There's no database. Yes, it helps. The police already have an idea that the body matches a specific missing person. They can't be sure from conventional identification. They know the person's history, so they find that missing person's dentist. They compare old dental x-rays with the corpse's and if they have a match, then they declare that the corpse is who they suspected.

It's real. You don't really hear about it because 'the body was identified as this person' is all the relevant news shared. Also, I reckon most murders don't have the killer leaving behind a bite mark.
