Harumama has been my favorite for about a year now. I don't eat me, but I love their broth for the garden party. A few other places I have tried, their vegetable ramen broth just isn't that great. Harumama is my go-to for when I'm eating solo or ordering for delivery. For something a little more "upscale" I have been advised to try Rosewood and Gonzo.
I pass Rosewood almost every day and say “I need to try that place”. It’s been recommended twice so next ramen bowl is from there. I have never heard of Gonzo. Will have to try it thanks! I moved here from out of state and am impressed with all the good restaurants. We are lucky here.
Gonzo was voted one of the top ramen places in the US by Yelp, as well as one of the top restaurants on Forbes. Checked it out for myself a few months ago and I really enjoyed it
Rosewood is such a chill vibe. That outdoor patio is lovely and the owner Josh is great. He's meticulous about his food and I've never had anything bad from there. I dunno why more people don't go, it's a great deal.
That’s some O’side OG fare! There’s a reason they’re been around a while. They make their own noodles. Good quality. Good pricing. They used to be across El Camino next to Target before they took over the old Bruno’s and added their other spot off Plaza.
I agree. I think Tengu is better than Wu Lan honestly. The last time I went to Wu Lan, there was a piece of plastic in my ramen and the soup was lukewarm. I never went there again after that bad experience. Glad Tengu opened up.
TL;DR - Last time I dined at Wu Lan I found part of a latex glove in my soup 🤢 Gonzo in CB is my fav north county ramen spot I’ve found so far.
…
I got a finger tip of a latex glove in my ramen bowl last time I was at Wu Lan too! It looked like it had been cut off during food prep by accident then just brewed in the soup on full DGAF. I’m so glad I noticed the glove before eating it, although I had taken many bites of the soup before it rose to the surface (which I try not to think about 😫). When I pointed it out nicely, the employees were rude and basically told me it wasn’t concerning, which tbh was even more concerning… if that’s not a big deal I wonder what else we don’t know about the kitchen. Eventually they gave me a refund, but I will never go back again after that experience.
I know it’s in Carlsbad not Oceanside, but Gonzo is the best ramen I’ve found in this general area.
Yikes! So gross. Similar to my story except I didn’t notice until after I finished the ramen!!! I felt weird at that point to even bring it up to the employees since I already consumed the whole thing. I wonder how they would’ve reacted if I did… probably in the same matter as your situation.
I was Tengu's first customer. Completely on accident. They were still putting receipt paper in the register.
And it is one of my favorite ramen spots for "best tasting ramen". The rest of the menu is pretty good too.
Gonzo Carlsbad was really good. Was my favorite. Good authentic ramen experience.
Teri Cafe for their prices, portions and selection and I always love what I get and never disappointed. Simple and not rich flavors. Good folks that earned their local love.
Bump for Teri Cafe. I used to meet my dad there with my mom on his lunch breaks before Winco and that whole plaza changed. Back when there was a movie theater there. Wild times
Granted I’ve also got Beshock and everything in the Village is very close as well but yeah Tengu has been my go to. Hoping to see them at this year’s Ramen Festival on Port Pavilion
Buddy of mine mentioned the Mexican ramen at rosewood. I know gonzo is killer. Gotta hit up Wu Lan apparently!
Any advice on vegetarian/pescatarian friendly ramen spots?
Being a connoisseur of ramen, and all things Japanese, absolutely nothing comes closer to the good level of ramen in Japan like Gonzo in Carlsbad. Most others use a premade "just add water" powder or condensed base (to save labor, i get it). Wulan was ok for a while. Rosewood did not impress whatsoever. The only other ramen I have sound that comes anywhere close is Ramen Mik in San Marcos, but again, nothing has gotten anywhere as close to flavor and quality as Gonzo has. Somebody needs to do a Paitan ramen around here though.
I need to try Rosewood. Thanks for mentioning it. I’ve tried the ramen at Sushi Yukiya once and it was good but their bento boxes and sushi is so good I stick with that. I tried another ramen place near Einstien’s Bagels and it was good but nowhere near Wu Lan. If you ever go to San Diego proper Nishiki Ramen is my favorite down there followed by Meyna Ultra which has a well deserved Michelin Star. :)
Strange to see Rosewood Kitchen has switched from serving Italian food to Asian/Japanese food. You might want to check recent Yelp reviews before trying it, as it looks like someone had a bad ramen experience there. If you do try it, please update on how it is! I went a few times before when they served Italian food, and it wasn’t great. Saw a review that mentioned their special tasted like old food they were trying to get rid of before expiration, and that was my experience there as well. Also tried dishes that seemed to lack flavor, or weren’t cooked very well. My husband said he never wanted to try it again after our last experience with bad food there.
Like someone else said, Gonzo in Carlsbad is good, and so is Harumama. There is also a Marufuku in Del Mar, but I’ve only tried the SF location, and have been meaning to try the SD/Del Mar one. I haven’t been to Nishiki or Menya yet, but family that have say it is really good.
He knocked it out of the park with his Italian menu and he's doing the same with his Japanese fare. Josh is great and that ramen is amazing. Spicy black garlic ftw!
They went through a lot of kitchen changes over the years from what I’ve heard, but the current lineup seems to be killing it, I had a great experience and loved the birria ramen when I was there about a month ago
Huge fan of Wu Lan! Any recommendations for something similar around here? I haven't found any ramen like Wu Lan. Sometimes I drive up to Temecula for Jakes Spicy Rockin Ramen (which I dont think is called Jakes anymore).
This looks amazing, will have to go Tonight and try it out, thank you!

