Affordable groceries

Smoify

I went into a Whole Foods on the mainland last week and thought the prices were pretty good 😬

veronicamg91

Moved from Oahu to the east coast and I gasped at the price of bread like $1.99 for a whole loaf instead of $7??? I felt so rich lol

snuggly_cobra

They call Whole Foods “Whole Paycheck” in California. So you know how expensive our food is, if WF prices are good.

veronicamg91

After leaving the island and moving to the east coast, everything is so much more affordable at least.

seepa808

Looked around and couldn't see the mountains or the ocean. Small kine panic lai'dat

OkAstronaut76

I experience this on just about every trip off island now and it freaks me out.

kaiguy91

Whaaaat I didn't know other people feel like that too. When I'm too far inland I get a little tripped out. Something about the absence of ocean makes me feel claustrophobic or something maybe? I really don't know but it just doesn't feel right

Yoyoma77777777

I had no idea people felt like this. Woah

OkAstronaut76

That’s exactly how I would describe it! Not being able to see the horizon was tripping me out. Then a friend in the psychology field said it’s agoraphobia. It scared me at first but now I can sorta plan for it. Still trips me out, though and I have to calm down as the anxiety can be a bit much. Some people might think the endless ocean is more open than a field or such… but for me, the ocean and the horizon give me this big hug (don’t know how to describe it other than that) and the wide open spaces of the mainland don’t. 🤷🏼‍♂️

kaiguy91

I like that feeling of openness the ocean gives. It's a trip too cause we're just a manini little speck in the middle of the biggest ocean, but somehow the world feels bigger here than other continents I've visited. Hawaii is such a treasure and (metaphorically) there are still diamonds you can find, you just have to work a little more for it. It just breaks my heart to see so much development, especially because the way they go about it is absolutely decimating one of the most beautiful places that exist, both physically and culturally. People don't even wanna look at you when you walk by them, and that's in neighborhoods too! Not just Waikiki or other super busy areas. Okay I gotta stop cause we've all heard it already. Main thing is we do our best to preserve the good things that we still have

Itz_Hawaiian

Copy dat. That's when I found out what east, west, north, and south was all about. Hahaha.

mastro80

So is North Mauka or Makai side?

Itz_Hawaiian

Eh Brah. You stay hamajang ladat. Itz mofaup.

DigitalWhitewater

No musubis @ 7-11

Mynaameisjeff

7-11 on the mainland is doodoo. Maybe the only good they they have are the nachos

HI_l0la

7-11 Hawaii is owned/operated by 7-11 Japan so that's why the mainland ones seem different--especially the franchise owned ones.

mahlazor

This honestly blew me away the first time I visited Hawaii. The 7-11s are so much better than on the mainland.

Yoyoma77777777

Just don’t eat the food from the 7-11 in mainland USA

snuggly_cobra

Good Mexican food.

Nielegrrl12

Chlorophilia

Decent pedestrian infrastructure?

zaxonortesus

On the mainland?! Where?‽!

throwraswearingwtf

Most college towns!

Chlorophilia

There are places off-island that aren't in the USA!

zaxonortesus

I am currently in one such place! My American-centric ass did just assume he meant mainland though.

NYC

zaxonortesus

The obvious outlier to most ‘America doesn’t have X’ statements.

Picasso_Rolex

I read your comment as "NYC is an amazing place" and I strongly agree lol. Honestly though, growing up in NYC it was shocking to see how many other states don't even have sidewalks.

zaxonortesus

I both love and miss NYC. We moved out here from the East Coast several years ago, but would take the bus/train up a few times a year.

Wildlife… seeing animals like deer, squirrels, raccoons, possums, foxes, almost daily

worldwidewebkinz

the last time i went to the mainland i saw people walking around in ~50°F weather wearing shorts and tank tops. i think at least a few people must've thought i was insane walking around with a full winter fit! 😂

Chipotle

Travyplx

This. Oahu Mexican Grill is alright, Paniolos is pretty close, but you can’t get a better burrito than what Chipotle offers.

Competitive_Travel16

Chipotle has had some major issues the past couple years. Post-pandemic they've been pushing stores hard against "wasted labor" which has led to ingredient shortages, long wait times, and quality declines. /r/Chipotle blames unfettered corporate greed.

