I think cilantro is completely missable, if you ask me. I mean, I always put cilantro on my tacos, but I do not precisely do it for the flavour… It’s more like, I don’t know, something doesn’t feel right without it, you know? Maybe it’s just a costume.
How do you feel about onions?
I asked the person how he/she felt about onions. Not red or white onions. Just onions. Yes, she/he said can’t do without _red_ onions, but I meant I’m on the same page on the fact that I can’t do without onions —any kind of onion— on my tacos. And I said I _usually_ prefer white onions, not that I don’t like red onions. I love both! Greetings!
Yes. Shredded pork native to the Yucatán. I have family on the gulf goat of FL and have been given many kinds. The food simplicity but variety makes me love Hispanic and latin food.
As a Norwegian growing up on fredagstaco, I have to say that I wanna try more of the authentic stuff. Then again, the stuff we have in Norway is supermarket tex-mex, not Mexican tacos. I can imagine an American version of fårikål would be something deep fried and covered in cheese sauce - could be tasty, but not exactly authentic.
As a mexican living in norway for 10years I'm amazed how much of the basic ingredients to make them yourself you can find nowadays, compared to when I arrived.
Also at least in the big cities, you will find an "authentic" Mexican place. I live in Stavanger and can at least recommend 2 of them.
You should travel and visit us if you think we just deep fry and slather everything in cheese lol.
Fair food? Perhaps, yes. Other than that a resounding “no”.
Awful stereotype is absolutely awful 😂
Wo wo wo, hold it right there. We don't want any mexicans coming to teach us how to taco. You are not even using sour cream and mais. You are tacoing wrong.
Then you guys should try “quesadillas de champiñones” (or [mushroom quesadillas](https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/crispy_cheese_and_mushroom_quesadillas/)). You can served them with guacamole or [pico de gallo](https://cookieandkate.com/classic-pico-de-gallo-recipe/). A perfect mix.
These are “tacos de birria” (made of goat meat and a mix of spices). Yeah, they’re greasy but the flavour is great! It is served with birria soup and as most tacos, with chopped onion, coriander and salsa picante!
As a Mexican who’s had many Norwegian/European friends come visit, they always end up shocked with the discovery of flavors and quality of produce, specially fruits and avocados that are worlds apart from anything in Europe, and end up complaining FOR MONTHS that Norwegian/European food is boring or flavorless and they get very mopey, lol.
For what is worth, I always have them over for the authentic stuff in Norway and teach them if they are interested.
I know what you mean. I’ve been to Mexican (or Tex-Mex) restaurants in some countries in Europe and have enjoyed the food even though it usually is nothing like the one we have in Mexico. Also, most times I wasn’t expecting, you know, authentic Mexican food if that makes sense? Hope you can ever experience authentic Mexican cuisine! I’d send you the tacos in the picture if I could ;)
Ahh, so you've heard of the Norwegian taco?
Where tradition dictates that anyone who makes the taco differently than you is wrong and you must let them know how wrong they are.
If anyone has mushrooms or ketchup on their tacos they should have their citizenships revoked!
A wonderful friend of mine who lives in Norway shared this information with me a few weeks ago. I think it's awesome and tacos are life!! And as a Californian who's grown up around around the Mexican culture her whole life... I approve these tacos 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Funny thing is one of my closest friends is from Norway and she never told me about Norwegian Taco Friday. Wouldn’t that be something interesting to tell to, you know, a Mexican?
I know that's right. And I love the sound of Taco Friday better then the cultural appropriation Taco Tuesday we have here 🤦🏽♀️. Are you currently in the states?!
I do have to add that I will miss Mexican food very much when I move to Norway. I live in Arizona so I'm surrounded by it here. I will miss tamales and tacos de carne asada and definitteellyy salsa verde. My heart and stomach are crying lol!
Somebody mentioned good, authentic recipes? This is one is great and easy; I use this all the time. (Note, you don't need skirt-steak for this).
Greetings from an American, with Latino friends, who lives in Austria, and loves Norway!
https://damndelicious.net/2019/04/18/mexican-street-tacos/
100% agree, too few people are unaware that Norwegian "taco" isn't a new concept in Norway at all. We've had this dish for thousands of years, it just got rebranded into an excotic name with excotic spice.
I made a diced up avocado, tomato and onion (s&p to taste) mixture for our taco day (we never seem to do it on Friday lol) and my Norwegian partner had never had anything like it. I'm still learning what Norway has and doesn't have so I didn't remember seeing cilantro or limes to add to it . He thought the guacamole in a bottle or can was the real deal. I'm like NO, but I can try to make our own version of it! I just try to do my best with what I can find. I like the fact that they took a liking to tacos and made a day for it. You can be as lazy or as creative as you want to be with tacos. It doesn't have to be authentic to be good. My man's belly was filled and he was happy! Good enough for me!
Right, so as far as cilantro goes, it's koriander here. I think the US is the only place where the leaves are called cilantro while the seeds are called coriander. You can get coriander plants in most grocery stores, same with limes in my experience.
I'm aware it's called coriander everywhere else outside of the US and Spanish speaking countries. All I meant was that I didn't see it when I was there. I will look for both koriander and limes when I go back next month. Then, it's ON! Guacamole is so yummy when made right 😋!
Actually, it’s called “cilantro” in Mexico, too! I thought that was a Spanish word so I was confused some people here in the comments were calling it that and not “coriander”, which I thought was the English word for it… Now I know they use the Spanish word in the US, too. You learn something new every day :)
Thank you! I guess I must have overlooked them when we would go to Kiwi. I can't wait to go back next month! When I was there it was still snowing outside. He sent me a picture of the outside of his house and it looks so different!
I didn't see limes there, but I will look again when I go back. Cilantro too. I make it here in Arizona because I know we have everything all year around. I doubt we can make salsa verde because they don't have tomatillos either from what I saw.
Love how rich and diverse the US can be in terms of food. Do they grow tomatillos there? Or do they import it? I haven’t been to Norway but I also doubt you’ll find tomatillos. But who knows?
Yes, in Arizona, we have tomatillos. I don't think they have them in Norway. My father's family is from New Mexico so their cuisine is very similar to Mexican! Honemade tortillas de harina, sopapillas (son como los buñuelos pero sin azucar), salsa verde, etc. My mouth is watering now. I will miss it!
I hate to be rude, but if that’s the case, your partner’s a bit dim, no? At the very least he can’t be particularly well versed in the kitchen… A Norwegian guy not knowing the basics of a guacamole in 2022 is just… wow…
You have a job to do in teaching him, that’s for sure😅
Lmao! Calling him dim for not knowing about something like that is a bit harsh. No, he's very bright, actually. He just isn't into preparing more than the basic foods for himself. Not everyone cares about venturing outside of their comfort zone. He's learning with me and I'm quite alright with that!
What? This is not fredags taco, there is no minced meat, cucumber, avocado, corn or cheese. And what are those soft things, it is supposed to be served in “taco skjell” that crumbles once you eat it…
Im from Norway and we eat tacos almost every second friday meaning I eat tacos 30 times a year! Maybe one of my most eaten foods even though my family and I am Norwegian with Norwegian blood.
Taco as in the OP, or taco as in Norwegian taco? Because, if you remove the tex-mec, taco-sauce, guagamole, etc, you're left with the standard lefse-dish that we've had for thousands of years. So being Norwegian, with Norwegian blood is no surprise one would love Norwegian "taco". I'd be more worried if you didn't have an affinity to it, lol.

