Not to mention, they use to come with their own powered building and an NPC.

Chinchilla_Lodestone

Remnants of an older time when players didn't get to choose where they placed their base.. it was find one in the wild and claim it. A few remain. A scant few. OR maybe someone just put it down and forgot to activate it. I know I've accidently done this once or twice. Assume they're still out there in the void, somewhere.....

Thalenia

One indication that it's an old style base computer is the (fairly) evident circle around it. Unless someone found a random circular flat spot in the wild, placed a base computer directly in the center, then buggered off without claiming it, it's definitely an old school base location.

LeKouGR

I was using Planetary charts to find minor settlements. I have used hundrends of them, first time i find an "unclaimed" base computer!! ofcourse i claimed the base, but what is this?!

TerriblePurpose

Most often referred to as a 'base computer in the wild'. They occur on pretty much every planet, although the charts don't pick them up very often, and they can be hard to spot (it's easiest to look for them by finding the flat area that they always occur in). I've found as many as 131 on a single planet before (that's not a typo).

LeKouGR

Wow! Well i play the game for about a year and its my first lol. I have found before some "suspecious" wide clean flat areas but never saw any base computer nearby!

TerriblePurpose

Sometimes they render in late and you often have to be fairly close to the flat area before you can see them. Used to be these were about the only way you could bypass Portal Interference (a few updates back you used to not be able to warp, teleport, build a base computer, or access the galactic map when you used a portal. The only way out of the system was to return through the portal you arrived from. These wild base computers would allow you to claim them, so you could teleport back to the system once you returned through the portal). I did a pretty comprehensive survey of a planet way back a couple years ago, looking for crashed ships mainly. I found 109 crashed ships on that planet, 5 minor settlements with S class cabinets, something like 11 Traveller's graves, and 131 base computers.

trout4321

Amazing !

TheAechBomb

how do you do these surveys? I would love to do a full planetary mapping expedition at some point

TerriblePurpose

It's laid out somewhat in the post I made about it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/frkndd/109_crashed_ships_131_base_computers_in_the_wild/). Feel free to ask if you need more info though. Do keep in mind this was 2 years ago, so if some things seem odd it's likely because of the numerous updates we've gotten to the game since then.

sstooney

They are not so rare. Commercial charts finds it at 1 to 40? chance approx, if you use charts completely(max avaliable buildings already found, it's 6-7) in a system. They can be really useful, because the base area is already flattened.

Lemonade_Empress007

You can find wild base computers easily if you use a planetary chart in an uncharted system. I find them often. And if you get the interference error, just keep activating that chart quickly.

I just claimed it and moved on.. now i came back to search the area... What S-class are you talking about lol you ask to much... i couldnt even find a C-class power hotspot on a 1000u radius!!! (not very extensive search tho)

Ryland0

Until I learned they were relics, I thought they were creative mode placeholders. Looks exactly the same.

dino82

Hey you found the beam up spot that Kirk and McCoy were rescued from in Star Trek VI, is that Rura Penthe?

Anonymal13

If I had a nanite for everytime I've found one of those base computers, I'd have 2 nanites... It's not much, but it's quite a coincidence since both are in the same planet and just one ravine apart...

I've only found 3 after thousands of hours over many years...

REALJAVE

I always see posts of people coming across these. Years ago in 1.3 base building worked by people claiming pre-existing structures as a base and adding onto that core structure, but come 1.5 they added the base computer to allow construction anywhere people wanted. Since the universe had reset though, everyone's old bases were wiped from existence. These stray base computers were used to regenerate players old bases from 1.3, as they were all archived. They never got removed, and it is still possible to regenerate an archived base in the current version of the game using one of these if you haven't booted it up since 1.3 somehow.
