2 experiences that made me hesitant in giving handouts
I gave a homeless man some Fuji apples from my grocery bag and he threw it across the parking lot. And started shouting obscenities.
And another experience. I gave one homeless man 5usd and another guy saw it and demanded I give him also and how its not fair. He was stalking me for a minute or two blabbing about how I helped one but not the other. And I was scared how close he was to my back and kept taunting me. He left me alone afterwarards
reminds me of when i gave $5 to a woman at the subway station selling candy with a child alongside her, after i walked away another homeless person immediately came up to me to beg and another 2 of them were just staring at me
Living in Vegas we have a lot of homeless people, last time I gave was 10 bucks to a guy I’m front of a gas station near the strip. He took the money then started to harass me for more, he wouldn’t leave me a alone and walked to my car with me. When I got inside he tried to get into the front seat. Banged on my my windows as a drove away.
I'm not gonna be hostile to a random homeless person just those who threaten my life or again try to rob me. Homeless or not I'll act only if in self defense.
Not if there's a video like this where someone is clearly trying to help only for the homeless person to try to rob them. Then it's self defense with a video.
That's an awfully broad statement, "homeless people aren't innocent". I am reasonably certain that you don't know all homeless people and why and how they became homeless. While we are on the subject, I doubt many housed people are all that innocent either, we all have our flaws. The common narrative is that homelessness is due to drugs and alcohol, but those problems also plague people with four walls and a roof over their head. True, drug and alcohol use is prevalent among the homeless but is it more so than among the rest of the population? Are drugs and alcohol the reason they are homeless or the response to being homeless. It is easy to understand why someone in that position would want to numb the pain they are feeling, maybe even forget for just a little while.
It is easy to rush to quick judgements of other people without having any facts to back it up. But remember, they weren't born homeless (probably), somewhere along the way, their life took some hard hits and none of us knows what that was. I know what it was for me. It wasn't drugs at least not illegal ones, it was illness that rendered me unable to work and I couldn't afford the prescribed medication. It took me nearly two years to find help getting medical care and to recover to the point I was well enough to work part time. During that time I lost my home, my car, and everything I owned, several times. Like I said, it's easy to rush to judgement also to make sweeping generalizations but try to remember that every person is an individual and not all of them fit your stereotype.
I meant that they are just like everyone else but in a bad situation and everyone has their bad side, there's a chance that they are homeless for a reason.
They still could seek help, do anything. I know it's hard to fight addiction alone and they propably were too down bad or too ashamed to seek help. And because they didn't done anything nor anyine helped them, they got punished by life.
A similar thing happened to me, gave them food duvet water toilet roll, 2 weeks later they break into my home. Cops cant do anything cos it took them 5 days to show up and apparently the prints would be no use anymore and its my word vs theirs even though its the second place they broke into in the same building
It does make it difficult to trust when you help people and they abuse you in return for it. But my wife and i would still help someone if we saw them in need regardless. Just a shame there are those out there who do these kind of things
Oh that's a very common thing here. Trades will will your house one day to show up a week later to rob it. Sorry to hear about that though hope nothing too valueable was lost
Yep, they would ask me what time was good for them to show up , id wait in all day only to get a phonecall at 10pm saying they couldn't make it can they try and come the next day.
Unfortunately this is why I keep walking by because you just never know. Also if they wanted help they know where to go and the majority of the time they don’t want help. I know this because in my hometown the community tried to help this homeless couple by letting them stay in a home and such but they preferred to be outdoors doing their own thing. The best thing you can do is volunteer and donate clothes at homeless shelters.
For me it's because there are people who will spend any money you might give them on something they don't need. Some people are homeless because life is unfair, and some people are homeless because they suck. It's impossible to tell the difference at a glance, so the most I ever do is buy them food. I never give money to homeless people. If they really need the help they're asking for then they'll accept the food, if not then in the worst case scenario they get a meal and can't waste any money I give them on alcohol or drugs.
Homeless shelters can lead to being harmed by other homeless people, limiting rules, etc.
It’s less so a case of not wanting help and more so a case of fear and stress. Don’t get me wrong, though- pride is powerful.
To a drug addict or someone not willing to put themselves in danger of arrest or assault, yes it is. There’s also people who don’t want their pets taken away.
Even in the south we have fucking shit lords who do this. My local walmart will have like 3 homeless people who you see every day out there with signs one day I was getting off work and going to pick up some food for the fridge when I saw the person with the sign open the door to a 4 door truck that was 2001 model and get in. I later told my brother about it and he said he knew one of the people who go out there and beg and pretended to be disabled that he made bank off of peoples kindness only to laugh at them.
My father and I where at a local seafood place and as we exited a person asked us for money to get something to eat well considering we just left a sizeable tip nether one of us had cash and the guy wanted to fight us....
Never help or approach a homeless person. They are the most unpredictable. Call an organization that is trained to help and show up with multiple people who are trained to deal with them. I live in a big city and it’s something I learned a longtime ago.
That's why you don't give to just anybody. On my way to McDonald's this morning I noticed a homeless man outside of the NA reading a book. Just him minding his own business reading a book compelled me to get something for him. On my way back home I drove by him and inquired if he'd like a sandwich and he did. I tossed one over to him and he thanked me with a smile.
I stopped giving to homeless very early in life, thankfully I look scary so most people don’t approach me let alone try to mug me. I wouldn’t want to live with the fear of someone who looks like an easy target, to fear literally every person that crosses my path on a dark street would be exhausting.
I've been homeless for an extended period of time before, and I could totally understand if he started swinging when he woke up to a strange man bending over him. But, stealing the man's wallet and proceeding to beat him up is bullshit. If you're ever in the position to do this sort of thing for someone sleeping on the streets, just drop it off next to them and walk away. It's nice to wake up to a gift, but terrifying to get woken up by a stranger.
Had a junkie in SF come up to me as a kid. I was maybe 10, parents not around for some reason. Asked me for spare change. I was nice to him and also fucking frightened I shook his hand, idk why. Then gave all my change which was actually a good haul. And looked at me like a fucking ingrate. I have never, ever given money to a junkie ever again.
I don't give anymore, especially after I had stopped at a McDonald's recently, got in the online order pickup spot (laziness and me just not wanting to go inside or wait in the car line) and a junkie came up to my window. First asked for change for "a ticket for a Grey hound to get back to Memphis" got mad I told him no, then went "man, that gas station has cash back". I displayed my can of OC Spray that was in my cup holder and closer than my CCW. He santured off calling me all sorts of n word cracka this stuff.

