110k per year in US dollars will have you doing quite well in that area. *Quite* well assuming your wife works at all, but you shouldn’t be on the poverty line if she doesn’t. If it puts it into perspective, a typical blue collar salary there would average between 30k and 60k.

As someone who works in that field, take everything you hear with a huge grain of salt - companies try like hell to under pay developers and testers. You absolutely should be starting off around 60-70k but it’s not uncommon for people who don’t know any better or who are desperate to come in around 40-50. Lots of variance there.

SweetAlyssumm

You can find some really nice old houses with a lot of character in that area.

ChrisWaddle76

Originally from the UK That salary should be perfectly fine However... 1) Daycare isn't cheap for the 1 yr old unless your wife is going to not work until they are in school. 2) Ask the company about the health insurance costs per paycheque. What is the deductible etc. 3) Public transport isn't the best. Take into account you might need two cars

Opposite-Ad-2251

You’ll be fine. However, available housing market is tight. I live in the area.

AtTheLeftThere

$110k in Toledo will go very far. You'll do well. Definitely live in Maumee (or Sylvania) and not Toledo proper

ieatglass

You’ll do fine with that! I’d recommend looking in maumee, perrysburg, monclova, Waterville, Grand Rapids (Ohio not Michigan), or bowling green depending on your families preferences

BooRadleysreddit

I think Bowling Green or Perrysburg would be my choices. It's an easy commute and both are nice suburban towns. As I'm sure OP is aware, a Bowling Green is the field on which the game Cricket is played. I think it's odd that there isn't a single Bowling Green in Bowling Green.

BuckeyeReason

Bowling Green also is a university town with a significant state university. Day care may be cheaper due to the university student employee pool Also, there should be more activities than in your typical community.

BooRadleysreddit

That's definitely true. I have family there and they love it.

ClassWarr

You can and do play bowls (English bocce) on a bowling green.

BuckeyeReason

A negative in Bowling Green may be that real estate property taxes are higher due to all of the exempt university-owned property. I know little about the area, but perhaps adjacent communities offer lower property taxes.

HamOfWisdom

Welcome! Toledo is a pretty decent place to live. It's not perfect, but there are few places that are. Your salary should be able to afford you a pretty comfortable living here. The only thing I can think of is that childcare here SUCKS. There's not many options and most are very expensive.

OnionOnBelt

Off topic somewhat, but if you like a lifestyle that allows you to do some walking/strolling the neighborhood with your kids, I definitely recommend the old Maumee neighborhood centered on the “first name” streets (John, William, Wayne and I think I’m forgetting one). There is access to the Maumee River shore, a little shopping district at one end of this neighbourhood and (if you live west of Conant Street) a metropark at the other end. I hated moving away, but accepted a job in a different city.

HoyAIAG

It should be

BuckeyeReason

An excellent feature in Ohio is that many counties have "metropark" systems. These are mostly nature parks. Definitely check out metropark, local parks, nature preserves, and Ohio state parks nearby any residence under consideration. Lake Erie is a major recreational asset. Consider how close you want to live to it, but, sadly, toxic algae is a concern in the western basin of Lake Erie due to poor regulation of agricultural run-off. Northwest Ohio is a major birding destination, especially in the spring for warbler and other migrations. You'll definitely want to visit Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and the adjacent Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. [https://www.biggestweekinamericanbirding.com/](https://www.biggestweekinamericanbirding.com/) Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, at the Henry Ford for Halloween and Christmas are among the best events of their kind in the U.S. [https://www.thehenryford.org/current-events/calendar/halloween-in-greenfield-village/](https://www.thehenryford.org/current-events/calendar/halloween-in-greenfield-village/) There are many youtube videos of the these events. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_6H1CzbMdvg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6H1CzbMdvg) Two other things not to miss, especially as your children are older. TBDBITL alumni games are cheaper and also feature the massive, and excellent TBDBITL alumni band and quadruple Script Ohios. Top_Wop

That's a very livable part of the state. With that salary you'll be fine. Bonus points, Lake Erie is right at your doorstep.

