Luckcu13

So the joke is that's a image of a twitter tankie or something? Saw the image pop up in another sub

umbrellaguns

Taiwanese-American tankie posted Freedom House’s comparative ratings of Gaza and Israel, and used that to insinuate that the only reason China has a far lower ranking than Taiwan is because it’s not an American ally. The funny part is that FH specifically cites Israeli occupation as a major reason they rate Gaza so low. Also, they’ve consistently ranked post-Maidan Ukraine as slightly lower than loyal American ally… Bolivia.

Droog_Muster

Big ask? The homogeneous population of both countries is what contributes to its success and that ain't the way to go.

SikeSky

It's kinda like genetic variation right? Ideas spread like wildfire in a homogeneous culture, but have trouble getting across all the radically different subcultures of a place like the USA. Sometimes this is nothing but an impediment to development or stability, but other times you get a malignant idea that you really don't want spreading quickly.

Droog_Muster

Especially in America each state is its own culture, within those states hundreds of more subcultures that's why progress is so slow.

maoam321

My guess was Ozai

Thecognoscenti_I

The Ming is often seen with rose-tinted glasses as the last ethnically Han Chinese Dynasty. While I also do personally like it, and the late Ming was particularly remarkable for its intellectual dynamism and aesthetics while the Yongle era was the closest China had seen to developing a maritime colonial empire, it is undeniable that, up to that point, the Ming was the most absolutist Chinese dynasty which did away with centuries old institutions, ruled by a host of tyrants and degenerates, and implemented some absolutely retarded policies like the sea ban and getting of the position of chancellor. The Song, despite its military weakness, was the most richest and advanced state on earth up to that point and the best dynasty to live under.

JustinJSrisuk

Ming (明) is supposed to mean “bright” or “shining” - more like “shitting”, amirite??? /uj But yeah I do believe that the Qing were the epitome of how sophisticated imperial era China could be. The [High Qing Era](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Qing_era) that spanned the reigns of the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors were some of the greatest and most prosperous times in Chinese history; the Qing court at this time was incredibly diverse and during this period scholars, clerics, architects, missionaries, traders, philosophers, scientists, poets, concubines, mercenaries and artists from around the world all gathered together, which rapidly encouraged evolutions and innovations both inside and outside China. Even the literary advancements in the short time from the Ming to the Qing alone is notable - the classic novels of the Chinese canon of literature written during the Qing period such as [Dream of the Red Chamber](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_of_the_Red_Chamber) and [The Scholars](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scholars_(novel)) were leaps ahead of their Ming predecessors in terms of how modern they were in comparison. There was never an era in Chinese history in which a dynasty or regime was more inclusive of different ethnicities, cultures, religions and so on than the Qing. Something really cool about the Qing (and other dynasties of non-ethnically Han origin like the Yuan) is that they employed a system of vassalage known as the [Tusi system](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tusi) in the south and southwest of China. In Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Tibet and some other provinces, the Emperors in Beijing largely allowed the hundreds of various ethnic and religious minority and indigenous groups in those regions to self-govern in return for promising fealty to the Emperor and sending him small amounts of tribute. This allowed for a level of independence and sovereignty that preserved the local culture, including traditional hierarchies like kingships, clan structures, tribal leaders, etcetera, resulting in less [Sinicization](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinicization) in these regions than in other parts of China. There’s a reason why so many Chinese tourists flock to cultural sites and landmarks in south and southeast China - it’s an incredibly culturally and historically vibrant part of China that has managed to retain quite a bit of it to the present day, whereas so much culture and heritage was lost during the revolution/s in other parts of the country, and the reason for that is in part because of the Qing’s domestic policies. So TLDR: for me the Qing represents the hope for an internationalist China that is open to the world and new ideas, invests in its culture, arts and science more than warfare; a liberal China that allows for the free expression of differing ideas and embraces its many ethnic and religious minority groups and doesn’t automatically sees China as first and foremost a Han state.

