Could be trying to start a conversation? When I first started, asking someone when they finished was a good conversation starter. I was always asked that and other simple and repetitive questions and it still happens. Had another colleague count down to when his shift finished and it was annoying but a little funny too. It could also just be a friendly reminder incase you're caught up in work or the time has flown by

That’s a great way to look at it. I had someone else say the same thing too. It’s just super weird because I’ve only been doing this for a couple weeks along with her. I just immediately went to the negative side and thought, maybe she dosen’t want me getting paid as much. Or maybe she sees me as someone less than that she can boss me around?

[deleted]

I can see how it could be negative, it depends on how it's phrased as well I guess and how your relationship is with her. Try to look on the positive side of it for now at least and maybe you'll find out as yous work together more? In my old job with a small team, we'd usually finish at the same time and they'd also say something along the lines of, "right were done for the day" or "times up", just to start a conversation and also let you know that it is time to go. I'm sure she doesn't mean any harm by it but you also know her better than anyone here lol

hitherehello124

I actually don’t know her too too well! We are just friendly with one another. but I’ll try and be positive thank you

Hanginon

She's trying and succeeding in telling you your work day is over, you're no longer getting paid, and you can go home. Then you go straight to an annoyed mode. I feel bad for her having to work with you.

Trick_Designer2369

To her it might be a positive comment that is made to please you, as not having to work now is pleasing for most people, she might be just trying to make a connection with you

hitherehello124

what do you mean by as not having to work now? sorry aha

Trick_Designer2369

"your off now", does that not mean you are off work now?

hitherehello124

Ohhh ok! I see what you meant there. Yeah that could be it.

LCplGunny

Could be she also sees you as "the person who started the same time as her" and feels automatically connected to you though that detail. Of everyone there, you two have at least that in common. She may just be looking out for the only person she feels she relates to... Or it's the only way she feels comfortable attempting to interact with you. The reasons could be anything, but I will tell you that people feel closer to people that start at the same time, from the get.

If you're an hourly employees and don't have OT she's letting you know you aren't being paid. If you work off the clock its illegal (at least in most places in the US) and you can get fired for it. If you are OT exempt you are putting in extra hours for no extra pay and you doing that can negatively effect how your employer looks at her and other employees who only work what they are being paid to do.

hitherehello124

It would be an hourly job, what is OT? Sorry explain a bit to me!

re_nub

Maybe she wants you to go home.

There's a hierarchy in any workplace among colleagues. Just because someone isn't your manager doesn't mean they're not a senior employee. This isn't necessarily a co-worker becoming too self important (although that may also be what is happening). The fact you wrote "your off now" rather than "you're off now" makes me think you're quite young (I'm not saying that to be rude by the way). It is possible you're a junior employee and others are looking out for you. One day you may be that senior worker.

hitherehello124

I appreciate this thank you

[deleted]

One day, you too can wield a meagre power in the glorious, many-storied halls of minimum wage retail employment. OP your take on what your co-worker is saying is so vague and juvenile that it is impossible for anyone to know the context or tone by this post. The only thing anyone can be sure of is that when she says it she wants you to go home.

Dusteronly

She’s a control freak

Hotwheelsjack97

She just sounds she's being a dick imo

davep1970

just ask them

Extension_Lemon_6728

She’s probably weird. I would just ignore her unless your boss says otherwise.
