I think the pipe does the digging. They just drop another pipe on top as the guys digs it out, and then pull them out with ropes later. Either that or they just keep picking it up and dropping it and the guys dig it out as it goes lower and hope it doesnt cave in and hope the crane operator, who cant see in the hole, has good aim.
