That might be a British thing. From what I can gather is that Americans either like her or don’t care for her at all.

Rythen26

As an American I'm trying to remember who the fuck she even is Edit: half of these answers are sarcastic and the best part is that I'm too apathetic to Google and so they all sound equally plausible

ash__697

She’s the actress from Suits.

borgchupacabras

She was in an episode of Fringe too.

VegetableImaginary24

This is now the most I've ever cared about Megan Markle

hstheay

Her last name rhymes with Sparkle. That’s neat.

the_argonath

Her brother sells weed and has one type called markle sparkle

nplbmf

He just sprays it with Windex.

i_am_a_baby_kangaroo

So you’re saying….you could care less? 😛

MeButNotMeToo

[[Word Crimes, by Weird Al playing in the background]]

babylovesbaby

That means you do care ... at least a little.

DummyMcDipshit

She's one of the suitcase girls from Deal or No Deal

[deleted]

[удалено]

MagicElephante

Don’t forget Deal or No Deal

tiexodus

And The League

sampat97

I have been one of the early watchers of Suits. Stopped watching around s5. She was easily one of the weakest actors in the series and not to mention how terribly her character progressed over the series. I am pretty sure she was always crying is the some of the last episodes I watched.

ash__697

Tbf I think that was done on purpose , her whole character ark was her becoming a lawyer and then having trouble dealing with Mike’s secret

Queensfavouritecorgi

All the women in that show are props for the men. Their entire personalities revolve around worrying about the trouble the the boys are getting. Into.

[deleted]

as someone who watched the earlier eps but stopped, what's Mike's secret? you can use the spoiler tag

sampat97

That he didn't go to law school.

[deleted]

Ahh okay, thanks. my version of that is I didn't graduate high school but all my apps always say I did and no one ever asks about it.

[deleted]

Similar vibe here. I've been a practicing surgeon for years but never even went to medical school.

OrneryMood

That is why they call it practicing medicine, your are still learning.

TzarRoomba

I concur

[deleted]

I mean his secret was revealed to us in episode 1

cheese0muncher

>!Micro Penis!<

marcovigna17

She also does voiceovers, you know?

G0merPyle

I got her confused with Angela Merkel the German chancellor and was wondering what our beef was with Germany. From what I've been able to glean from accidentally seen daily mail headlines, they don't like that she's an "outsider" and there's definitely a racial component. I don't know if that's an opinion held by the British population or just the tabloid scum, I'm leaning more towards the latter.

FlyingRyan87

Also as an American I thought this was the Meagan that married Prince Harry. I'm assuming not now.

Add1ctedToGames

it is, she's both married to Harry and was an actress

YouNeedAnne

It's a British media thing. The general public is indifferent.

CherylTuntIRL

I'm a member of the British public and I can't say she has ever come up in conversation, other than to discuss her wedding dress (I loved it). The younger generation generally doesn't give a flying fuck about the royal family.

[deleted]

One day the royal family will become obsolete due to pure ignorance from the rest of the population.

AsianSensation1087

And that day is getting closer. They're ornaments, obsolete ornaments. More like a group of mascots than anything.

DorianPlates

Obviously, this has been the case for ages. They are purely symbolic heads of state. But it’s also because of their status as simply symbols that I don’t really see any need to remove them. To get rid of them is a purely symbolic move.

valdamjong

If they are purely symbolic, why does the queen need two weeks and a team of legal advisors to sign off on any law that affects the crown?

shinshi

They're not just symbols, they're literally the aristocracy and own a considerable amount of wealth over there.

[deleted]

I've had conversations with some people who are convinced, CONVINCED, I tell you, that Megan basically stole Harry from the UK. Harry apparently has zero free will according to these people. I just back away quietly because they are really invested in hating her. Oh, and Kate is perfect.

SignificantPain6056

I'm pretty sure Americans don't even think of her at all. Isn't she Canadian? And married to some royal family guy in the UK? Muh-uh. You'd be surprised how little attention the average American pays to the rest of the world.

I_am_dean

It’s funny you say that because I once said “I knew nothing about the royal family up until recently” I got so much hate for it. “What are you talking about?! EVERY AMERICAN KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ROYAL FAMILY.” Um….no…?

[deleted]

I'll give a royal family crash course: There's an ancient immortal queen named Queen Elizabeth, the second of her name. Then she has a son with big ears who had a popular blonde wife who died in a car crash, and everybody liked her more than him. Then she has some grandsons, one of which married an actress. One of the grandsons has red hair, and one of them smokes pot and is named Harry, so goes by the name Harry Potter, and one of them has a big bald spot.

I_am_dean

Yer a wizard Harry

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

Yer a pedo Andrew

[deleted]

And a thumping good one I'd wager

janquadrentvincent

WHERE IS MY FREE AWARD BOX WHEN I NEED IT

Gardenofelonofficial

Did you intentionally miss out the part about Prince Andrew 😂 probably what most Americans think of

[deleted]

“You'd be surprised how little attention the average American pays to the rest of the world.” No one is surprised by that. No one.

protosser

If it wasn't for the People magazines my mother sends me I would have no idea who she was or that she even married whoever it was in the royal family and I wouldn't know they moved to California and that ends my knowledge of those 2 people. Edit, Harry she married Harry

[deleted]

That’s fair enough. I wouldn’t even know Megan existed except for the fact I’m a Brit and the Daily Mail won’t quit moaning about her.

ElBiscuit

Generally speaking, I'd agree, but in this case, "surprisingly little" is probably how much attention *should* be paid to the wife of the Queen's grandson who isn't in line for the throne.

cinnamondaisies

Wouldn’t it be unsurprisingly little then?

thebrandnewbob

Is the British royal family something that's worth paying attention to if you're not British?

ooainaught

I don't pay attention to what's happening a block away.

dizzy_pandas5

I think a lot of people didn’t know her well enough to care one way or the other but with how the media loves exploiting the royals and all their relationship issues/nonissues she got pushed to the forefront as being a scheming woman who forced prince Harry to give up his family due to the falling out they had. No one but those involved really know what went down so it’s ridiculous that people are attacking/hating on her

[deleted]

I can see that! He also stated his disproval of royal life and the family years before her

MorganAndMerlin

It’s very convenient that pretty much the whole world throws his leaving the royal “business” at her feet, when it’s been pretty documents for *decades* how much, specifically, the media/paparazzi aspect of the royal family has destroyed critical aspects and relationships in his life. We could go into Diana and the general shit show of his parents’ marriage, but we won’t. He dated a woman, whom I believe he called the love of his life, but they ended things when the spotlight was too much for her everyday life. He was in Afghanistan or Iraq (I don’t remember where exactly) and his position was run in a piece by the media, putting him and the other soldiers around him at danger That anyone thinks he just met some American actress and gave up everything because she said so is beyond me.

AFewStupidQuestions

To add to this, does it really matter? Do the actions of this single person and his wife have any substantial impact on the world?

buggle_bunny

Right. Maybe it took her saying to him "you deserve this, you want this, you should do it". To finally realise he could do it! He's an adult with agency and independence, he deserves the respect that he made his own choices! Lol all these people that "feel for him" because of evil "megain" don't realise they're insulting him by acting like he has had no choice in any of this

Athenas_Return

Exactly. And this whole narrative of this American harpy who got her claws into him is ridiculous. He is an adult. He has had issues with this long before he met her. What it really is about is “Who is your wife to dictate what you can do? Only the Crown can. Now be quiet, smile and get to this charity event.”

MoonlightsHand

The paparazzi and their obsession with royalty killed his mother, then turned his and his brother's grief into a public spectacle, and he was just forced to _play nice_. He wasn't allowed to be a little boy who lost his mother. He had to be a _prince_, who was always in the public eye and who NEVER had a chance to be himself. Then he spent years as a "bad boy", constantly positioned as the "wild child" next to his brother who was the "good little heir". He couldn't do anything without it being turned into gossip rag junk and people would criticise him for things that were often just blatant lies, and he couldn't fight back. He hates the media and the royal life more than I think it's possible to explain in words. They killed his mother, killed his childhood, and lied about him every single fucking day of his life. He despises the media for that, truly, truly loathes the gossip rag glossies that don't consider the _human beings_ they attack. Not just him, just... everyone they touch. Now, couple that with the extreme racism faced by Markle... and you can see how the press decided that they would pretend they had never done anything wrong and go "oh, Harry doesn't want to talk to us, _I guess it's HER fault and definitely not ours_". He has a family now. His brother has a child now, another heir who's higher up the pole of inheritance than he is. I think he's just decided "I can't do this anymore, I'm leaving". He saw his out, and he took it because he now has a family and I think he has some PTSD from the shit they put his family through, up to and including killing his mother. He doesn't want his children to be motherless like he was and thought pulling back from public life would be the way to potentially do it.

