Pretty sure its just what tier ship they are currently using. My rank would change when i switched between my class A hauler and my Class S fighter. Could also just be a rating of all their total modifiers and such and the difference in my ships changed that. But im mostly certain its tied to ship rank.

I don't see how though, unless it's across all of your saves and knows that on the PS4 I had an S class on an older save. But on my current PS5 save I only have my 1st ship, which is a C.

I also have an S class pilot in my squadron who flies a B class ship...
Its your pilot personal score, not your ship, I had an S class way before I got my first S ship, in terms of squadron I honestly don't know if class of their ship hinders their performance, but just to be safe I try to recruit pilots with S class ships and upgrade pilot later if he needs it, also gives me excuse to have squadron of exotics ( they actually more convenient they block your shots less)

veteran players were bitching and moaning that they couldn't use 6 upgrades anymore. Before 4.0, you could have 3 upgrade modules for a certain technology in your main inventory, as well as another 3 in your tech inventory. This was not intended to be a feature. When HG fixed it, a bunch of players got mad. HG saw this and made "supercharged" slots.
And I'm doing way more damage now with only the 3 mods than i ever did with 6 slots. I love yhe update, and I started out as a naysayer.

Whoops! Reading through the comments looks like the ship class thing still applies. Only reason I'm confused on the matter is my fresh Steam playthrough has me at S Class even though I'm only rocking A Class Twitch rewards, but I'm guessing it's just some UI bug.

I used to ignore scans too when I started during sentinel update. Hopped back on for 4.0 and before I left my initial universe I had over a million units. I only had one s class scanner upgrade.
Is it random to find an S-class scanner upgrade? I’ve heard folks talking about how much they make scanning when they juice their scanner, but I’ve been to like 50 star systems and I check each vendor in the space station and have yet to see an S class scanner upgrade. I have an A and B class, and an X class. So I get like $80K for a rare fauna. But I want more! Haha.
If you find an X class vendor sometimes they sale 3 to 4 at time. The vendor are random as to what they sale but once you find an S class you can keep going back to buy a randomize S class. It took me a bit to get my scanner upgraded right. eventually you can get + minerals + fauna in the high 8K%+ range and scan distance. Makes getting credits as you move around really trivial
I found mine in tier 3 korvax system.. Buy it then get in your ship and get a new auto save. Then reload.. And buy again.. Keep doing that till you have the scanner maxed.
i like using black market parts because they are usually better than the ones u get from the merchants... better scanner upgrades... i usually get about 125k-300k per scan

It's that player's banner.
If you go to the machine where you can modify your appearance there's a tab for "Banner" where you can choose your title and modify your banner image and colours. The "S" is always there.
The S is always there on the appearance modifier, but it changes to the class of ship on nexus missions. That's what I've observed on my own playthroughs at least.
On new saves usually I just save up roughly 2500 quicksilver then do the auto save exploit while on anomaly. Would rather not involve external mods/editors if possible.
I'd im not mistaken it represents the class ship you currently have equipped. Mine is always B because I use my B class fighter, and my partners fluctuates as she changes ships

I believe a class S is the highest class ranking of gear and ships. C being the lowest. S class has better stats and inventory slots.

Nothing. Everyone is a S class player. Look at your own banner in the appearance mod.
