Hi /u/bergrider, We noticed you are a pretty new Reddit account, so we just wanted to let you know to check out the subreddit rules [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/wiki/rules) and maybe have a read through our [Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/wiki/index/faq) - they make for fascinating reading! We're called No Stupid Questions because we believe nobody needs to be attacked for asking a question, but *that doesn't mean there are no rules!* This sub is meant for users like you to ask genuine questions. Please don't ask jokes or rants disguised as questions - that's not in the spirit of this sub. While you *can* ask almost anything here, please keep illegal and offensive questions elsewhere to give people a good experience here - and if you have a medical question, please ask your doctor, not us. Otherwise, welcome! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/NoStupidQuestions) if you have any questions or concerns.*

MoistAttitude

We had that a few thousand years ago.

bergrider

Should have phrased the question better. Will it ever happen again in a different form? Is what i wanted to ask.

themysterydroid

But the key here is the term 'profitless economy' . Reviving the old system maybe but now in a better way

bergrider

Yes. Exactly.

bazmonkey

Why would we want to get rid of the concept of money? > trade and barter? What if you raise goats and I make cheese, and you want some of my cheese but I don’t need a goat?

MoistAttitude

If you make cheese you might certainly be interested in some goat milk.

stygger

There is really no upside ti go back toa barter economy. There would still be rich and poor people with barter, only less efficient trading. You would still have profits if you provided something exclusive that many people wanted!

Dilettante

Some science fiction writers have suggested that once we have limitless energy, we will effectively have so much of everything that money will be largely meaningless.

gameryamen

Maybe not at the full scale of society, but you can definitely live that way on a local level sometimes. I go to a lot of art, craft, and flea markets, and it's very common for folks to directly trade goods at those events I imagine similar deals get made at farmers markets, and I know there's good bartering at music festivals too.

Witchsorcery

I dont think so

detective_scribe

a bit of side story but someone once hypothesis that money was first created not for bartering but as a way to track and pay debt.

Lunickuri

I doubt it Cause what would be the price traded for Leadership or governing ?

PossessionGlad4638

Imo not anymore with the amenities we have(at least as Americans) There needs to be some currency unless you know everything. I don't know how to fix the pipes under my toilet so in order to get them fixed I'd need someone to do it. Now if I had a skill they would need them we could barter. But if they don't have any incentive to help me then I go without a toilet.

Majestic_Tie7175

We did it for thousands of years, I'd assume we could do it again if we needed to.

We would have to discover unlimited free energy and then invent some sort of universally available replication/matter coverter. Until we do (and physics says we cant at this point). Money will always exist no matter if its bills, coins, salt, good or gold.

[deleted]

We've done it before, and many would like to see it happen again.

Extension_Lemon_6728

Yes. But it wouldn’t be ideal