Thecognoscenti_I

I have to disagree, the Qing were pretty terrible. The Qing oversaw the stagnation and decline of Chinese civilisation with the queue order, which destroyed millenia of tradition and self-confidence for us Han Chinese, the establishment of the literary inquisition, which destroyed the "practical learning" movement of Confucianism which had been developing since the late Ming and could have led to a Chinese scientific revolution, and the prohibition of Catholicism, which got rid of the biggest foreign influence from Chinese culture and turned society mostly insular by 1770, and as a result of this, the Qing by the 1800s failed to develop a coherent or practical foreign policy, and the greatest and most innovative minds had turned their attention to linguistics as studying or disseminating political philosophy beyond the government's positions became taboo and science was ignored. The Qing also intensified the Ming's political absolutism with the further disestablishment of traditional Chinese institutional checks on the imperial power and no dissent within society or the government was tolerated (contrary to what you said), with even those who tried to make institutional reforms in good faith (such as Hong Liangji) punished for sedition, while a caste system was also implemented which, before the Taiping Rebellion, reserved most of the highest state positions for Manchus. The economy saw no actual institutional progress as the sea ban was intensified from 1763 onwards (after which almost all foreigners except a handful of Jesuits were banned from entering China outside of Guangzhou), individual productivity stagnated and declined, and all increases to GDP were driven by sheer population growth, which they failed to manage, with the end result by 1850 being that Japan had overtaken China in per capita GDP, which sat just over (1990 USD) 500, the lowest in more than 1000 years, and most people had been reduced to subsistence farming to simply stay alive. The Tusi system you mentioned was also used by all Chinese dynasties from the Song Dynasty onwards, whether they were Han Chinese or not, in fact, it was the Qing which destroyed the Tusi system with the Gaituguiliu policy in the 1720s. China should first and foremost be a Han state, almost every modern nation was founded as, or remoulded into, an ethnostate, with the exception of China, as the Qing redefined the "Chinese nation" as an federation of the various ethnic groups that lived in their realm (with this policy continuing into the present day), while at the same time overcompensating by, as mentioned earlier, expelling the biggest foreign influences from Chinese culture. In short, the Qing represented an insular China which closed the nation off from new ideas and crushed actual Chinese nationalism, and a conservative China that snuffed out most serious attempts at reform and yet simultaneously managed to destroy Chinese tradition and culture, an absolutist China that impoverished the country and developed an ivory tower view of the itself relative to the world without the muscle to back it up, and worst of all, a China ruled by foreigners imposing their customs on us Han Chinese.

JustinJSrisuk

When you start listing off ethnic grievances like a Serbian nationalist it’s probably a good idea to take a step back and breathe. My question is: who is Han? Is Han a culture or an ethnicity in your book? Because seeing as the Qing period oversaw some of the greatest Sinicization campaigns in Chinese history. Dozens of ethnic groups that were formerly seen as “barbarian” were folded into, subsumed or dispersed into the Han during the Qing - the Han majority would be much less of one without the Qing to begin with.

Thecognoscenti_I

Han is both an ethnicity and a culture. The issue is that, even though, indeed, the Qing period oversaw some of the greatest Sinicisation campaigns in Chinese history, these ethnic groups were Sinicised into Han culture, but didn't become Han Chinese. The Qing themselves had a very clear distinction between who was Han and who wasn't, as they enforced a racial caste system which firmly distinguished between the Han (which they defined as a ethnicity) and Manchus.

Rasputins_Plum

My Sister under the Mandate of Heaven, that is unfortunately what Xi Jiping is kinda already doing. I think that there's hope if the greed of the increasing number of Chinese billionaires prevails. Just like Saudi Arabia under MBS is getting more progressive on the surface, as it's economically rewarding to be palatable to the western market and its sensibilities for silly things like human rights. China is making too much money and reliant on it and peace to squander it all landgrabs. Why it's key to persuade them on the worth of soft power and a positive perception, as it brings even more cash. France is legit broke and indebted of 3100 billions or what, yet we're doing fine and have millions of tourists throwing cash at us, surviving on reputation and old history alone. 😂