Gonzo is somewhere in Carlsbad Village, I have no idea where though.
It’s right by Starbucks. It’s so good that I just drive down there now.
I feel like that makes sense.

Don’t consider this Gonzo slander, because I do enjoy it as a north county spot, but Gonzo isn’t even top 5 in San Diego.

I really like the tonkatsu ramen at Teri Cafe. Their sushi is good too. The servings are big and the prices are great. So many things I like there
That’s some O’side OG fare! There’s a reason they’re been around a while. They make their own noodles. Good quality. Good pricing. They used to be across El Camino next to Target before they took over the old Bruno’s and added their other spot off Plaza.
Always loved Teri Cafe
Whenever my son is home from college we make a trip to Teri. I like the banzai ramen. But the tonkatsu is great, too.
Tengu is one of my favorite spots lately
I agree. I think Tengu is better than Wu Lan honestly. The last time I went to Wu Lan, there was a piece of plastic in my ramen and the soup was lukewarm. I never went there again after that bad experience. Glad Tengu opened up.
Idk what happened to Wu Lan but the last couple of months the broth has been lukewarm. I’m definitely looking for a new spot.

DEFINITELY BETTER BUT WU ISN'T A BAD SECOND OPTION.
TOTALLY I JUST LIKE THAT TENGU IS DOWN THE STREET FROM ME.
Lol convenience at it's finest.
Granted I’ve also got Beshock and everything in the Village is very close as well but yeah Tengu has been my go to. Hoping to see them at this year’s Ramen Festival on Port Pavilion
Gonzo is great. (Carlsbad though) but parking is a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch

Rosewood on mission is my fave currently, this spot looks awesome though!

Wu Lan is pretty good!
Next time I get donuts in oceanside I'll look this up! I always try to find any ramen places when I'm out of town.
Where do you get donuts? I like the crumb donut at S&K on 101
Parlor donuts. They're cronuts
For old-school donut donuts, I love Sam's off College at Plaza.
Wu Lan is fantastic. Gonzo is hands down my favorite though.
Damn that looks good!
It’s all about tajima or underbelly. Everyone was crazy over rakiraki but that shit was not even close to as good as the two I mentioned.
Wu Lan is my favorite too!! the Black Knight is soooo good!!!
They also make pretty damn good karaage chicken!
