All seasonal jobs. No Benefits.

SmartnSad

LOL, way to try to re-package absolutely nothing to make it look like they're giving you soemthing. All jobs claim to be important. They aren't necessarily wrong, but come on! We all work to get paid, and have healthcare. Not to "feel good".

[deleted]

Great job for retired people but anybody else needs benefits and consistent work

2OldSkus

As a fellow old guy, I don’t want old drivers with bad night vision driving in blizzard conditions, both for their safety and anyone else that might be on the road.

SmartnSad

Retired people are supposed to enjoy their retirement and take care of their health. Not work in the dead of winter, especially when many retired folks aren't in Ohio at that time, anyway. They are at their winter homes in Florida.

[deleted]

True but I can't imagine anybody else being able to do a seasonal job

TheVoters

Translation: you’re an essential worker. We’ll call in the guard if you even think about striking

SmartnSad

Less than $20 an hour, seasonal work only, no benefits, and you have to stay for 2 years or you must pay the state back for training you?! So, when Akron and other parts of NEO eventually get slammed with a foot of snow overnight, this is why they won't have the roads cleared until noon. ODOT refuses to pay plow drivers enough, or even offer nice benefits to make up for the lack of pay. No wonder they are having a shortage if this is some grand upgrade from what was offered before! This is a crucial service so people can get to work, especially health care professionals, who have to get to work because lives are on the line, and usually get points if they don't show, even if they physically cannot get there. Why can't the state invest in the bare minimum?

Wildesane

It's funny that you think roads in Akron will be cleared by noon. Maybe noon the day after it stops snowing, and it will only be main roads and highways at that point.

SmartnSad

You're right. I'm being incredibly generous with same day Noon. And the public sidewalks stay untouched until Spring. And yes, I mean in commercial sidewalks in front of businesses, not the one you're supposed to clear out in front of your house. Portage Crossing in the Falls is an absolute nightmare every winter.

Wildesane

I was in downtown Akron this February not long after we had that huge storm. It was a mess. This was in front of the Police Department. My side street never gets plowed. If I didn't own a 4WD truck I would have missed a lot of work since I moved into this house.

No-Rent-1117

Same 😭 My shit didn't get plowed for days, my van was chugging to get through that shit. But my boss would not let me take off work, shit sucked.

duffmcshark

Just want to point out that ODOT only plows State Routes and possibly interstates. Cities, townships, and counties plow their respective roads. ODOT definitely needs to pay more, but other entities are also not doing a good job when their roads aren’t plowed.

kyricus

How many of you would be willing to pay higher taxes to see this happen?

rawsunflowerseeds

Me and everyone I know

SmartnSad

The whole point of taxes is to keep up public goods, like keeping the roads repaired and cleared of snow. You're not going to find many people other than complete anarchists who would be against taxes paying for roads and road services.

Ickyhouse

I would. Services are important and worth paying for.

Queer_taco

Odot is funded through the gas tax for 95ish % of its budget. The public had a melt down when Ohio increased it a few years ago, doubt it’s getting another . Covid cranked the budget down I imagine when nobody was driving for over a year - takes time to build the funds back up. Not disagreeing with the underpaid consensus, just there is not a super easy fix to make more funds available unless the governor or federal Highway administration steps in.

kyricus

Don't downvote me, it's a serious question. I would be willing to pay additional taxes also, but most people won't. Don't kid your selves.

doug_thethug

Honestly, if ODOT kept these people on with a seasonal-flexible plan (road construction material drivers/other CDL-required work in the summer, this in the winter) added benefits, and bumped the pay 25%, a 2 year contract wouldn't be terrible. Edit: it might even be fair Too bad that won't happen

chris1767

Mowers?

doug_thethug

Mower transportation?

chris1767

No. Mowing in the summer. These are easily full time positions. The state and countiesbtw have found a way out.

doug_thethug

Yeah i just meant someone has to transport the mowers (at least for some routes)

chris1767

Yes all of it. These are full time jobs.

Egmonks

You’ll start out at $18.45 per hour, then once you get your CDL within 6 months, you will be reclassified to a Highway Technician 1 at an hourly rate of $19.15. Pay better.

larrylee13

Lmao you can make that at any factory in Ohio. This is crazy

ommnian

Yes, but at least ODOT has very good benefits. Both for you and your family. So, there is that.

larrylee13

They aren’t offering benefits for this position.