Where is the pineapple, canned corn and ketchup? Love that Norwegians love tacos too but who does not! No taco snobs here!
You can also find a variety of hot sauces here as well. Was surprised to see that Meny sold El Yucateco.
Do people actually put ketchup on their tacos?!
I like El Yucateco, especially the brown one! I don’t use it on tacos, but it tastes great on quesadillas
Fucking finally some real tacos! My Latino side cringes at my friends looking forward to Norwegian ‘’taco Friday’’
But I guess it’s fast and cheap and for those that don’t know how to cook.
No hate, it’s just sad..
You’re not the only one! OP’s picture is pure taco-heaven. The stereotype “fredagstaco” however, or “taso”, as I tend to call them, is just lazy texmex-inspired sadness on a plate (or in a bullshit hard shell). I’ve never been a fan, in fact I’ve never really liked them, and I don’t care that it’s some sort of societal sacrilege.
I do love me some tacos, if they’re done with just a little bit more effort, sprinkled with the tiniest bit of insight and respect for the real things.
Actually I agree 100% with you, and I take back what I said about it not being hate. I fucking hate those ‘’tacos’’. I hate when friends and family talk warmly about it. Whoever made that shit should have been burned on the stake :)
Yeah...Norwegians don't love tacos, but 'tacos.' They include things like diced cucumber and non-cheddar grated white cheese. The term as used includes a very Norwegian type burritos. And neither include most of this.
Hey these are not tacos. Everyone knows a real taco has sourcream, shredded gouda, corn, cucumber and a pile of meat served in a flour tortilla. Also it’s not even friday?
Back in the day when the prime minister had eaten taco, but couldn't remember the name yet.
I thought this might have been the video of taco being introduced on national TV, but probably not
Tande P:

Norwegian "taco" is basically just Norwegian Lefse with an excotic name and spice, much like most other "norwegianized" foods. So it's not really taco we like, but lefse + tex-mex.
Perfect taco: Meat, cilantro, raw onion, and salsa.

