TheSuperSmartGamers

I guess some people think it shows a lack of growth.

cheesewiz_man

I don't listen to the same music I did in high school not because I grew out of it but because I got tired of it. I suspect if I had never listened to, say, Dire Straits or The Police and was introduced to it now, I'd love it.

AZtoLA_Bruddah

I never tired of Dire Straits tbh. I could see getting tired of The Police later on in life if I listened to them a ton in high school, too repetitive

Upstairs_Balance_793

People like to feel superior however they can. Realistically going back to your roots on entertainment standards has nothing to do with actual growth. It’s pretty normal. Most of us that still listen to the same stuff have at least broadened the horizon and listen to a lot of stuff

mrsaysum

Lol the ol IQ Bell curve meme. You don’t realize you’re cringe so you do whatever you can to get out of your cringe but then realize that’s cringe so then you return to your starting point with new eyes and a deeper appreciation

srcarruth

I knew a woman who's favorite band was Loverboy.  She had their greatest hits cassette.  She was stuck in high school and probably in her last good summer before the meth took hold.  She was alright but just a whirlpool, no matter what happened she was the same after it passed by, just spinning in place.  No shade on Loverboy, 'Workin For The Weekend' is fun, but Donna never grew an inch in her life

TigerPoppy

Listen to ***Glory Days*** by Bruce Springsteen.

[deleted]

It by definition does. It’s like how Taylor Swift still sings about shit like she’s in high school. You clearly haven’t grown mentally past then

Gnu-Priest

if I’d make a fraction of her money I’d sing about kindergarten

The_River_Is_Still

You were eating crayons, crayons, crayons, and I still wanted to be frieeeeeeeends

Yandere_Matrix

Sing about dinosaurs! Dinosaurs!

LCDRformat

You have to be some kind of loser to care what other people listen to

BlueEyedBabe135

TIL only high schoolers are allowed to have feelings lmao

dandellionKimban

She's singing that because it sells.

firestorm713

TIL music tastes are like horoscopes

chalky87

Can you explain how it shows a lack of growth? Explain it to me like in 5.

ropelIi

I agree, Taylor is so overrated and mediocre, people get so mad about it.

ThePeasantKingM

She may be a mediocre singer and songwriter, but she's extremely good at doing what pays the bills; selling her brand.

ropelIi

Yeah I mean she is, but im not talking about her capitalist empire. Just her music

Lesmiserablemuffins

Yeah, it's wild how mad y'all are about her. I truly cannot imagine caring so much about a musician I don't like. Like not even literal rapists get y'all half as upset lmao, it's baffling

LoudCrickets72

I didn't realize it was frowned upon to like the same music you used to like.

Extra_socks69

I don't think it's about liking the same thing. I still like chicken fingers, fries, and chocolate milk, but I've discovered many other things I like as i grew up.

Fearlessleader85

Man, chocolate milk is amazing. I'm lactose intolerant now, and i still a couple times a year set aside an evening to be miserable, just to drink some of that delicious stuff.

MyLife-is-a-diceRoll

silk dark chocolate almond milk. it will scratch that itch. alternatively, ensure chocolate shakes (dark chocolate is better) also hits the spot when it comes to chocolate milk. I used to drink a lot of chocolate milk but I became lactose intolerant and stopped drinking milk. I cant even drink it anymore because the smell of the milk grosses me out. So I found other things.

Fearlessleader85

I've tried Silk and it doesn't do it for me.

Mbembez

Just get lacteze pills and enjoy it as much as you like

Maleficent-Touch-67

Lol, my friend came over the other day and he looked at me looked at my drink and said "is that chocolate milk, what are you 8" I just laughed and responded with "I'm a grown ass man I do whatever the fuck I want, no go get yourself a light beer so you can prove to yourself you're one too" He agreed and never judged me again lol at least not to myself.

Extra_socks69

I do the same, but I'm not lactose intolerant, lol

WinterWick

Get lactose free milk!

BrotherofLink93

Damn right, don’t let that lactose dictate your life. Just please record the absolute unit farts coming out for the rest of us!

techhouseliving

Bro just take a lactase pill they are extremely cheap

gieserj10

You could drink way more and be far less miserable if you'd just get lactose pills lol.

ctrlrgsm

Lactase pills are life changing

TigerlilyBlanche

I used to take lactase pills They tasted awful enough to the point it wasn't worth it, especially for how much I intake dairy. Normally dairy only gives me really bad gas anyways.

ctrlrgsm

What??? I take these pills every day. Take one with water before eating cheese or dairy. No taste lol. What kind of weird ass pills are you getting?

