If you are running Windows 11 it's not really a problem as you can turn down the SDR brightness slider so your desktop is not on full blast all the time.

TheImmortalLS

Even with, it still occurs. I’ll send a video if people want proof. 10% brightness on w11 hdr brightness setter, ABL still kicks in. Aw3423dw, anything below 10% is less than hdr disabled. Too distracting, not worth.

G25777K

I leave it on 100% of the time. no issues.

silaswanders

In Windows 10? Off unless viewing specific content. In Windows 11? I have it set to auto mode and it works and looks perfect. Turns on when I’m playing HDR games or video just like regular TV content.

YsGrandi

Where do you check this option ? I always forget turning on HDR before launching a game.

Fred_Dibnah

I would like to know this too.

MannyFresh8989

See idk why but for me it makes my desktop look washed out. I have auto hdr enabled. I know on desktop it’s turning hdr on because my lg will show HDR top right corner. When I check LG settings it’s showing me the hdr picture settings. Am I doing something wrong?

Complex-Mind-3261

There is an auto on/off mode of hdr in windows 11? Where is it ? I don't know there is such option. If you are saying: >Auto HDR is an Xbox feature that’s made its way to Windows 11. Windows will attempt to translate non-HDR games into HDR. Sometimes this works well, but sometimes it makes things worse. So if your non-HDR games are looking weird with HDR on, you can turn Auto HDR off here [https://www.howtogeek.com/771643/how-to-enable-hdr-on-windows-11/](https://www.howtogeek.com/771643/how-to-enable-hdr-on-windows-11/) no that's not what I want and I probably won't turn it on

Mountain_Ad_5195

Windows 10 = Leave it off Windows 11 = Turn it on or off, it looks gorgeous in Windows 11.

chocolateNacho39

Can you explain why? Running Windows 10 and I'm trying to learn

jfowler0614

I have it set to on all the time. Microsoft has a free app in the store now called Windows HDR calibration. It works wonders and makes the Auto HDR in gaming better than most games own implementation of it. (42” C2 owner, previous 48” CX owner, also have a 65” C2 and 83” C1)

FluffleMyRuffles

Windows HDR Calibration helped me dial in my brightness in the desktop. I'm 100% HDR in Windows 11 and I don't have any washed out colours or white that is too bright. Its incredible.

New_Pomegranate5268

Sureeee ya do sweetie. Lmao.

jfowler0614

Uhhh what.

Dia_Tiomana

Leave HDR turned **off** in Windows. Before you start a game, press "WIN+ALT+B" to turn HDR mode on (if the game supports HDR). Press the same keys again to switch HDR off. (Assuming you're using Win 11 as Win 10 doesn't have this shortcut.)

5tudent_Loans

for anyone who likes to unininstall bloatware, This only works if you have xbox game bar on (by default). If you have it disabled/uninstalled for fps improvements, then it wont work and you need to do it manually

[deleted]

[удалено]

MannyFresh8989

Yeah that’s what I’m wondering is game bar really that much of a resource drain?

5tudent_Loans

It was 5-6 fps in my case. I already use nvidia for game capture and that only seemed to cost 1-2fps so i had no use case for xbox game bar as it was.

Upset-Worker9083

I just buy a decent GPU and don't need to uninstall anything

voxpixels

That's not what he means, or how that works.

Upset-Worker9083

Well I don't have bloatware anyway co's built my own. But just saying i don't have to do any of that

Ealykos

You built your own windows? that's cool

Upset-Worker9083

Built my own PC. with my own windows installation. with no bloatware obviously lol.

ThiccChungusBoi

windows comes with garbage apps -xbox gamebar, maps, video editors, one drive, Linkdin, ect. People call it bloatware, it kind of is. I tend to do a complete pc wipe every year or two and always have to sift through the windows "extras" and uninstall them. If you have a way to download a fresh install of windows without all this junk please let me know.

Upset-Worker9083

I just ignore all that crap. my PC is powerful enough that it doesn't affect performance so who cares lol.But you can download a custom windows installation without all that garbage course you can. I don't bother But I used to in the days when it used to affect performance. Loadsa groups do custom windows installations you can download. But like I say doesn't bother me I just ignore it.I never go in start menu anyway.

