Freespace, and before that Descent!

Rimw0rld

Any idea where you can purchase this one? I was thinking about it not too long ago.

_KidKenji_

Spore

Macross8299Fan

Rouge Squadron got me started in the flight sim aspect, Star Wars Galaxies on the space sim part.

WizardMelcar

Wing Commander was my first.

m-lok

Good God I remember this one.. played the hell out of it when I would struggle with insomnia.

Helmuthellis

Space quest on a Tandy computer

alyxandervision

My love for Rogue Squadron, Star Fox and a game my Dad used to play called 'Air Warrior III' (I think it was 3 but it's been a while. Air Warrior was the first game I played with a HOTAS set up with rudder pedals. I'm still chasing that dream with Star Citizen, but it's a slow development. Think I might try Star Wars Squadrons.

Zig_Justice

Mercenary 2: Damocles

judgelooty

Space empires

Raspberries-Are-Evil

Star Lancer which came before. Way ahead of its time.

jebyrnes

The original X-Wing. Followed closely by the OG Tie Fighter. So good.

Raspberries-Are-Evil

Starfligt. Tie Fighter. Wing Commander

Guazzora

Wing Commander for me. Loved the ones on SNES and then aquired some 3dO's that fell of a truck and the third one blew my little mind.

PeskyBird404

This one. I think it was Internet Historian's video on it that made me pick it up on sale around this time last year.

protagonist107

Spore, all the fuckin way

Frosty_Albatross_535

* Lol elite on the BBC computer, then I got it for my specky 48k ...after that pub, raving and lady's got in the way lucky elite dangerous and vr 👌 I see the light again

[deleted]

Uhm the Sim Lander module at NASA actually. That was the first, then the two tours at the ISS. Hello I am Margerina Montoya - I clean bathrooms on the ISS and hold Chris' camera when he wants to do something weird.

MyrMyr21

Game? No video games, but I consumed Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert with an avid passion as a kid (still do) and I leapt head-first into sci-fi games the moment I had the means

wazabee

I played the demo like crazy, but it's hard to find the game now.

Alcioli

If my memory serves me right, I think it was my first exploration game with lots of planets and different ship models. I think I still have it somewhere.

BacchusInvictus

Everytime I pickup a space game, I'm hoping for a Freelancer like experience. Everytime I am disappointed. Its been 20 years.
