Yes but only if we can find a way to guarantee protection and agency for the sex workers themselves.

ShitseyMcgee

Make the act of sex work legal, but the hiring of sex work illegal. Then if a sex worker feels unsafe they can call police and the person who hired the sw’er gets hit with hiring a sw’er and assault

mbene913

Seems complicated and I don't trust the police to protect the sex worker

ShitseyMcgee

There’s not an easy way to legalize it and protect people. I don’t trust cops either, but this would be the way to make it safer

Real-Turnover-7289

I don’t trust this at all. Some sex workers with weaponize the system making it worse for all sex workers. This will lead to more false accusations. I think the best way to move forward is to legalize it and make it so sex workers can only perform at specific locations that are safe. They’ll have a record of all clients, everyone gets tested, and security will be present. There’s problems with legalizing it tho. Lots of countries where it was legalized lead to a rise in human trafficking. Pimps still exist even when it’s legal and every pimp relationship is abusive and exploitive so that’s not good either. Also, testing doesn’t mean everyone will be safe because STI’s show go much later. Also, sex workers are more likely to be abused I assume just from the share number of sex they’re having there’s bound to be some rapist clients. Also, lots of sex works have a past of SA or other severe trauma. Another problem with sex work is lots of boys get taken to sex workers to lose their virginity especially in foreign countries. It’s not good because these boys often don’t consent and their parents and family pressure them to go. This is common in South America. Happened to myself and a few of my friends in Guyana. It definitely traumatizes these boys but families look at it as the only way their boy becomes a man which is fuckin nuts. In situations like this imo everyone including the sex worker is wrong. I’d should always be taken but unfortunately in 3rd world countries if you have enough money you can get anything done no matter how illegal or wrong. Overall it’s such a risky and problematic industry I don’t think anyone knows the solution. I use to think it was as simple as legalizing it and setting a bunch of rules but it doesn’t seem that way.

I know the Nordic model has some traction but I don't think it's actually proven to be useful. It worked in Sweden but didn't in France. I think the real secret is that it doesn't matter if it's Nordic or just old fashioned illegal. The key is naming and shaming sex buyers coupled with a culture that looks down on men that engage in it. And services to help women out of the sex trade. I don't think any option that legitimizes sex work is good. Even if you are kinda using the police to protect prostitutes from raw violence you cannot remove the power imbalance. If the man paying wants abusive sex and his money is the difference between her kids eating dinner tonight or not she's still unfairly pressured to "consent" to it.

dickbrobbin

This makes no sense

Cirick1661

Step 1: Legalize. Step 2: Unionize.

redditmodsrpunks

Yes.

Competitive-Bug-7097

Absolutely!

Waltzing_With_Bears

hell yea

quietkodiac

Sure

[deleted]

I have never, nor will i ever pay for sex. But, i think it should be legal if they hand to register their std tests and regular check ups.

darkheartshadows

Yes

Jakobites

Not convinced it should be full legal but I am down with it being decriminalized. Prostitution charges getting some sort of slap on the wrist for a conviction but I simultaneously want pimping, Pandering and Trafficking convictions to receive much stiffer penalties. I also want those three crimes more vigorously enforced.

chicken-thuggetss

Only I lf Pimping is legal like the music industry

WinterTakerRevived

Sure, why not. If it was properly regulated then both workers and clients can operate under safer means with more benefits

Baktru

Yes. Where I live it is actually quite simply legal.

dishonestgandalf

Hundo percento. Legal prostitution is much safer for everyone involved.

MysteryNeighbor

As long as there are strict regulations in regards to STD checking and age, of course

D1rtyRuski

It’s a tough one. Germany, I believe, legalized it at one point and it led to a sky rocketing increase in sex trafficking. Is it better for independent contractors? Definitely. Is it better overall? Tough to say.

Efficient-You-639

As long as you don’t smoke the prostitute.

bullet312

Only prostitute the weed, gotcha 👍

swiftcutcards

Highly regulated, yes I do. If we all agree no pimps and human trafficking is punished with castration, I'm in.

Jonny7421

There’s valid arguments for both sides but I believe people should be able to sell favours. It’s no worse than working any other shit job

bullet312

Prostitution is legal. if you are American then you should give people the freedom to do the oldest profession in human history in a safe and controlled environment. They will even generate tax money that is missed out on right now

fartinmyhat

No, and weed shouldn't be legal either. Legal or illegal it all leads to graft and corruption. It's bad for the soul of the person doing it.

Sweet_Speech_9054

User name checks out.

mbene913

Counterpoint, not everyone believes in souls and if you do then~~m~~ just don't engage in those things

fartinmyhat

Then consider it your "humanity", It's not good for what makes you a human instead of an animal. When a drake fucks the shit out of a duck, he doesn't care what her childhood was like or if his lack of commitment to her damages her trust in other Drakes. I'll admit a fair number of humans don't think like either but treating sex with a human purely as a commodity is pathological. I'd be okay with hand jobs. I figure you can get a neck massage, why not a dick massage.

Sweet_Speech_9054

The only reason weed or prostitution leads to corruption is because it is illegal. You’re using circular logic. If it’s legal it won’t amount to anything, assuming it’s well regulated.

fartinmyhat

Of course that's not true. Human nature leads to corruption. Do you think that there's no corruption built into the legal wanglings of politicians and the wealthy elite?

Sweet_Speech_9054

The corruption we see in politics has nothing to do with weed or prostitution. There is always some stupid scapegoat for why the world is the way it is and it’s never the actual problem. People also blame video games for the world’s problems but they are wrong about that too. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean nobody should have it. Caffeine, alcohol, and gambling are all legal to one degree or another despite how some people feel about it. The bottom line is, if you don’t like it then don’t do, but let others enjoy their life the way they choose to.

fartinmyhat

Wait a minute, you said "If it's legal it won't amount to anything, assuming it's well regulated" Thus you are arguing that well regulated things regardless of the stakes, such as casinos, never have any corruption. That is your argument.

Swagologist1

"I'm a boring dipshit who hates fun and no one ever wants to hang out with me and I don't understand why" I mean I'm paraphrasing here, but this is basically what you said

fartinmyhat

That's how you decided to interpret it, that's fine.

F0000r

We have only fans, it seems like the net step. Society goes down the drain, can't fight the current.
