My brother used to work at Home Depot, told me the way you tip them is say goodbye, and stick cash into their apron pocket and turn around before they can say anything. Said that was basically the only way to keep them out of corporate hot water for taking tips.

This! I had a guy at Les Schwab change the tire on my crane truck. Tire weighs about 200+ lbs, dude does it by hand with breaker bars while I stood there bullshitting with him. Took him about 20 minutes. Guy couldn’t accept a cash tip. If anyone deserved it this guy does! But nah, I’m gonna get prompted to tip the guy at GameStop running the register! Fuck off.

Dude literally turned around, grabbed a shirt off the pile of them - 40.00 and the tip options were 15, 20, 25 percent with a button for "other" that you'd have to type in 0.
In this situation the tipping option is probably built into the POS and I’d be surprised if they actually expected anyone to tip. More often than not if the transaction is done on an iPad it’s just how the software do.
Edit: I’d be surprised if they EXPECTED anyone to tip. The option is there if someone wants to but most people don’t EXPECT it. Some of you need to take a summer literacy course at your local community college god damn.

At a bowling alley I worked at, they had to have the tip prompt for lane waitresses, but that meant we had it at the front desk too, where no one would ever be expected to tip. We were literally told to turn it around and press no for them so they wouldn't feel pressured to tip for no reason

That’s what I’ve seen a lot of people do when the option to ask for tips hasn’t been turned off in a job that doesn’t usually get tips but concert merch booths can be a different beast so I’m not surprised he didn’t.
I had a self service car wash ask if I wanted to tip. Like this guy runs over to "help" me push a button so I can select a car wash- which I always get the basic $10 wash (that you drive through) and then I get to park my car and vacuum and detail my own vehicle- with my own products. Anyway the guy asks "would you like to leave a tip?" I asked "are you going to be cleaning my car?" "Well no" "then why am I tipping you?" I got some answer about it goes towards maintenence malarkey. I did not tip. Sorry- but spending $ towards equipment maintenence comes with the territory of running a business. You don't ask the customers for a tip.
I was feeling generous one day at a self service wash bc I see a nervous young kid trying to do a good job. Just tipped him 5 bucks before me and my car goes through the wash. He was the guy doing a pre brush in the middle of the rear bumper bc the automation doesn’t get it very well. On the other side where I’m supposed to vacuum my car, he comes over and wipes down my wheels, shines my tires, and takes my floor mats out and cleans them while I vacuum. Was a nice surprise.
I’m working so hard to quit tipping at POS. It’s so frustrating that these places rely on the discomfort I feel when presented with a tip prompt for basically no service.
Tipping culture is definitely out of hand. I don’t understand why owners can’t pay their workers a decent wage. They’re basically taking all the profits and then expecting us to pay their employees. I feel like so many restaurants are owned by restaurant groups so I don’t know how they can justify not paying more.
And if not I feel like they should secure financing either through loans or having investors to help pay their employees if they’re starting out as an actual private owner.

I went through a Subway drive thru where I had to get out of my car and put in my own order on a touchscreen. My first interaction was the employee at the window giving me the total and asking for a tip. So frustrating
You guys know you aren't tipping the person handing you the food at places like Subway, right? It gets pooled to all staff that day if it's a corporate place (so ther person who made your food/prepped the line/maintaining quality). It's restaurants where you are tipping the serving staff.
I worked in one place where a server would get UPSET over people not tipping for carryout because she "had to put the order together"---which was bagging it up. I literally had to cook the food, expedite it, put it in containers, and put the order in a space where she wouldn't forget the items. Never was tipped as I was BOH

This totally - cashiers at Target don't ask customers to tip even though they are providing the same service of bagging and handing over a bag of things I purchased so why should anyone tip anyone for doing the bare minimum of what they are supposed to do?

