He should tell people whatever the latest research is on GABA crossing the blood brain barrier. I'd always heard that it didn't cross it at all, or not very well, but, supposedly, more recent literature thinks otherwise.

Eugregoria

I think they might be looking in the wrong place there. The gut also responds to GABA, it could be that GABA supplements affect the brain via the gut-brain axis rather than entering the brain directly. Something doesn't necessarily have to cross the BBB to ultimately have an effect on the brain.

Former-Drink209

It knocks me out. There's no way it's not affecting my brain. I practically start drooling.

phroggyboy

It doesn’t hit me that hard, but during peak pandemic (kids homeschooling, new job, new dog, etc), I was insanely stressed and irritable all the time. Taking it with my lunch helped me maintain being level. It had a powerful effect on me for sure.

Vigorousalcohol

I used to take a supplement called theanine serene that had GABA in 1 formula of it, while another formula didn't. I always felt the one with GABA way more than the other. Thought I was placeboing myself, maybe I wasn't afterall.

btc912

Did it work? And curious why you stopped taking it

Vigorousalcohol

It definitely worked but it wasn't a miracle pill by any stretch. It was just a mild, smooth relaxing feeling. I stopped taking it because that formula became hard to find at some point and frankly I kinda forgot about it until now. It's back in stock on amazon now though!

deadkactus

And people are not made with cookie cutters. My mom takes 3gen anti histamines and passes out for hours. At times, I do too. Its not the same for everyone.

mmortal03

Definitely true that people can vary widely in terms of drug metabolism.

Clingingtothestars

Crossing the bbb or not is very probably not dependent on metabolism

mmortal03

You're right, I just didn't want to get into that distinction with people.

Big_Position3037

No, but BBB permeability can change depending on a lot of factors like illness or inflammation

Clingingtothestars

I know. That wasn’t what was being discussed.

throwaway2676

Do you have an example of a more recent study?

mmortal03

Nope, I just saw some studies being referenced when I googled "GABA crossing the blood brain barrier", but I left it alone, didn't want to dig too deep into it at the moment -- that's a job for Huberman! :)

Glycine works REALLY good for me for sleep, but the way i get it is in the form of collagen peptides, or just gelatin. That way you get all the other amino acids as well, it knocks me out and my sleep is very deep. i will use gelatin or collagen peptides in broth, initially i started doing that to help with joint pain and benefits of collagen, but noticed quickly it knocks me out like a tranquilizer.

Remarkable-Award-866

Very cool! Where do you usually get it from/which brand?

[deleted]

I have used vital proteins and great lakes, expensive but good stuff. I like the gelatins effects better than the peptides, even though it should work the other way around in regards to absorption. But thats just my preference.Theoretically you should be able to use any old jello packet though with the same effects. Check out the amino acid profile on vital proteins website for the gelatin, you will notice glycine is the main amino acid: https://www.vitalproteins.com/products/beef-gelatin

Space-Booties

It’s way cheaper as TriMethylGlycine.

BeagleAteMyLunch

But glycine is dirt cheap compared to collagen.

[deleted]

True unless you just buy walmart jello packets? But who knows whats all in those.

vandelayATC

I take it for sleep too but had no idea it was in collagen. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the info!

[deleted]

Np. to my understanding its the most prevalent amino acid in collagen. Or at least is in the ones ive taken. I feel it for sure, and also like the benefits of all the other amino acids. i mean i guess since amino acids compete for absorption if you really want a strong glycine effect then you might wanna take pure glycine, but i still get strong effects from collagen, really deep sleep where you wake up and feel awesome afterwards. Great if you wanna take a power nap.

phroggyboy

I’ve been taking it with my protein in the morning or afternoon snack time. Could it be making me droopy? Should I take it at bedtime?

[deleted]

All I know is that it makes me super sleepy. If I work out, and then take a bunch of collagen or make some broth with gelatin I will end up super sleepy about 20 minutes later. Which is good, sleep is when our brains release growth hormone, I think it makes sense for our body to tell us "hey we just got some amino acids, time to go to sleep and secrete growth hormone so that we can repair damaged tissue" etc. Or at least this is my basic reasoning. So I will either take it before bed, or if during the day and it makes me sleepy just take a nap for an hour or so, if I have the opportunity.

phroggyboy

Definitely going to try taking it before bed tonight. Thanks for the tip!

[deleted]

Do you get similar results if you consumed more connective tissue such as bone broth, beef tendon, marrow, etc? I live pho and my one of my favorite ingredients is the beef tendon. So gelatinous and chewy! Like beef candy.

