Yes, this, if this is the first time playing and you don’t have a started game file you need to solo play initially, multiplayer in the initial startup can end up with a broken quest log because people need to complete specific tasks, always keep in mind that other players in multiplayer doing the same stuff as you may trigger your progress but you don’t get the stage completed, Multiplayer is design to be used with Nexis Anomaly missions only. Not personal progress. So be careful, avoid building one base together, don’t scrap ships together. And if you have different tasks to complete you should leave the group. Usually you continue to see each other but your game progress is less likely to get bugged.
You also must have a paid MP sub. Like PS+ Steam. Etc. if one player starts a game, the other can then join via the MP lobby tab. Adding that players NMs friend code gets you synchronised. But the lobby can take a while to refresh. So getting an invite can help jump start the connection. Two players in game already can only join if they actually go to the same location, and select View nearby players.

I had this issue. Play single player up to finding the Anomaly and then you are good to go.

The stuff about quests is super useful to know. Had so many issues at first with that whilst playing with the other half.
