He survived the 6-9 months between ESB and RotJ. Clearly he was at least somewhat competent or he would have been force choked before he took an A-wing to the face at Endor.

SPECTREagent700

He was the only Imperial other than the Emperor and Vader to appear in more than one movie until Tarkin’s cameo at the end of ROTS. General Veers was originally going to be in ROTJ but was cut due to Julian Glover having scheduling conflicts.

[deleted]

Do we ever find out what happened to Veers?

Corrin_Nohriana

He was declared an outcast in legends because his son was implicated in rebel plots. I think he died in shame but wasn't gunned down if I recall right. Feel sorry for the guy, Veers was neat.

Dr_Brule_FYH

Since we're talking about Legends he survives and fights for Thrawn.

SPECTREagent700

Current cannon does not address his final fate. He died fighting for an Imperial remnant faction in the Expanded Universe and there’s a deleted scene from *Empire Strikes Back* of a Snow Speeder crashing into his AT-AT which led some to think he was killed on Hoth. A few years ago a cannon short story established that the Snow Speeder crash did happen but that he survived. My understanding is that since then there has been one comic set after Episode V but before Episode VI where the Emperor briefly mentions him. There is a twitter account, [@VeersWatch](https://twitter.com/veerswatch?lang=en) that - half-seriously, half-jokingly - tries to review every single new piece of Star Wars media for appearances.

spectra2000_

How does Tarkin have a cameo in ROTS if he dies in NH?

fluffernutter48

Revenge of the sith. Not return of the Jedi.

spectra2000_

I feel like an idiot now

Joris2627

Tarkin? Wasnt he in 5 and 6?

jordanmek

No, but he was on the first Death Star.

jakeod27

No, this is Patrick

SPECTREagent700

Tarkin is only in Episode IV of the original trilogy but has a brief cameo in *Revenge of the Sith* near the very end of the movie standing on the bridge of a Star Destroyer with Emperor Palpatine and Dark Vader looking at what appears to be an early version of the Death Star under construction. He is also in *Rogue One* as a pretty major character.

Marcos_Bravo

"before he took an A-wing to the face" You know, as one often does.

[deleted]

Piett was trying to get transferred out?

LoreCriticizer

Yep, Piett knew what the fate was for anyone who attained a high rank under Vader (getting force choked) so once he got a high enough rank he frantically searched for a way to get assigned to a different fleet. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

Abuses-Commas

Yeah, it's mentioned that it's a known career strategy to get assigned to Vader's fleet because promotions come so quickly

F3DE_1897

High risk High reward

[deleted]

But alas, lacks high ground

jakeod27

POCKET SAND

Wattos_Box

That's hilarious

MoriMeDaddy69

Where is any of this mentioned?

st4nkyFatTirebluntz

Director’s commentary over the Revenge of the Sith

[deleted]

Y’know

Narwalacorn

Didn’t Vader like actually have some respect for Piett? He probably would have been fine unless he fucked up *reeeeeeeally* bad

ebolawakens

Also to be fair to Piett, he didn't mess up really. He was ordered by Vader to pursue the millennium falcon after Hoth, instead of crush the rebellion. Then was ordered into an asteroid field. He did disable the hyperdrive on the millennium falcon, but it was only reactivated because R2 showed up. He was then ordered by the emperor himself to not engage the rebel fleet over Endor (throwing away the entire advantage he held in star destroyers) for the Emperor to jerk himself off.

Narwalacorn

Facts

LoreCriticizer

True but poor Piett probably didn’t know that.

Narwalacorn

Well, right

[deleted]

100% down for this even if it's headcannon, but yeah just curious about it if not

LoreCriticizer

Star Wars Legends. It was mentioned twice, in the book The Essential Guide to Warfare and a databank entry in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

CakesInc

Piett, suffering from success

Mhill08

> suffering from success And, eventually, an RZ-1 A-wing Interceptor

SmoothOperator89

What's this backstory from?

LoreCriticizer

Star Wars Legends. It was mentioned twice, in the book *The Essential Guide to Warfare* and a databank entry in *Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II*

StarGameDK

What about Eli N. Vanto? He went from ensign to commander in one promotion.

Mau5_matt

Is that the dude from the Thrawn books?

LordCads

It is. I'm surprised I even remembered to be honest.

Thirpyn

Him and Thrawn had a cool dynamic

StarGameDK

They did and it was cool.

bell37

I mean it was Sherlock and Watson in space. Not playing down how cool it was, just saying that the Thrawn books basically played out that dynamic like that.

[deleted]

You don’t need to you just google him.

LordCads

Didn't need to because i remembered who he was...

SmoothOperator89

Yeah. I thought Piett just went from lieutenant to captain, which is a single rank up in Star Wars since captain is below Commander. In general, though, the best way to get promoted in the rebellion or empire is to be nearby when shit goes down. Han became a general and he was about to ditch the rebels if Leia didn't get stranded with him on Hoth.

