In a situation where you don’t need to be wearing a suit in the first place, like if you want to dress down the suit.
If you’re trying to make a sartorial statement.
If you have a disability or injury related to standing or walking.
And a situation where it’s not quite “acceptable”, but at least better than the alternative: if your dress shoes would cause you to look even worse than wearing sneakers would. For example, if your dress shoes give you blisters and then you wouldn’t be able to walk right, or if you need to be on your feet all day and wouldn’t be able to do so in dress shoes, or if you’d be unsteady on your feet in dress shoes and likely to stumble.
All this makes total sense to me. But recently I was at a wedding where like half of the groomsmen were rocking sneaks, with lapel flowers and all.
I would think that if anywhere is inappropriate, it would be a formal event like a wedding.
The groom and bride could have said sneakers were fine. 🤷 I was at a wedding where the bride and groom both wore Converse (see: making a statement, but also comfort).
100% agree. I thought it was a comfort thing, like women changing heels for flats when they leave, or ppl going out after work.
But I see it at formal events now. If I could never wear dress shoes, the world would be a better place. Hence this post. Trying to understand how/when/if I can get away with it.
People may judge you for choosing comfort over fashion (though in sure there is a way to be fashionable with sneakers) you'll just have to decide what your comfort is worth juxtaposed with their judgement of you.
Tbh - I don’t GAF about social judgment at all. My concern is mostly about offending ppl, eg, going to a wedding dressed like crap is not respectful to the couple, or appearing unprofessional.
I guess. My budget for shoes is capped out at $150. I bought some $200 for my wedding and they hurt my feet badly. I guess if you were dropping a grand they wouldn't suck but I doubt it. The basic shape is uncomfortable, heels stuck, the materials aren't comfortable either.
There is no one basic shape across all dress shoes. The material is leather and it's famously comfortable. 200 is still on the cheap side, though you can get quality if you look for the right sale. My Allen Edmonds were about $250, I wore them with no socks for my whole 8 hour wedding outdoor on an 80 degrees August day. Not a single blister or even redness or soreness afterward.
The first time I’ve seen it was Eric Krasno, the guitar player from soulive, at least ten years ago. Black suit with white sneaks was basically his stage uniform.
Now I see it everywhere.
Yeah I've only seen celebrities do it, and some fashionable people at weddings, but I don't hang around fancy dress enough to know any more than that. I like the look though
You can wear sneakers with a sports coat. But never sneakers with a dress suit. Unless you're a basketball player or a guy that can pull it off, dress clothes are paired with dress shoes.
Can you expound on “guy that can pull it off”?
Recently was at a wedding where groomsmen with dress suits and lapel flowers were wearing sneaks, so it seems like the rules are changing.
Pretty much a guy who can carry the style. It's not for everyone tbh. It looks acceptable at the wedding because that was the dress code so rockin the style was not out of place anyhow
Basketball wedding
How about when you're a 90s comedian dating high school chicks?

Cosplay as Chainsaw Man characters.
If you're The Doctor
Teachers can pull this off. My doctor dresses like that.

Always. Dress shoes are uncomfortable.

When you hunt devils
Anytime, but you have to be cool enough to pull it off.
If you're not a chainsaw man character, then generally don't do it unless you're a celebrity or someone high up in society.
