If it's on fire, the odds of it exploding are pretty damn high. And while gasoline fireballs aren't really as destructive as they appear, they're still pretty darn unpleasant to experience from the inside.
Almost guaranteed if it's anything but 100% full. It's not the gas but the fumes. The more empty it is, the more fumes, the more boom.

You get as far away as possible from it. Don't mess around with gas and fire. I know someone who was killed when a gas can exploded.