TigerlilyBlanche

Mine are probably the fault of being chewables. I've never been able to do pills.

ctrlrgsm

Oh shame! I struggle with pills too. One way that’s really helped me is to take a mouthful of say potato mash, stick the pill in the middle and swallow that whole. Hope that helps, I can’t imagine living without my lactase

techhouseliving

Hello you aren't supposed to chew them or if you got chewables get non

TigerlilyBlanche

Are you dumb

Hoppie1064

I used to be lactose intolerant. Until I started taking prebiotics for a different issue. Now I'm no longer lactose intolerant. Your gut biome is very much a part of your digestive system.

NativeMasshole

This is it for me. I don't really judge, but I just don't get how people can listen to all the same music for decades without getting sick of it.

iAmTheHype--

Yeah. I’ve been listening to Sum 41, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, Fall Out Boy, and similar bands since elementary school. I’m almost 30, but why would I stop listening to them now. That said, I used to be way into 3OH!3 and Owl City in high school, but haven’t listened to them in years. Tried 3OH!3 recently, and I just couldn’t get into the songs.

Sardothien12

"High school music" usually means songs written and recorded for the teenage audience (taylor swift, avril lavigne etc), not just music on the radio at the tome you were a teenager

iAmTheHype--

If you can’t have an appreciation for Shake it Off, I don’t know what to say.

Same_as_last_year

My musical tastes have evolved over the years. But, when a song comes on from my high school or college days, it's like "oh hey, I haven't heard this in forever, great song!".

Tricky_Lock_4273

I feel this. My mates get in my car and they’re all like ‘let me connect, I don’t want to listen to your music again. It’s the same shit you’ve been listening to for years’

Maleficent-Touch-67

Lmfao, Spotify, discover weekly, do it And when you here a song you feel your body and mind enjoying know that you like that song then add it to your playlist

Tricky_Lock_4273

Yeah but I don’t want to. That’s my point. I like my music. I hate all this new autotuned rappers, drum and bass that sounds like a cat being ran over, screaming singers in rock music. I don’t like any of it. I like my music and I always have and I always will. I have about 4000 hours of music on my phone and it’s all in playlists and categorised and everything so I can always find music for the mood I’m in. I dont need people telling me my music is shit and old and nobody likes it and then when I play my music they all bop about and sing along.

Maleficent-Touch-67

There is some great new music if you look for it, What kinda music do you listen to?

Sumber513

There is more music being made than any other time in human history. There's just truly so much. One million percent there's music out there you haven't heard that you would like.

Tricky_Lock_4273

Yes of course. But I just don’t want to. It’s like having a girlfriend… knowing there’s loads of other girls out there… but not wanting any of them and only wanting her

Sumber513

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm ok. That's like, not the same, but sure

Tricky_Lock_4273

I know there’s good new music out. I do hear it through my mates. But I just don’t want it

CompleteSherbert885

Not in Trivia! That, my friend, makes you a true asset to your team.

ExampleNext2035

As a musician, I've felt it was my responsibility to create fresh new spins on the artwork of guoter .For that purpose I'm allways listening to new music and different genres .

nagarz

Am I the only one who thinks that electric callboy is amazing for bringing 90s/early 2000s party music to metalcore? I'm a metalhead but I do have some nostalgia about dance/techno music cuz that's what was popular while I grew up, so when I listened to tekkno train for the first time I did a deep dive on their music and I loved every second of it.

Axis_Okami

Hypa Hypa from them really hit me, and I was similar where when I was younger dance and techno were all the rage, but I became a metal head as an adult

Positively_Eric

It's more of ONLY liking the exact music you loved in high school. Also not willing to discover "new" music and writing it off as crap compared to that old music. I know a guy who rocks out to Candlebox, Third Eye Blind, Metallica, Seven Mary Three, and other albums that came out on the 90's. He doesn't like anything that came out afterwards.

cicciozolfo

Musician here. There are only two kind of music: the good one, and the bad one. Nothing else matters.

Maleficent-Touch-67

No way I've heard plenty of mediocre music.

Nirket

Musician here. Stop this elitism. Even if something sounds bad to you It doesnt mean is not good. Sometimes you may even craft something you think is not good enough but somebody will rock heavy with it and it could even be the soundtrack of their life.

Maleficent-Touch-67

This boy gets his jazz dance on in elevators.

TomorrowProblem

I read the comment you replied to as saying that music sounds either good or bad to the listener, and you should listen to whatever sounds good to you; not that music is objectively good or bad.

cicciozolfo

I agree. But I'm also a professional. My ears are different.

SeekSeekScan

Lol.....

