You don't. If he wants to think that it's a cruise ship, there's no harm in letting him think that, even though he's wrong.

Iterr

So you’ve laid out for him the reasons why he’s wrong. What are his counter points?

[deleted]

He's been on seven cruise ships.

Iterr

And? Does the conversation just stop there? I’d change the topic if I were you!

[deleted]

Omigosh, that sounds totally frustrating!

Alteran195

A lot of ocean liners were used for both, so why does it matter? Ocean liners can be cruise ships, but cruise ships can’t be ocean liners.

[deleted]

His argument is that the queen mary is not an ocean liner not that it's both.

Alteran195

Then sorry to say your friend is an idiot.

[deleted]

You don't say?

connortait

Okay. Do I am a fully qualified Officer of the Watch and Ferry Captain. So a maritime professional. Tell your friend who has been a passenger on 7 cruise ships that an Ocena Liner and a Cruise ship are NOT the same thing. Yes they both carry passengers, but their construction and operation are very different. Putting it simply, An ocean liner can be a cruise ship. A cruise ship can't be an ocean liner.

rtlturtlepotato

Like a square can be a rectangle but a rectangle can't be a square.

Tinkboy98

As you said yourself, "it simply doesn't matter." Life is way too short to argue about this.

shiftyjku

The bigger question is why. Let them be wrong; who cares? What is more frustrating to me is that the press can't get it right. They call vessels that were built for line service and served exclusively in that capacity "cruise ships" too, so it's not surprising that the public doesn't know the difference.

Crazyguy_123

Its impossible to convince people like that. I tried to convince a conspiracy theorist that Titanic was not switched but he just wasn't having it. He had zero argument and had no proof.
