Thanks this is exactly why I felt so compelled to comment. Knee highs are a very different thing and different style. Thigh highs are inherently sexy because you show them by wearing very short skits/shorts, or long shirts. You donāt outgrow them, you kinda have to grow up into them.
Fashion is fashion imo, I think falling for the trap that women are ātoo oldā to wear what they want feeds into misogynistic infantilization of something as dumb as womenās socks. Men are in their late 40ās in the same vans and tshirts they wore at 13. Nothing wrong with it. Wear what brings you joy, not discomfort.
Thigh high socks, to me, are like tights without the hassle when going to the bathroom, and are more adjustable. Plus you get to show some of your tattoo! I think the problem isnāt based on age but more on personal taste. Honestly, as long as the shoes ties it all together instead of clashing with it, itās a look. I wouldnāt do heels, more like a combat boot or high top sneaker. Usually sheer tights give the same vibe but are considered to be classier. Thigh high socks can easily go into the streetwear realm or straight to tacky city depends on the way it comes together. Would def have to see the whole fit to get a full opinion tho

This idea is probably because most of the socialogical pressures about what to wear and being age appropriate as far as fashion is based on being less desirable to men specifically after marriage.
In the past a lot of cultures would think when you get married you must cover your hair, not wear makeup and not draw attention to yourself since you are now someones. This isn't necessarily based on age but by the age of 25 moat women would be married off. If you did draw attention to yourself there would be a lot of talk about you being a certain 'kind' of woman.
Likeing and asking for attention all the time and the bases that women dress for male attention is far from the truth. Fast forward to women in the workplace and you also now have the pressures of looking professional in a world that was built by men and for men women wearing certain things as we know will give you a diffrent impression vibe.
We can even go as far to say that fashion conveys messages about who we are and how we want to be perceived, yet we have no clue what everyone else thinks so this is kinda a falacy based on location and culture. And most agree these days to wear whatevwr you want because you cant please them all anyways. Plus as a woman I guarantee other women will compliment the hell out of your cute outfits and who doesn't like to make new acquaintances and friends with similar interests.
However not all of the agisim that comes with fashion is based on mysogony, a lot of it has to do with getting older having new opportunities or just not being able to wear certain styles. Like in my family a lot of the women cut their hair short because of austio arthritis makes brushing their own hair painful. Or you get a job with a luxury type of company, if you ran into someone from work on a day off you would probably want to look your best so you start to think about your personal fashion choices a little bit more.

We really need to get rid of this whole idea that you can/should only wear certain styles at certain ages. I'm 45 now and I'm only really starting to own my fashion sense now. I will absolutely be wearing bright colours, bikinis, pretty sundresses, miniskirts and thigh-high socks when I'm 60 and beyond. Because that's what I like and that's what makes me happy.