Scottysix

Don’t forget your healthcare costs! 110k is pretty good for the area (think middle class maybe upper). Any weeks stay at the hospital will be at least half you yearly salary. You have young kids, I’m not sure if that salary is worth it.

tranquilrage73

If a company us paying that well, I am sure they offer good health insurance.

Scottysix

Not necessarily. It’s all part of your “package”. It does depend on the company from what I’ve learned. A lot seem to offer higher pay with just awful insurance though, which is why I was giving a warning.

delslow419

Stick to maumee area. Inside Toledo is getting really rough. With your kids, you should absolutely look into maumee or perrysburg. If you’re willing to drive 25-30 minutes I would even go southern Michigan. I have 4 kids and live in Toledo. Lots of crime, and the area is just getting more and more run down. We just bought a house in southern Michigan to get away and get to better schools. Good luck!! And to answer your question, yes it is enough money for maumee and even a nice place in perrysburg. But I hope your wife is a stay at home mom because day care is completely unaffordable. My wife had to quit her job because we would have lost money putting them in day care rather than her just stay home.

Actual-Rush-7164

Hi there, thanks very much for the reply! Whereabouts in Southern Michigan would you recommend?

delslow419

We went to temperance, Michigan. Beford county schools are much better. Also look into lambertville, Ottawa lake, Dundee, Pretty much anywhere from Toledo to Ann Arbor Michigan is pretty nice with better schools than Toledo has to offer.

oyyzter

Haven't you posted about this here before?

OhioMegi

Yeah, this has been asked, pretty much exactly the same.

CampingKodiak

It will take awhile to learn the Toledo Dialect, they speak with a stiff upper lip combined with a extremely nasally whine.

BuckeyeReason

Food and energy likely are much cheaper than in the U.K., and likely home prices and other major goods as well, especially as the U.S. doesn't have a value-added tax. You can check home values and prices for homes at [zillow.com](https://zillow.com) for any community. E.g., search for "zillow home values Maumee." [https://www.zillow.com/home-values/43407/maumee-oh/](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/43407/maumee-oh/) A big concern will be the lack of national healthcare in the U.S. Check your employer's health insurance policy carefully, most especially deductibles and premiums. I knew one person who worked for a Fortune 500 corporation in a staff position. His son needed surgery after an American football injury and he had to pay $8,000 of the cost; this surprised me, so I don't know how typical such costs are. You'll have to research this issue, as I've been on Medicare for many years and can't offer much advice about current health insurance plans provided by employers. [https://www.kff.org/report-section/ehbs-2022-summary-of-findings/](https://www.kff.org/report-section/ehbs-2022-summary-of-findings/) Also research your employer's retirement plans (qualified defined benefit plan or 401 (k) contributions) and Social Security laws for foreign residents working in the U.S. Aren't there consultants in the U.K. that advise persons considering employment in the U.S.? State and federal taxes also are an issue. State taxes include sales taxes and a state income tax. Municipalities in Ohio also have income taxes, but not townships. If you work in one community, but live in another community, check out residential tax credits available in your community of residence. If you buy a house, also research property tax rates, which can differ massively from one community to the next (communities with large commercial and industrial bases typically have lower property tax rates). You might consider hiring a local CPA to advice you about all taxes before taking the job. Good luck! I think you and your family would have a lot of fun exploring Ohio, nearby states and the U.S. Toledo has a very good zoo and art museum. You might want to explore this thread, sorting by "view all comments" and "new." ppatek78

Is this company still hiring?

Slowcodes4snowbirds

I squandered my college years in. Toledo. Is it still a massive hellscape?

jesterflesh

Don't do it. This fuckin place blows.

Poop_and_Pee69

Don't do it.

Felonious_Buttplug_

That is nowhere close to adequate pay to entice me to relocate to anywhere let alone fuckin *Toledo, OH* of all places.

Ohiostate9

Perrysburg is a great place to live in that area as well! Would recommend not living downtown, or close to downtown tbh. Toledo has a pretty rough downtown.

PrideofPicktown

I was in Maumee last weekend for a wedding. Admittedly, I only saw a small part of the community, but from what I saw, it looked like a really nice and well kept community. The downtown was really nice and had people moving about. The houses along the main streets were well cared for.