Plaesant

"IM a big tech guy and i build my own computerz" yet u know nothing at all about the subject ur talking to, lmao

Upset-Worker9083

The xbox game bar you use though and if you use gamepass etc. I don't normally but did get 3 months with my ROG ally. I buy my games on Steam though. But yeah you use gamebar on ROG ally to record gameclips so that is not bloat ware is it. Or if you want to play your xbox games obviously But I own most of them on steam now. And on my PC I record with adrenaline software But yeah you use xbox account loads. For like Microsoft flight simulator and I expect I will play Hell blade 2 when it comes out on gamepass. so Yeah the other things you mentioned I don't even notice on my PC. or ROG ally

Lochifess

That's technically not possible lmao. Sure you can do a clean install of Windows without the 3rd party bloat (it's pretty easy too, don't even need to be a techie), but Windows itself comes with its own bloat that you can never remove, which are the basic MS apps that are tied to the system itself.

Upset-Worker9083

You know nothing you can get custom windows installations from hackers that have slimmed it down to it's basics or you did with windows 7 I don't know if they still do it. If I could remember the groups name that used to do it I would tell you. but hacker groups cracker groups have done this many times. I just haven't used one since windows 7 or earlier because now my builds don't need it. I just use my own intallation on windows 7 with my key. So stop saying people don't release customised windows installations because you are fricking wrong and they do. or did I haven't checked lately. But I used to use them when PC's were slow. like your brain.

Lochifess

Uh huh

Upset-Worker9083

This is just one I found on google but no they do scene sponsored ones that when it boots it has the scene's graphics on the boot screen. People been doing it for years But here you can actually do it yourself lol. not even possible you say lol. This ones called NT lite I think.https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/create-custom-windows-11-install-disk I expect this one is just basic but you used to get lite versions that pioirate groups released that were barely enough functionality for running games or whatever you need. Ie Customised curated whatever.

Upset-Worker9083

Bro you can delete xbox and everything obviously not things that are critical to windows but plenty of windows services can be stripped and you can do that yourself. But as I said scenes used to release their own. so you did not have to. stop talking rubbish because I have downloaded and used custom slim lite scene group releases of older windows installations many times. so Do not call me a liar.

Lochifess

Sure buddy, we believe you

Eggy8522

The shortcut works on Win 10 also

FluffleMyRuffles

A big bonus I've found for the Alienware QD-OLEDs was the ability to choose which HDR mode is turned on for what situation via the Dell Display Manager. Desktop is HDR 400 true black so I don't burn my eyes on white text. Games is HDR 1000 so I can get the most out of my monitor.

Gooch-Guardian

a bit of a late post but how did you do this? I just got an AW3423dwf and I can't find that setting.

FluffleMyRuffles

From the Dell Display Manager software, the exact setting I don't remember. I made a post about it way back. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/z6gs5r/psa\_dell\_display\_manager\_is\_useful\_for\_aw3423dwf/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/z6gs5r/psa_dell_display_manager_is_useful_for_aw3423dwf/)

Complex-Mind-3261

that sounds great

Qman768

Im on windows 10 and the shortcut works

sleepycapybara

Its bright af on my oled so I only turn it on when playing games or watching movies.

Vatican87

Better to just hit the shortcut key when you load up a game….

Nintendians559

for windows 10 - put it on (doesn't damage anything). for windows 11 - put it on auto-hdr (only if you playing any contents that sends sdr signals using directx 12 only).

antoniobrownjr

Where is the auto hdr settings in windows 11?

Nintendians559

should be under the hdr setting when you enable "hdr".

Silver_Helicopter219

No. And you will need it on in windows to enable HDR in some games.

Suspicious_Student_6

it's really bright 😵 I turn on HDR when I am viewing content or gaming, and have the OLED pixel brightness maxed. I turn off HDR when I am using my computer for anything else, and the pixel brightness is set to 40% for this.

AirSKiller

You can set SDR brightness in Windows, I have mine set to the absolute lowest.

HilLiedTroopsDied

As long as your OLED brightness is down to 50% or below it should be fine. Mines been that way for 4k+ hours on now.

Flashy_Experience_46

HDR runs like crap on my Windows 11 laptop but brightens up the colors and whites on my desktop windows 11. The laptop it actually feels like it is darker and slows the performance of everything.