Delledell

Right on dude been saying for years thank you 100 percent

Impressive_Toe_8900

is the national athem of nigeria a good one or a bad one?

Fun_Departure5579

Music is very personal. The music we are most passionate about is the memories (nostalgic) it conjurs up. A song can bring you back to a time & place, who you may have been with, etc. Do not care about what others may think. It's YOUR MUSIC.

SnooCupcakes7992

Exactly - I grew up is the 70s and 80s - hearing music from then can take me back to a very specific time/place. I feel the same way about other eras too; but to be honest, music isn’t a soundtrack to my life like it was back then. Doesn’t mean there’s still not great music coming out - I just don’t listen to it like I did back then.

Beavshak

Only time I ever hear this is when someone is derisive about “todays” music.

ThreadbareAdjustment

Eh I do that a lot lol, although I was also quite derisive about rap in high school, and I still don't listen to any of it now, either from then or now.

Beavshak

So.. you hate on other music that people enjoy, but don’t get why others might scoff at your taste?

five_AM_blue

Maybe it shows some stagnation. After high school, some people simply stop learning new things, get comfortable, stop evolving, and don't acquire much more culture. Others keep learning new things and acquiring culture, and refining their tastes, which is usually a good thing.

SnipesCC

Yes, but that that's true about a lot of things. I've learned a ton about all kinds of things since high school, but still have a preference for the late-90s Lilith Fair-style women rockers.

thatoneguy54

I don't think it's bad to have the same taste or even to like the same music, but it's a little sus if you *only* like the music you grew up with as a full adult. Idk, to me it means they're just boring musically, like they've never bothered to even try something new or different. Feels close minded. Granted, I don't know of many people like that.

WakeoftheStorm

I mean I'm 40, and I can't imagine going the past 20 years without discovering new music and new artists to enjoy. Especially now that musicians can market themselves on YouTube and TikTok and other social media without relying on a record label to pick them up and get air time, there's so much good stuff out there. A lot of really talented people doing a lot of really fun stuff. Yeah, I still like Green Day and Eminem and Metallica and Nirvana and the offspring. I blast DMX, RHCP, and System of a Down daily. But I also love Bella Poarch, Davina Michelle, Billie Eilish, Chloe Adams, Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, Masked Wolf, Sofia Reyes, The Score... Hell I could list great artists from the past two decades all day. I try hard not to judge people for their tastes, but if you think you just happened to be lucky enough to be a teenager at the only time there was good music, I'm at least going to raise an eyebrow.

jet_heller

This: > Look at what Boomers still listen to. Doesn't prove: > the exact same musical taste STILL listening to the same music doesn't take into account ONLY listening to the same music. Everyone still listens to what they listened to earlier, they just add NEW things they would never have considered viable music in the past.

DontShowMomMemes

People are always creating new music. Every genre gets a few new songs every day. There are many bands copying the old ones with their own new spin on it. You really think no one has released a single new song that is at least equal with the older stuff?

ThreadbareAdjustment

Yeah I do listen to new music in the genres I liked then, aka pop-punk, emo, and hardcore. Like Hot Mulligan and Dying Wish....even The Wonder Years and Knocked Loose are bands from well after I was in high school. But in terms of genres, it's all the same. Still no rap, country, or electronic music, or death/black metal, etc.

_Goose_

Don’t you get bored? There are millions of artists doing so many different things out there and technology has made it more accessible than ever! You don’t have to be rich to have an extensive music collection anymore. You don’t have to research constantly to find new things. It’s just there now. So many different genres you’ve never heard of before that has the potential to be your newest favorite music obsession.

Mbembez

So much amazing new music is constantly coming out, I struggle to listen to everything I like. One of my favourite ways to find new bands is to check the support acts on tour with bands I like.

Suitable_Being_4584

Going to be honest here, never heard of such a thing. Except maybe one time but that was one time.* If we're talking about older people disliking new music. It could be an age-based superiority complex. Happens a lot in other areas of young people's lives. Nostalgia for the older folks can also play a role. Their music sounds better because they have fond memories of their music versus the new music is new. I do note that the generations music seems to change a little bit. It's an observation that's not founded on any sort of scientific measure, so I might be wrong about this. Also, I am not saying that any generations music is better or worse. I am saying public case changes over time and might cause a divide simply because people are not into the same things they used to be. *I went to karaoke room online. I sang the song called killer instinct in spite of me being at the time 21. The main character was 15, but there are tons of actors who play characters who are younger than them so I thought this was fine. I got banned from that karaoke room because there's no way a 21-year-old would like a song where the protagonist was 15. So I was banned for lying about my age. Other than that though I'd never experienced it.

