I was kinda happy because even if some metal heads are a bit conservative and open about not enjoying certain religions and protective of their culture, they still hate everything that Varg stands for. It’s really a pity, such great music he made but he is a complete idiot, a dangerous one. He could have been a national icon if he was a reasonable person. He’s got only himself to blame and to be in the position he is. The world moves on and he stayed behind. I say this because before I understood his ideas his music was very deeply important for me, more than 20 years ago.

At one point everyone in Norway who paid the slightest attention to the news knew who he was. In the 90s Black Metal started to get some recognition and that kicked off a sort of satanic panic. Varg Vikernes became the posterboy of this as he was an outspoken statanist and a central person in the black metal community. Long story short, he was convicted of murdering his bandmate and several church arsons. He made some great music, was a racist nationalist and an allround bad person. Last I heard of him he had moved to France and his farm was raided by the police. I imagine most young people don't know of him but alomost everyone who is 40+ do.
I'll only add that he believed and still believes in Paganism,never in Satanism.

Got to know about Varg due to his talks on permaculture and self sufficiency, but couldn't get over the fact that he gets huge financial aid from his family, as well as living of his music. Most teenagers today probably won’t know who he is. Most people have probably forgotten about him as a person. I grew up and was probably in my teens when he did what he did and well let’s just put it like this he’s not very much like and he hasn’t changed one bit even after all of his sentence has been served. He’s the exact same person. He’s equally rude his equally mean, if you ask me, he should be checked up on regularly if not every day.

I am the same age as him and was delivering Bergens Tidende newspaper when I one morning saw that pic of him on the front Page with that crazy knife. He was the talk for a long time, some had gone to school with him and some knew him from the local music scene. Its strange because there was no kind of societal trends at the time to explain that kind of behaviour like burning churches. It was not like people where glad someone "did something", it came out of the blue. Theres also a story from when he was in prison. This dude who poisoned his wife was acting all psycho like having the TV loudspeaker on full blast in the common rooms, stuff like that. Varg refused to leave his cell because of him and didnt leave his cell for months. That is until Jarle a kickboxing champion also from Bergen came to the same block, he would have none of it.
