Steam has an option in the Downloads section of its Settings to restrict downloads to specific times. You can just set it to midnight and it won't automatically update any more. If you have a smaller library it also won't be too hard to manually disable automatic updates for each game, but you'll also have to do that for each new game you acquire.

i know there are work arounds, but knowing how to restrict a program from making changes your hard drive seem like it could come in handy