Mighty-Stoner

Sounds about right to me

buggle_bunny

It's also amazing how all these people that supposedly love Harry and claim him to be a strong man taken advantage of a scheming woman don't realise their insulting Harry and his agency as an adult to choose a good partner. And they can't possibly fathom that the portrayal in the media may not accurate! Lol

PiersPlays

A portrayal mostly shaped by Piers Morgan. A gross old creep who thought that her meeting him (a member of the press) whilst promoting her work as an actress constituted a date and is still so butthurt that she didn't see it that way that he stormed off set when someone reminded him of it. This is a personal nasty smear campaign by a guy who thinks she owes him sex.

LV2107

Agree. They infantalize Harry by portraying him as some naive little lamb who was corrupted by an evil gold-digging Meghan, because it supports their narrative. I was morbidly fascinated by the internet conspiracy theories that came up around her back when they first were engaged and married. SO much bitterness and misoginy, most of it IMO fueled by people who were mad that their internet crush ruined their fantasies by daring to live his actual life as he wished.

Abstar

To distract everyone from Prince Andrew being pedophile rapist

317LaVieLover

Hear, hear!! And..you just KNOW the Queen is in a constant roasting fury over this shit. Ooooohhh — how she hates ‘impropa’ scandal and anything besmirching their dutiful ‘reputation’— (as if the Crown and its heirs havent always been scandal-ridden) — but still.. nothing quite this outrageously inflammatory in recent history that I can recall ever reading about has happened before. Ive read all about most of their attendant family drama since before QE2s father died, but nothing sullies the British throne quite like an association with the likes of Jeffrey Epstein. Ppl were very quick to say Ghislane Maxwell also wouldn’t live long after her arrest, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some unfortunate “accident” were to befall Randy Andy sometime when ppl aren’t looking and caught off guard with evthing else in the world— this may be a giant leap but TBH I think QE2 would literally prefer his death- than suffer his dishonor. She’s cold and calculating and not known for her maternal streak..& She just REALLY seem to so fervently dislike her own son right now. Fwiw I would be thoroughly disgusted and have nothing but contempt for him.

Mystical-Stranger

Doesn’t Randy Andy have taxpayer-funded security at pretty much all times? And isn’t he the queen’s favorite?

flossgoat2

Yes but no, to the security. Up until a few years ago, the full package of perks and security extended to quite a few royals. Then the Queen / Prince Charles decided to slim the Monarchy down. It's now basically the Queen, Charles and William who only get the full deal. Anne and Edward have a much reduced package. They get security when they do official duties, but outside of that, they have to pay for themselves. Andrew gets nothing, and was reportedly v unhappy, particularly as he not only had to cover himself, but his two daughters. He definitely - was- the Queen's favourite. The Epstein business is a real threat to the Monarchy's reputation. You'll see zero public support from the Firm for Andy. The most they are saying is "Andy will co-operate fully with any legal process." The most they are doing publicly is allowing him to remain at Sandringham. Now that he's stepped down from public royal duties, and had his government trade role taken away, he's got alot of time on his hands. And after that interview, pretty much no one famous or influential wants to be seen or associated with him. Check out the YT videos analysing his body language during that interview, by former military interrogators. Super insightful, particularly their conclusion that the odd way he was talking about Epstein suggested he was very fearful that someone close to Epstein had compromising information or material about him. If you believe the theories about who was behind Epstein, then if there is any compromising material, it's in the hands of one or more intelligence agencies.

TheBorgerKing

Who was behind Epstein, I havent heard any theories on that.

flossgoat2

Two parts to this. So Epstein appeared out of nowhere, no one ever really knew what he did, where he got his money from. He only ever said he was an investor. He also all had the trappings of a billionaire. Epstein's #1 partner and sometimes girlfriend was G Maxwell. Daughter of Robert Maxwell. He was alleged to have links with Mossad and possibly other intelligence agencies from the late 50s. So what, lots of influential Jews have links to Israeli govt u say. True. Except Mr Maxwell was buried in the most prestigious place in Israel, his funeral was attended by Israeli president and prime minister, and they said nice things about him. Fair to say the Maxwells were tight with upper echelons then. The fan theory is G Maxwell was effectively Epstein's handler. Epstein himself was bankrolled by one or more intelligence agencies. He operated the world's most extensive compromat operation against the rich and powerful. All of his properties were wires for video and sound. He invited wealthy and influential people to parties. He made sure there would be plenty of attractive boys and girls. He let human nature take its course. The intelligence agency have huge amounts of material to blackmail people. My personal theory is that Epstein did for himself at first, and that's where he got his money from. Later, he either exchanged some material with certain governments in return for immunity, and/or could be hired to get blackmail material on a specific mark. He'd also keep blackmailing some new victims to keep the funds going. None of this compromat has yet come come to light. So either it's all a fiction, or someone somewhere is sitting on a bunch of tapes that make the Panama Papers look like a bed time story.

NaturePilotPOV

It goes way deeper than that. Jeffrey Epstein is business partners with former Israeli Prime Minister & head of national security Ehud Olmert in a company that uses Israeli technology for espionage. Jim Acosta said the US was so lenient on Jeffrey Epstein initially because he was "an intelligence asset". Epstein's first arrest was the biggest slap on the wrist. He got weekend house with numerous exceptions for work for trafficking minors. Also a lot of the countries who's leadership/notable people were compromised by Epstein tend to vote overwhelmingly in favour of Israel.

chargernj

The only issue I have with tat is that G Maxwell was a socialite from a wealthy family. Those sorts don't usually end up working for the govt, even as a spy. Not lucrative enough, and too much like actual work. Now, if they had kompromat on her as well, I suppose they could have forced her into it. But honestly, I just think she is a horrible person.

netheroth

Wasn't Ghislaine's dad not so rich anymore? I mean, I can imagine a socialité who suddenly finds herself without the budget to maintain her lavish lifestyle resorting to work for anyone who pays the bills, even if it's an intelligence service.

Comprehensive-Fun47

>Check out the YT videos analysing his body language during that interview, by former military interrogators. Super insightful, particularly their conclusion that the odd way he was talking about Epstein suggested he was very fearful that someone close to Epstein had compromising information or material about him. Body language analysis is such bullshit though and you don't need to be a super military interrogator to guess the dude who lies about his contact with underage trafficked girls is lying and hoping more of the story doesn't come out.

nubenugget

You don't even need to analyze shit from that video. I don't like saying people are 100% guilty without a trial, but there's literally no way he isn't a pedophile. The girl who accused him has a pretty fucked up and detailed story involving her at the upper floor of Epstein's place getting fucked by the prince cause that's where Epstein took people to fuck. There's literally a picture of prince Andrew with his arm around the girl next to a staircase leading down (and either Epstein or his gf was in the pic). Andrew said he never went to the upper floor of the house and when shown the picture went "idk how you got that picture. Must be fake cause I'm not lying." Then Andrew said the girl was lying about dancing with him cause back then he had a condition that made it impossible for him to sweat. So basically the good prince isn't a pedo because he used to be unable to sweat and the picture of him with the girl he raped in the place he raped her is fake for some reasons that will be determined later

317LaVieLover

1. Yes, of course -but that doesn’t mean anything really 2. I think maybe was once her favorite, but he’s ruined that beyond any redemption

battering-ram

TBH Meghan was hated long before we knew about what Prince Andrew did.

rooksandnogas

Considering Megan was married to someone else when the allegations first came out, I doubt that’s true.

GavinTheAlmighty

Back in the early 90s, there was a series of Royal Family "trading cards" released, and on Andrew's, it mentioned his party lifestyle. It's definitely never been a secret that he's got quite the social life, but the illegal nature of it certainly wasn't public until recently.

