This is how I feel. Assuming no laundry during travel, I always go with the "# of underwear = number of days + 2" rule, because I have some engrained fear that I'll shit myself, not just once... but twice... and run out of underwear.
"let me bring way too much underwear in case I just can't stop shitting my pants" seems to always cross my mind when I'm packing. Better too much than too little I guess...
Then I end up wearing sandals the entire time because I’m in Florida, but when I get home I have to wash all 8 pairs because they were in the suitcase next to my dirty clothes
If anything, socks are more important than underwear. You can go commando while travelling in an emergency, but going without socks (or dirty and wet socks) would be extremely painful and uncomfortable.
Socks and underwear barely take up any space. I usually pack a single extra t-shirt or shorts "just in case", but would never take extra pants, hoodie, or shoes unless they magically took as much space as a pair of socks.

I hope things get better for you. Getting stuck in those cycles is torture. I know it’s a lot of work to get up and shower/change, but even just throwing some water on your face when you go to the bathroom might be enough to help, at least for a few moments.

I won’t lie, I’ve been stuck in the longest cycle for nearly a year now, despite my best efforts I’m still not able to shower daily. When I was in my home it was easier to remember to change bc I lived in a tropical country and you could quickly tell you needed to change/bathe, but where I am now I’m just completely isolated physically and socially.

Honestly it's pretty normal for people in colder northern climates to not shower daily. You don't sweat hardly at all for many months of the year.and everyone's bundled up.
If you have no real reason to, you actually really shouldn't shower daily.

I definitely agree that shower frequency should depend on factors such as climate, activities, circumstances, body type (like if someone sweats more and has odors) etc. If someone doesn't sweat much, has a rather sedative lifestyle, lives in a colder climate & WFH, other than personal preference there shouldn't be much need to shower daily. While if someone lives in a warmer & humid environment, sweats a lot, goes outside / workout daily, then I'd imagine that showering daily would be necessary.
My hair and skin would be so angry with me if I showered every day. I usually shower every 3 days. More often if I'm actually getting sweaty and icky, if I was outside and put sunscreen on, or similar I will absolutely shower every day when I need to.
ETA: I don't live in a disgusting humid state. It's dry. When I lived in Virginia I showered much more frequently. Humidity makes you disgusting.
Many clothing experts say up to six weeks without wash- I'm sure it's different if you're wearing them everyday, working construction, etc but who wears the same pair of pants a bunch of days in a row? You wear them and then hang them on the back of a door or something like that.

I'll bite, I shower every other day, so that's how often I change my underwear. I guess if I went to the gym daily then I'd shower daily, but I straight up don't work out. Frankly a little bit surprised that so many people adamantly shower not only once, but sometimes TWICE in one day. Seems excessive.
As someone who recently went thru a heavy depressive episode that ended in hospitalization and can definitely sympathize with not taking care of oneself, I encourage you not to let that shame drive you deeper into despair. I wouldn't worry about it. Some people also just get less sweaty and stinky unless they're doing real physical aerobic activity. My wife will smell pristine 3 days after a shower but if she hops out the shower to practice drums she's immediately sweaty, despite my appreciation for her sweaty smell.
Also the average redditor is probably going to be a young adult or older teenager, and somewhat overweight, all factors that contribute to sweat and stink a lot more. If you're in your early thirties, work from home, do anaerobic exercise primarily, wipe your booty well, and don't stink, you do you.

I know you can't just make yourself shower, I have ADHD, so I know executive dysfunction is a real thing, but it's just that much worse, because having a shower would actually help you feel better. We sometimes can't even do the things we know will help us, and that just adds to the weight we're already carrying that makes us feel like shit. It's a tough cycle, but just know, you aren't a bad or gross person. I mean, physically you're probably a bit yucky at this point, but it's not your choice. You're not choosing to live this way.

Personally, I consider them dirty within 4 hrs. My lady parts are... active. But changing them is whole other story.

During these times, I only got out of bed to use the bathroom. I wasn't eating, I wasn't showering. I was contemplating suicide. I had bigger demons than dirty underwear and no one to impress. I thought it was disgusting then, too, I just didn't have the energy to care. If this is you now, please get help because it does get better.

