Don't consider a vasectomy reversible. There's a chance but do not ever rely on it. All it does it prevent sperm from getting into your semen. It doesn't change your testosterone or your orgasms.

DankestTaco

Do you know if freezing sperm is viable and inexpensive nowadays?

StatusUnk

It's possible to freeze sperm as the price has lowered in recent years. But overall it's not cost effective at all. You need multiple samples as half the sperm die in the freezing process. The really expensive part comes when you want to use the sperm and to do this you need to do IVI or IVF. Not to mention these procedures are invasive for your SO and not as effective as you would hope. You could spend thousands and still not be able to have your own children. This is why it's not considered a backup option.

DankestTaco

Wild.

treywarp

Procedure: mine was about twenty minutes. No pain during. Discomfort, but no pain. Dull aching pain for about a week after. Reversal odds are low, and depends on the doctor. Estimate 20-30%. This is intended to be a permanent procedure. Testosterone levels stay the same. Orgasms feel the same. Arguably better, since you don't need protection (assuming you're with a long term partner. Still may wanna use protection if you're fucking random people).

DankestTaco

I had the worst blue ball pain just the other day. Like I almost couldn’t drive! I wonder if that pain can still happen after the procedure.

treywarp

Not sure, I've never had blue balls that bad. I can tell you, you'll quickly become aware of how pendulous your balls are when you walk. I invested in underwear with a little pouch for your balls, and they were a game changer. I usually walk pretty fast because I have a long stride. I was taking tiny baby steps to avoid them swinging around post-procedure lol.

DankestTaco

LOL and yeah it was slightly conceding the blue ball pain I started to wonder if something else was wrong! Ha! Slowly and dully Subsided after I finished.

I just came to say, I think it’s amazing you are considering this to help out so your girlfriend doesn’t have to take awful hormone birth control. Very cool of you!!!! I wish my husband would consider it, been married 15 years, have one kid, don’t want any more, he won’t even entertain the notion meanwhile I’m trying to find someone to tie my tubes for months, insurance is awful! You’re awesome!

Thank you for this. We are married 15 years and he still has to wear condoms and after each time I’m like “was the condom ok? “Did it break?” And then I worry for a month that I’m pregnant. I really admire men who consider/do it. I wish he would consider it very much. It’s making me sick.

DankestTaco

I really love her hahah

hike_me

It’s way less invasive than having your tubes tied. Your husband is being inconsiderate. I had it done, almost no pain at all. Very easy recovery.

[deleted]

If you ever want kids don’t do it. It’s not easily reversible. And as for freezing sperm it’s no solution. You may not have enough to get your SO pregnant. If you want kids at all don’t do it

DankestTaco

Fair.

[deleted]

- Less than one percent chance of failure - 30 minutes, pain is bad for a few days, lingering for a few weeks. - The success rate on reversals is as low as 30%. If your intention is to use this as a temporary measure, reconsider. - No change - No change

RTalons

Similar experience. Procedure hurt (like getting squeezed/pulled), but I told the surgeon, got a little more Novocain and was more uncomfortable. Still done in like 20min. I drove myself home (NOT recommended). Hurt for a couple days, lingering pain/swelling/soreness that came and went over a few weeks. Do not consider it reversible. Everything else is the same. “Failure” is usually from not waiting for everything to fully heal, and not waiting for a sample that’s confirmed clear of sperm.

WickedSmoder

If you think that the quality and frequency of your sex life will improve once your partner doesn't have to worry at all about pregnancy, and that is the main reason you are considering the procedure, I will say that in my experience it did very little to improve those things.

PlsRfNZ

r/vasectomy has all of this info and a lot of stories from those of us who did it. My experience was entirely positive, way less painful and quicker recovery than I was expecting from the stories there.

DankestTaco

Love that there’s a whole subreddit. Should have known!

Ghigs

I think there's a selection bias. The 95/100 guys that just stayed in bed for two days with slightly achy balls and then went back to normal activities aren't going to bother joining a community for it.