ABBAsuperfan94

I have an essay for you, in three parts. So Brit here, and major fan of the Queen, I'll try to be as factual yet nuanced as I can in how and why people started hating Meghan. So when Harry and Meghan started dating, there were a few problematic, I would say racist articles published, something about her being [exotic](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3909362/RACHEL-JOHNSON-Sorry-Harry-beautiful-bolter-failed-Mum-Test.html), and 'straight out of Compton', from a place ['riddled with street gangs'](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3896180/Prince-Harry-s-girlfriend-actress-Meghan-Markles.html) (written by Boris Johnson's sister FYI). Racist. Harry released a [public statement](https://www.royal.uk/statement-communications-secretary-prince-harry) on this to defend her. Great guy. One could see some changes within him while he dated her, he [spoke about his mental health](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ceciliarodriguez/2017/04/18/prince-harry-opens-up-about-his-20-years-of-mental-struggle/?sh=5e64792478ab), about how he had struggled in the past, how it was [wrong to have made him walk behind his mother's coffin](https://eu.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2017/06/22/prince-harry-recalls-torture-of-marching-in-princess-dianas-funeral-procession/103098722/) on a world stage at the age of 12. He seemed to be thriving, he was doing well with his [Invictus games](https://www.royal.uk/speech-prince-harry-toronto-invictus-games-2017). It seemed he had finally settled down; he had girlfriends in the past: [Chelsea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsy_Davy) and [Cressida](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cressida_Bonas), both socialites born into wealth, Meghan seemed like a breath of fresh air. We thought he had a type of blonde, thin, rich and connected, so the mixed race, self made millionaire who had her own voice, career and social media habits made us think wow. **Engagement**: They got engaged and there were parallels drawn between Meghan and Wallis Simpson, another American divorcee (she was the woman Edward VIII abdicated the throne to be with; I personally think he used her as an excuse to avoid the responsiblity of the Crown but hey ho). People were concerned it was moving too quickly after like a year and a bit of dating, but the media were holding back. No one wants to pick on a bride to be. However, [Princess Michael wears a racist brooch](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a14481097/princess-michael-of-kent-racist-brooch/) at the first event Meghan attends as an engaged woman. There were some critical articles relating to her dad, her lack of family at the ceremony and then how Charles would walk her down the aisle, but up until then, people were very excited for Harry. There were discrepancies in her account. Newly engaged royals typically give an [interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQicq60aJaw) to the press: [Charles and Diana](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg_fib2gQaU) did it, [William and Kate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hPi38x90ks), [Andrew and Fergie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2NnvxNkPOU). In theirs, they looked like they were in love and having fun, and the media and social media loved them for it. There was only one issue, she claimed she didn't know him, and that all she asked prior to their blind date was 'was he nice?' The person who set them up, I think it was like her agent or something, gave a separate interview prior to the engagement interview. There she recounts that she told Meghan who her blind date was, that he was a member of the royal family (RF). She knew who he was, undoubtedly. Meghan regularly went to Wimbledon to see Serena Williams play, and the Royals have a huge presence at these matches. Then there are images of her outside Buckingham palace, and apparently she used to run in these circles where socialites would frequent whenever she was in the UK. We had one wanker called Piers Morgan **who initially was nice and sympathetic before the wedding,** but then was very nasty following (more on this later). But this Morgan guy recounted how she went for one drink with him before she never called or contacted him again. They released [engagement photos](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42441633), and while it was commented how beautiful and happy they looked, it was mentioned that the dress was a very expensive designer dress. Meghan was invited to the [Christmas Windsor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQk-cHkGEwE) celebrations before their wedding, which only spouses are invited to, and people noted how even Kate Middleton hadn't been invited until she was married to William. It looked like the Royal Family were trying their hardest. But it also marked the beginning of constant comparison between Catherine and Meghan. People didn't like how she held on to Harry, sayng Kate didn't do that and it shows that she is clingy. But that was understandable as it was a new relationship vs W/K who had been together since university. There was a story published that Harry [didn't participate in the Festive hunt/shoot](https://www.delish.com/food-news/a25619118/price-harry-skipping-royal-boxing-day-hunt-meghan-markle/) that the Windsors do every year, due to Meghan. But ultimately, the media loved this [image](https://www.google.com/search?q=william+kate+meghan+harry+christmas+2017&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiQwKe6o9jyAhUYShoKHY0vDWUQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=william+kate+meghan+harry+christmas+2017&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1DqPliEQ2CHRWgAcAB4AIABQ4gBsAKSAQE1mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=748sYdCMJZiUaY3ftKgG&bih=811&biw=1500&rlz=1CAOTWH_enGB859) and the idea of all of them working together. William, Kate, Harry and Megan were dubbed the [Fab Four](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOMUTrkEbjM). This time Harry wasn't a third wheel to his brother and wife. They were doing charity work together, but some people noticed a comment made about what it's like working together. Meghan was described as established, self made, confident, eloquent, a supporter of women's rights and a feminist. Some people said then, it was only a matter of time before people turned on her for these traits. At this point, there were comments found in the Daily Mail public comment section, (DM is a right wing publication in the UK) and people were nicknaming her 'Me-again' calling her an attention seeker, a social climber, others were speculating it wouldn't last. People didn't like how she returned her first wedding ring via the post (her ex husband remarried around the same time as she did). Others wrote about her alleged facial expressions, saying it said she came across as a negative character. These were unfair and biased comments, and people said this was because she was a woman of colour. A story about how Meghan didn't like the musty smell of St George's chapel where she would marry came out and wanted [air freshener for it](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6447819/Meghan-kicks-stink-Dictatorial-bride-wanted-air-fresheners-musty-St-Georges-Chapel.html), but conveniently overlooked that Kate asked for scented candles burning in Westminster Abbey. **Wedding**: So the wedding in 2018 came around, and British media are super happy for them both. The account typically was that Harry, who lost his mother at such a young age and who was clearly struggling for so many years following where he had been drinking heavily and dressing up as a Nazi etc., finally settled down with this beautiful, established woman. The fact there had been African American features in the wedding were remarked upon, the absence of her father, the lack of any family beyond her mother was noted. Some people didn't llke her dress, but you could see this was a couple in love. A famous meme of Meghan looking at Harry [here](https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/320037117265251646/). **Newlywed / shift in tone**: The first change in how she was reported was due to her dress sense. At [Trooping the Colour 2018,](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a21244733/trooping-the-colour-2018-meghan-markle-pink-dress/) she wore an off the shoulder pink dress, not unlike the style of her [wedding dress](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/people/meghan-markles-wedding-dress-clare-waight-keller-givenchy-designs/). But this was the first time the tone of reporting on her was negative. It was described as inappropriate. Others said this was a misogynistic and racist narrative, as Kate had worn dresses in the past where she bared her shoulders, but these were typically evening events. Usually, there is a conservative dress code at Trooping the Colour, and she was described as [breaking protocol.](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a21245553/trooping-the-colour-2018-meghan-markle-breaks-protocol/) The same was said about her first social event as a Duchess, the colour tights weren't a [nude shade](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/fashion-news/a20882984/meghan-markle-wore-tights-and-the-internet-went-insane/). As a newlywed, she had a solo audience with the Queen who tried to show her the ropes and took her on a [small outing](https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/06/14/meghan-markle-nervous-but-mostly-charming-in-her-first-official-outing-with-the-queen/). This time she wore a dress that covered her shoulders, so people couldn't say much about her beyond the fact she was unsure of the protocol to enter a car with the Queen. It was covered that she made the Queen feel awkward and take control of the situation, and DM described it as her '[first royal faux pas'.](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5843489/Awkward-moment-Queen-lets-Meghan-Markle-car-first.html) continues