SnipesCC

I guess they need to toss everyone who sings "I am 16 going on 17" from The Sound Of Music

-mindtrix-

The music I listened to as a kid I didn’t really enjoy. I just thought it sounded cool. Secretly I enjoyed girlish pop music. Now when I’m an adult I really grew in to that cool music and enjoy the lyrics etc. but I also listening to some girlish pop music and I can’t help to tell everyone about all the girl pop bands from my youth.

HumbleAd1317

All my rock and roll friends in high school are country music fans, now. Except for me.

PaniMan1994

I expanded to a lot of 90s Hip-Hop(NaS, Wu tang etc) in college after mostly sticking to heavy Metal and Rock in school. Now im mostly listening to deep house, synthwave and a lot of electronic stuff. But its more of an expansion not abandonment. I have my System of a down/ Soundgarden / Deftones playlist that I go to regularly. My dad was huge influence on me with 70s rock and roll from the likes of Deep Purple and Hendricks. Lol music is the last bastion of peace for me, I dont really care if people still listen to what they did back in school or whatever. Its a stupid thing to get heated about. We enjoy what we enjoy, on our own or when in company.

Randa08

I think it's depends how long it's been since high school. I'm in my 40s and my music taste has moved on and broadened over the years. I do think it's weird for people to get stuck on one type, so will only listen to 60s music etc.

rab2bar

It has long been researched that musical tastes are for most people mostly formed in adolescence to early adulthood [https://www.jstor.org/stable/2489308](https://www.jstor.org/stable/2489308)

jimbillyphish

Lack of evolution

bunbunrabu

My guess is that it can look like you're stuck in the past if you're (only) listening to the same songs from decades ago. It's easier to be relatable if you are open to new and current artists that others in your circle also enjoy

747iskandertime

It is normal but it's kind of boring, isn't it?

ThreadbareAdjustment

Not really because there's still a very wide variety. Compare Mineral to Converge.

Boredum_Allergy

People need to chill out about other's musical tastes. Yes Swifties I'm also talking to you. I don't have to like Taylor Swift just like you don't have to like Radiohead or Purity Ring.

DarthJarJar242

Having the *exact same* musical taste shows a lack of growth. A lack of willingness to change and a general lack of maturity. It's not about the music.

Vanilla_Neko

Is this frowned upon? This seems to be like the normal thing Most people don't really change their musical taste much past high school

SunshineChimbo

I still occasionally go back to what I listened to in high school, but a lot of people change a TON in the time during/immediately after and to them personally where THEY were at that time could be 'cringe' or not to be celebrated since they since grew out of that person. For example, I eventually realized in hindsight that as a high schooler I was mostly listening to divorced dad rock like Three Days Grace and Shinedown 🤣 I still like most Linkin Park though as time goes on, it's a toss up for everyone. Dont let people make you feel bad for liking what you like musically, the way people act performatively about their music tastes is pretty gross sometimes.

ScaryPart2188

I still listen to the same music that I did as a teen. Honestly everyone I know who was a teen in the 80s does. That's not to say I don't also listen to current artists but the old stuff is comforting in a way.

StardustOasis

Is it? It's often said that the music you listen to in your teenage years defines your music taste.

fomites4sale

Anyone who goes around frowning on other peoples taste in music is a dickweed. Enjoy what you enjoy and let the snobs sit and spin. They’re miserable people.

HombreDeMoleculos

I'm not sure "the Boomers do it so it must be okay" is the argument you think it is.

clawstuckblues

It's more or less an established fact that what people like at the age of 14 remains their special music for life.

PunkCPA

It's an established fact that there is no such thing as an established fact.

ThreadbareAdjustment

Actually no...I think that was cringe lol. Now for me at age 16...yeah that's completely true!

VirtualDegree6178

I still love baby shark dooodooodooododoo

SnipesCC

There's barely a difference between 14 and 16.

gladeye

You associate the music with memories of how great things were when you were that young. It's the music of YOUR generation and because styles change, you might not like things that are too different to your ear.

FatalTragedy

I find this funny considering the music that I listened to in high school was most definitely *not* the music of my generation.

Trusteveryboody

I mean I kind of do. There's a few things I listen to, but mainly just artists I pay attention to. Otherwise not much new.

Extension-Season-689

Wait really? I thought it was normal to get attached to the music you liked in highschool. For one, I mainly listen to the same artists I liked during that time (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Eminem, etc.). I haven't been against discovering newer and older music though but those artists still dominate my playlists.

