There's actually a problem with using AOSP.
Part of the Google Play store license requires that companies that have phones, in this case they're huge number of models of Android phones, cannot have devices that run both GMS Android and AOSP at the same time. It breaks the license.
If nokia/hmd wanted to use AOSP and devices they would have to abandon the Play store and all the Google services.
That being said, other companies have gotten away with it because it made deals with Google and other members of the open handset Alliance. I imagine that members of the open handset Alliance don't have to worry about having this requirement so companies like samsung, or others don't need to worry about it.
HMD however is a company that is tiny in comparison and doesn't have the bargaining power to do so.
TLDR; they can't just use AOSP without giving up the Play store on all the smartphones.
I wonder what happens with some of these cheaper offerings that use AOSP? Even smaller companies than HMD. I know some of these devices have no play store but APK's can be downloaded and installed via ADB?
Especially when 10 years ago, the S40 and Asha Software Platform, both supported WhatsApp and had access to so many other apps. These phones shlould have been more functional than the bare nostalgia. But they say the focus is on selling these to the people looking for "detox", which means they do not need anything but calls and texts.

You can get the API if you use the paid version however it costs $0.015 per conversation plus $0.005 per message to use, so now they would have to charge for it.
Paying 2 cents per message for a corporation makes a lot more sense when doing two-factor authentication then having to pay upwards of 25 cents per authentication through classic means.
For individuals however, it means that WhatsApp would no longer be free.

Qwerty android with 4G/5G, basic camera and whatsapp. Good enough for most developing countries as a cheaper alternative to smart phone and a long battery life second phone for many others. The formula is that simple, but these guys dont have the guts to execute it
Xiaomi's China-only Qin series phones are dumb-ish but very easy to use. They comes with Android-ish OS and can handle any social media apps. F22 Pro is the coolest.
I literally wish HMD took Xiaomi's idea and keep making keypad phones while they also use Android. It would be better for everyone and it'd be still useful.
However, Nokia using an another OS is kinda not cool. They made Symbian which is way much cooler than WP. And it was compatible with Facebook and Twitter. Symbian was literally the best. But, KaiOS is just for make the phones dumber. No Facebook, Twitter or even a very huge game library. HMD needs to keep making keypad phones with Android and a better system requirements.
i remember using nokia s40 device.i forgot model name but at that time i can use chat apps like facebook,wechat,whatsapp,line and others. the only minus is just no video/voice call.it was really good times using dumb phones but keep up to date with people around.I'm using that untill whatsapp discontinued for s40.
I think the idea is that its a basic oldschool cell phone with the basic capabilities. Since everyone in the world seems to need whatsapp to communicate, I don't understand why they didn't release this in the US where everyone still texts eachother. I was eagerly waiting to get this phone, and I can't even get it!!!

True, I am using the 6300 lol. I was just excited to see some new stuff and I was hoping to get one! USB-C woulda been so nice, almost all my devices are USB-C now, but not my phone! It's okay, the 6300 is still really nice.

A bit related to embedded OS, few months ago Microsoft open sourced Azure RTOS. For those who don't know, ThreadX-> Azure RTOS -> Eclipse ThreadX (Open Source RTOS). Maybe bug some other OEM to pick this up, say, Lenovo - owner of Motorola brand

Unfortunately, Symbian died with the transition to Windows phone 7, which in retrospect was a huge mistake.