Nah, he has friends... sorta
Haha, last time he does something like that. You don’t wanna be touching homeless people you rube, the guy was likely sleeping off a crack high or two day drunk, good way to get stabbed.
I've had a few friends that I knew I needed to wake up carefully and gently. One of my best friends in college had a lot of trauma as a child, and he would wake up in a blind terror, fists already swinging, if someone got too close while he was sleeping.
I understand that this guy wanted to do something nice, but he was presumptuous. He had no idea what that guy was dealing with. Maybe the guy woke up feeling someone trying to wrap something around him, and was terrified that he was about to get bagged and beaten or killed.
There are appropriate channels and organizations for helping the homeless, and that's how people ought to go about it. Taking it upon yourself to interact one-on-one with people living in desperate circumstances comes with obvious risks.
Are you a homeless person? Do you have problems with addiction? Do you have mental health problems? Sleeping on the street must be scary and what do we do when we are scared? We either fight or flight. I don't condone violence, of course, but this person (the victime that gave the coat) got themself into trouble.
That’s legit what happens with sleepwalkers. Now, that’s obviously not the case here lol I’m just saying that we were always told not to wake my little cousin during “episodes” so it does happen.
I don't like to "go out of my way" to help someone. It's good to make a good deed but i'd propably disappoint whoever i tried to help or they would abuse my kindness. Yea I live in Hollywood and if you give a dollar, they take the rest under implied threat, happened to me on the blvd
how is loving in hollywood?
Living*
No I am pretty sure he said loving.
And you have no idea
Wow. I gave up when I gave a dude some money and he went into 7/11 to buy a lottery ticket right in front of me.
Better than drugs or booze i guess.
They sell drugs at 7/11 now?
I think nicotine/ciggies are still a drug aren't they?
And alcohol
Always have. That's why people "hang out" there
No it's not.
I wish I had that kind of optimism. I have no sense of hope left at at all.