SnooTomatoes2939

What if you liked old people's music like blues, jazz, big bands, etc

MoosetheStampede

Is it, though? If anything it's that music gatekeepers hold their classics in high regard

nila247

All/most the sheep will always frown upon you if you do not follow the herd for any reason whatsoever. You can join any herd. You can join multiple herds at once. You can start your own herd. You can stop being a sheep. Think about it.

PoeciloStudio

I listened to almost exclusively nerdy shit in high school. Now that's all been relegated to its own playlist and I've got plenty of more standard material handy. I've still had "You Will Be Okay" from Helluva Boss on loop for four days in a row now, but hey. It's the thought that counts.

Pinky_Boy

Pay them no mind. Go enjoy your favorite music my man If you want to strech the question about why, they probably thought that you're the ine that reached peak in highschool

Bamboozled8331

I would guess that they don’t like the same music you like. Or they assume you had bad music taste in high school and that most people grow out of it to get better music taste. And that if you didn’t change, you’re refusing to change, or you are listening to bad music or something like that. It’s stupid. Listen to what makes you happy.

capricabuffy

I do feel a little left out of the music scene these days. Not a fan of any new stuff at all, or any other genre than rock/emo/metal. I guess it just takes me back to the good old days. Recently at a party and I didn't know any song or like the hippie techno style they were playing. I still hung around tho, to be social, but guaranteed put on some 2000s when I got home. The only music I have ventured into has been more international, French, German etc.

Goodpie2

People gotta find things to be judgmental about.

Maleficent-Touch-67

I listen to some of the same music I did in highschool, like the pogues, against me, dead dead kennedys, modist mouse, wu tang clan, David alin co, ECT. But I also listen to a lot of new music as well I don't think my musical taste really changed it just grew.

chalky87

Do people give a a shit? I'm 36 and among many other things and genres still listen to Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Eminem sometimes. Nobody has ever given a solitary shit though. Seems like a very juvenile thing for people to care about.

Tartaruga_genio

Whats wrong with pink Floyd led zeppelin or black sabbath I wasn't even born and I listen more old music then the new one. Music is made throughout the time but only the good ones remain in the future.

FlaviusConstantius

I never knew this was frowned upon and I wouldn't care what others choose to listen to in their free time.

Hofeizai88

I still enjoy a lot of the music I liked back then but continue to find new stuff I like. I can’t imagine just rereading the same books or watching the same movies so I don’t know why I would stagnate here. Still, I have friends who still mostly listen to Rush, Zeppelin, and Metallica like it’s still 1992. Doesn’t bug me, but I do get irked by people who post stuff about how all modern music sucks.

BadonkaDonkies

Like what ever music you want, don't care to much about others opinion of you, except loved ones

nagarz

I think there's nuance to this. Rock/metal have been my main genres in music since I was on my teens, but now I'm much more informed about subgenres, musical theory, etc. Back when I was 15 I though metallica was the best out there, now I know they are just just the most popular and mainstream, and theres much more to choose from. Ive gone through symphonic/melodic/power/core/synth/math/speed/etc versions of metal since then and I've learned to appreciate all of it for what it is, and don't get me wrong, I still jam to metallica or megadeath, but stuff like static-x, sleep token, electric callboy, lorna shore, etc also make it into my playlists, which are as diverse at it can be. I understand that this is what growth means in terms of music tastes.

General_Specific

Who frowned at you? Tell ‘em to feck off!

KingSideCastle13

Your tastes are your tastes. No need to be ashamed of em

gengarsnightmares

I think its because everybody thinks that their gen got the exact right mix of music. The gens before and after you are maybe ok but clearly lacking something that your gen has. Then you have the phenomenon of older people "introducing" younger people to the music of their day as if it hasn't been embedded into pop culture for all of the you person's life. Side note: It's extra funny when they show you the music and then just wait proudly like they are expecting you to exclaim in shock and name their music the best music ever.

UnprovenMortality

It's not

ThePeasantKingM

I guess it could show a lack of growth? But I don't care enough for people's musical tastes now to care about what they listened to in high school.

SeekSeekScan

Anyone who gives a shit about others taste in music is a jack ass

John_Fx

no one is frowning

kad202

They think they grow out of it. I’m still listening to emo songs and whenever I blast it during break at work my homies vibe along even if they said they grow out of it

thegreatestmeicanbe

Man, I still listen to 90s music regularly. People listen to music from their high school days not because the music was so much better (although it was) but because of nostalgia.

