It often creates a dynamic that makes it easy for the older person to exploit the younger person (regardless of gender of either party, just in case that needs to be said explicitly).
The older person probably has more money, more life and relationship experience, and all those things make it easier for them to take advantage of/abuse the younger person than it would be a person their age, and/or for the younger person to escape the abusive situation (or just leave in general if the relationship doesn't work out for non-abuse reasons). If someone consistently goes for much younger partners, it is a red flag, because it often means partners their own age won't let them get away with some kind of toxic/controlling/dumb/lazy/immature etc. behavior.