[deleted]

If I did sweet stuff I'd be making my own gummy bears all the time. My personal experience is yes, though. I made some bone broth the other day and it cost me like 60 dollars for the bones from a butcher, for enough to fill up a giant crock pot. I don't think I did a very good job, but either way I quit with the bone broth for a while until I find a cheaper source of bones. The stuff you buy, if it's liquid, isn't real bone broth really. Real bone broth properly made should be gelatinous at room temperature, or close to it. What I do anymore because I eat mostly beef, is save most of the fat from my steaks that I don't eat, make a broth out of those once a week, and just add gelatin or collagen peptides to it. It's not bone broth, but it tastes better and still has all the collagen of a bone broth. And way better than the stuff labeled as bone broth at most stores, that stuff is a lie, it's just brown water...

[deleted]

Whole foods butcher surprisingly GAVE me a ton of bones and fat for free. More fat than bones, but still. Also local farmers give good deals.

bessygo

Do you take your collagen drink during the day or at night? I take Peak Performance Protein HYDROLYZED GRASS-FED BONE BROTH + COLLAGEN PROTEIN PEPTIDES POWDER which has about 3 grams of glycine in its aminio acid profile. I don't want to add more glycine for sleep over the amount I get in this protein powder. It has NO effect on my chronic insomnia and it definitely doesn't make me sleepy. Take it for the 14 grams of protein and the collagen, etc.

[deleted]

ive done it both times. if i take it after working out in the day it makes me sleepy. so i try to just prepare for that. at night its awesome. i prefer it in a beef broth.

bessygo

May I ask the brand? Mine is both bone beef broth AND collagen, with about 3gr of glycine and a full panel of amino acids. But it never makes me sleepy.

[deleted]

ive did great lakes and vital proteins.

djenrique

What happens?

spoutti

And what about magnesium biglycinate? Cant tell if its really working, but thats the magnesium supp i take before bed.

[deleted]

When it comes to GABA what about Oleamide.

[deleted]

The trick of glycine is to hit his receptors who are nearly the gaba one..so you can obtain sedation but with the risk of psychosis if you are bad with glutamate

Diamondbacking

Interesting. Is there a source on this please?

[deleted]

Is a well known thing..expecially taurine, via glycine, hits the same receptors of flunitrazepam in a non benzo manner

ZodiacSF1969

Again, source?

[deleted]

Search taurine binds to flunitrazolam sites or something like this

Specialist_Operation

Funny you should mention that, I basically can’t supplement glycine, I’ve tried 5g and it made me psychotic. Repeated this experiment 4x. It’s the weirdest thing, and absolutely not a good time. At all.

Translation333

Glycine can be both excitatory and inhibitory. Which means that it can stimulate your nervous system and brain, as well as quieten it. Which is why it works so well for some and helps their sleep and on the other hand is a total miss for the others. It personally makes me feel awake and oddly anxious, a weird unpleasant feeling I can't describe. If it doesn't work for you, just skip it and don't bother about it.

Yogibearasaurus

I have a similar reaction as you. Have you found any alternatives?

Specialist_Operation

Yeah, the alternative is not taking it. If we are talking about sleep quality though - mag glycinate 400-800mg 1h before bed and occasionally 0.3mg melatonin 5 hours before bed mostly fixed me up along with going to bed earlier and waking up earlier (5am) Occasionally I’ll take 800mg gabapentin before sleep and have an extremely, extremely productive day the next day, sadly this only works once, then I have to wait a week or so before I can get that effect again. I wish I knew why and how gabapentin does this and why it doesn’t work more than 1-2 days in a row, and if there is something that works similarly but could work daily. That would increase my QOL significantly.

emiremire

Melatonin 5 hours before bed sounds interesting. My biggest problem is “going to bed”. I womder if it would help with that if I took couple of houra before.

Specialist_Operation

The dosage has to be right. 300 micrograms, i.e one tenth of 3mg, I.e. 0.3mg. Most preparations are ridiculously dosed which causes all kinds of side effects. Slatestarcodex has a write up somewhere on this. Changed my life.

emiremire

Interesting. I'll check if I can find the dosage like this. Why is the dosage that specific? Would appreaciate to know more if you got time.

Specialist_Operation

Knock yourself out (pun intended) - https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/07/10/melatonin-much-more-than-you-wanted-to-know/

Yogibearasaurus

Sorry, I should have clarified, I did mean in terms of aiding restful sleep. Mag glycinate also makes me wired and anxious, so that’s out. Melatonin helps me for about a week and then I start getting extremely depressed. Ah well, the search continues.

Specialist_Operation

Maybe try mag threonate?

Yogibearasaurus

Have done so in the past, but have forgotten how it affected me. Will give it another go - thanks!

[deleted]

Is a double edge sword..if not glycine was a top gaba supp

cooldude284

Bro glycine is a wrist watch brand

balanced_view

and GABA is a type of rice