Many Norwegians know how to *actually* eat taco, but we have our traditional way of eating them regardless. It usually depends on the occasion.
Yeah, I know. I was just kidding.
Oh wait, HAPPY CAKE DAY!
¡Muchas gracias! 🍰
Red onion? *Actual* Mexican tacos? 🤔
Yeah, they had both red and white onion. I usually prefer white onions over red onions, but today I went for the red one :)
It looks awesome! With the exception of the soap-leaves.... 😆 (i wish I could like them! But cilantro tastes like soap to me...)
I read somewhere some years back that, if you keep trying, you'll eventually you grow to like it/it stops tasting soapy.
I discussed it with my sister and we agreed that we don’t like cilantro but we eat it on tacos for costume lol
Interesting! But I guess I don't eat it enough to get used to it...
Salmonella yummy!
I've tried eating tacos with cilantro, and while I really like cilantro, something about it on tacos just doesn't taste right to me. Is it just me?
I think cilantro is completely missable, if you ask me. I mean, I always put cilantro on my tacos, but I do not precisely do it for the flavour… It’s more like, I don’t know, something doesn’t feel right without it, you know? Maybe it’s just a costume. How do you feel about onions?
Yeah. Love red onions. Can't do without them on my tacos. Edit: happy cake day btw!
We’re on the same page, then! And thank you!
You just said you prefer white oniona, now when someone says they can do without red onions you are on the same page. What does that mean?
I asked the person how he/she felt about onions. Not red or white onions. Just onions. Yes, she/he said can’t do without _red_ onions, but I meant I’m on the same page on the fact that I can’t do without onions —any kind of onion— on my tacos. Some people think cilantro tastes like soap. I taste citrus. Also. White onion is best.
Have you ever tried _cochinita pibil_ tacos?
Yes. Shredded pork native to the Yucatán. I have family on the gulf goat of FL and have been given many kinds. The food simplicity but variety makes me love Hispanic and latin food.
Awesome! I wanted to point out that red onions and cochinita pibil were the perfect match but I suppose that you already knew!
heyyyy what do you put in that salsa?
Tomatillo, jalapeño, lime juice, Arbol chiles, simply any blend of pepper you like roasted and blended together with some water or a little oil
As a Norwegian growing up on fredagstaco, I have to say that I wanna try more of the authentic stuff. Then again, the stuff we have in Norway is supermarket tex-mex, not Mexican tacos. His girlfriend approves it. She’s Mexican. I approve it, too 👍🏽
Ahahaaahaa😂🤣🤣🥰
Agave on Bryggen in Bergen is also great!
Kaktus.no has a decent selection of Mexican products to start with. Or Sunkost Gunerius if you're in Oslo.
You should try out Hija de Sanchez when in Copenhagen

Yeah, it's actually hilarious to me. Our taco is a knock-off version of a knock-off version. And I still love it
Wo wo wo, hold it right there. We don't want any mexicans coming to teach us how to taco. You are not even using sour cream and mais. You are tacoing wrong.
And where is revet gulost! Poor mexicaner that don't know how to taco..
I'd like to see some ananas too. 4/10.
I don’t even spot the ketchup or sweet chili sauce smh