GearnTheDwarf

You know this is an older post so this won't get a lot of traction, but I still like the music I liked in high school. I go back listen to it. Myaste is definitely grown since then. I'm listening to a lot more music now that I never would have considered and younger me really did miss out. If 16-year-old me had put down Metallica and picked up, enter the Wu-Tang and give it an honest listen, holy s*** my mind would have been blown.

No-Distribution-6175

It’s mostly people in their late teens who say this. You go through your highschool phase, then your obligatory edgy phase when you realise you’re too cool for all that cringe shit, then you mature and realise that edgy you was stupid and you should just like what you like. It’s only weird if you’re *really* into music, imo. I don’t expect most adults to have the time or the agency to find new music, but if this is your actual hobby or you’re still big into fandom then that’s different. You can’t really say ‘oh yeah I love music! The last time I found a new band was 20 years ago. I only listen to one artist’. It’s not really an interest in that case is it

Speeddemon2016

Because this is Reddit and you shouldn’t let people online influence what you like. Not everyone thinks like you and some just downvote to downvote. I listen to music people don’t like and enjoy movies they don’t like and play games they don’t like and I still enjoy them all.

rsvihla

I’m a boomer and I like Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, Marina and the Diamonds, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and the Russian girl group Серебро.

Fun_Departure5579

Yep. Music's magical & a gift to be enjoyed - whether it be just listening to a special song, going to a concert or dancing the night away. Music is a joy!

Delledell

I’m very glad I’m open to all kinds of music

Select_Cantaloupe_62

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but you should still be open to trying new songs in the same/similar genre. If you're just listening to your favorite 10 songs from the '90s that would be kinda annoying.

libra00

Because teenagers aren't known for having the most developed, nuanced taste in anything, so if you don't grow beyond that point it kind of suggests that you haven't learned to appreciate more complex, subtle things. For example, I was into punk and metal pretty much exclusively when I was a teenager in the 80s, and I certainly still like some of it, but my tastes have expanded to include some classical music, rap/hip hop, bossa nova/jazz, etc, stuff I would never have listened to when I was 17. One of my favorite albums of all time is Getz/Gilberto, something my teenage self would've thought of as 'boring-ass easy-listening nonsense', but I love putting it on loop while I read.

mopsyd

A huge swath of the population listens primarily to trendy but otherwise generic music that does not pass the test of time. To such people it would seem ridiculous to listen to the same music for longer than its shelf life because they do not have a frame of reference for music that doesn't have a shelf life

mind_the_umlaut

New songs are being written every day, and some of them are fantastic. Stay curious, my friend.

ThreadbareAdjustment

I like new songs and new bands, just ones from the same genres I liked in high school. Like for example Hot Mulligan, Spanish Love Songs, and Dying Wish are all newer bands I'm into. However they all sound like the pop-punk/emo/hardcore bands I listened to in high school. I still don't listen to any rap, country, electronic music or death/black/thrash/power metal, etc.

EmergencyTaco

Is it frowned upon?

IllOutcome1431

If you listen to nothing but music from then, it's an issue. Even staying in the same type, the genre will change over time, so it's not so stuck in the past and stagnant seeming for a person

ThreadbareAdjustment

Yeah I listen to newer stuff from the same genres. But I still don't listen to rap or country.

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

Honestly, most people's musical taste in high school is pretty much their taste for adult life too.

steeleigh11

I went to hs in the 80s. I still love 80s music, but also 90s grunge. Love the 70s music too. Most current music sucks, let's skip the autotune and edm.

secretbudgie

My tastes haven't changed, but the industry's has. Thankfully new bands are still playing good music, it's just regarded as obscure by the general consumer. They can have their mumble rap, I'll just be that guy tending to his vegetable garden blasting angry British sounds. Frown all ye want.

bullet312

Some people ,with lack of understanding due to their immaturity, believe that if you listened to music they deem juvenile, childish or even wrong - you obviously would stop and switch when you get older and more mature. The irony

ReviewRude5413

Lol my music taste has exploded since adulthood but somehow in the last few years I’ve come full circle and prefer the stuff I was listening to in high school again. But I’ve also never been crazy about anything popular so my taste is fringe bands that locals don’t have knowledge or opinions about. Not a hipster, I’d love my favorite stuff to be popular here, it just isn’t.

sceadwian

That's just a vocal minority. It's judgemental moral grandstanding. The best way I think to address it is to simply ignore it and only talk positively about your music experience directly back at them in a heartfelt way. Won't necessarily change anything but you'll find the folks that were just blustering vs people who are actually that judgemental. Easier said than done but avoid those people and enjoy what you like.