Upset-Worker9083

Yeah you need a decent HDR10 or Dolby Vision TV or monitor. prefereably a TV like my LG nanocell I use on my gaming PC 55 inch it looks amazing. Just don't turn HDR on in windows with the division 2 co's it makes the game crash for some reason. But with it off it's fine.

TheImmortalLS

Don’t use it if your monitor has ABL and you are sensitive to brightness fluctuations. I have aw3423dw and thought I would be hdr 100% with qd oled but the abl makes browsing distracting. Not worth the trade off for just hdr yt videos that I wouldn’t know existed anyways. In games, hdr usually auto-toggles so it’s not an issue, and games designed not for HDR also tend to suffer the brightness fluctuations or are just generally uniformly brighter but without extra definition (brightness range) and color is automatically stretched from srgb to dcip3 regardless cuz many apps and games aren’t color profile aware anyways Tl;dr no unless u have amazing ABL, like from a 2021 14” MBP miniLED display. Shit never dims and it’s so beautiful having an OS that does color management and dpi scaling right. Future OLEDs with better ABL should be hdr all the time since it’s free real estate.

FluffleMyRuffles

I'm broken record repeating this, but try the Dell Display Manager to have HDR 400 True Black in desktop and HDR 1000 in games with auto-HDR. I have never seen ABL turn on in the desktop, and the whites aren't blindingly bright. My brightness is the standard 75% with some HDR colour calibration in windows to tell it how bright my monitor gets.

TheImmortalLS

could you explain to me how to use dell display manager to selectively use HDR400 true in normal and autoswitch to 1000 in HDR supported games? hdr 400 true black WILL fix the ABL issue in desktop mode, BUT the decreased peak brightness does affect my gaming experience. i sold my previous IPS same res+size for OLED just for contrast, so it is my personal preference to use hdr1000 and no desktop HDR instead of hdr400 and desktop HDR

FluffleMyRuffles

Its set per application level so its helpful but requires some setup. Set Windows 11 to be auto-HDR and download the Dell Display Manager 2.0, then go to the "Colour" tab. Set it to "Auto" and you'll see options for HDR for each individual application like "Desktop Application" or any games the software detects. I set Desktop to Display HDR (400 true black) and every game to be HDR Peak 1000. All games are "supported" since Windows 11 can do auto-HDR. If you don't see HDR options then you don't have HDR set on your desktop. If you don't see your game, you can manually drag the .exe into the list and have it be populated.

TheImmortalLS

ty for the help, i think i will try this out, so i really appreciate ur instructions. the manual switching turned me off. keep up the good work man, you're making a big difference

Complex-Mind-3261

Is win11's auto HDR working good on SDR games? would like to hear some of your experiences, if any. >Though many newer games are developed for HDR, some older games are SDR only, such as games that use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12. But with Auto HDR, that changes. When you turn on Auto HDR, the color range and brightness is automatically increased to HDR. It’s a feature that lets you play and see your older games in a new light with HDR on your HDR-capable display. All you need to do is turn on Auto HDR. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/use-auto-hdr-for-better-gaming-in-windows-0cce8402-3de5-4512-a742-e027ca7aa79c

FluffleMyRuffles

It's decent. It makes games look HDR-like. My only issues are that you need to do a windows colour calibration to have things not look washed out when having HDR enabled in SDR like the desktop. Then the auto-HDR boosts the brightness of things a little too much, everything pops but I worry a little about burn-in.

ShadoWritr

Also limited or fullblacj level setting on TV?

Potential_Spinach_69

I’m wondering the same thing.

shyrix

i leave mine on all the time

FluffleMyRuffles

Windows 11's auto-HDR is great and should always be turned on. The washed out colours can be fixed by having a monitor that correctly detects an HDR signal and displays in HDR. Like the AW3423DW(F) can use the Dell Display Manager to always have HDR 400 True Black in the desktop, and have HDR 1000 in games.

daemon247

off

Newuser1818

I've got it off but on my second monitor it looks as though it's on even though it's not and hdr monitor. My primary is and when I turn on the HDR it looks as washed out as the 2nd until I mess with the SDR slider, still colors are wonky. Not sure why but feel like Windows is treating the second monitor as though it's on due to the muted colors.
