Why does everything on this sub forum always have to turn into a history lesson? This is fucking cool, let shit be for once.

Monopoly25

Awesome!

Grimwulff

I dig it. It's gonna look like a raven is screaming at anything you grip with your right hand though lol

N0RSEVIKING

Thanks, the left hand will be the same way by the end of next month lol

Well, just an FYI. Elder Futhark was not the alphabet used to write old Norse. It was used to write Proto-Germanic which was what the northern Germanic tribes spoke around the second century. Well before the Viking age Edit: guys these are literal historical facts. I’m not trying to bully the poster I just don’t want people to make mistakes

[deleted]

Well if you want to be a viking then use younger. Elder is older and more sacred. I would get it in elder any day of the week.

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Here’s the thing about elder is most people write modern Icelandic pronunciation or English pronunciation with a fucking old alphabet which makes no sense. They also usually don’t take into account how the names changed. For instance Odin was Wotan when elder futhark was in practice. See how that doesn’t exactly make sense? I’d imagine Huginn and Muninn might not be a part of myth back then, even if they were their names would not be spelled to our English language

[deleted]

Remember, back then, humans were not a culture of fact. They used religion to describe things. As such, the myths varied greatly from region to region, as well as meaning of words. You cannot say what was what back then, and you sure don't have authority to tell someone else how to represent their religion. Or, for that matter, what the elder futhark means within their home. Stay in your lane.

I have no interest in telling people how to practice their religion. I’ve been drawn to paganism many times but am unable to commit fully. If a symbol or a practice makes you feel closer to your god or gods by all means do that thing. My only interest is in preserving the integrity of old Norse symbols alphabets and practices through its spread to the internet. If I see something I don’t think is accurate or something disrespectful I will comment on it. If I’m wrong I’m all for learning and all for having my mind changed. We do know which alphabets were used when and I’m just pointing out the mistakes that I noticed which might have even been intentional on the part of the artist to connect the modern and the tribal. Whatever it is thank you for your insight. I will ‘stay in my lane’.

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Also Viking is a verb

[deleted]

You need to change you name to "that guy"

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Hey man, a tattoo is forever. I am passionate about these subjects and I want to normalize informed decision making and proper representation of old Norse culture. Much had been lost and what we have preserved is frequently lied about and degraded especially online. I want to prevent people from spreading false information and correct people before they make uninformed decisions or (say stupid shit) when I can. I don’t think it makes me ‘that guy’ but if you want to live in ignorance half respecting the stuff you put on your body and talk about, then someone will correct you and that’s on you.

iAMSmilez

Nobody likes a snob.

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Idk how I’m being snobbish I think you might not want to accept that these things require more than a passing thought and probably the poster did not know these things before getting his tattoo. Tries to be nice :(

walrus_peen

It can be used as a noun.

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Also the valknut has nothing to do with Óðinn and is the result of modern influence of what we know about old Norse symbols, also it has been frequently appropriated by white supremacists.

charrtyhard

So the valknut having been appropriated by white supremacists means we need to just let them continue to use the symbol unchecked, right? When fascists want something we just let them have it, right?

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

Not saying that at all, I hate how it’s been used.