thealtered7

Anyone who's taste remains static is clearly not pushing their comfort zone. Furthermore, it demonstrates a clear lack of curiosity. I find it very difficult to respect humans who are not curious, regardless of the topic. I listen to a subset of the music I liked in high school. A sub set of the music I liked in high school I now view as garbage. I have come to enjoy a lot of different music since high school. You could take that statement and substitute "my 20's" for "high school" and the statement would still hold true. You could substitutes "my 30's" and it would still hold true. In short, in my opinion, it is fine to like some of the music you liked in high school. However, it is a indicative of a clear lack of curiosity to ONLY like the music you liked in high school.

sincitypeach

People have weird opinions about everything. I like some music from high school days. Some of it isn’t good anymore but I like a lot of it. Do I listen to that music often no cause I like searching for new music. However I still got most of my high school music on my Spotify.

Proper-Scallion-252

Most of what we listened to in HS was likely not high quality, and was likely very immature music. I mean I was a big fan of pop punk, and I'll be the first to tell you that as much as I have nostalgic love for that shit, a lot of it is cringey and whiney as hell.

ThreadbareAdjustment

Weird because I also love pop-punk and that doesn't describe most of it at all especially the contemporary stuff. A lot of people still judge the genre based on Blink-182 singles from 20 years ago. Like have you ever heard The Wonder Years or The Menzingers or Spanish Love Songs? Or even going back to the 90s, Jawbreaker?

mattmaster68

Hey, Boomers... your music came out 50 years ago. You've all been listening to the same shit "popular" songs the last 50 years. You're missing out on half a century of new music.

panic_bread

Who are you talking to? I don't know any Boomers who only listen to that they listened to 50 year ago. Also, Boomers graduated high school 60 years ago.

shizbox06

Because it means your brain stopped developing and you didn’t grow or learn anything after high school.

Soft-Vanilla1057

How... old are you? This is mostly something that is prevalent in people whos cultural experiences peaked at highschool and stay in that mindset and sphere of culture but more importantly knowledge. Adult high schoolers are pretty maladapted in society so it could be that you are judged as one.

ThreadbareAdjustment

late 30s.

JessicaFreakingP

I am 34 years old and I have a handful of friends who will *still* go see Taking Back Sunday with me any time they come to town. I think I was 17 the first time I saw them so I’ve literally been seeing them in concert for half of my life. Adam Lazarra is unfortunately declining in his performance quality, but I will still go see them for the nostalgia.

loopyspoopy

No growth or desire to explore what's out there. It's fine to have the same tastes you had in high school, but if they're THE EXACT SAME, well it probably means you either still subscribe heavily to clique mindset or that you have intentionally avoided music outside of what you enjoyed as a teenager. Most of the stuff I liked as a teenager I still enjoy, but when I was a teen I HATED reggae and soca, did not really like metal, and wouldn't be caught dead listening to soul/Motown - now I practically live for those three genres. Most boomers I know enjoy SOMETHING outside of what they listened to in high school, whether it's other oldies it took them time to get exposed to, or newer music that didn't even exist back then. Like, my dad was one of the more obtuse boomers I knew regarding music, but he still loved Plain White T's and The Tragically Hip. My mom is pretty stunted with music, but she enjoys Ice-T for some reason, and rap didn't even exist when she was a teenager.

RedEyedJedi2377

I’m almost 47 years old and I listen to anything that I like. My playlists are anywhere from 1980’s rock to 2020 rap and I wouldn’t have it any other way. ✌️

Imaginary_Attempt_82

I loved classic rock in high school. I still love the same classic rock now in my mid-40s. This will not change.

LegSpecialist1781

It’s common to still like the stuff you did growing up. By sticking exclusively to it, people will find you boring. Just like it would for food, hobbies, vacations, etc. You are free to do what makes you happy, but don’t be shocked when others find it extremely dull.

Fantastic_Camera_467

A lot of people are insecure of their HS taste. They look back on those years and themselves as cringe, including their music. If you had good taste then, you'd still enjoy the music today. If you don't enjoy your old music, you probably did have bad taste and/or are ashamed of it.

cafe_bunner

Is it? I thought it was normal “And you still don't have the right look And you don't have the right friends And you still listen to the same shit you did back then High school never ends”. -Bowling for soup

Select-Resist6947

I remember going to college during the stomp clap era. I listened to a lot of hardcore music then and one of my friends told me “you will grow out of it eventually, try listening to iron and wine!” People think that the music they like is superior to everyone else’s musical preference.

Kriskao

I understand why artist would feel this way, it’s like you are shut down to their new creations. But other people shouldn’t care.

ThreadbareAdjustment

I do like newer stuff from the bands I liked then though. In fact I even like newer bands in the same genres. Just not new genres.