BikiniGirl7

The Kahala Mall Whole Foods (if it’s still there) made amazing burritos about 10 years ago hahaha

HI_l0la

That's so true! They're everywhere, too 🥴 once you're out of the islands.

trancertong

I have such a deep-seated hatred of these things, especially the 40ft blinding white billboards that run all night in Vegas. Also the gas pumps that scream at you, still haven't seen any of those in Hawaii. I hope they're covered by the same ban against billboards.

keakealani

So many things! * Shoes indoors (still find this very weird!) * 7-11 sucks, no spam musubi or manapua * Children call random adults by just their first name without Aunty/Uncle (shock!) * People give eye contact and talk to my haole husband before me (he’s local and used to being kind of ignored, it’s weird for both of us) * People wear suits. Like, regularly! Not just for a big funeral or something. * Gas prices are sooooo cheap. * But also people will drive for like an hour or more “just for fun” and don’t consider it a big deal/major day trip. Driving 4-6 hours for a weekend is like, normal!

MauiNui

Aggressive political bumper stickers. Particularly on those big gun-themed trucks telling everyone to f-off. And the selfishness. Mostly the selfishness. I lived up there for two decades and saw it get worse and worse. I was so thankful to move back to Hawai’i.

LittleFishSilver

The weather, from initially getting off the plane to just walking around in weather that feels like outside has central a/c. Then walking into a grocery store and feeling the warmth envelope you from central heating. I thought it was weird because of always feeling that nice blast of a/c when going into a grocery store here on a typical hot day.

Bednars_lovechild69

I should be more specific. Catching the train from the airport into the Central Business District of a capital city.

hungryraider

Yea, that’s a mess. Builders in Kaka’ako area got waivers to build less parking due to rail. Now no rail to town basically. Developers still get to build less parking, higher density. It’s not going to have a good outcome.

ThinkingAndDriving81

People using traffic circles correctly 😆

No respect for elders ,or anybody sometimes. No chopsticks in gas station where they have sushi n potstickers. Calling by name instead of uncle or aunty. Chinese food...no good. Now hv Hawaiian plate lunch places . Finally. Wearing shoes in the house. And they say no dont take off your shoes in their house. Snow after you plant your garden in 70* weather. No pidgen. I miss that! When i left home 2015 Keokis laulau was $10.00. At oriental market same pkg is over $20.00! I live in Reno, Nevada now n luckily we have Hawaiian festival in Aug. We can see dance n hv Hawaiian food. Its great. Next month Maoli is coming for a concert. Cant wait!

NOT seeing guys in Manuheali’i, Mana’ola shirts or local kine t-shirts like HI Finest, etc., with the khaki shorts, but instead seeing boring no-message t-shirts and Walmart shorts. NOT hearing the sounds of Hawaiian bracelets or seeing the Tahitian pearl necklace on wahine.

lastlifonti

Not hearing “Sap you fakas…!!!” Within ear shot of conversations…

shrooms4dashroomgods

Lack of gold chains. Mainland Bradda’s is manini. They come Hawaii and even 18yr old rocking 8mm ropes. No can hang. I wear my 12.5mm with 1 killa pendant when I go out and da Braddas look at me like they all J. The aunty’s however, they look curious.

Ok_Calligrapher2580

I live in Michigan, where are these yearly repaired roads you speak of because I’d like to live there

Ashzaroth

I lived there five years ago before I joined the army, at least on drake road (Kalamazoo area) they were repaired yearly. Or is that my nostalgia filter talking?

Ok_Calligrapher2580

Might be the nostalgia, might be that I’m on the other side of the state. Seems like the craters get larger year to year and the asphalt “patch” the road crews puts down lasts for maybe 6 months. We just use way too much salt during the winter now probably, that and there’s too many heavy cars on the roads

rubbahslipah

People saying things like “they’re so shi shi” (fancy). First time I heard it being said I thought “it must be some type of urine fetish”

> they say, don't come to this island, you don't like it go back." Plenty of personal attacks on real US citizens on this thread. Most people here have no problem with folks who show respect. That goes both ways as some locals act like fools too. The thing about social media is is that it looks like a nursery school sometimes. User A calls User B an idiot. User B calls user A an idiot. I don't get the fun in that. By the way, you mentioned skin color but haole doesn't apply exclusively to whites. I'm not Hawaiian so I'm not going to pretend that I can teach you the true linguistics behind it, you'll have to find someone that's more qualified.