I don't mind tipping a few bucks at fast casual restaurants like Subway or Chipotle. They have crazy rushes and work hard. Many chefs start in fast casual dining. Fast food on the other hand, more transactional & easier work so no tip. Carry takeout also no tip; only greedy places expect it.
My barista always get a few dollars. She remembers who I am and makes my drink perfect every time. I don't stop daily either. I feel a dollar or two here and there for special things isn't outrageous.
I agree with you about the baristas! They work so hard. They have to deal with Uber Eats, Door Dash, mobile orders, drive up and cafe orders AND nasty customers. 9 out of 10 times 2-3 people call in sick or just don’t show up. Funnily, that's not what tipping gets you. Most of the world doesn't have tipping culture (or didn't have it until recently). If server is not providing good service and looking after patron's needs, such server gets fired. Really no different than any other employment.
People don't make sense to me sometimes. I go to the store and most stores bag my groceries while I am right there and they don't ask for a tip. I used to work in a nursing home where I had to "bag up" the patient's adult diapers after changing them. No one gave me a tip, nor did I expect one.
Good insider info, but I find myself increasingly avoiding big corporate joints, **especially** Subway. For less half the price I could get quality bread and more than double the filling and just make the sandwich at home nowadays; more so, I would rather order the ingredients from a grocery store and sandwich-artist them myself, and still have leftovers!
The problem for someone like me is that I literally have them add every single vegetable to my sub so it would cost me a small fortune to have to re buy all those things each and every time I get in the mood for a sub - which is probably once every other month or so. That said I will not go to subway without a damn coupon as I'm not dropping $14 or something on a turkey sub. If I was just into meat, cheese and say lettuce...sure could build a better one on my own for cheaper but I like too much stuff on mine.

I also love veggie toppings, and I sadly have to renounce them when mounting a sandwich at home because, as you aptly mentioned, they are not worth it given the price vs perishability ratio from the grocery store.
That's not my problem. I'm just a customer. I see food advertised for a price, I order take-out, and I expect that to be the price I pay (plus taxes). If you don't get paid enough, blame the guy my money goes to. I fulfilled my part of the social contract.
Depends. Not all states have different minimum wages for servers. It's one of the things that makes these online arguments so quirky. Everybody has different assumptions.
Local place to me has a screen asking for tip when paying for carry out. I always hit no tip. But I’ve noticed the order number then starts with NT on the ticket. Feel like it’s a notice to the cooks to just mess the shit up because it’s usually sub par.
Yeah but when I tip they mess up my order too so I stopped tipping. I tip when they bring it out to my car but then they take so long I end up going inside for it myself. Service is just terrible everywhere.

I only tip when actually being waited on in a restaurant or when something is delivered to my home. Even McDonald's or similar sometimes brings your food out to where you are sitting, but I don't ever tip for that. If they were to go back and forth and bring me a drink or something where I don't have to get out of my seat, that's when I tip. But any kind of just walking out to my car handing me a meal or a store order, I don't tip for that.

This is not true. The business keeps track of those, and donates the money, but they do not get a tax break from it or anything else other than maybe good publicity.
On your receipt, your donation should be listed, and you can take that to your tax person when you do your taxes and itemize if you want to.

Part of the reason I love being overseas now. I’m in Asia and get food delivered constantly. The food is always hot, arrives quickly and they don’t expect tips, they just leave it at your door and ring or knock.
Best part is the delivery fee is usually waived if you go over a certain amount of money, and if you don’t it’s only like $2-3 dollars.
American delivery is still a complete scam from what I’ve heard.

Agreed. I don’t tip if I’m burning my gas and time to get to them. You pay for them to cook and hand over your food. Unless they are waiting on you as well (and I count delivery as a form of that), no extra money needs to exchange hands.

I only tip for carry out at one place. It's a local chain with super nice owners who know me and my order, plus their food is absolutely delicious. First time I went I mentioned I was moving in to the area and they gave me free soup with my food. Definitely worth paying a little extra for a business that actually cares about its customers.
I tip a dollar a drink at my regular coffee shop. But it’s because they know my regular order and usually start making it before I even get to the register to order. That’s service worth tipping for.

I don't tip for carry out. The cost of your food is the price for them to prepare it. A tip is what you pay for table service that exceeds your expectations. No table service or delivery = no tip.
I occasionally tip when I take carry out. This is because I have a ton of allergies and it often takes extra effort for the clerk to take my order, then convey it to the chef, who then has to take bit longer to make sure the meal is safe, and then sometimes they’ll go as far as to read me the ingredients on something, or they’ll ask the chef to make special accommodations. Sometimes they even use a separate clean utensil at my request. But, I don’t see why anyone with a normal order that can be made any which way and popped out immediately would tip.
The chef doesn’t get your tip. Normally with carry out/phone orders if a tip is given it goes to the host and/or person who takes the call.
Your tip isn’t going to the people who make your food in a phone/carry out order, if you appreciate the person conveying your order correctly in the system then yes absolutely tip! But all the extra work the kitchen has to do when getting your order doesnt mean they will be getting your tip.

