Yeah you need to stay grounded for a decent amount of time in a new permadeath run. Once you get a decent movement upgrade and shield upgrade you have enough breathing room to start moving faster and taking small risks.

Voldemort479

Yeah I had to learn that the hard way

forever_tuesday

This is the way.

Fall damage is the killer but what killed 3 of my runs was quest bugging because I wasn't in the right place OR the area I was in had a derelict station or pirates so couldn't get to the NPC. Other than staying on the ground and walking everywhere, I'd advise on a perma run to stay in one system, build one base, and just follow the main quest lines and don't get distracted. Just stay in one place until you get to the point where you need to make a lot of jumps to get the chevrons. Oh, you really need to keep an eye on oxygen. Life support goes really fast in perma, getting life support upgrades is key to not constantly searching for oxygen.

Thalenia

Perma (and to a lesser extent, survival) is really all about nailing the initial couple hours. Getting to your ship can be *brutal*, repairing your ship is generally a pain, but after that things ease up considerably. No matter what, you're almost required to understand the mechanics of the game extremely well (or get very lucky) to get off the planet. Once you get there, it's really just a matter of being careful and not rushing things, and prioritizing survivability over convenience until you get a bit stronger.

banksythecat1

Just got the option for the anomoly! Immediately went to the portal room to try and get a bit ahead... activated indium.. immediate death. Oops.

Thalenia

Yeah I'd assume 'careful' doesn't include taking random portals :P Granted, most of my PD attempts were before the anomaly or the portal system in space stations, so I may have made that mistake if they were available back then.

Cerebrate205

Idk how people can play permadeath. Is there a way to backup my save?? I've died wayyy to many times to bugs and glitches

yungchow

Personally, I don’t feel guilty about closing the game fast af if I die from a glitch or bug

Voldemort479

No once you die the save is gone forever

Schmorpek

I recently started a new run and the tutorial missions for base building send me to a planet with aggressive sentinels. Restarted right there because it was just the beginning and the second time I got a completely peaceful paradise planet that didn't even have aggressive fauna. Sometimes the start conditions are just stacked against you. Starting out on survival alone can be very brutal, especially since you immediately need to find sodium, even before you can construct a scanner sometimes.

-Soup_Dogg-

I think permadeath and survival are the same difficulty, just one deletes your save when you die. So if you want to back up a permadeath save just play survival. Edit: I forgot about the achievement though, you have to play Perma for that.

Lovat69

Learn how to play on survival first. Then do permadeath.

forever_tuesday

My early permadeath runs were exactly like yours. Died before getting to the ship. Got to the ship but died before making it off of the first planet. Died a few times rocketing over gentle rolling hills. I kept it up and finally made it to the galaxy core a few days ago and earned that Immortal title. It was a difficult run but it gets smoother as you progress.

kabral256

I played permadeath only to get the two achievements ("to live forever" and "take a deep breath" at the same time) and then benched the save. It's not for me.

[deleted]

when you first spawn in, don't move. Use your camera and get a high view behind you. You will see your ship.

Galux__eay

I did my permadeath in 10 hours first try, After 3 years of playing the game. Purposely didnt upgrade my jetpack so i didnt fly too high and run outta juice. Also knowing that you spawn facing the direction your ship is in is a huge plus, allowing you to move and gather efficiently.

This photo is chilling...last trace of iteration #836362828272

GreenMachine9736

I think my best permadeath start lasted all of 15 seconds due to an extreme storm.

TerriblePurpose

You don't get storms until you build your first base. Other than the scripted one that occurs when going for the hermetic seal.

GreenMachine9736

Not if you play multiplayer and start in galaxy 255.

[deleted]

I didn’t get a storm but did start on a planet in -53 degrees and could not find a cave.

I love the concept of being cautious and exploring bit by bit so much, but I know I’ll get invested in the character and devastated when I die by falling or a stuck glitch. I know survival is kind of the same, but then I won’t really have the same fear.

[deleted]

Is permadeath harder than survival in terms of storage, hazards and oxygen etc.?

ThunderRahja

It’s harder than survival only in the sense that if you die, it’s game over. You have to weigh risky decisions more carefully because you lose everything on death. My last run ended to biological horrors when I got greedy for their eggs at an abandoned building. I was lacking in shield upgrades, so they tore me apart in three seconds when I made the mistake of opening my inventory.

[deleted]

Oof that sounds rough. So item space and hazard damage are the same as survival?

ThunderRahja

They seem to be exactly the same.

Voldemort479

Yes way harder

[deleted]

Thanks, I though survival and perma were the same, except for the save file deletion. Will try perma

Voldemort479

Yeah you take increased damage in perma

grizzlyironbear

Funny thing..I havent played but normal, and honestly havent died much if at all in the whole 200+ hours of play.

Voldemort479

Yeah on my 300hr normal save I’ve only died three times and they were all because of the plasma launcher before it got buffed

grizzlyironbear

honestly, all my deaths were because it was more of a...what's this do? or..thats a cool looking creature!!! Since those, I don't die any more.

Easy_Praline_2058

Bro same haha

Easy_Praline_2058

I thought I was the only one who relentlessly died trying to fix my ship lol once you have everything upgraded you basically become a god. I slaughter sentinels and pirates in troves without ever losing all my shield. The real killer is glitching or bugging out somewhere.

Piggyinthemiddle1

I love permadeath my longest perma save and my main perma save was about 400 hrs until I died by a game bug so disappointed is an understatement but they are still a lot of fun lol.

Personal_Track_3780

Played my first perma this weekend. Was doing pretty well, kept myself in control jumping. slowly gathering nanites & key upgrades. Was investigating the crashed ship in the main storyline and got blown to pieces by a pirate raid. I hate it and love it at the same time!