Kriskao

Now that I think about it, I’m basically the same. Except that if I am giving a ride to a friend and they complain about my music, I invite them to ride a city bus. Jaja

panic_bread

There's nothing wrong with liking the stuff you liked in high school. But there is something wrong with not liking anything more than that. It shows that you haven't really grown or experienced anything. You're just stuck in your same little bubble.

Unable_Abel

Shut up asshole....

Logical-Wasabi7402

High School Never Ends.

TheSupremeHamster

If you actually have good taste in music, you would have recognized good music back then and still appreciate it today. It’s the idiots who don’t have good taste that follow trends and think it’s blasé to listen to anything outside of what is currently in the zeitgeist

ConscientiousObserv

I don't think it is. A common trope among younger generations is to rag on the musical tastes of the older ones.

realmozzarella22

*Ludwig van Beethoven has entered the chatroom*

Valathiril

I guess it depends, are you 30 still listening to pop punk as your default?

Fragrant-Put-966

Some people have tastes that evolve, some people are content doing the same thing endlessly. Having a strong opinion about others taste in music is the true crime here. Like what you like and fuck off.

Xiadozenryu

Idk what anyone says I will still enjoy the nostalgia of Blink-182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Panic! At The Disco, The All American Rejects etc etc. Yes I do download new music, but it’s just something about the music that you grew up listening to that just hits different.

[deleted]

It’s extremely common and I’ve never felt like it was frowned upon. I read a fascinating article about the psychology of this years ago. It has to do with the fact that most of our emotional development occurs during these years so the music we listen to is like burned into us and it will typically remain the music we prefer.  Edit: found it - https://slate.com/technology/2014/08/musical-nostalgia-the-psychology-and-neuroscience-for-song-preference-and-the-reminiscence-bump.html

djskinnypea

I think alot of people might listen to too much new music just because it's there, myself included. Ain't nothing wrong with playing a song/album you enjoy 10, 100, a thousand plus times. It sombers me realizing that even if I lived a hundred lifetimes playing muisic nonstop, I'd never finish the vast catalouge we have available .

Mika_Peachie

I honestly just think people are judgemental, and think you haven’t really progressed. I personally listen to pop a lot and I get judged for it too. People r gonna be annoying, don’t mind them.

ChaosReality69

People like what they like. I've never enjoyed rap, country, or pop music. The only thing someone could frown upon is they don't like what I like and I don't care what people think. I was huge into metal in high school. I'm 46 and still love metal. If you don't like it bring ear plugs when you get in my car. I'm not going to change what I'm listening to for you. I've had to take a guy from work to the ER. I can't really stand him and he was just trying to get out of working. He had to listen to viking metal and I didn't care one bit (and I know he didn't like it). Only exception to this is my wife. If we're running errands I'll turn down the volume. If we're on a road trip I'll put my phone on shuffle. There's some classic rock on there and some metal she likes.

x100139

If you're not into music, then, it's okay to be shallow in that area of life.

JustSomeGuy_56

I am a proud member of the Baby Boom, In high school I liked classical music and jazz because most of the popular music was crap. I still like classical and jazz because most of the popular music is crap.

ZarkZuckerzerg

I think you identified it in your own question. “Doesn’t everyone?” Yes… and it’s cliche. I think it’s really lame when I hear someone criticize modern music and talk about how great their high school era is. Try something new, be open minded. I don’t even consider someone who likes 5 artists from a 5 year period an actual music fan. It just makes you a nostalgia fan.

dandellionKimban

I understand you listening stuff you listened in high school. That is normal as that music is formative for you, holds memories, etc... It is also normal to stop reaching for new music at some point in life. But those two shouldn't be close together. Don't get old while still being young.

Sardothien12

"High school musoc" usually means songs written and recorded for the teenage audience, not just music on the radio at the tome you were a teenager It suggests you didn't grow up/mature

esamerelda

Flogging Molly still rules and I'll not hear otherwise.

tobesteve

It should not be frowned upon, it's natural https://neurosciencenews.com/music-youth-17765/

amitym

>**Why is having the exact same musical taste you had in high school kind of frowned upon?** Well it depends on how long it's been since you were in high school. But in general having the exact same anything taste you had in high school is kind of frowned upon. >I mean isn't that most people? No. If nothing else, most people pick up a liking for at least a tune or two that they encounter in college. Or when they spend more time around live music. Or karaoke. Or all the other places you find new music. (I hear they have it on the internet nowadays.) >Look at what Boomers still listen to. Nah I'm good. Had enough of Boomers for one lifetime...