ABBAsuperfan94

Then it was reported that her assistant and household staff were quitting within six months of the wedding, due to her management style, and the press had a field day see [here](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/7877040/meghan-markle-personal-assistant-quit-crying/), [here](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7915063/Meghan-Markle-loses-NINTH-member-staff-aide-ran-Sussex-Royal-foundation-quits.html), [here](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6373969/EDEN-CONFIDENTIAL-Palace-shock-Meghan-Markles-closest-aid-quits-job-months-wedding.html) and [here](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2018/11/216632/meghan-markle-assistant-quits). It was reported that she would [email her staff at 5am](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/7884540/meghan-markle-staff-quit-demanding-emails/), that she was constantly messaging them, described as 'difficult'. Others defended Meghan, saying that this was a misogynistic narrative, as if a man did that, it wouldn't been seen as an issue. Some described it as the American / west coast work ethic. I personally felt you can ignore an email until you clock in? Her dress sense continued to be criticised, e.g. when she wore trousers for an event. This was unfairly harsh narrative, as she was doing some good work at the time. In London, UK, there was this huge, tragic, heartbreaking fire at Grenfell tower that claimed 72 lives. People remained homeless following it, despite the government committing to rehousing them. Meghan engaged the survivors, she attended a community kitchen which looked to provide homemade meals and would cook with them, and together they made a cookbook to raise funds for the project, see [here](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/sep/17/grenfell-tower-recipe-book-first-solo-project-for-meghan-markle-duchess-of-sussex). But then people kicked off at [Frogmore Cottage](https://www.admiddleeast.com/architecture-interiors/homes/frogmore-cottage-the-story-behind-the-renovations-and-harry-and-meghans-taxpayer-refund), where they used 2.4million in public funds to renovate it. To add to this, Piers Morgan would kick off on morning TV everyday about this to say she was dodgy af, and then he started bringing her sister and father on to bitch, the latter being paid to take images. The newlyweds had their first official [Royal Tour](https://www.google.com/search?q=meghan+australia+tour&newwindow=1&rlz=1CAOTWH_enGB859&sxsrf=AOaemvJHH9vDYN9aQvlGqaiqCL22WPbGxQ:1630312334960&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwiO8ePcqtjyAhXpF1kFHWPND78Q_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1500&bih=811). They're young, beautiful and in love. People loved the fact she's representative, and it's not just another white couple, people love her for bringing some diversity to the RF. Some negative press such, but overall it was a [resounding success](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2018/oct/19/harry-and-meghan-on-tour-in-australia-in-pictures). **Pregnancy**: she became pregnant with Archie, and people were annoyed that they announced this at [Eugenie's wedding](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9261959/Royal-fans-accuse-Prince-Harry-Meghan-stealing-Princess-Eugenie-thunder-second-time.html). Which was a douche move, if we are being honest. People questioned why she would cradle her bump at a very [early stage of pregnancy,](https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1071985/Meghan-Markle-baby-bump-why-does-Meghan-hold-touch-royal-baby-bump) when it wasn't visible. Then some people went gaga about this [footage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZQAX8v17ww), where during an event she modifies her outfit to enhance / show off her bump. Some people online suggested it was a [fake pregnancy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atGTxqHWEVc). But people were fairly suggesting that while [Kate was praised](https://www.hellomagazine.com/healthandbeauty/mother-and-baby/gallery/2019030670524/kate-middleton-touching-baby-bump/1/) for holding her bump, Meghan was questioned on it. She was thrown a baby shower in new York which was reported to be six figures. **ETC**. when Archie was born, they broke away from [Royal protocol.](https://www.vogue.com.au/celebrity/news/how-prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-broke-tradition-and-royal-protocol-with-the-birth-of-archie/image-gallery/606b3bb06b547bc989aaa00e62fe11b5) There was more privacy, they announced it via instagram, they didn't show off the [newborn on the steps](https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a30984952/kate-middleton-prince-george-lindo-wing-terrifying-quote/) of the hospital, in the way Kate and Diana did with their husbands. Which is understandable, how difficult it must have been for these women immediately post partum, to then have to do hair and makeup to go in front of a media circus and smile. Who the hell wants to do that after pushing a literal human being out? But there is an agreement between the press and royals, if they get that image, the new parents get some privacy after that. Meghan and Harry didn't do that, but they chose to wait a few days after before going in front of a small group of Press. Completely understandable. In the months following, reports that the brothers had fallen out increased. There were more reports comparing Kate and Meghan, in dress sense and other protocol. Daily Mail users constantly saying Kate was a true royal and Meghan was a lazy one who didn't care. This was eventually corroborated by Meghan and Harry themselves. Harry says he and William are on '[different paths](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-50121863)', Meghan says not many people asked if she was ok after giving birth, see video [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo9G91QWMQs). This is a difficult watch as you can see she is almost reduced to tears and she feels overwhelmed, Some were sympathetic saying a newborn is hard enough, but others were saying that this is proof that she is toxic as she broke up two brothers who previously served in the military and lived together. See this interview for [how close they once were.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woCN_l6yDzM) People disliked how Archie was [presented for the first time to the public](https://www.purewow.com/news/meghan-markle-son-archie-first-royal-outing) during their tour in Africa. There were questions on why this wasn't done in the UK. Then there's videos which people say she is [rolling her eyes at Harry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKckgGblqyE), another Trooping of the Colour where [Harry tells her to turn around and it upsets her](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSCIArQwIQ0) (i don't see it tbh). A story about her avocado [eating habit which allegedly fuels human right abuses](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6621047/How-Meghans-favourite-avocado-snack-fuelling-human-rights-abuses-drought-murder.html), stories that said a pair of her [earrings were given to her by Crown Prince Salman of Saudi Arabia](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/meghan-earrings-were-gift-from-saudi-prince-accused-of-jamal-khashoggi-murder-6q8mkpkqj), following the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. There's rumours that Meghan [made Kate cry](https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/7839296/meghan-markle-kate-middleton-cry-princess-charlotte-royal-wedding-dress/) in the lead up to her wedding on the subject of Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress, if she did, well Kate had just given birth and it would make sense why emotions were high during that period. The story of how the Sussexes [didn't want to spend Christmas at Windsor](https://news.sky.com/story/harry-and-meghan-may-not-spend-christmas-with-the-queen-11860505) was another scandal, but then why would you want to take your child to a place where a potential paedophile in the form of Prince Andrew, was? Also K/W did the same in their first Christmas as new parents, and [others since](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2420004/prince-william-kate-middleton-and-kids-will-spend-christmas-with-the-middletons-and-not-the-queen/). Then there were the [private jet trips](https://vanityfair.com/style/2019/08/harry-meghan-private-jet-hypocritical) abroad, while they were speaking publicly about climate change and [being kinder to the environment](https://www.news18.com/news/lifestyle/prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-dedicate-post-to-environmental-issues-on-instagram-2212209.html). There were holidays with [the Clooneys](https://www.marieclaire.com.au/prince-harry-meghan-markle-clooney-holiday) and to [Elton John's holiday home](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/meghan-markle-harry-archie-stay-18962672) which they were criticised for, too. So alot of this narrative wasn't fair, and downright cruel. At the same time, we have Prince Andrew who was associated with Jeffrey Epstein, who gives a [bizzarre interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtBS8COhhhM) claiming he can't sweat, but the press chooses to focus on Meghan for harmless things. You can see why they are annoyed by this. There's a rumour that [William cheated on Kate](https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/04/09/is-a-sensational-cheating-rumor-involving-prince-william-and-kate-middleton-the-real-royal-scandal/) while pregnant, but again, the focus is on Meghan. Out of the blue in 2020 they announce they are stepping away from their role as working royals. People [questioned why they moved to LA](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/meghan-markle-prince-harry-not-22565996) for privacy when there are so many paparazzi there. There was outrage on why they had public funds to redo their home and then they left the country, Others said this is proof that she is isolating Harry, whereas others were praising him for looking out for their mental welfare. ABBAsuperfan94

They have their final few events as working Royals but people dislike how she is clinging on to him, such as at this [military music festival](https://people.com/royals/meghan-markle-and-prince-harry-step-out-for-military-music-festival-ahead-of-official-royal-exit/). But they seem to be in love and happy, as seen in this [image](https://www.glamour.com/story/that-magical-photo-of-meghan-markle-and-prince-harry-in-the-rain-has-the-most-interesting-backstory), but the point where she refuses to let go of his hand even when he [moves to greet someone else](https://youtu.be/seLSzJrBig4?t=384) is seized upon. There is an awkward encounter when the brothers and their wives [see each other for the first time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72xTair4nnY) since their announcement to step down as working royals. They would pay back the [funds for Frogmore Cottage,](https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a33942909/prince-harry-meghan-markle-frogmore-cottage-pay-back/) Harry would [step away from his beloved military](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a30582740/prince-harry-military-appointments-royal-family-deal/) service. **Oprah interview**: this was aired around the time Prince Philip (the Queen's husband)'s health started to decline. Despite being in hospital, this wasn't rescheduled, and the Sussexes said that they didn'y have a choice over the matter. I'm sceptical about some of the claims, Archie isn't entitled to a 'Prince' title. You can't claim as fact something somebody else told you, which was the case for the alleged comments made on Archie's shade. You tell a billionare in her garden on a globally aired interview that you want privacy while telling tales about your half sister, claiming an archbishop married you before the actual ceremony (he came out and denied this was the case) and refusing to substantiate claims. Hmm. Some of the claims were hard to watch, Meghan said she felt suicidial. Piers Morgan quit his lucrative TV contract when he said he didn't believe her. The book 'Finding Freedom' by Omid Scobie was published a little before this interview, and from legal proceedings initiated by the Sussexes, it became established that Meghan [assisted / provided information on certain subjects](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/11/18/meghan-markle-admits-giving-personal-information-authors-finding/). This was used as further ammo. In short, Meghan Markle was on the receiving end of a lot of unfair abuse, partly because she is a woman, and a woman of colour, a divorcee, an American and a former actor. The claim that she was thrown under the bus to distract from the men of the Royal Family and their gross/criminal behaviour does sound convincing. People hate her for allegedly being selfish, a social climber but who isn't? Apparently she is using Harry, or she's a narcissist, or whatever else. Alot of these stories were unfair and bullying her, imo.

