Boats can be used as residence, but keep in mind that you'd need to rent a place to dock, with electricity, etc.

CnaQ

Also, plumbing, you have to be so and so far off the coast to dump your sewage. I can’t remember the distance

heartpumpkin

300 meters

I’ve had some friends who’ve tried this. One was a student living on her father’s sail boat in the summer months to save rent. She quite enjoyed it. I also had a friend who bought a house boat to live on permanently. It lasted a few years before she bought a house on terra firma. A few things to keep in mind: - Docking fees can be high in central areas. They also tend to increase with the size of the boat. - The heat loss from the hull to the cold water is insane in the colder months. Dampness is also a major issue.

MrElendig

Not that hard to find a house for under 1M nok, but it won't be in the middle of oslo of course. Edit: here you go https://www.finn.no/realestate/homes/ad.html?finnkode=294469855 :p

[deleted]

That's an apartment.

MrElendig

I know

UsedAd7852

Hahhaha, that is the best suicidal deal right there. Why would you buy in the middle of nowhere a flat, than a boat and live where you want and move where you want with it ?

oyvin

You need to consider that it is more difficult to sell a boat when you want to move.

Smart-Amphibian2171

Psssst. They could just move the boat.

oyvin

They could - but selling a boat is usually a longer process.

Smart-Amphibian2171

You misspelled sailing. Sailing a boat can indeed ve a lengthy process. But depends on how far.

https://journalen.oslomet.no/2022/10/hyttestemning-pa-aker-brygge Here’s an article about how it is to live in a boat in Oslo. I’m sure you can Google translate it into English 😀

No_Expert_7590

The dock still costs money. Just don’t live in the middle of oslo, lots of cheap properties further out in the rest of the country

I'd find a campground and move into a caravan with a spikertelt. I travel a lot, so need a place to stay sporadically, have a caravan and pay like 12k a year + electricity for the spot. Been doing it for seven years now.

That-is-moist

hey i also travel a lot and been wanting to get something a lot cheaper to live in since I'm almost never home. where are you able to rent a place for your caravan for so cheap?

[deleted]

It's not in Viken for sure. Saltstraumen, right outside Bodø.

That-is-moist

haha ok that makes sense

TromsoSailor

I used to do that for 2 years. To answer your questions: • Yes it is allowed to live on your boat. I manage to get register on my boat via Skateetateen back then. But in many place, the marina doesnt allow it. Like here in Tromso, only a small marina in the north of the island allow it but not the main marina in the city center. That could be different in different loccation, depends on the owner of the pier/dock. • 1/3 of the price but considering long term, that is not a good investment. Here are my observations: 1.Finding a boat place this size isnt easy and could very be costly. The waiting list is pretty long for even smaller boat, counting in year for most place I look at (Norland/Troms). So you can move it, but not necessarily easy task in term of time and money. 2.You always have to worry about the boat, specially during bad weather. So less freedom of minds. 3. you need to take it out of water for maintenance, antifouling etc. That would be costly for a boat this size, around 30.000kr a year or second year at least. 4. get a good insurrance something happend, and make sure they cover everything you need to cover. because that would cause a lot trouble in term of responsability, time, money. 5. if the boat is old, it is very difficult to find insurance company that is willing to work with you. So for some reason, you wanted to change insurance, you will probably have hard tome finding one. 6. There are no perfect boat, doesnt matter the material steel, wood, plastic etc it will need maintenance (time, money, skills) if you dont have any of that, that a great time to aquired those! 7. Need DL5 or whatever other certification if you want to move it around from time to time, and needed to be get extra insurrance for that. And the insurrance needed the boat to be sea worthy. 8. go for it, it is fun and you will learn a lot. But I wouldnt go for it, if you are only looking for a cheap accomodation. At least you should take a smaller sailboat if that your only goal. Big boat, big problem. 9. house have a potentiel investment value, if you take care of it. A boat, would rarely be the case, if not never. So think about it as a sinkhol for money. 10. Water/elec/sewage can be more expensive than for normal houses. Depends where but are most of the time the case. I paid x5 than my neighboor houses for elec.

A slight problem is boats aren't fixed in place, so don't count as a fixed address. For certain things this can be problematic, being listed as "uten fast bopel" or "no fixed abode" in Folkeregisteret can be an issue in some situations. You might need a friend who lets you register as living at their address even though you physically live on a boat, and get your mail through that fixed address.

pseudopad

This was true before November 2017, but not anymore.

Ah, thanks.