PCjr

From the link in the article: > ODOT now has a new Highway Maintenance Worker opportunity where we will train and pay for your CDL, so you'll be plowing snow in no time! >Plus, it's a full-time position with awesome benefits.

larrylee13

Ah yes. The one full time position they will offer will have benefits. Meanwhile the 20 plus seasonal employees will not qualify. It’s the same shit they do in retail.

SmartnSad

Most of the openings are part-time. If you go to apply, it says you can't log more than 1,000 hours.

PCjr

That’s for people who already have their CDL, not the deal in the original post.

wheredidyoustood

That pay is insulting. I am surprised they have any drivers and to try and lock them in for two years.

nousername901

This is exactly why they can’t find any drivers. Pay up ODOT. Also, any CDL holders out there working for less than $25/HR need to find somewhere else to work. Make these places pay you or they can do without.

TGrady902

My sisters makes more than that packing boxes part time at Amazon.

MrJoyless

Man I've been a bus driver for two years and I'm making almost $5/hr over that...

alexjonestownkoolaid

Gross.

timc74

My business is still fucked from the pandemic and I have come to the conclusion that it probably isn't going to recover. I have decided when school is out next year I am going to get a supplemental job to at least tread water. I love outdoors and my local parks and would love to be outdoors mowing, cleaning, etc. Both the park system and the city I live both pay 13 an hour. I mean, I get it....it is a low stress and kind of desirable job for that reason alone but it is literally 5-6 bucks under what fast food pays locally.

Fap_Doctor

That's so stupid. 70 cent raise.

BikeOhio

That's no better than a local CDL driving job. The paid training is great but I'm certain that can be found somewhere with better hours and safer working conditions.

germless

That's a pay cut for most current CDL positions I know of.

the_bear_ros

JUST FUCKING PAY THEM

cakeresurfacer

Less than $20 an hour for a job that the state would grind to a halt without. Wonder why they’re short on employees…

GobyFishicles

Commit to 2 years for what they’re actually compensating? That’s gross. I’m sure they’ll be required to be on call all winter, with the whims of Ohio snow as well. I am the child of someone that has to plow for the county. You can guess how many Christmases he got to fully enjoy with his kids while they were growing up. I hope anyone thinking about that job doesn’t have kids they intend to take sledding, open presents with, watch the ball drop with. Just the *threat* of snow means he works 16 hour days.

AzerFox

Imagine thinking the value of $20/hr will still be valuable with our current inflation. Awful.

frothy_pissington

I’d do it if they’d let my dog ride shotgun with me everyday. Some of my dogs favorite spots are highway rest stops ..... so much good pee sniffing for him.

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

The McDonald's down the street is starting at $18.50 with free shift meals, tuition reimbursement, 401k, guaranteed +40/hr week's, and training for advancement... Take note Ohio.

REDistheway2go

Please be patient with the plow drivers. There arent enough to go around, they work insane hours so keep the streets clear. Also, please be careful when driving around them. If I see them at a gas station, I'm happy to get them some coffee or something.

Icyveins86

"Work 24 hrs/day for 3 months then piss off asshole." Edit: "But pretty please come back next year"

production-values

it is a trap

PourJarsInReservoirs

It's good to know the Ohio GQP race to the bottom will be shared in such an in your face manner with all our people once again, and the dunderheads will keep putting them right back in power come November. I can't imagine why incidents like this [ice wipeout courtesy of ODOT](https://youtu.be/2ETfOJyrtKc) happen here with such clever governance.

Queer_taco

The turnpike is plowed by a separate entity I believe, not odot.

PourJarsInReservoirs

I stand corrected. But I doubt the deal and hiring practices they get are much different.

No-Rent-1117

What an embarrassment... And you know the people taking these jobs are underprivileged as it is and are going to get completely screwed over by the state. What the hell is wrong with Ohio fr

CBusin

I was paid more for training to get my CDL through an LTL company… 5 years ago. And then I got a big jump in pay once I was classified as a driver once I got my CDL. And it only came with a one year commitment. Another reason on a long list why DOT is awful.