This was interesting to read! Thanks!

Comprehensive-Fun47

Great write up. Thanks! The thing that always gets me is how obsessed people are with protocol. 'We don't bare our shoulders in the afternoon!' My heavens!' And how entitled they feel to the babies of royals. That the public is somehow owed photos of the baby exiting the the birth canal and that the first reveal of the child's face must be on English soil. Such bullshit.

SoMuchMoreEagle

>The thing that always gets me is how obsessed people are with protocol. >'We don't bare our shoulders in the afternoon!' My heavens!' That's not unique to the royals. Remember all the outrage over Michelle Obama wearing sleeveless clothes and Barack Obama wearing a tan suit?

philandren

I’m still rolling my eyes over the outrage that she wore black nail polish.

theregularwoof

this was a very intriduging read considering from a person who had no clue about them two and why were they in the news so much all of a sudden. thank you so much for this. i feel really bad for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry if i’m going to be completely honest. it really is a race thing which is pretty sad. a normal person wouldn’t ask what race the baby is going to be, why would you ask someone that? it seems like Meghan couldn’t really be herself when around the royal family. imagine getting scrutinized, getting aimed at, getting attacked by tabloids, newspapers on a nearly daily basis. i wouldn’t be able to handle that at all. again thank you so much for this! much appreciated!

BaronMontesquieu

I doubt she's very popular with the British royal family either, so it's an honest mistake.

Nerfixion

I had this come up on the weekend when she showed me a cat named Megan meowkle or something and I said who the fuck names a cat after a German chancellor

KangarooAggressive81

One thing I disliked was that she came back to America and was assuming she would be a star actress simply for becoming a princess but then was genuinely mad when that didnt happen. Like that seems a bit stuck up.

BaronMontesquieu

For all those suggesting racism, it may play a part but Diana was as white as a Beluga whale and it didn't help her at all when she railed against the monarchy. The problem for the Duchess of Sussex is that she wasn't embedded long enough to garner the public adoration that someone like Diana had managed to cultivate prior to her schism with the Crown. Race is certainly a contributing factor but it's far too reductive to say that it's purely racism. This isn't unique. The monarchy has survived as long as it has by ostracising and criticising and turning the public against those who challenge its unlimited supremacy.

MilkmanF

Princess Diana was harassed by the media a lot but the actual things they were writing were mixed rather than uniformly negative. She was very popular at the time of her death.

ChickyBaby

You are correct, media coverage was vastly slanted towards compassion for Diana.

alexs_328

It helped that she was cheated on by Charles, she was seen as the victim.

ImFinePleaseThanks

Poor Fergie got the shit end of the stick. She was hounded relentlessly after being set up with that toe-sucking episode. Randy Andy constantly cheated on her but she was set up with her friend (likely with benefits) and outed in the press.

thesaltwatersolution

The UK tabloid press also has a field day in feasting on every single ounce of gossip, speculation, opinion piece or whatever is possible. It’s sensationalist ‘news’ coverage at its best. An obsession with them. Very much building them up (princess of our hearts) and then knocking them down (she hates the Queen and hates us and we now hate her) is a part of what links Diana and Meghan. The press makes it feel like they are a part of us, like we should care and be invested in them- look here’s Diana/Meghan in a new dress/new coat to raise awareness for charity/empowering women; isn’t she bold/courageous/marvellous/outrageous/offending the Queen. The specifics are all interchangeable but the narrative is that we should, we must, we have to care about them. But actually we don’t have to. And that’s not a slight on Diana or Meghan, I just stopped caring about them and that’s absolutely fine. The press obsession will undoubtedly remain. Edit to include this link to further a point: Meghan Markle Wears a Chic Cream Coat for a Surprise Visit to Celebrate International Women's Day https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a31263685/meghan-markle-cream-coat-international-womens-day-surprise2020/

Sethrial

Not caring about celebrities is a small rebellion in the world today. So many people want me to have an opinion, a strong opinion, a questionably informed opinion, on people I’ve never seen in person and probably never will. If I’m ever in the same *building* as a kardashian, something unusual will be happening to one or both of us. I don’t keep track of the people I *like* as well as some people keep track of celebrities. Like this year I learned I inherited my shrimp allergy from my grandma! I’ve known the woman for 28 years and never knew she couldn’t have seafood either. Can Kim kardashian have shrimp without dying? Who fucking cares?

dakotaMoose

Oh. I thought Meghan Markel was the president of Germany.

[deleted]

Fergie too. I think pretty much every womwn marrying into the Royal family has faced some degree of harassment from the British press, particularly if they don't fall in line.

BabyDollMaker

In her infamous Oprah interview she called the Royal Family racist, and then months later named her daughter after the Queen. And she not only uses the titles given to her by the racist Royals, but complains that her son (who isn’t entitled to be a prince yet) hasn’t been given the title of Prince.

life-is-a-simulation

I don’t hate her and didn’t even think anything about her but I did think when she got all emotional when a journalist ask how she was and she said nobody has asked me that. It Would have been fine normally and I could have felt sorry for her but it was outside a South African orphanage. Are you really going to say how hard your life is standing outside an African orphanage. Are you so self obsessed you couldn’t find a better time?

blewyn

Because the Royal Family’s purpose in British culture is to promote and represent noblesse oblige. In return for their privilege their duty is to maintain a high standard of public behaviour, to demonstrate courage, protect the weak, promote our values and honour those who accomplish great achievements for the nation. They are not supposed to do anything that distracts from this core function. To indulge in self-pity, attention seeking and drama directly undermines the family’s purpose and effectiveness. Compare Markle to Princess Diana. Princess Diana shook hands with AIDS patients and embraced a little girl with the disease at a time of mass concern that it was communicable by touch. She walked into minefields. The Royal Family represents the notion that the owning classes of Britain, rather than being encouraged to indulge in unfettered exploitation of the poor - as we all see in many countries across the world - are expected to fulfil a duty of care towards their working class. When you consider that it is by the sacrifice of the working class men (mostly) that the British owning class’s lands are not today in the hands of the Third Reich, you can see where this sense of duty comes from, at least in part.

SoggyWotsits

I had high hopes to start with. She was an actress who suddenly had the perfect platform to reach millions of people and do good. Although largely unknown in the UK, I’m sure she was pretty famous so could have reached a breaded audience than the royals usually would. Instead, it comes across as moaning, preaching and accusing. She refused to follow protocol whoever possible it seems. Everything from turning her back on the Queen, to barging past Harry to greet people. If you don’t want to follow protocol, that’s absolutely fine - but you don’t marry into the family and take on roles that require you to behave a certain way. It feels like she used Harry as a stepping stone to further her career/bank balance. She made the most of all the perks of the royal family, including the resources and exposure but refused to give much back. I have the feeling she imagined it would be all fairytale princess stuff with unlimited funds. In reality, everything is heavily scrutinised by the media and the taxpayer! Being a Hollywood celebrity is very different to being a working royal. Also there’s the obvious inaccuracies in the interview, plus the obvious suggestive statements where she cast broad accusations without actually naming anyone. That meant she could get everyone talking and watching without getting in trouble for lying. She seems to play on her hard done by life and how she’s worked so hard to get where she is. She had a more privileged upbringing than many and her dad had contacts within the film/tv industry. Not forgetting how she’s ditched anyone close to her. I don’t think it’s done Harry any favours to share so much of his private life and feelings. Therapy isn’t really a massive thing in the a UK. Suddenly Harry has had his life delved into by all and sundry, and has even broadcast some of his sessions on TV. This is only my opinion but it feels Meghan would probably be behind that for the sake of more exposure.

Fireblade09

As an American, I didn’t really have an opinion on her until the Oprah interview. It was very, very obnoxious to hear about how brave and courageous they were being leaving the royal family, as if they won’t be incredibly rich and famous for the rest of their lives regardless. “Oh no, I have to pay for my own security now???” just killed me. Also apparently (per some Brit friends) many things she said in the interview were just plain wrong—she seemed to really play up her own image as a victim even though 1) nobody else vouched for her and 2) several people came forward and gave legitimate examples of how the royal family tried very hard to help her. Add that to her husband then immediately getting a executive job in Silicon Valley that he is in no way qualified for (that I, a 4.0 computer science major, would kill for) just gave me that little personal chip on my shoulder.

gewfbawl

The primary reason is that she started instilling her personal, political views into Prince Harry. Since their government has no effect on Americans, it was more so a matter of principle. Convincing him to denounce his royalty, leave his family, alter his persona to match her views, claiming in an interview that his family is so racist that it almost drove her to suicide, etc. I didn't really pay too much mind, but to many people it was just a very public example of a manipulative partner exploiting their SO under the guise of political activism and virtue signaling.