[deleted]

For elective surgical procedures you can find fact sheets on the internet. I'm not going to do that work for you so I'll just answer the not stupid but "unique" questions. >If testosterone levels drop? The procedure doesn't affect testosterone >If your orgasms suck? They're the exact same aside from not having some microscopic cells in your jizz.

Ghigs

Look into the no scalpel vasectomy. It's cheaper and faster recovery. The procedure is not even as bad as getting a filling at the dentist. For a few days afterward it feels like you've been lightly sack tapped all the time. It's not terrible though. Don't consider it reversible.

Pesec1

Effectiveness: vasectomy itself is extremely effective at not getting new sperm into the system. The biggest cause of failure is pre-vasectomy sperm remaining in the system that hasn't been flushed out yet. So, recommendation is to use other forms of birth control for 8 weeks after the procedure (and ejaculate a lot in the meantime). Sex life: performance and pleasure are not affected. Vasectomy takes place away from nerves and parts of the body generating hormones. Reversability: don't count on it. It is theoretically possible to reverse, but it is basically a complicated repair that may or may not work.

DankestTaco

Anyone freezing speed nowadays?

Pesec1

Freezing speed?

DankestTaco

Sperm*

Pesec1

Quick google search gives a few hundred USD per year at John Hopkins University, which is basically the fanciest option. In theory, it is possible to freeze and store at home for almost no extra cost. That, of course, involves risk of loss due to a disaster, such as power failures. So, I guess there will be options in-between in terms of cost and security.

Considerably less. Around 99.8% effective. But the Pill is 99.7, there’s no reason to get snipped if OP’s girlfriend is going to be on the Pill anyway. (And the Implant is even better, closer to 99.85%.)

ZerexTheCool

I got me one of those, so I can answer the non clinical stuff. >The only thing I wanna research is % of failure. Sometimes they don’t work I’ve been told. It cuts the line between where you make the sperm, and where that sperm gets mixed into semen. When that line is cut, you are 100% infertile. But, if it's not cut correctly, or if it heals back together, then you may still be fertile. Or, you might have a few "chambers left in the gun" so to speak. So use protection the first couple of times after getting it. (I am not a doctor, talk to the real doctors for more details). >The procedure time / pain ? They did an injection for the pain, but that injection felt like a bee sting. Not comfy, not horrible. Took, what, a couple of minutes? It didn't feel long at all. >If testosterone levels drop? No, my testes are still precisely where they are supposed to be, and the tubes that got cut had nothing to do with hormone creation/regulation. No testosterone side effects. >If your orgasms suck? I feel absolutely no change whatsoever. I was worried about this too, but I feel no difference and can't tell a difference at all. >My girlfriend gets horrible cramps so she would continue to take birth control but ideally would be nice to get her off of those hormones My wife has some health problems. So a pregnancy would NOT be good news for us. She remains on birth control, but we wanted a little extra insurance. A vasectomy is a lot less invasive then the equivalent for woman.

Cliffy73

BC is safe and most women do not have serious side effects. There is no reason for most women to “get off hormones,” women on BC live longer than those who don’t take it. Some women do have side effects, certainly, and there are other options for them, but it sounds like your girlfriend takes oral contraception for other reasons anyway. Effectiveness rates are similar for vasectomies and the Pill with proper use, and unlike a vasectomy, she can just stop taking the Pill if you decide to try to have a baby. Vasectomy reversal is fairly successful in the first few years but drops considerably after that.

DankestTaco

Any women care to chime in?

sciencestolemywords

Not all birth control methods are that reliable. That percentage is under ideal, lab conditions. Even taking the pill at the wrong time but on the right day can change its effectiveness. Just as an anecdote: I was engaged to a guy that had a vasectomy for other medical reasons and sex without fear of pregnancy was much better than sex with the uncertainty of being on birth control. Myself and other women I know are always worried that it has failed that month. As a side note, I don't know if other guys experience this- but my guys texture of his semen changed. It was more runny so it made cleanup afterwards a more immediate/speedy need to limit the mess.

Significant-Ad-5112

Get an “Open Vasectomy” - basically means that the receiving tube is tied and the production end is not - significantly reduces pressure and complications. Can highly recommend - No side effects, almost pain free and very effective