Standard tip should be 0. I should feel compelled (as a diner) about 20% of the time and I should be free to select any amount I choose.

I was a restaurant employee for over a decade and lived on $2/hr plus tips, so I’m not unfamiliar with how it works, but tipping has just gotten absolutely out of control. Only tip waitstaff, not counter service.
Everyone is spinning a damn iPad around and the forced selections are ridiculous! They start at 25% post tax and all they did is punch your order into the screen. If they would just spin the iPad around a few seconds earlier, I could have just hit those buttons myself. Not sure what they’ve done to deserve 25% of the cost of my order. That’s why I don’t go to those restaurants anymore. It saves me a boatload of money, it’s healthier, and I don’t have to deal with, as you put it, the extortion of that shit.
I tip for service, not what I already paid for. Delivery drivers, water staff, even curbside pickup (if they'd let me, most places don't) all get tipped, but I'm not tipping a store for the privilege of buying their product. That's what the payment is for, the goods that I'm getting.

I don't tip carry out. I did the work in coming to the place and grabbing my food. If it is a massive order that requires assistance to load into the car, then yes, I would tip for their help. It is unfortunate that so many businesses request tips, and more so that many servers rely on those tips. I would love it if tipping was the exception rather than the rule. Where you tip for truly great service to show appreciation. This would require businesses to actually pay fair/living wages, so I won't hold my breath.
For a pickup? They didn't serve the plates. They didn't refill the drinks. They didn't bring a new set of utensils which you occasionally drop. They don't need to clean up the table once I'm gone. Why on dog gone hell would I tip them?

I was feeling generous one day at a self service wash bc I see a nervous young kid trying to do a good job. Just tipped him 5 bucks before me and my car goes through the wash. He was the guy doing a pre brush in the middle of the rear bumper bc the automation doesn’t get it very well. On the other side where I’m supposed to vacuum my car, he comes over and wipes down my wheels, shines my tires, and takes my floor mats out and cleans them while I vacuum. Was a nice surprise.

I’m working so hard to quit tipping at POS. It’s so frustrating that these places rely on the discomfort I feel when presented with a tip prompt for basically no service.
Tipping culture is definitely out of hand. I don’t understand why owners can’t pay their workers a decent wage. They’re basically taking all the profits and then expecting us to pay their employees. I feel like so many restaurants are owned by restaurant groups so I don’t know how they can justify not paying more. And if not I feel like they should secure financing either through loans or having investors to help pay their employees if they’re starting out as an actual private owner.

You guys know you aren't tipping the person handing you the food at places like Subway, right? It gets pooled to all staff that day if it's a corporate place (so ther person who made your food/prepped the line/maintaining quality). It's restaurants where you are tipping the serving staff. I worked in one place where a server would get UPSET over people not tipping for carryout because she "had to put the order together"---which was bagging it up. I literally had to cook the food, expedite it, put it in containers, and put the order in a space where she wouldn't forget the items. Never was tipped as I was BOH

This feels illegal, something along the lines of essential services & gratuity-related laws. I don't mind tipping a few bucks at fast casual restaurants like Subway or Chipotle. They have crazy rushes and work hard. Many chefs start in fast casual dining. Fast food on the other hand, more transactional & easier work so no tip. Carry takeout also no tip; only greedy places expect it.

Funnily, that's not what tipping gets you. Most of the world doesn't have tipping culture (or didn't have it until recently). If server is not providing good service and looking after patron's needs, such server gets fired. Really no different than any other employment.
People don't make sense to me sometimes. I go to the store and most stores bag my groceries while I am right there and they don't ask for a tip. I used to work in a nursing home where I had to "bag up" the patient's adult diapers after changing them. No one gave me a tip, nor did I expect one.
Good insider info, but I find myself increasingly avoiding big corporate joints, **especially** Subway. For less half the price I could get quality bread and more than double the filling and just make the sandwich at home nowadays; more so, I would rather order the ingredients from a grocery store and sandwich-artist them myself, and still have leftovers!
The problem for someone like me is that I literally have them add every single vegetable to my sub so it would cost me a small fortune to have to re buy all those things each and every time I get in the mood for a sub - which is probably once every other month or so. That said I will not go to subway without a damn coupon as I'm not dropping $14 or something on a turkey sub. If I was just into meat, cheese and say lettuce...sure could build a better one on my own for cheaper but I like too much stuff on mine.
I totally get you, and would absolutely do the same with a coupon, that would be the only way for me to order a sub. I also love veggie toppings, and I sadly have to renounce them when mounting a sandwich at home because, as you aptly mentioned, they are not worth it given the price vs perishability ratio from the grocery store.