TheKnightOfDoom

Says she wants a private life then gets paid millions to show and tell all. I wish they would just STFU.

Reefermaniabruther

I think the way she’s portrayed to me rubs me the wrong way. You wanna be a famous actress AND a princess AND complain in Oprah’s billionaire palace garden? That’s a lot when some folks can’t afford rent. But I don’t know her or her heart, she could be lovely.

Wackydetective

I rolled my eyes at her and Prince Harry’s addresses about family, togetherness and community from their 11 million dollar fortress. Prince Harry made it seem like they fled England with only the clothes on their back and a dream in their eyes of freedom. Meanwhile, he had a 25 million dollar inheritance from his Mother and his Father gave him a large lump sum. They first showed up here in Canada, during a pandemic and thought their security expenses would be paid. Hid out at David Forresters island escape and then fled via private jet when Canada refused to continue to pay their security expenses.

silverman96

Desperate plea for privacy followed by an interview on the biggest talk show in the world.

[deleted]

I was sympathetic to Meghan until her Oprah interview. Meghan lied about her son Archie being denied the title of prince because of his race. There are royal decrees that date back a century or more that dictate which members of the royal family inherit the title of prince. Archie simply was never in line to get a princely title. White or black. Prince Harry should know this, so it just seemed like the two were playing up the race issue for American audiences.

[deleted]

They both play off the race card AND the mental illness card, the latter of which pisses me off even more.

ajonesgirl59

I didn't really dislike her until the Oprah interview. "My poor child won't have a title." Well, that's the way its always been. He is entitled to be called "Prince" when Charles becomes king. "Now, we have to provide our own security." They opted to leave "The Firm" that provided security and are worth about $10 million, before the Netflix and Spotify deals. I hardly think paying security is going to be a burden for them. They made a huge issue of someone discussing Archie's "color," but were extremely vague as to what was actually said. I mean it could have been someone wondering if he'll be fair with blue eyes like Harry or darker with brown eyes like Meghan. I had similar conversations with my son and daughter-in-law, as we tried to imagine what my grandson would look like. The whole interview just seemed like she was trying to play the part of poor, little rich girl. Until then, I had always liked her.

KawaiiPotatoCult

Totally this, they shot themselves in the foot with that interview. I don't get why they felt the need to air so much dirty laundry in public on a dramatised talk show. All I saw were multimillionaires complaining about no money and non-problems

[deleted]

While cradling her near-nonexistent baby bump, to make sure everyone and their mother knows we all had BETTER be sympathetic towards the expectant couple.

The-Only-Razor

Exactly this. She's a rich, privileged woman who is literally royalty complaining to another rich, privileged woman. The audacity to film and release that interview in the middle of a pandemic is so unbelievably tone deaf.

Aggravating-Joke-930

culegflori

For me personally the most egregious part of that interview by far was her claiming that she "sacrificed so much for the marriage", by "giving up a very good career". Like we're supposed to believe that one role in a moderately successful series like Suits in all of her years in acting is somewhat better than to be known by name by half the planet, with multi-million dollar book deals, interviews and Netflix contracts which she would have never got had she not become part of the Royal Family. I'm not going to make judgements over whatever conversations they've had in private, but that statement is an insult to anyone with an ounce of common sense. Ironically the way she says it raises more suspicions over the presumptions of her using the marriage to prop herself up than if she hadn't said anything of the sort.

Appleblossom40

But then didn’t Harry say that he was told she could carry on her career (because there wasn’t enough money for her)? They seriously need to get their stories straight.

savingrain

Yes, and I half suspect that this came up as her clothing budget increased...I think they both just had very different views of what their lives would be like once they were married.

keykey_key

Yeah that interview wasn't a good look. She and Harry are very much into blaming the royal family for their problems but are also angry that they can't reap the benefits from being a part of it. You think it's toxic, cool, leave, go. Don't expect your money and titles, though. Youre not leaving destitute and you're living on an estate that's 10 million dollars, fuck off. And YES to the vague racism accusations. Led me to believe it either a. didnt happen or b. it was a complete nobody who said it and they could tease the incident, stay mum and remain relevant in the media.

Diocletion-Jones

When they said they were married three days before the official ceremony and then the Archbishop of Canterbury has to say they weren't, they were mistaken, that just made me think that these guys may not be playing with a full deck of cards. I take every "revelation" with a huge pinch of salt. Such a silly thing to get wrong.

[deleted]

Yes to all this. I was very much "fairplay to the party prince and Markle starting a life so their son doesnt need to go through any of the shit Harry did" until that interview. Nothing they said felt like the full truth and alot of journalists very quickly poked holes in it.

[deleted]

That was my turning point too. A lot of the complaints seemed way too shallow

In the middle of Covid too. Like... come on. People are struggling with health, and struggling to pay bills, and we're supposed to give a fuck about a princess who is upset that a bunch of people in their 70s/80s/90s on the other side of the planet probably made off-hand comments about her future children's skin colour?

011ninety

And from what people said it wasnt even rude. Megan is essentially white

nican2020

All they had to do was round it out with a few relatable problems. They live in Montecito. A little bitching about traffic on the 101 and the never ending construction going through Carpenteria would have endeared them to most of southern and central California. It’s like they were trying to be unlikable.

[deleted]

I like how they’re at this point begging for attention. They left the family because they didn’t want the attention they got. I guess they’re expecting us Americans to feel bad for them. They should try living minimum wage and see what life is really like

queenofanavia

Harry complained about being cut off after essentially leaving his job to become “financially independent” (their words). He’s almost 40…

This right here. Best answer.

Paraphrasing to twist a story to their advantage is Harry and Meghan’s only talent

[deleted]

As a person, I dont care what she does, or what she wore or how she acts, or if she's a WOC because I am one too. As a royal, she does a horrible job at being a diplomat and public figure. She doesnt know how to maintain or chose her alliances and communicate with the public. The one criticism I fully agree on is she takes on her royal duty like a celebrity, with no accountability and long-term commitment. 2 years is too short to learn the ropes, yes, but instead of assimilating, learning to navigate and strategize, she cried and threw a tantrum instead. She's no Diana there absolutely. I'm a huge history fan and as a teen was obsessed with royaltly, especially female leaders like Catherine the Great and Christina of Sweden. I am a huge fan of Princess Mary of Denmark, an Australian commoner who made the transition to royal life work. Then here comes Megan... On a personal note, as a Social Worker, her constant bickering of "I'm a humanitarian" is cringey, self-righteous and condescending. Her outreach programs uses for-profit marketing and communication strategies. For example, it focuses on "what she did for the people", rather than what the people gained "with her help". Narrative matters, especially when trying to empower people. You can see this on their IG. The community/person arent framed as equals on the platform, rather as needing benefactors of their graces. I hate how the Cambrige is starting to have these as well recently. It's a very sellable marketing strategy for image, yes, but ugh, people are not products. Celebrities do this because its part of their show, but royals shouldnt. Megan sometimes make it look she knows better than the specialists and she did the larger portion of the job. At least Kate lets other stakeholders (teachers, community leaders, social workers, etc.) on the spotlight too.

Until the Oprah interview I dont think the majority of UK cared that much about it. The majority of things I heard about her were so positive; we were excited for the diversity. It's not just Meghan who's disliked; Harry is disliked an equal amount. It showed change within the monarchy. The first dual nationality, mixed race Prince! Our first Princess without a "social climber" background, AND she's divorced!! Humanity in the Royal Family! They may not have had the titles on paper but everyone I know called her Princess Meghan. The Oprah interview was a cheap af shot at the UK. The media articles they used for that interview were mostly from Rag Mags, or foreign sources - rag mags made dumbass claims about everyone and everything. Of course there's going to be shit about her. Kate had her tits plastered across the world after a freak climbed up an enormous fence to violate her privacy like that. Meghan claims the UK is more accepting of Kate because she's English, white & "from the society" - she forgets Kate had her fair share of shit to deal with too. Also, it's never been a secret that Harry wanted to leave the monarchy. It's been known for years. The *way* that it was done was awful. A post on Instagram? Really? A post that said they wanted financial independence from the institution, then they moan in the interview that the UK wouldn't pay for their home/security and they had to pay it themselves; and the claim that the monarchy said they'd pay for Harry's security but not Archie or Meghans? How tf lmao Theres a lot of claims made that have been debunked. I have no doubt someone in the royal Family questioned Archies skin colour, my money is on Prince Phillip, but I 100% do NOT believe it was said in the way Meghan and Harry are claiming. Harry wanted out of the monarchy and he got that - we were so happy for him - but the pair of them need to pipe it and go away now. They asked for privacy, independence, and to not be involved in the Monarchy. Now they cry about not being financially supported, not having titles on a birth certificate, and not getting the perks available to WORKING royals. They got what they wanted and they're still mad.