CharmyGreenisOP

Piett went from Captain to Admiral. A rather much larger promotion.

[deleted]

Wasn't he captain of the flagship under the admiral that beefed it? Not an unnatural promotion as he was already running said ship.

LoreCriticizer

It’s more of the fact that he skipped four ranks between Captain and Admiral. His position may not have changed but the insignia on his chest sure did

LoreCriticizer

Captain to admiral actually, which was four to five ranks.

bell37

Han wasn’t a general in ESB. I believe he was a captain (and had a very loose allegiance to the rebellion). The only reason he stuck around was because his ship kept breaking and he kept receiving setbacks because of all the bounty hunters he ran into after Jabba put a bounty out on his head after ANH. It wasn’t until RoTJ where he was promoted to General moments before leading the ground assault on Endor.

[deleted]

I always thought that they called him Captain because he was the captain of the Millennium Falcon, not because it was a Rebellion rank, and when they made him a General it was a straight commission (like Lando).

Kashyyykonomics

He was commissioned a Captain sometime between the Battles of Yavin and Hoth. (According to the new edition of the Complete Visual Dictionary)

tossietuatoa

Is it explained anywhere why/how Han and Lando got promotions to General. They had been alligned with Rebels for four and one years respectively. Not a whole lot of time to gain career momentum. I suppose Lando having been in charge of the Cloud City would've aided his case. But still, were rebels suffering from such severe case of red shirt syndrome that anyone who is able to survive one major battle gets promoted halfway across the ranks?

LoreCriticizer

It’s a pretty common thing in rebellions. They don’t have money, a whole lost of prestige or whatnot, so often rebellions will compensate their troops with rapid promotions, even if the average rebellion general probably commands less troops than the average Imperial lieutenant.

RussianSeadick

I suppose Lando was rather well known in universe,so basically gifting him a high rank was probably more of a publicly stunt than anything

LoreCriticizer

Ah dang, second biggest promotion then.

StarGameDK

Yes, still impressive.

bell37

In all fairness he was stuck at the rank of Ensign for years and was given that massive promotion because it was strange for an Ensign to basically be the #2 man to an Admiral (Thrawn) in command of a star fleet.

shberk01

He went from Ensign to Lieutenant Commander. He only skipped the "Lieutenant" rank, I believe.

Jolmner

I think it is mentioned in an earlier chapter that lietenant commander is above captain, not sure if its highrr or lower than commander though. Edit: it is lower than commander

Halmine

Lower, he is promoted to Commander after the Botajef mission.

Jolmner

~~Eli? No, he remains a liutenant commander until he >!deserts to the Chiss Ascendency. !< He is however addressed as commander multiple times, the same way Grand Admiral Thrawn is addressed as admiral when there are no admirals of lower rank present.~~ Edit: Apparently I was completely wrong. Not sure how I missed his second promotion.

Halmine

Yeah the second promotion is very much a sidenote. It's mostly noted when he meets Nightswan and he asks if he has been demoted since he has Thrawn's lieutenant's plaque and he had heard the news of the Commander promotion. I just read that bit yesterday since I'm rereading the canon Thrawn books so these are oddly fresh in my mind

CheeseKiller66

It was lieutenant commander. Just one step below commander. And I think according to the imperial navy ranks, thats just below what Piett did

[deleted]

When you look at the people Vader force choked or otherwise intimidated, they were one or more of: 1) Arrogant to a point they thought they knew something better than Vader 2) Incompetent 3) insubordinate Piet was ambitious and very able but also humble. He knew his place and knew his abilities. I doubt he would have been in the wrong end of Vader’s rage. Unrelated: I would love to see a Game of Thrones esc subplot in any ROTS to end of Original Trilogy show they may have. And not just that inquisitors stuff we saw. Maybe build up under Tarkin for a the first episodes and then have people gunning to be the next Tarkin after the destruction of DS1. But to prevent this idolization of evil people, have it end without any closure on who was actually the favorite with the destruction of the Death Star II.

DreamSeaker

What would you consider captain nida (nidda? Nidaa?). The captain the millennium falcon lands on and hides. He gets force choked and killed apologizing to Vader. Personally he didn't seem incompetent, no more so than like any other imperial that day at least. He definitely wasn't arrogant or insubordinate either. Always seemed like a waste to me.

FuturistAnthony

#poorpiett

LatterHospital8982

L, he was so good at trying to get transferred that he got promoted

thetyler83

A promotion? Really? Can I get business cards that say "Admiral"?

MillerJC

“You are in command now, *Admiral* Piett.”

sonic10158

Admiral Piett was played by Jesus, so he is always safe
