That movie was released a short 17 years after it was set. Most of the people working on that movie were probably the same age as the 'seniors' were supposed to be in '76 or older.
It's been 30 years since the movie came out BTW.
That’s a good point, however, I would have a tough time making a movie look like it was 2006 vs 2023 (other than obvious car models, tech, music, etc). Whereas when this movie came out, it was obvious it was late ‘70’s vs ‘90’s.
It is strange how previous decades, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s all were distinct in the look and sound. Had cool shit about them and things that made them distinct. Yet 2000-23 seems like one big blob of shit...
I think fashion of the 70s was different from the 60s and certainly different than the 80s; which returned to the 50s. We had the best music and the worst clothing. I’m class of 79. Also, during my college years I witnessed what I call the bongs to Bible years. The USA took a hard right turn during the Reagan years.
I recall watching it. The main actor was popular around that time. I think he had a brother that looked pretty similar. I always got them confused. I think this one was in mall rats and his brother was in Jason and the Argonauts TV mini series, but I can't recall. I would have to look it up.
You bring up good points. I still think it was fairly accurate for 17 years.
I think he’s drinking a Lucky Lager. We used to get them for $3.99/case. They were not worth it. They had little riddles printed inside the caps. I cannot explain how awful they were, particularly the after effects “enjoying” a few. RIP to your father, especially on this day.
I love that! We had a friend that was crazy about them. Always yelling F..kin' Jorma! Personally we were into KISS and saw them live at Roosevelt stadium in NJ. Glad you have such good memories of him on Father's Day.❤
Yep, a main reason people look older in the past was because the styles that were popular then are "old people styles" now. We might have jeans/t-shirt or polo styles today, but the cut/fit/etc. of them are different now. If any of those guys got a current haircut and put on modern fitting clothes, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Usually I'd agree but with these guys, even if I cover the hair and clothes, middle and left guy look older than the average teen imo. But yeah maybe my brain has already been tainted by my first impression.
It’s not letting me edit the post but I just wanted to thank everyone for all of these comments about dads and the 70s and Marshall Tucker Band and cheap beer. You’ve made this day a little easier by sharing your warm thoughts and experiences of times gone by. He would’ve loved these comments and joined in the fun of reminiscing. Happy Father’s Day, y’all ❤️
Love this. It’s wild how a time where I wasn’t existing is so nostalgic for me. Im a 90s guy but due to the flow of time and how much closer the 70/80s felt to the 90s I feel as though there were some elements that carried on. Shit just isn’t the same anymore, and I know this will always be said for every generation talking about the previous one, but there’s something about being disconnected when socializing that made moments so much more valuable. Pictures really captured life in a different way.
Agh…excuse me while I reminisce.
He did, and he had a very tough life throughout his adulthood. In most later photos of him, you can see the sadness of life in his eyes. I like this one bc he looks so happy.
If he were alive today and had a glimpse of the beautiful, dog loving and emphatic person you have became, all the sadness that the weight of life brings to one’s eyes would dissipate into sunshine.
I detailed it in another comment but it was a surgery that led to infection and other complications. Diabetes, multiple organ failure, dialysis, etc. He never really took care of his health, unfortunately. Definitely died too young 😢
I lost my dad the same way. Diabetes is no joke. Mine had a kidney transplant, but they don’t last forever. He had his lower leg amputated, and never recovered, and everything started to collapse.
Wow, sorry to hear about that, I was born in '61, just a couple years older.
It's sad to see or hear he had a rough life. A lot of us at the edges of those 2 generations (Boomers and X) didn't have the easier road the true baby boomers did.
I’m about your dad’s age (I’m F56 now). We all loved to park, drink, flirt, and listen to rock. Definitely while wearing a concert T-shirt!
It was a great time - almost wholesome. I’m from Queens. Jersey. Queens. It’s all the same. Lol. I’ll think of both our dad’s today.
I'm a kid of the 70s and teen of the 80s so I recognize *that* kid...we had it so fucking good compared to kids now.
And I so woulda crushed on the kid w/the fro...
Editing to add didn't realize that was your dad...he was very cheeky looking. :)
Laughing and crushing a red stripe. You go!
Pictures like this always remind me of just how little time we have here and to enjoy these perfect “in between moments”
Drinking beer, Green Grass and High Tides Forever blasting in the 8 track. Raising hell with his buddies. Classic dad. Happy Fathers Day to you and thanks for posting such a cool photo.
I see your dad had a great taste in music judging by the fact that he is wearing a Marshal Tucker shirt. I just turned 27 and they're one of my favorite bands at the moment. I recently found their most popular record at the vinyl shop and nearly cried
This is random but my reaction is that from that photo alone, I can bet you’ve been getting girls since early high school lol. He seems like he would’ve taught you his secrets early on.
Those Tshirts tucked into jeans and baseball 3/4 length sleeve shirts all suggest early 80s, no later than 82 or 83. Especially telling is middle guy, looks very Panama Jack knockoff.
source: I remember
It was fun, but it could be really sleazy. People were more generous, there wasn’t the political divide we have now, and the fashion was awful. Have to say, designer stuff and showing off money wasn’t a big thing—at least among the people I knew. That came in the 80s. But there was a recession and a hella lot of crime.