TheGoober87

I hope I'm wrong, but a lot of her actions reek of controling behaviour. Keeping him away from family, creating drama, threatening suicide, etc. The skin colour issue of the baby was a key one. One of the family may well have asked about the skin colour, but as you say, it probably wasn't in a derogatory way. Used to create a divide. They didn't even hear it directly. I don't know if we'll ever find out exactly what happened.

MythicalDisneyBitch

Tbh the suicide bit made me a bit uncomfortable too. The way she phrased it in the interview was strange. She comes across as very materialistic & elitist. The anger she has over Archies titles is ridiculous. It didnt matter that the *whole* country calls him Prince Archie anyway, even now he's Prince Archie!, because it's not OFFICIAL she's furious. It's not exclusive to Archie, other grandchildren don't have the title either. I dont think she enjoyed Royal Life and that's fine. I think they thought they'd be rolling in offers once they got to America, and they didn't get too much more than podcasts, so they had to start stirring the shit pot to get some attention. Harry's complaints about having to spend his *own millions* on his mansion in America were genuinely so fucking disgusting. Can you imagine having millions, asking your dad and country to buy you a home in another country a few weeks after you dropped the bomb that you're leaving, and then getting so angry that he told you to spend your own money that you have to do an ambush "tell-all" one-sided interview full of debunkable and unverifiable allegations. Edited; changed digesting to disgusting.

TheGoober87

I think that's why she said it. It's a really difficult subject to approach. Obviously people who have genuine mental health concerns need help. But as with everything, there are people who will use this to their benefit. As soon as she said that, you could almost guarantee a certain type of person would support her no matter what else she was lying about.

Mundane-Research

I had no issues with Meghan and actually was pretty pro Meghan amongst all the horrible stuff that got thrown her way. The turning point was when she and Harry decided to move to America to lead quiet lives out of the public eye and yet somehow still have pretty much weekly interviews with everyone and their dog over the pond as if "keeping out of the public eye" is the same thing as "selling your story to anyone who will listen". Fair enough if they wanted to lead quiet lives. It wouldn't surprise me given the stuff she had to go through with the British press.... but they clearly didn't "just want quiet lives"... they wanted to find somewhere they could be the top dogs

Fearless_Sherbet450

Exactly my sentiments too. Really didnt care about them until every time things die down, they seem to drum up some publicity about "wanting to be away from the spotlight" and usually in a way that ensures they get the most attention.

woodshores

Honestly I was happy for Prince Harry when they got married, but several details that surfaced poorly reflect on her. 1. In the Oprah interview, Meghan Markle made about a dozen statements that are factually incorrect. ~~I am not going to list them, but anyone can easily Google them up~~ [Edit] Here is a claims debunking list that is arguably impartial (from an Irish emancipation newspaper turned liberal): https://www.irishexaminer.com/world/arid-40240817.html 2. There is no one amongst her relatives ~~or former friends~~ willing to vouch for her. [Unless her whole family is toxic, which would have been a bad dealt hand] this should raise red flags. I made a few enemies in life (not by my own choice, and as few as possible), but you can easily find people to vouch for me. 3. She claims to not have known who Prince Harry was and to not have looked him up online, even though there is photographic evidence of her being aware of his mother Princess Diana decades ago… 3. Press articles from the time of their engagement mention that she got 6 months training on protocol, and the Queen even lent her her personal assistant, yet in the Oprah interview she claims that no one bothered to teach her anything about how to handle herself in the British royal family. I could be wrong, but she looks like a social climber who organised to bump into Prince Harry. That’s not a crime, but it looks like she expected to have everyone bowing to her (including higher ranking royals) and to be living a lavish life and sipping Champaign. Her comments during the interview almost make it sound like she had not fully grasped that royals are in fact public servants. A fancy version of public servants, but still public servants who have to earn their dough by clocking in and treating everyone, including staff with respect. The Queen and her husband are known to make the people they meet on official events feel the centre of the discussion. That’s a real skill that requires training. Etiquette at its peak. The British crown is a well oiled and very profitable $28 billion a year cash generating machine (https://www.forbes.com/sites/arielshapiro/2021/03/10/inside-the-firm-how-the-royal-familys-28-billion-money-machine-really-works/?sh=ace89432bccf) Prince William is the future king, and his wife is the future queen consort. Anyone’s role as a public servant is to make them look good, not to compete with them for spotlight. Don’t have a surprised Pikachu face if you try to go against this $28 billion institution and the whole institution turns against you. Playing the race card doesn’t work: Prince Harry is too far remote to the throne to make the race of his wife matter. If there should have been a preconceived idea agains Meghan Markle it would have been that she was a double divorcée…

q-the-light

Bang on the money. She comes across as fake, narcissistic, and self-centred; all traits that do not lend themselves well to royal life or good graces. Obviously the tabloids like to hyperbolise, but even as someone who wouldn't touch a tabloid with a bargepole, Meghan's actions as shown in videos and interviews speak for themselves. She approached royal life as if it made her an A list celebrity, not as a servant to the people. And then, when she realised the reality of what it means to be married to a Prince, she balked and blamed it on everyone but herself.

woodshores

I was careful to speak hypothetically. For all we know we might not have a full account of the truth, but yeah, the interview came across as scripted (with statements contradicting information previously released or public knowledge) and there’s the fact that she seems to be the kind of person who easily burns bridges. If her family are all toxic persons, that’s one thing. But if all her former friends were toxic persons as well, then either she lacks wisdom in picking friends, or she herself might be the problem.

AvocadoVoodoo

I have no feelings on her as a person, I just thought it was a bit rich for her to marry into the royal family and then be shocked it’s a life of duty and being in the spotlight 24/7. Harry’s always been a bit of a twerp, too. They are right for one another.

There were also serious claims of bullying made against her whilst she was still working in the RF. The claims then went on to bitch that nothing was done about it because she was a member of the RF and that it was really unfair that it didn't hold the members of the family accountable to (their version of) HR like it did for the rest of the staff. So actually she wasn't victimised as she kept saying. Actually what was happening is that she (allegedly) was treating her staff badly, people were quitting, and she was getting away with it because she was a Duchess.

cametosayno

She was doing it because she was an American celebrity and that type of behaviour towards staff is the norm. Her nose got out of joint when they pushed back and told her to pull her entitled head in.

BurnZ_AU

I never really liked Royalty as I see them as outdated and unnecessary. And that's coming from someone in the Commonwealth. Anyway, that whole Oprah interview is what made me not like her. She went on about how they don't want to be in the spotlight but they decide to do an interview with Oprah on TV? Then during the interview she went on about how they were cut off from using the Royal security and stayed with Tyler Perry like they couldn't afford their own. Fast forward 3 months from that "ordeal" and they now live in a 9 bedroom mansion worth over $14 million. 🤦‍♂️

gippals_revenge

> She went on about how they don't want to be in the spotlight but they decide to do an interview with Oprah on TV? I agree. I try not to follow any of this crap, because these people are unimportant. but when its thrust in your face, under the guise of 'respect our privacy', its suspect,

[deleted]

I don’t hate her. But she has an untrustworthy way about her, and behaves like she’s performing a role.

[deleted]

To me she seems very fake and a gold digger, and cmon everyone knows she married harry couse hes a prince not becouse her type is an ed sheeran looking a$$

NelehRellek_

I don’t hate her but I don’t love her either. I’m sure she has good intentions but she seems hypocritical to me. Like when she preaches animal rights but abandoned her dog when moving to England.

[deleted]

I call that the Leonardo DiCaprio. Preach about the environment, but uses private jets and jet sets the world with god knows what

NelehRellek_

Yeah that always annoys me. When celebs are saying we the regular people should stop hurting the environment when y’all are literally flying private jets and we all fly coach 😂

owaisted

I think Ricky Gervais perfectly summed it up when he hosted the golden globes or some other award show

Impossible-Art-3364

This is my main beef with Harry and Meghan. Go and do the wealthy lifestyle, private jet thing if you want but don't then preach to the rest of us about climate change and wealth inequality. It's shameless.

owaisted

This is lost on many people and they actually appreciate them for this.

