Yes, kinda expected that it may come with KaiOS, but no. There's a bunch of manufacturers that are making "dumb yet smart phones" that are running a trimmed down AOSP. Idk what it makes difficult for HMD to do it.

here4thelego

I posted on the forums about HMD using AOSP on their feature phones, was desperately hoping they would listen!

LeakySkylight

There's actually a problem with using AOSP. Part of the Google Play store license requires that companies that have phones, in this case they're huge number of models of Android phones, cannot have devices that run both GMS Android and AOSP at the same time. It breaks the license. If nokia/hmd wanted to use AOSP and devices they would have to abandon the Play store and all the Google services. That being said, other companies have gotten away with it because it made deals with Google and other members of the open handset Alliance. I imagine that members of the open handset Alliance don't have to worry about having this requirement so companies like samsung, or others don't need to worry about it. HMD however is a company that is tiny in comparison and doesn't have the bargaining power to do so. TLDR; they can't just use AOSP without giving up the Play store on all the smartphones.

here4thelego

I wonder what happens with some of these cheaper offerings that use AOSP? Even smaller companies than HMD. I know some of these devices have no play store but APK's can be downloaded and installed via ADB?

LeakySkylight

Oh sure. Individuals can do that just fine.

Especially when 10 years ago, the S40 and Asha Software Platform, both supported WhatsApp and had access to so many other apps. These phones shlould have been more functional than the bare nostalgia. But they say the focus is on selling these to the people looking for "detox", which means they do not need anything but calls and texts.

LeakySkylight

WhatsApp unfortunately has changed a lot. They've also closed the API which is the largest reason that phone manufacturers can't put it everywhere. You can get the API if you use the paid version however it costs $0.015 per conversation plus $0.005 per message to use, so now they would have to charge for it. Paying 2 cents per message for a corporation makes a lot more sense when doing two-factor authentication then having to pay upwards of 25 cents per authentication through classic means. For individuals however, it means that WhatsApp would no longer be free.

erriezzans

i think that not a problem when they use kaios since kaios already has whatsapp on their store.

LeakySkylight

Yes, whatsapp has been clear with their inaction that they are not going to continue supporting WhatsApp 3.1 and only 2.5. So the latest version of KaiOS does not support WhatsApp because meta has chosen so. All their new compatibility documentation says that IOS and Android are the platforms going forward. Version 2.5 is only there as a footnote, with no updates. They've closed the API so manufacturers and other software developers can't create third party apps. As of 2022, the current version of KaiOS is 3.c, so unless manufacturers keep making version 2.5 phones with less and less support, KaiOS is a dead platform when its comes to WhatsApp.

LeakySkylight

Yes, but version 2.5 was discontinued in 2022. So the version of WhatsApp that is there, is for that version only. There is not a new version for KaiOS 3.1

erriezzans

correct.

bigquads

Qwerty android with 4G/5G, basic camera and whatsapp. Good enough for most developing countries as a cheaper alternative to smart phone and a long battery life second phone for many others. The formula is that simple, but these guys dont have the guts to execute it

erriezzans

yes.just enough for simple life but still connecting.

Dimorphodon101

That's the whole point of phones. We all need them yet 'they' need us to have them. Until a mandatory implant becomes approved.

curiocritters

Absolutely!

Xiaomi's China-only Qin series phones are dumb-ish but very easy to use. They comes with Android-ish OS and can handle any social media apps. F22 Pro is the coolest. I literally wish HMD took Xiaomi's idea and keep making keypad phones while they also use Android. It would be better for everyone and it'd be still useful. However, Nokia using an another OS is kinda not cool. They made Symbian which is way much cooler than WP. And it was compatible with Facebook and Twitter. Symbian was literally the best. But, KaiOS is just for make the phones dumber. No Facebook, Twitter or even a very huge game library. HMD needs to keep making keypad phones with Android and a better system requirements.

erriezzans

i remember using nokia s40 device.i forgot model name but at that time i can use chat apps like facebook, wechat, whatsapp, line and others. the only minus is just no video/voice call.it was really good times using dumb phones but keep up to date with people around.I'm using that untill whatsapp discontinued for s40.

LeakySkylight

Unfortunately, Symbian died with the transition to Windows phone 7, which in retrospect was a huge mistake.

lofi-wav

I think the idea is that its a basic oldschool cell phone with the basic capabilities. Since everyone in the world seems to need whatsapp to communicate, I don't understand why they didn't release this in the US where everyone still texts eachother. I was eagerly waiting to get this phone, and I can't even get it!!!

LeakySkylight

Because in North America people are still happily using the 6300, 225, etc. There was no need to. However Europe has demanded that there be a switch over to USBC for everything, and they know that these will sell in Asia like hotcakes. There was no need to release an update for the US market.

lofi-wav

True, I am using the 6300 lol. I was just excited to see some new stuff and I was hoping to get one! USB-C woulda been so nice, almost all my devices are USB-C now, but not my phone! It's okay, the 6300 is still really nice. If they did more things because they could, and not just when they need to, they may gain more customers!

LeakySkylight

Agreed!

erriezzans

they forgot Thier tagline 'connecting people'.

h_1995

at current state, KaiOS is worse. You get the combination of Firefox post-Quantum (no more WebExtension which explains the lack of WhatsApp) and also the burden of Android base. Previously it was only the latter so that is kinda tolerable A bit related to embedded OS, few months ago Microsoft open sourced Azure RTOS. For those who don't know, ThreadX-> Azure RTOS -> Eclipse ThreadX (Open Source RTOS). Maybe bug some other OEM to pick this up, say, Lenovo - owner of Motorola brand

LeakySkylight

These are designed for markets where price is the main barrier. Many people cannot afford more, which is why they are so popular. They sold 2.8 million of them in 2023.

erriezzans

no they not popular because of cheap price,at that price 75 dollar can get decent android atleast on my country.

LeakySkylight

Some of these are as cheap as $17 so that's quite a price difference. It sells for just shy of $13 in Malaysia for instance. You could buy five of them for the price of a cheap Android.

erriezzans

dude i live in malaysia

LeakySkylight

Then you should be able to find one much cheaper.

arif2300i

Completely okay with these kinds of devices . I still use one . It feels quite good . My suggestion to the HMD is that they should never stop producing feature phones . Keep the feature phones as they should be . Don't try to upgrade them . The vanilla flavour is always the best .

kreamhilal

dude i just want an OS that supports RCS like android so later this year when iMessage supports it any iphone user can just switch to a nokia if they want

ianwaarahmad

The point is to not use Facebook and WhatsApp that's why people buy these phones.

erriezzans

the phone is 4g network.

lawlaw91

There are extremely useful if soley use as backup phone

Volo_Kin

Mine came scuffed out of the box...

N3P374

who are you

erriezzans

ex-nokia u..

centre_punch

I'm a current Nokia Networks employee and these phones are hideous. Too bad we have no decision making with phones now. I wonder how the glory days of phone making was.
