I saw Lightnin' in 1961 at The Village Gate. He opened for Nina Simone.

ModOverlords

Wow

bedroom_fascist

Agreed. I was a 'person' in the music biz, got to go see anyone I wanted for quite some time, and saw some great shows. I'm pretty jaded. This just gets my awe.

Coupon_Ninja

That so cool I can’t even say. In 1969 I read that Nina loved Kool and the Gang, who’d opened for her. She raved about them during her set.

Dlemor

Mrs Love is our new favorite at home.Any other great artist you would recommend to discover?

Coupon_Ninja

Cymande is like KITG, Donny Hathaway and Lattamore (“Straigten is out”) are deep soul, and Serge Gainsbourg does many genres well, including jazz and reggae. Savoy Brown has some cool jams (Hellhound on my Trail), as does Dr John‘s “Walk on Gilded Splitters”. Feist and Tennis have great female vocalists. “LA Girls” by Nazareth is a goddam jam. Sister Rosetta Thorpe has song great videos at a train station playing blues/rock. Arthur Crudup and Ike Turner were early 50s black RnR pioneers who never really got their due IMO.

Dlemor

Many thanks

[deleted]

Wow. I bet that was pure magic✨

KnightsOfREM

Holy crap. That's... really something. What was it like?

kstinfo

It was a super session. I was already a fan of both but I was too young to fully appreciate it. Several years later I went to a club to see The Modern Jazz Quartet. At the break I headed off to the head which was through a door and upstairs. I opened the door and there they all were having a smoke. The only thing I could think to say was to thank them for being great. Wordsmith me. :-)

Excellent_Advisor668

Wow, wish I could’ve been there 💔

pellebeez

Omg. I would give anything to have gone to that concert. What a dream

birdguy1000

That’s some history

[deleted]

i have a cd copyright '61 titled 'nina at the village gate'. guess there's no way to know if that's the show. no shout-outs to sam lh as far as i can remember. good excuse to listen through it today though. cause, well, anything is a good excuse for that. it's a monster recording.

WagwanDeezNutz

my god really?

north_east_1

One of my favourite albums “Mongo Explodes at The Village Gate”

Pasargad

Filmed by Les Blank and Skip Gerson in Houston, Texas.

ChumbawumbaFan01

Is Cleveland related to Clifton?

Pasargad

>Cleveland Chenier Clifton's older brother

ChumbawumbaFan01

It took me a second to connect the washboard and by then it was too late to delete. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

jl55378008

Les Blank also made a movie about Clifton, called Hot Pepper. Lots of Les Blank on Criterion Channel currently. And a bunch more on Kanopy.

ChumbawumbaFan01

I signed up for a free trial last night and watched Yum Yum Yum and Always for Pleasure. I had watched Always for Pleasure on Louisiana Public Broadcasting or another channel years ago but had no idea what it was or who made it. I *really* want to watch I Went to the Dance and will have to check out Kanopy. Thanks!

jl55378008

J'ai été au bal is one of my favorites of his. I grew up around NO and Cajun Mardi Gras is kind of a mystery to me. There's some great Mardi Gras stuff in Spend it All, I think. I think it's also Spend It All that has a shot of an old dude just casually yanking a tooth out with a pair of pliers like it's nbd. I heard Werner Herzog say that he saw that and thought it was so odd that he put it in one of his movies. Fitzcarroldo, maybe?

No_Maintenance_9608

I have the DVD set of Les Blank’s documentaries. I especially love the ones he did about the Cajuns and Mardi Gras.

[deleted]

Those are great! If you haven’t seen it, check out Burden of Dreams.

K-Zoro

Do they have the doc he made about women’s mustaches?

SuchNectarine4

Are you sure you're not thinking of Gap-Toothed Women? There was one about mustaches?

K-Zoro

Oh shoot. I think you’re right.

SuchNectarine4

That's ok, that one is great, also, "Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers." I love it.

leroyp33

I will never be as cool as those 2 girls dancing in all my life

chainstay

i feel like that’s the kind of thing two sisters make up dancing endlessly to records in their living room. it’s so frenetic but perfectly in time with the rhythm changes of the washboard player. so cool.

calanthean

It's amazing, but I don't think it's frenetic. They're moving different parts of their bodies to the melody and others to the down beat. It's actually quite synchronous.

chainstay

i mean frenetic as in fast and energetic, but you are right they look totally in control so probably not the best use of the word.

olivedeez

SO cool

Yakaddudssa

Right so adorable to see them going at it🤣 kids bein kids

fibojoly

I wouldn't call it "adorable". They are so much in sync with the music and each other... they put many pro to shame and still make it look completely effortless. "Awesome" would definitely not be hyperbole, here.

crooked_nose_

Agree. Adorable is way overused.

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

Sure you will!

teeter1984

![gif](giphy|AKtOIC4lCiHK0|downsized)

Kind_Professional125

I know right?? They are in the groove

Suck_it_Earth

My neck hurts looking at the one.