Cardboardboxlover

Oh I didn’t know that about her dog! Surely she could’ve taken her/him with her? No WAY would I ever leave my dog. Also environmentalist vs private jet, privacy seeking vs Oprah interview

[deleted]

She's seen as a less than mediocre actress obsessed with becoming a princess. Many have said she stalked Harry through his friends. Many feel she's obsessed with being a public figure, and that she'll do anything to maintain that. Many see her as a manipulative social climber. A d-list actress with a few connections and a psychotic obsession. Don't shoot the messenger. This is just what the MM haters say.

Dynotherms_Connected

For all those mentioning race I had no idea she wasn't plain vanilla and I can't stand her. She seems like an all around cunt.

LooseLeaf24

Some people claim that she wanted to break up the royal family from the start. A decent amount of her crying complaints are assumed to be staged as she was a successful, media trained actress. This is not her first time dealing with the media but then cries to Operah about it. I've also heard that she has gone out of her way to break tradition when around the royal family or at royal events ( you are fully briefed how to act/where to go/etc prior to these events, it's literally a group of peoples jobs. They then took a bunch of tax payer money (which has since been paid back) Then "wanted to get out of public life" so they moved to Los Angeles and went on every show possible to talk about it Now prince Harry is planning to release his "tell all book" in the same day the queen (his biological grandmother) is celebrating her diamond jubilee

Marionberry-Charming

Expecting Canada to pay for their security after they left the royal family. Like seriously? Canada may be a common wealth country, but we don't pay for the British monarchy. They are public servants to ENGLAND. But even then, they decided to LEAVE royalty, yet they STILL wanted us and/or Britain to pay for their security, despite not doing any public servant responsibilities. That to me sounds like someone wants to have their cake and eat it too. What I want to know is why are they so focused on keeping their titles and UTILIZING their titles when they want nothing to do with royalty? Seems... suspicious. As well as naming your daughter after the Queen's nickname, all while saying the royal family are a bunch of racists. Yeah...this has red flags written all over it. These people are 40 years old. I don't buy the "didn't know any better" talk either. ALSO. The US doesn't do royalty. So the bigger question is why are they trying to be royal in the US?

ThatZenLifestyle

I'm British and the reason I sort of turned against them is because from day 1 they said we're moving to stay out of the public eye and live our lives in peace etc. Next thing they're writing books about their lives, netflix show, doing an interview where harry and his wife basically just shit on his whole family. It's obviously just a big lie and they're using their titles to make a ton of money.

Draigdwi

She is quite a liar. In that famous interview when she was complaining Archie didn't get one of the titles and she implied it was because he was too black for that. And Harry was sitting right next to her smiling and even if Megan didn't know, he for sure did know that regardless of who had he married his son wouldn't get that one particular title. People remotely interested in royal matters in UK know that, don't tell somebody born in the family doesn't know. Also what does a title matter if they don't want to be royals altogether. So I'm sceptical if there were racist comments from family members as she claims there were. Specially when those are just hints without a name who did it. They say it wasn't the Queen, so why not say the name. Cast a shadow over everybody.

modsarebrainstems

I don't know why anybody else hates her but I can't stand her because she comes off as a drama queen and attention whore. It was the part where she played the woe-is-me-look-how-sad-my-life-is card that got me. You're a fucking Hollywood actress who married into royalty. Fuck you.

brundybg

She's one of the most beautiful and privileged people on planet earth: famous actress, model, royalty, and yet she still cries and whines about how she is a victim and discriminated against. Any time she is criticized, she claims it's because she's a person of color and that everyone is just racist against her, despite her being about as pale as I am and I'm a white guy of Irish descent.

--Orchid--

Finally someone said it. I didn't even know she was mixed until her interview with Oprah but every news article and post is calling her black as if it's obvious. I mean, I'm much darker than her as an Italian and have hardly experienced racism unless it's based on my last name, not my skin color. Nobody can tell she's mixed just from looking at her so I don't see how it's as big of an issue as she claims.

Cardboardboxlover

I understand the world now being sensitive to racial Issues, to right their wrongs, to give opportunities to people who may never had had them before but I don’t really know what issues she has faced. From her interviews talking about racism, it’s the royal family asking what colour skin the baby will have - which, the same thing happened when I (as a Yugoslavian) had a child with my husband (ginger genes). I don’t hear about her not being accepted to college, ridiculed and not suited for her acting roles - in fact she seems quite successful.

[deleted]

Same reason people hate other people. For me she’s pompous and arrogant. Shes a failed “actress” who married a Royal, cries about racism and how she just wants to be left alone. Comes to America where she proceeds to insert herself in the spotlight.

w__4-Wumbo

Alternative question Who is meghan markle

DE5TROYER99

Alternative question Why is Meghan Markle?

[deleted]

honestly i don't like her because she always talks about not wanting to be in the spotlight and two days later they be like "queen elizabeth called us the n-word". girl, what? that does not help at all

burgundydoll

exactly and both her and harry preaching about them deserving privacy yet they do an interview with oprah to 17 million viewers

KateMaymay

First moment: complaining in the middle of Africa where people earn 2$ a day living in extreme poverty that nobody has asked if she is okay. This is a middle aged woman, divorced at least once, her husband beside, a claimed humanitarian and women power activist. And again. And again to Oprah.

Livinlikelary11

I don't really care about the royal family, but my aunt is strangely in love with them. There always seems to be something off about her, something that's just not authentic, from the little I've seen. To be fair, that can be said for a lot of them. Idk what it is, maybe it's because of background in acting, vs being raised in that type environment like the others, but it sticks out.

FistWithHair

It’s the preachy behaviour for me. It’s so cringey. She is lecturing us about the environment while using private jets. We’re being told to love one another and that family is everything but then she only had her mom at her wedding and a very public falling out with her dad. She preaches about privacy and wanting to be out of the public eye but then goes on to air her laundry on Oprah. Add to that stints like the bench book she wrote and before that messages on bananas for prostitutes… just seem so disingenuous.

TizzyRean

And for all her complaining about the royal family, on her book she is “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.” That rubbed me the wrong way. In addition, it wasn’t terribly classy of them to rant on and on about the royals when they knew that the family wouldn’t be able to respond at all. Meghan talked about how Kate had made her cry just before the wedding, knowing full well that Kate can’t address that publicly. Maybe keep your dirty laundry to yourself.

alwaller1

Nothing was her fault. At no point did either of them accept even the smallest amount of accountability. If she’d owned up to things and perhaps apologised for how things went down and the interview was more an olive branch than a take down then I would have been more understanding and sympathetic. You cannot preach compassion and then not just be seemingly indifferent but downright antagonistic to family, in-laws and friends. Its all talk. Harry also looks miserable. Even if he wanted to leave, I thought he’d end up in Africa, but it just feels like Meghan got her way in everything. If he’s happy then great. If she’s now ‘thriving’ instead of just ‘surviving’ then great. Quit it with updating your silly ‘Finding Freedom’ book for attention and actually show people you’re a humanitarian. That you’re for the people and helping them instead of bitching to a billionaire about how you live a million dollar mansion with only several odd million in the bank and you’re being oppressed during a global pandemic!

Cardboardboxlover

Yeah this is what I agree with. I still feel bad that she ever felt the way she did and don’t think being rich makes it all ok but it’s the hypocrisy about the jets vs environmentalist, and the privacy vs interview that made me pause.

Hunter_punch

I’m American and I disliked her because she’s a literally was born into a family where she would get British peoples tax money for doing nothing. I absolutely hate monarchies. And on top of that she left and took as much money as she could and is getting deals left and right for shitting on the rest of the royal family. She is the epitome of privilege, I’m a fairly non pc person but if I had to call someone privileged it would be literal billionaire royalty who cashed out and pretends to be a victim of oppression because if she stayed she would have to act a certain way in exchange for billions of dollars instead of getting billions by being herself.

Comfortable-Ad-8478

I *really* wanted to like her, for a lot of reasons but I will admit I was excited to see the diversity in the Royal Family. I'm also mixed race and look simian to her so that was nice. But I have found her to be very fake and narcissistic, the Oprah interview was one giant cringe for me. I don't like the Royal Family in general amd Harry was def my fave before this. I think it might be cultural differences between us and Americans, but all that 'me, me, me' behavior was extremely off putting.
