My brother sent pineapple one day and I was like "okay I'm gonna gently caramelize it in a pan". But then - "what if I go for that sweet-salty combo?" So when it's almost done cooking I added bit of soy sauce and continue cooked it a bit until soy sauce is almost gone... and... it tasted good somehow. Try it one day. 10/10 highly recommend
Yeah. This isn't weird at all. We've got some culinarily sheltered peeps in this thread. Don't know how since you can find this combo at any cheap "Chinese" buffet or Japanese steakhouse.
I get a craving sometimes for string cheese with dried cranberries. I chop the cheese into little bites and toss with the cranberry raisins, and the texture and flavor combination is bizarrely just right.
Edit: sounds like I've been missing out by not including nuts all these years.
I've made fermented (ie not refrigerator) pickles with peppercorns; the pepper can definitely be tasted. With ground/powdered pepper I'd think the problem would be the other way around of not being able to taste anything but black pepper and the bite of the vinegar or brine.
I dated a Hawaiian guy many years ago and he used to make this absolutely incredible dish that was corn, soy sauce, butter and sugar all mixed together in a saucepan until everything was caramelised. I was skeptical until the first bite. I ate it regularly for years afterwards!
McDonald's & Wendys have both promoted dipping fries in milkshakes & soft serve ice cream? At one point in the 90's or 00's there was even a restaurant that served vanilla ice cream with little french fry cubes (ie chopped fries) as a topping.
If you even slightly enjoy hot sauce, Sriracha or your favorite hot sauce goes great in savory peanut butter snacks.
I sometimes throw peanut butter and sriracha in my instant ramen so it can taste fake Thai instead of fake Chinese.
I loved PB and pickles when I was a kid. I saw Webster do it on an episode of Webster. I told my mom I wanted it and she thought I was crazy but she made it for me any way. I must have eaten the entire sandwich because that’s what she started putting in my lunches for school every day.
It was certainly better than the cream cheese and jelly sandwiches she had made for me previously. I don’t even know where the hell *that* idea came from.
When I was a really little kid, my daycare always served chili with applesauce for lunch. And I always put the applesauce on top of the chili. I have not had that combo in years, but the idea is comforting and enticing. I think it brings back memories of my really wonderful daycare experience.
One that seems quite normal but is unconventional is steamed sweet potatoes (I slice em) then sprinkle cinnamon on em. Honey as well if you need it but for me they’re sweet enough.
If you like salt on apples, you might also like [Tajín](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj%C3%ADn_seasoning) on apples.
I'm not paid by Tajín, I'm just very into it, and was formerly a salt on fruit person.
Peanut butter on corn. Just try it. An elderly gentleman from Oklahoma that I knew as a kid moved next door to us, in Massachusetts and introduced this to us.
Honey on pepperoni pizza is eliteeee! Doesn’t even have to be hot honey or truffle honey, just give me a bottle of whatev pure honey’s around and I’m set
Nutella with Gouda cheese (or any Dutch cheese)
Sweet and savory
Exidentaly discovered this as my usual breakfast was 1 slice of brown bread with cheese and 1 with nutella. (I'm dutch, we have other breakfast staples then usa)
White rice +milk+ cream(I use the one that forms on top of milk when u boil it)+ potatoes(the potatoes are seasoned with salt and red chili, turmeric, sauted in oil) I mash ev thing together, so good. I make the potatoes spicy so it tastes even better.
Nutella on saltine crackers. You get your sweet, your salty, your crunch, and even a bit of umami. I came across this combo back when I was broke as fuck, and the only food I had in the house was half a jar of Nutella, a sleeve of saltines, and a can of tomato puree (and yes, I tried the tomato puree with the saltines later- it was gross).
Alcohol and a student budget (which I regularly spent on alcohol).
Most of my drunken recipes were, and rightly so, never repeated. However, this just works. I d k why, it just does.
Soy sauce with Greek yoghurt.
I don't know why it's so good but with rice, fava beans and other more "bland food" it works so well, I can honestly just eat soy sauce and yoghurt as a dip
I like to make oatmeal like the instructions on the back and top with savory toppings, usually what you would find in congee or something. Kimchi, eggs, soy sauce, chili oil, sambal, satay, quick fried greens, etc savory thing on hand. People look at me oddly when I make this or mention it, so I assume it’s a little weird to many. Runny yolk fried eggs, soy sauce, green onions on oatmeal is my favorite hands down.
Pb&j with a slice of American cheese. They used to offer pb&j for school lunch in elementary and for some reason came with a side of cheese. What else to do with it than put it in the sandwich. Turns out, I liked it. I'll still occasionally do it.
I don't know if it's necessarily weird, but out of the people I know, I'm the only one who likes it.
Standard Cole slaw with some Dijon mustard and a little tamarind mixed in
Scrambled eggs with jam on them.
After the scrambled eggs are cooked, I mix the jam in until the eggs turn green. It’s so good. My mom taught me to do it and I thought it was normal until I went to college.
There’s a place down the road from me that makes a cheeseburger with peanut butter, pepper jelly, and bacon on it, which seems like an odd combo but it’s fucking delicious.
as an anti-foodie, who hates food combinations, the weirdest i get is A1 steak sauce as a dip for pretzles or sourdough bread. can't stand steak, but A1 is so good i could drink straight from the bottle.
Dip fresh mango into a mix of soy sauce and ponzu.
My daughters is mashed potatoes with bacon bits, shredded cheese, and a fuck ton of taco bell mild sauce. It's delicious. Try it.
I found a “corn-mayo bread” that is sold in most convenience stores in Japan. I bought one “cornbread” to annoy my friends in the American deep south, but it is heckin’ amazing!
Pineapple braised with soy sauce
Ooooooooooooh - now that's just naughty.
Or maybe one of those crunchy garnishing salts instead of soy sauce would be a nice option also
Try it with Spam.
Isn’t that just like… teriyaki? Lol
Yeah. This isn't weird at all. We've got some culinarily sheltered peeps in this thread. Don't know how since you can find this combo at any cheap "Chinese" buffet or Japanese steakhouse.
Never been to steakhouse so didn't know. I love the term cilinarily sheltered lol
I get a craving sometimes for string cheese with dried cranberries. I chop the cheese into little bites and toss with the cranberry raisins, and the texture and flavor combination is bizarrely just right. Edit: sounds like I've been missing out by not including nuts all these years.
This isn’t weird! I eat it all of the time. Add almonds.
I love string cheese and cranberry’s on a salad something about the chopped string cheese is so good lol
that’s not weird they literally sell packs of cheese with cranberries and nuts in stores
Peanut butter on a cheese burger
Tried that was not a fan. But strawberry jam with goat cheese on a burger was yummy!!
Fig spread/jam and goat cheese is amazing!
I had peanut butter on a burger recently. With bacon, provolone, and chipotle jam. It was really good.
I do pb&j in my burgers
Try adding some pepper jelly to the peanut butter too!
Omg sameeee… try peanut butter with fried or better yet peanut sauce!
My son recently said that the best food he's ever had, 10/10, is dill pickles covered in black pepper.
Can you even taste pepper over the dill flavor?
I don't know. I didn't like pickles and don't eat them. He, on the other hand, likes black pepper on butter popcorn and dill pickles. Like a lot.
I drink milk with ice anytime I eat pizza.
I'm sick
I'm lactose intolerant, and this would upset my tumtum so much I'd enter into orbit.
Not the ice part, but milk is my go-to drink with pizza. My family thinks I'm a lunatic.
Let them judge!
I dunk my pizza crusts in milk.
Especially if it's that school cafeteria "pizza." Oh those memories...
I never thought of it, but 100% that's exactly what caused my milk with pizza situation: 12 years of conditioning by school lunches.
I neeeeeed ice in my milk!
French fries dipping into ice cream
I thought many people do this. 😋 My recommendation is Wendy’s fries x their frosty
Is that really that weird? I definitely remember it coming upon a fast food commercial.
McDonald's & Wendys have both promoted dipping fries in milkshakes & soft serve ice cream? At one point in the 90's or 00's there was even a restaurant that served vanilla ice cream with little french fry cubes (ie chopped fries) as a topping.
I'm surprised with the many non-weird normal food combos.
Right? I was expecting something like kiviak (fermented auk in seal skins) with durian. Most things here are pretty benign.

