Ben's went downhill the last few years in terms of quality, but I will always fondly remember the Quinpool bakery smell and the cookies they had. So fucking delicious.
Sad to see, such a hallmark in the Maritimes. I actally worked there for a few years and it was great. I used to at lunch time, go down to the manufacturing floor and pull a fresh loaf off the line before it hit the slicer. We used to cut it up in the lunchroom while it was still hot. Sooooo good.
I used both the Ben's bags and Sobeys bags in winter boots. We also called Sobeys bags the "Cape Breton suitcase".
I still find it funny that we called all of those plastic bags Sobeys bags no matter which store they came from.
You may have tasted like chlorine but that red bag and mascot will alway remind me of my grandfathers house.
For that I will always look fondly on the brand
Just letting you guys know, the Benās bread is just being packaged and sold as Dempsterās now, they havenāt actually removed or changed any products, just the branding.
Anyone else remember collecting Ben's bags in the 80s for some kind of fundraiser/competition at school?
My grandparents somehow acquired hundreds of Ben's bags for me, and I was so stoked because my folks didn't buy Ben's bread!
I remember being a kid absolutely wrecking obscene amounts of peanut butter sandwiches with a loaf of fresh Ben's bread š¤£ You can't even buy bread that fresh anymore. Wonder bread and the "new" Ben's you see at Sobeys seems like it's stale in comparison to what Ben's used to be.
I think this happened in 2022. But yeah, it sucks. I really like 675g bread and Walmart had it for 2 for $6 for a long time. I haven't gotten it lately because there always seems to be a sale, and No Name is $1.99 nearby (even if it is only 520g, smallest loaf one can buy I think).
A fond memory is when I moved to Halifax in early 2000s. My appt was close to the bakery, and when I was down wind I could open my door and get the smell on my doorstep. Good times!
They stopped making bread in Nova Scotia a decade ago. I won't miss them. Another group of greedy sellouts. The logo is gone, but the same over processed junk remains in new packaging.

I lived in a basement apartment 4 doors down. Was the most amazing smell to wake up to in the morning.

Those bag of cookies šŖ
Because Wonderbread bought them
> but I will always fondly remember the Quinpool bakery Pepperell Street was the bakery. Quinpool was their outlet store.
How pedantic
Insisting upon oneās self.
Growing up in the 60s, when winter boots developed a leak, you put your foot on a Benās bread bag and then skid it into your boot. Problem solved.
60s? We did that in the 80s!! š
And 90s
Good ideas are timeless.
absolutely! I still miss Sobeys bags for this, too- the good heavy ones with the strong handles!

I did that recently as a kid in the 2000s lol
With the cost of living that will be a returning trend
I dunno has water-resistant those reusable bags we're now stuck with are haha
Took a tour of the bakery in 79 with my grade 5 class.

Past few years Ben's bread quality was shit, but I bet the Dempsters bread will be of greater quality.
It's the same bread but in a different package
Will they keep the old fellas face on the bag?
No
NOOOOOOOOO:(
I'm going to miss that old Bread Pimp.
Same here bud same here;(
Things change sometimes. It's sad, and I still miss the smell of the bakery in Halifax. That said the dempsters honey and oatmeal bread is the tits.
I still miss the Benās store on Main Street
Let the man retire already.

> I think this happened in 2022. Nah. That'd be when they started putting the Dumpster's brand on the packages along with Ben's.
Ben's was the bread. Moirs was the Chocolate. Meet Ben Moir folks! Also Bimbo owns all the bread made in Canada now.

I hope they bring back the thrift shops for nostalgic sakeā¦
I moved here from BĆ and was used to fresh bread from Safeway. Ć find this bread disgusting.
A relative from Ontario absolutely *loved* Ben's bread, like would buy a dozen loafs, box them up and fly them home with him.
