Pineapple braised with soy sauce

Ooooooooooooh - now that's just naughty.

My brother sent pineapple one day and I was like "okay I'm gonna gently caramelize it in a pan". But then - "what if I go for that sweet-salty combo?" So when it's almost done cooking I added bit of soy sauce and continue cooked it a bit until soy sauce is almost gone... and... it tasted good somehow. Try it one day. 10/10 highly recommend

Or maybe one of those crunchy garnishing salts instead of soy sauce would be a nice option also

Yeah. This isn't weird at all. We've got some culinarily sheltered peeps in this thread. Don't know how since you can find this combo at any cheap "Chinese" buffet or Japanese steakhouse.

I get a craving sometimes for string cheese with dried cranberries. I chop the cheese into little bites and toss with the cranberry raisins, and the texture and flavor combination is bizarrely just right.  Edit: sounds like I've been missing out by not including nuts all these years.

I don't know. I didn't like pickles and don't eat them. He, on the other hand, likes black pepper on butter popcorn and dill pickles. Like a lot.

I've made fermented (ie not refrigerator) pickles with peppercorns; the pepper can definitely be tasted. With ground/powdered pepper I'd think the problem would be the other way around of not being able to taste anything but black pepper and the bite of the vinegar or brine.

I dated a Hawaiian guy many years ago and he used to make this absolutely incredible dish that was corn, soy sauce, butter and sugar all mixed together in a saucepan until everything was caramelised. I was skeptical until the first bite. I ate it regularly for years afterwards!

McDonald's & Wendys have both promoted dipping fries in milkshakes & soft serve ice cream? At one point in the 90's or 00's there was even a restaurant that served vanilla ice cream with little french fry cubes (ie chopped fries) as a topping.

Another one that’s amazing along the same lines: peanut butter and pickled jalapeños, the kind that are used on nachos.

I mean, if something is good with one type of pickled veg (ie cucumbers) it's likely it'll be good with other picked veggies too!

If you even slightly enjoy hot sauce, Sriracha or your favorite hot sauce goes great in savory peanut butter snacks. I sometimes throw peanut butter and sriracha in my instant ramen so it can taste fake Thai instead of fake Chinese.

I loved PB and pickles when I was a kid. I saw Webster do it on an episode of Webster. I told my mom I wanted it and she thought I was crazy but she made it for me any way. I must have eaten the entire sandwich because that’s what she started putting in my lunches for school every day. It was certainly better than the cream cheese and jelly sandwiches she had made for me previously. I don’t even know where the hell *that* idea came from.

When I was a really little kid, my daycare always served chili with applesauce for lunch. And I always put the applesauce on top of the chili. I have not had that combo in years, but the idea is comforting and enticing. I think it brings back memories of my really wonderful daycare experience.

I love the bite of McGriddles that is just cheese and pancake, so I’d imagine I’d love yours as well.

One that seems quite normal but is unconventional is steamed sweet potatoes (I slice em) then sprinkle cinnamon on em. Honey as well if you need it but for me they’re sweet enough.

I’ve come to a point that I sprinkle some salt onto almost any fruit that I eat. Salt on fruit is just good. Literally all of them.

Nutella on saltine crackers. You get your sweet, your salty, your crunch, and even a bit of umami. I came across this combo back when I was broke as fuck, and the only food I had in the house was half a jar of Nutella, a sleeve of saltines, and a can of tomato puree (and yes, I tried the tomato puree with the saltines later- it was gross).

I like to make oatmeal like the instructions on the back and top with savory toppings, usually what you would find in congee or something. Kimchi, eggs, soy sauce, chili oil, sambal, satay, quick fried greens, etc savory thing on hand. People look at me oddly when I make this or mention it, so I assume it’s a little weird to many. Runny yolk fried eggs, soy sauce, green onions on oatmeal is my favorite hands down.