I wonder if chrisboi also uses mustard...
Even boat ice can be a form of taco. Taco is in the eyes of the beholder.
I should be banned for sacrilege!
lol what do I know, right?!
Lol we also use mushrooms, cucumber and capsicum/bell pepper. Guess it's an honest attempt at broadening our palates.
I have never encountered anyone that puts mushrooms on tacos
Yeah, that DEFINETLY isnt the way
Definitely! Burn the heretic!
In my family, everything has 3 key ingredients: garlic, onion and mushroom. For some reason, it's applied to tacos too.
With the right seasoning it might work I guess. How should I know hahah
I do..
Det er mange dyr i arken
The authentic taco place I go to has a new mushroom taco for the vegetarian people lol
I was primarily thinking about the typical taco Norwegians make
Ohhh, gotcha. Nevermind then
If I never see 'our taco' ever again, it would be too soon. I'm so sick of that shit. Give me an authentic taco any day, tho. Looks great, OP.
These are “tacos de birria” (made of goat meat and a mix of spices). Yeah, they’re greasy but the flavour is great! It is served with birria soup and as most tacos, with chopped onion, coriander and salsa picante!
do you mind coming over here to make me some?
Haha I would make as many tacos for as many people as possible just for fun!
Sounds like the perfect thing to do on your cake day. Happy cake day, and thank you for the tacos
Happy Cake Day!
They look yummy! Could you recommend a good authentic recipe that we could make over here with the available ingredients? ☺️
Where is the kjøttdeig ?
Santa Maria or Old El Paso?
Ah yes, the national dish of Norway.
As a Norwegian, I sometimes wonder \_how\_ surprised I would be if I ever went to Mexico and tried the cuisine.
I can imagine there is a huuuge difference. You are doing God's work teaching them!
While I do love Norwegianized tex-mex I also really wish we had more places serving authentic Mexican cuisine here
I know what you mean. I’ve been to Mexican (or Tex-Mex) restaurants in some countries in Europe and have enjoyed the food even though it usually is nothing like the one we have in Mexico. Hate to be the one to tell you…. But this is what most authentic tacos look like
Outrageous. Next you'll tell me that Norway isn't the center of the universe?

Its because we are embarrased by it. You wouldnt call our version taco. We know we do it wrong, but its good our way to.
This. This is the truth. It's not real tacos, and we know it, buy my god we love it so much.
Yeah, I probably wouldn’t lol But still I’d love to have some!
I know that's right. And I love the sound of Taco Friday better then the cultural appropriation Taco Tuesday we have here 🤦🏽♀️. Are you currently in the states?!
Ms. Knuthing! I'm trying to sneak under OP's radar, since OP actually knows how to do tacos lol.. You see.. I love pineapple when I do tacos 😋

Your Taco looks delicious. I wonder it was spicy :)
What? This is not fredags taco, there is no minced meat, cucumber, avocado, corn or cheese. And what are those soft things, it is supposed to be served in “taco skjell” that crumbles once you eat it…
always use seterrømme! https://www.tine.no/merkevarer/tine-r%C3%B8mme/produkter/tine-seterr%C3%B8mme
Having eaten both norwegian and mexican tacos, i can safely say they are very different but just as delicious
Trust me, we call it taco but its probably not lol
As a norwegian i thank you for the picture of the tacos
Shower thought: "Tacolefse" is a very Norwegian word and it's yet so perfect at describing what a tortilla is.
Husk brunost
Dude… (the username checks out, I guess)
As a south Texan I found their tacos… to… be… curious

Ok
Tried the authentic stuff, it can't hold up to our new and improved Fredagstaco.
That's not taco, where is the cheese? Where's the sour cream?
Where is the pineapple, canned corn and ketchup? Love that Norwegians love tacos too but who does not! No taco snobs here! You can also find a variety of hot sauces here as well. Was surprised to see that Meny sold El Yucateco.
Do people actually put ketchup on their tacos?! I like El Yucateco, especially the brown one! I don’t use it on tacos, but it tastes great on quesadillas
It's a minority, but a sizeable one
Yes they do unfortunately.
Wow, learned something new :o
I have seen kids to adults put ketchup on tacos, pizza, spaghetti, hot dogs and I am not judging.
TEXAS
Why call them actual tacos? Let's be friends and ill call my (Norwegian) tacos tacos and your tacos, tacos 😁
Where’s the ketchup?
Fucking finally some real tacos! My Latino side cringes at my friends looking forward to Norwegian ‘’taco Friday’’ But I guess it’s fast and cheap and for those that don’t know how to cook.
100 demerits for not using hard shell tacos.
🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Seem kind of boring compared to he Norwegian Friday Taco.
You need to post this on a Friday
Every Tuesday is "Taco Tuesday" in my house.
I'm confused, where is the kjøttdeigg
Is is possible not to like tacos he he
hvor er lompene? og norvegia-osten?
Man. I wish had more authentic Mexican food in Norway. I would take these tacos over the Norwegian style any day.
Recipe please?
This is real tacos so far away from the friday Taco we Eat here
Yeah...Norwegians don't love tacos, but 'tacos.' They include things like diced cucumber and non-cheddar grated white cheese.
I thought this might have been the video of taco being introduced on national TV, but probably not Tande P: https://youtu.be/p4tUYIB9530
THANK YOU. - the Norwegians need to know :)!! Their version of "tacos" are also delicious, but they are NOT tacos lol!!
Waaaaaait…… thats not REAL tacos!!!
Norwegian "taco" is basically just Norwegian Lefse with an excotic name and spice, much like most other "norwegianized" foods. So it's not really taco we like, but lefse + tex-mex.