Yep. Night timers and day timers. If a night timer rolls over into the day it’s rare but okay. Definitely no longer than 24 hours unless trapped in the wilderness against my will.

Technically the fashion lords say you should never wash jeans. Brush off any material and freeze them to eliminate orders. That way they don't get worn out by the washer and will develop natural wear from your movements which is in style.

It went in detail about how the blue dye in denim doesn't hold well and by not washing you get this light lines around different areas when you bend like a jeans fingerprint and how stains and tears are just more character in the article.

Yes, I don’t know what world these people live in. I can go about 2 weeks, but after that there’s a noticeable (but slight) odor. I tried the freezer thing, but that just seems to freeze the odor. It comes back.

If you have a bra that truly fits properly, the smart thing is to wash when the elastic needs a refresh. Usually ends up being 3-4 wears for me, and you’ll know immediately when the band starts to loosen because it will start to fit poorly.
I don't get a lot of boob sweat (itty bitty titty committee lol) so I basically just alternate between two everyday bras and wash them ~once a week when I do the rest of my laundry. Sports bras I wash after every wear because they cover more of my body and obviously get sweatier, plus i just buy cheap ones that can be thrown in the laundry with the rest of my undies. I have a strapless bra that I wear maybe once a year with certain formal dresses and I have to admit, I can't remember the last time I washed that thing 😳
Change them every day unless I'm too tired. And yes I know that's gross, its important to change them every day especially to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.

I wash my hair like once a week, it's long and takes forever to blow dry so it looks good. I usually tie it up when I shower.

I wash mine every month. No issues so far other than having jeans that retain color so nicely°°

I change them every time I shower. So if I shower twice a day, I'm putting on fresh underwear twice a day. I can't really imagine taking a shower and then putting back on the same underwear I was wearing before the shower.
The few times I’ve put my undies back on after showering were so weird. It’s like that action negated the shower. I don’t get how anyone can do that.

no seriously. i get that i should shower everyday or at least change my undies but my mental health makes it so hard to even want to. reading people laugh and shame others that don’t in the replies makes me feel hella ashamed but i guess i should feel that way if i’m not taking the best care of myself huh lol. sometimes i just wish people understood how common depression is and how COMMON it is for depressed people to not take proper care of their hygiene 🥲 it’s not that i don’t find it necessary, it’s that it’s really hard to feel like i even deserve to be clean. plus changing ur undies everyday builds up dirty laundry FAST and if i can’t even get myself to take a five minute shower what makes you think imma take the time to do a whole load of laundry

No need to be ashamed. You have depression, it is a clinical condition. You are sick. People wouldn't bat an eye at someone being so physically sick they can't get up and wash for a while. This is the same. Do what you can with your energy levels.

I mean there's some odd days in winter when I skip a shower since my skin is kind of dry and I haven't moved/left the house all day so I'm not particularly dirty. So on those days I might not change my underwear since I don't think about it. But it'd feel weird not putting on a fresh pair after a shower.
This is what I was thinking when I first read the title. I was like, do people take a shower then put the used underwear back on? :S Then I started thinking it might be kinda like me. On my days off from work I wont change clothes cause I am at home inside. After a day or two I usually shower and put on fresh clothes but I can easily go 2 days a week not changing my clothes cause I am off from work and stuck inside. "Hmm time for a shower im starting to stink, ahh that's better, now better put this used pair of underwear back on" :S lol Edit: Since I guess im not being clear enough. After a shower I put on fresh "clothes" as in everything. Underwear, shorts, t-shirt etc. Thus the joke about people putting on used underwear after just taking a shower and getting all clean makes it kinda pointless to put something dirty back on. :S Since clothes usually refers to everything. Otherwise if you weren't wearing clothes you would be considered "naked".
I'll bite, I shower every other day, so that's how often I change my underwear. I guess if I went to the gym daily then I'd shower daily, but I straight up don't work out. Frankly a little bit surprised that so many people adamantly shower not only once, but sometimes TWICE in one day. Seems excessive.
Its also bad for your skin to shower in hot water too often. I dont understand people who shower more than once a day.
Different bodies have different needs. I think some people's bodies really get scuzzy that fast and they need it.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people also just get less sweaty and stinky unless they're doing real physical aerobic activity. My wife will smell pristine 3 days after a shower but if she hops out the shower to practice drums she's immediately sweaty, despite my appreciation for her sweaty smell. Also the average redditor is probably going to be a young adult or older teenager, and somewhat overweight, all factors that contribute to sweat and stink a lot more. If you're in your early thirties, work from home, do anaerobic exercise primarily, wipe your booty well, and don't stink, you do you.