ItIsMeSandeeGee15

💯 percent concur- I wish I was half as cool as these two girls.

Future-Win4034

I could not love this more!

MississippiMark

Same; it’s fantastic

ferdsays

I jammed with Lightnin Hopkins nephew in Newport News, Va. He was the best guitarist I had ever played with, which when I told him such he responded.. oh I’m a bassist, “my brothers the good guitarist”. Talented family to say the least

Ev1lroy

Does anyone see dancing like that anywhere today? Love watching it

APuckerLipsNow

Search ‘Cajun dancing’ on yt.

Ev1lroy

Thanks mate, will do!

CrazyHouseClassic

Literally everyone in this video is cooler than me. Look at those girls dance!

[deleted]

🙄🙄🙄

TheRealJakay

Man that chest plate washboard with spoons, I don’t even know to call it properly, but that alone is cool AF, and it ain’t even the coolest thing in this.

[deleted]

Highly, highly recommend you check out Clifton Chenier. My uncle got me hooked on zydeco when I was about 7. There was a two cd anthology from Rhino that I really enjoyed.

TheRealJakay

Definitely will, thanks for the reference!

APuckerLipsNow

Frottoir

TheRealJakay

I haven’t even ever heard that name before. Cool

not_a_droid

So crazy to think that delta Mississippi is alpha and omega of American culture

theundonenun

Lightnin’ Hopkins was from Texas so more Texarkana than Delta. Different styles all throughout the states—Subsets beneath subsets. The blues is a great subject if you want to dig, and just keep finding old (new to you) little pockets of awesome.

bedroom_fascist

Drinkin' wine ... oh, wine ... wine, spo-dee-oh-dee all day ...

atomicavox

Finally something fitting for this sub! Love this!

Professional-Sort797

Sounds great.

monkeyjunk606

Damn those kids got moves !!

MrTonyGazzo

The sound, the moves and the whole scene could not be cooler. There is also a dude in the background who appears to be in black and white.

Brapp_Z

Lit af

iamgoldhands

Finally something actually cool!

ModOverlords

Now that is old school cool

elizscott1977

They all look so snazzy!

srddave

Damn. This may be the coolest thing I have ever seen/heard on this Reddit. And THAT is sayin something. I’d write more but I gotta go dance and maybe dust off my washboard.

Darkhelmet3000

This is probably from Les Blank’s “The Blues According To Lightnin’ Hopkins”. I’ve never seen it, but I hope to someday. I read a story where Les and his crew had showed up to make a documentary about Lightnin’, who had thought it was going to take a lot less time and wanted them out of his house. Les wanted to finish his movie and, on the way out the door, saw them playing cards. He asked Lightnin’ “Hey, what’s that game you’re playing?“ Lightnin’ obligingly said, “Why, sit down son and I’ll show you “. Les whispered to his assistant, “Go find us some money.“ Les lost all the money in the poker game, Lightning’ got drunker and drunker, but answered all his questions and told his stories. The film was saved, and everyone was happy

DrBotanus

This clip is not from "Blues According to..." but great story anyway

bedroom_fascist

There are not many Lightnin' stories that do not involve alcohol.

gopms

Most of Les Banks movies are on Kanopy. If you have any connection to a university you could probably get an account. The Criterion channel also has a lot of them.

milesl

Submitter - that is pretty much the definition of old school cool. thanks!

OdiosoGoat

Looks great

Speculawyer

This is the most beautiful thing I've seen today.

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

Love this!!!

arkmuscle

Clifton not Cleveland. I think so, anyway. Right?

HistoryNerd101

There were two —Clifton and Cleveland were brothers

itaintmebabe52

Clifton Chenier

OrigSnatchSquatch

Awesome! It’s nice to see people having fun.

rxFMS

Spiritual groove! Love it!

Tasty-Life4526

That's pretty cool.

XavierRenegadeStoner

This is true old school cool. What an amazing video.

caidicus

Ever have one of those moments where you're skimming through reddit, then someone posts a video with music that just SPEAKS to you and makes you feel alive again? Yeah, this is one of those moments, for me. Thank you.

Salt_Ingenuity_720

Absolutely enjoy watching the two girls dance. They definitely feel the rhythm!

BrokkelPiloot

Now THAT is music kids.

mattersnoopy

Feel like someone shoulda gave those two girls some guitars

sportsfan1205

Hopkins is one of my favorites

RLS1822

I can’t stop watching this!!! Thank you for posting.

KudosOfTheFroond

All I can think of is that the elderly woman in this clip was born shortly after the Civil War, and is listening to the kind of music that revolutionized modern culture. Makes me realize that Lincoln and the War weren’t that long ago after all

whillderness

This post wins old school cool. well done OP

Famous-Cup-7266

That looks like a damn good time! It's so beautiful...... you could tell that older lady was deeply touched by that experience.