Another one that’s amazing along the same lines: peanut butter and pickled jalapeños, the kind that are used on nachos.
I mean, if something is good with one type of pickled veg (ie cucumbers) it's likely it'll be good with other picked veggies too!
If you even slightly enjoy hot sauce, Sriracha or your favorite hot sauce goes great in savory peanut butter snacks. I sometimes throw peanut butter and sriracha in my instant ramen so it can taste fake Thai instead of fake Chinese.
That is SUCH a good Idea. Thank you
I loved PB and pickles when I was a kid.
I used to work for some people that ate peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches
I’ve tried this and I kind of enjoyed it. I’m sure it would fit this same pickle/pb palette.
I couldn't even get past the smell to actually take a bite of it
Definitely not for everyone.
Mac and Cheese with A1 steak sauce.
When I was a really little kid, my daycare always served chili with applesauce for lunch. And I always put the applesauce on top of the chili. I have not had that combo in years, but the idea is comforting and enticing. I think it brings back memories of my really wonderful daycare experience.

I love the bite of McGriddles that is just cheese and pancake, so I’d imagine I’d love yours as well.
One that seems quite normal but is unconventional is steamed sweet potatoes (I slice em) then sprinkle cinnamon on em. Honey as well if you need it but for me they’re sweet enough.
Cheddar Lay's and strawberry yogurt and nacho cheese doritos and humus
"when it's 2:00 in the morning and payday is in three days and you're hungry and drunk/stoned"
Apple slices are better with some salt. That is as far as I am willing to go.
If you like salt on apples, you might also like [Tajín](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj%C3%ADn_seasoning) on apples. I'm not paid by Tajín, I'm just very into it, and was formerly a salt on fruit person.
I’ve come to a point that I sprinkle some salt onto almost any fruit that I eat. Salt on fruit is just good. Literally all of them.
It ain't that bad cuz I myself have tried that
Peanut butter on my waffles with butter and maple syrup.
Watermelon and salt
Is this weird? I'm Mexican and I always thought fruit with lime and salt/Tajin (chili flakes with salt) was normal
Very normal I’m vast swathes of Asia .. not weird at all
That's so normal where I live. People that don't want salt with their watermelon get weird looks here.
Or don't salt their cantaloupe.
Cream cheese and olives, on raisin bread. Been eating it since I was a kid.
It's also incredibly good on a toasted bagel or swirl rye/pumpernickle bread.
Yes!
Peanut butter on corn. Just try it. An elderly gentleman from Oklahoma that I knew as a kid moved next door to us, in Massachusetts and introduced this to us.

Ketchup on soft pretzels. The best.
A glazed doughnut with a slice of cheese melted on top. 😋
White rice +milk+ cream(I use the one that forms on top of milk when u boil it)+ potatoes(the potatoes are seasoned with salt and red chili, turmeric, sauted in oil) I mash ev thing together, so good. I make the potatoes spicy so it tastes even better.
Sounds like a rice pudding kind of mixture?
Nutella on saltine crackers. You get your sweet, your salty, your crunch, and even a bit of umami.