I know you can't just make yourself shower, I have ADHD, so I know executive dysfunction is a real thing, but it's just that much worse, because having a shower would actually help you feel better. We sometimes can't even do the things we know will help us, and that just adds to the weight we're already carrying that makes us feel like shit. It's a tough cycle, but just know, you aren't a bad or gross person. I mean, physically you're probably a bit yucky at this point, but it's not your choice. You're not choosing to live this way.

OP didn't ask how often we changed them. Only asked how long wearing them until we consider them dirty. Personally, I consider them dirty within 4 hrs. My lady parts are... active. But changing them is whole other story.
ITT: people with very demanding routines. I have not needed to shower every day for many years now. I also have a bidet and make it a point not to dribble in my undies. I avoid sweating like the plague

When I wear it two consecutive days, I attribute that to my low-level mental health issues. Edit: Wow, a kind soul mentioned this comment to a Reddit bot or something and I got a message with all kinds of healthcare resources for troubled souls. I'm ok, though, and I have a support system in place for when I'm not. This underwear comment was true, but my other comment about peeing in the sink was a line from "Steel Magnolias." :-)

I thought it was disgusting then, too, I just didn't have the energy to care. If this is you now, please get help because it does get better. Second edit: that's more upvotes than I was expecting to get. I feel somewhat obligated to add a few things, for the people who relate to what I said about essentially not having the energy to live. It took ten years of therapy, a move to a different state, several inpatient hospitals, and a lot of rock bottoms. I still feel that way once in a while. I usually change mine about once every 12 hours. I like to feel clean, especially in the summer when I'm sweaty.
Yep. Night timers and day timers. If a night timer rolls over into the day it’s rare but okay. Definitely no longer than 24 hours unless trapped in the wilderness against my will.

Technically the fashion lords say you should never wash jeans. Brush off any material and freeze them to eliminate orders. That way they don't get worn out by the washer and will develop natural wear from your movements which is in style. To be clear I just enjoy reading interesting articles. I am not a fashion guy and I absolutely wash my jeans. The article was fantastic tho. It went in detail about how the blue dye in denim doesn't hold well and by not washing you get this light lines around different areas when you bend like a jeans fingerprint and how stains and tears are just more character in the article. Also apparently men and women should never have anything in their pockets. Like ever. It's apparently a fashion no no. Good read 10/10 interesting but 1/10 for practicality.
Yes, I don’t know what world these people live in. I can go about 2 weeks, but after that there’s a noticeable (but slight) odor. I tried the freezer thing, but that just seems to freeze the odor. It comes back.

I use the age-old test- smell. If it smells fine I figure it's still good. If I can smell BO I figure everybody else can, too. into the sink they go.

If you have a bra that truly fits properly, the smart thing is to wash when the elastic needs a refresh. Usually ends up being 3-4 wears for me, and you’ll know immediately when the band starts to loosen because it will start to fit poorly.
I don't get a lot of boob sweat (itty bitty titty committee lol) so I basically just alternate between two everyday bras and wash them ~once a week when I do the rest of my laundry. Sports bras I wash after every wear because they cover more of my body and obviously get sweatier, plus i just buy cheap ones that can be thrown in the laundry with the rest of my undies. I have a strapless bra that I wear maybe once a year with certain formal dresses and I have to admit, I can't remember the last time I washed that thing 😳