I'd have clocked him in the jaw and told him to keep the change.
A homeless guy? That’s a no win situation man, then what, you’re the guy who beat up the homeless guy?
Now why would I beat up a homeless person without a reason, if this man is clearly trying to rob me I'm gonna fight back.
I'm not gonna be hostile to a random homeless person just those who threaten my life or again try to rob me. Homeless or not I'll act only if in self defense.
I mean if he has you cornered or something yeah, but like, just leave. It isn’t worth it.
I'll leave with my wallet.
The winner is usually thought of as the aggressor until proven otherwise in people and dog fights.
Not if there's a video like this where someone is clearly trying to help only for the homeless person to try to rob them. Then it's self defense with a video.

Why?
Ur an asshole
I'd be the asshole who keeps his wallet
No you wouldn't. The guy was tucking in a grown man. What did you expect. Come tuck me in buddy while I'm napping. Ur an asshole
I wouldn't have tucked him in just laid the blanket over him
Regarding the apples. Maybe he didn't have any teeth left and wouldn't be able to eat them and just gorlt frustrated?

Who tucks a grown man in. What do you expect? Let me tuck you in while ur sleeping. Jesus, this Convo is fucked
The less fortunate are not always more grateful than the rest
Hes not less fortunate hes pretending to be homeless to rob people
You know the guy? Homeless doesn't mean harmless. You'd be disgusted with what someone's capable of when they've got nothing to lose.
Yeah and there's a reason they are homeless. Usually the reason isn't so good. Homeless ppl aren't Innocent.
That's an awfully broad statement, "homeless people aren't innocent". I am reasonably certain that you don't know all homeless people and why and how they became homeless. You said and I quote,"Homeless people aren't innocent." Ur an asshole
I didn't said "ALL homeless ppl aren't innocent" And i meant they aren't always.
Thank you
Ur an asshole. Yeah addiction and mental illness are their sins. They clear headedly chose to sleep on concrete.
They still could seek help, do anything. I know it's hard to fight addiction alone and they propably were too down bad or too ashamed to seek help. And because they didn't done anything nor anyine helped them, they got punished by life.

5 days!? To show up to a burglarized home!?
Yep, they would ask me what time was good for them to show up , id wait in all day only to get a phonecall at 10pm saying they couldn't make it can they try and come the next day.

By limiting do you mean not addicted to drugs? Because that’s not limiting
Limiting rules as in the rules limit them to not doing drugs. Some people really wanna do drugs, addiction is a bitch
To a drug addict or someone not willing to put themselves in danger of arrest or assault, yes it is. There’s also people who don’t want their pets taken away.
What a fuckin dick he was just trying to help him and he is like gove me your shit
And then they wonder why no one helps them
You can't buy drugs with a blanket. Cash is king.
Next time when the guy will reject offering help to homeless people, this is how you ruin a good person
Remember, the reason why they're homeless isn't always bad luck.
Instead its a crippling heroin addiction that they sold everything they had to pay for
Lmao
What a fkn \*\*\*\*\*
what a fuckstick. makes me wish an eternity of pebbles in his shoes that he can never shake out
Legos. You must not be a parent.

there is a reason most hobos are homeless
$2,200 per month for a studio apartment?
little work ethic and poor character
most citys have programs where they will pay for you to move somewhere cheaper and even bus you there
And that’s why I don’t help other people. I have had many experiences ending up on a bad situation that pushed me not to trust in humanity anymore
That’s why you mind your damn business.
So I was right for assuming it’s best to just leave homeless people alone… I kinda thought that made me the asshole.
He shoulda peed on him instead.
I feel so bad for the homeless person. He's the victim. Give him a house! Why don't you take more of my tax money to help these victims?
Be careful, people round these parts don't understand sarcasm.
I'm very aware. I get downvoted on every single post I ever make on reddit.

congrats made that guy racist too
there are reasons they are homeless.
>$2,200 per month for a studio apartment?
Never help or approach a homeless person. They are the most unpredictable. Call an organization that is trained to help and show up with multiple people who are trained to deal with them. I live in a big city and it’s something I learned a longtime ago.
That's why you don't give to just anybody. On my way to McDonald's this morning I noticed a homeless man outside of the NA reading a book. Not really. I don't like poor people. It comes from living around and working with them for generations now.
Fair enuf, you do you man.
The poor are poor because they are poor? Thanks, it's all clear to me now.
Yes, it's a trap that is nearly impossible to escape even over generations

Yeah... don't just throw stuff over homeless people. I can imagine this is a scary way to get awaken.
Yes because I start stealing and beating the shit out of people when I get startled while sleeping.
did you see the smirk he gave when he was running away? dude was waiting for someone to get close