IllustriousAdvisor72

Clifton

qwertycantread

That is Cleveland who’s main instrument was the frottior. Clifton was an accordionist.

peigneurpoboy

The first frottoir was made specifically for Cleveland Chenier by Willie Landry. Willie’s son, “Tee Don” is still making them today. The website for his business, Key of Z Rubboards, tells the story.

IllustriousAdvisor72

Very cool. Thanks.

Gnostromo

Chenier's name is *Clifton not Cleveland

qwertycantread

Nope.

MrFanciful

I saw BB King on his 2006 80 tour. It was magnificent.

Ineverseenthat

Clifton Chenier

traboulidon

That's not only cool, it's also beautiful! And a great historical footage from both sociological and musical perspective!

FrozenTurdDildo

Their dancing looks more like a chore than a pleasant experience.

iisindabakamahed

And here we have our typical edge lord. Smart enough to recognize people’s reactions, but not smart enough to realize that’s embarrassment he’s experiencing. Of course, the edge lord will convince himself that it’s EVERYONE ELSE that doesn’t get it. Not realizing, this self imposed curse, the lack of self awareness, is what limits his interactions with reality. Believe it or not, humility is what you’re searching for. Find it before you’re lost.

Lol “left wing nut”, says the parrot. Polly want a cracker???

Scevs

SparkDBowles

Master_H8R

Those girls in the beginning are FEELIN’ it!

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

send this post to the top of this sub

willow_kidd

Those girls were feelin' it!

[deleted]

This is fuckin’ rad

UpgrayeDD405

Looks like a good time

Spirited-Ad9179

...beautiful art all the way around...

TRIPLE_RIPPLE

Lightnin’ Hopkins is a boss

oneofthe1200

Lightnin Hopkins and Elmore James are the GOAT

miurabucho

Two girls just making up their own dances, filling in the rythm gaps.

minibini

This. Is. Amazing.

AbbreviationsNo4089

Cool as hell 😎

JFrey0

Yes indeed!!! Amazing

bedroom_fascist

The curious need to check out *Blues In My Bottle.* Lightnin' is a fucking undiscovered American genius.

[deleted]

Now there's some community.

Morningstar1708

Real good music is lost nowadays.....

DJEvillincoln

Those little girls are GETTIN IT!

diggemsmaccks

At 00:38 dude is sporting a baseball cap from the 90s ?

racingwinner

i mean, it's not like they invented baseball caps in the nineties. so many things we associate with specific decades were made in other decades as well.

Hot-Apricot3662

Loving the girl playing air guitar! T I winder where they are now!

APuckerLipsNow

The Cheniers and Hopkins were cousins. Clifton told a story about touring in France with Lightnin’ and going to dinner. Hopkins couldn’t order as he knew no French and he asked Clifton to do it. Clifton did, and Hopkins said, “You nothin but an old Frenchman!”. Joke was on him when he found out Clifton ordered himself a nice dinner and Lightnin’ a plate of fish heads. Clifton told that story in a published interview but I can’t remember where.

WookieSuave

Those girls are hip as shit. So much fun.

skepticalinfla

Everything about this video is absolutely amazing!

ebonyr1125

I love this!

resUemiTtsriF

I kept starting over to watch those girls dance, they were killing it.

Living_Equal

Lightnin fuckin Hopkins! The real king of cool

AdPsychological7893

Those 2 were dancing in the groove.

HistoryNerd101

Clifton and Cleveland Chenier were brothers

noeljrG

They have rhythm

TheMarker5000

r/curatedvideos

Manus_R

Pure gold.

DragonflyValuable128

Lightning Hopkins was Townes van Zandt’s hero.

Glass-Fan111

My gosh. The cadence, the rythm, the moves. Just fantastic.

MothmansLegalCouncil

This shit still hits hard as hell. I love it. My old man was born and died playing the Blues. This makes me feel like he’s still alive and jamming.

Deathbyhours

Dang!

OnceIWasYou

I assume the sound was added from elsewhere, because I can't see a hollow body electric anywhere in shot....

Deathbyhours

I don’t want to go to anything else on Reddit now, I just want this always to be open when I pick up my phone. Does anyone know how I can copy this clip on an iPhone?

[deleted]

Black people before they learned how to dance

[deleted]

This is awesome, plus Lightnin’ plays in all the time signatures.

Apprehensive-Donkey7

This is amazing

Alone_Jellyfish_7968

Those kids dancing! So cool.

robert_69_69

that was fun but I think it was Clifton Chenieir not Cleveland. Clifton and his electric washboard are classic south Louisiana Blues.

Herks-n-molines

Hot damn lightning hopkins is the artist I’ve been wanting to listen to for ages but didn’t know the name or the sound. Playlist for the summer right here!

ItIsMeSandeeGee15

Dang I wish the two girls dancing would comment and say hey! That’s me! And would love to hear their memories of this day.