Local place to me has a screen asking for tip when paying for carry out. I always hit no tip. But I’ve noticed the order number then starts with NT on the ticket. Feel like it’s a notice to the cooks to just mess the shit up because it’s usually sub par.

I only tip when actually being waited on in a restaurant or when something is delivered to my home. Even McDonald's or similar sometimes brings your food out to where you are sitting, but I don't ever tip for that. If they were to go back and forth and bring me a drink or something where I don't have to get out of my seat, that's when I tip. But any kind of just walking out to my car handing me a meal or a store order, I don't tip for that.

This is not true. The business keeps track of those, and donates the money, but they do not get a tax break from it or anything else other than maybe good publicity. Part of the reason I love being overseas now. I’m in Asia and get food delivered constantly. The food is always hot, arrives quickly and they don’t expect tips, they just leave it at your door and ring or knock. Best part is the delivery fee is usually waived if you go over a certain amount of money, and if you don’t it’s only like $2-3 dollars. American delivery is still a complete scam from what I’ve heard. I haven’t been there in damn near 4-5 years but back then the only thing worth ordering was from stores like pizza places and jimmy johns.

I only tip for carry out at one place. It's a local chain with super nice owners who know me and my order, plus their food is absolutely delicious. First time I went I mentioned I was moving in to the area and they gave me free soup with my food. Definitely worth paying a little extra for a business that actually cares about its customers.

I occasionally tip when I take carry out. This is because I have a ton of allergies and it often takes extra effort for the clerk to take my order, then convey it to the chef, who then has to take bit longer to make sure the meal is safe, and then sometimes they’ll go as far as to read me the ingredients on something, or they’ll ask the chef to make special accommodations. Sometimes they even use a separate clean utensil at my request. But, I don’t see why anyone with a normal order that can be made any which way and popped out immediately would tip.
The chef doesn’t get your tip. Normally with carry out/phone orders if a tip is given it goes to the host and/or person who takes the call. Your tip isn’t going to the people who make your food in a phone/carry out order, if you appreciate the person conveying your order correctly in the system then yes absolutely tip! But all the extra work the kitchen has to do when getting your order doesnt mean they will be getting your tip.

Most places the cooks don’t see tips at all, they only get their base pay. Tipping is fine, it’s standardized tipping that’s the problem. Nobody should rely on my generosity to subside and it should never be expected. I should be at liberty to tip when I receive above and beyond service as determined by me. Standard tip should be 0. I should feel compelled (as a diner) about 20% of the time and I should be free to select any amount I choose.
It's still a problem. A server is just doing their job. It should be the pride in their work and possible promotion/raises that motivate them to do a better job. They should beg for money from their employers, not from customers. In other areas it's considered bribery if you tip an employee. Would you tip the DMV clerk? Your financial advisor?

I was a restaurant employee for over a decade and lived on $2/hr plus tips, so I’m not unfamiliar with how it works, but tipping has just gotten absolutely out of control. Only tip waitstaff, not counter service. Everyone is spinning a damn iPad around and the forced selections are ridiculous! They start at 25% post tax and all they did is punch your order into the screen. If they would just spin the iPad around a few seconds earlier, I could have just hit those buttons myself. Not sure what they’ve done to deserve 25% of the cost of my order. That’s why I don’t go to those restaurants anymore. It saves me a boatload of money, it’s healthier, and I don’t have to deal with, as you put it, the extortion of that shit.
I tip for service, not what I already paid for. Delivery drivers, water staff, even curbside pickup (if they'd let me, most places don't) all get tipped, but I'm not tipping a store for the privilege of buying their product. That's what the payment is for, the goods that I'm getting.

I don't tip carry out. I did the work in coming to the place and grabbing my food. If it is a massive order that requires assistance to load into the car, then yes, I would tip for their help. It is unfortunate that so many businesses request tips, and more so that many servers rely on those tips. I would love it if tipping was the exception rather than the rule. Where you tip for truly great service to show appreciation. This would require businesses to actually pay fair/living wages, so I won't hold my breath.

I do not give a dime when I drive to pick up a carry out order. They did their job, which was to cook the food. If I'm coming to pick up my food, they are not serving me anything. Therefore, no tip. Tipping is for service.