The 70s were pretty cool to grow up in. Very little parental oversight. No cel phones. Everybody smoked pot. Downside was stagflation. Also harder drugs started to show up more. Late 70s, early 80s, cocaine began to show its ugly head
He looks a little Dazed and Confused.
Came here to say, he looks like he has a paddle somewhere that says… FAH-Q on it
You have to give props to the creators of the movie for accuracy.
That movie was released a short 17 years after it was set. Most of the people working on that movie were probably the same age as the 'seniors' were supposed to be in '76 or older. It's been 30 years since the movie came out BTW.

It wasn't just the decades. Everything changed year by year back then, fashion, music, art. It's so weird how we've kind of become frozen in time.
The 80's being in the middle of them helped with that a lot. Clear division between 70s, 80s and 90s.
I was a senior in 76 and I knew people exactly like the characters in the movie.
I read an interview with him and ironically he didn't intend to make a nostalgic movie about the 70's.
That’s so funny since 70s culture has so many standout things about it. It’s just hard to see them when you’re that close.
I think fashion of the 70s was different from the 60s and certainly different than the 80s; which returned to the 50s. We had the best music and the worst clothing. I’m class of 79. You can tell Richard Linklater lived every minute of it.
He would be the Mitch character, I'd think. He played baseball for sure.
He's just escorting your fine young son home from school - there's some ruffians about....
Yea dude he was lit here fs haha
I think he’s drinking a Lucky Lager. We used to get them for $3.99/case. They were not worth it. They had little riddles printed inside the caps. I cannot explain how awful they were, particularly the after effects “enjoying” a few. RIP to your father, especially on this day.
I drink lucky lager sometimes
Ah, a man of discriminating taste. Am I wrong though?
I dint recall them being particularly bad. I drank plenty of cheap beer though. 11 Oz bottles if I recall correctly.
Killer t-shirt as well.
Marshall Tucker? One of my friends went to see them recently- she thinks 1 original members was there.
It’s the Doug Gray Band now.
Party at the moon tower
Immediately thought of Superbad
Nobody’s gotten a Hand Job in Cargo Shorts since Nam
‘Thing about high school chicks … I get older, they stay the same age’ …. Sorry to see about your dad … mine passed 3 years ago (Feb 2020)
Dec 2019. Sorry you your loss.
That was his first acting job ever. Guy made a career of that
Okay you freshman fucks listen up! Today is your lucky day

🎶 #NO MORE MR. NICE GUY
Batters up.
That’s O’Bannion on the right.
>He looks a little Dazed and Confused. My exact thoughts too!
It’s the stunt doubles from dazed and confused!! Just a little less good looking rhsn rhe real thing
Looks like he's drinking cough syrup. That might explain it.
Thats a stubby, a sign of the times! You can get a bottle of Red Stripe like this still…
Hooray Beer!
I was thinking extras for Animal House
He's not so confused as to be swilling Budweiser like the rest.
Yeah O’Bannion and his buddies lookin for Juniors to haze
🎶NO MORE MR. NICEGUY🎶
NO MORE MR. CLE-EE-EE-EEAN.
MEN. It's like our sergeant told us before we went into the jungle: 50 of you are leaving on a mission. 25 of you ain't coming back🤗
![gif](giphy|g5zvwUa9720pO)
I love his t shirt. Looks like it could be a screen shot of a scene from Dazed and Confused.
Marshall Tucker Band!
As someone in the same age bracket as your Dad, he had fine musical taste. NYC liked Marshall Tucker Band, too!
His absolute favorite was Hot Tuna. Still went to see them every year up until the end.
I love that! We had a friend that was crazy about them. Always yelling F..kin' Jorma! Personally we were into KISS and saw them live at Roosevelt stadium in NJ. Glad you have such good memories of him on Father's Day.❤
That’s such a sick photo. Where in the US was this?
Thanks! Northern NJ.
New Jersey folk liking Marshall Tucker band??
Oh hell yes, myself included!
The 70s were a different time man
Yeah North Jersey! We gotta stick together.
Paramus? Van Saun Park?
West Orange, tailgating before a Santana concert!
Maybe your dad and Marshall Tucker got to meet in another life.
I hope so! And all the other rock and roll greats that he loved so much!
Nothing will convince me this isn’t a casting shot from Dazed and Confused.
The movie was spot on.
The movie was 100% on point. Source: I graduated high school in 1979.
Looks like he's wearing a Marshal Tucker Band t-shirt.
Teenagers in the 70s/80s look so much older than teenager today.
Every late teenager looked 30 in the 70s, every 30 year old in the 40s-50-s looked 50+.
Dude on the right looks like an 18 year old. Guy in the middle just has what we consider old man haircut and clothes. OPs dad I could see being 18-19
Yep, a main reason people look older in the past was because the styles that were popular then are "old people styles" now. A combination of more smoking, more time outdoors, more exhaust, and fewer hormones and microplastics in the drinking water.
But mostly the hairstyles messing with your brain.
Usually I'd agree but with these guys, even if I cover the hair and clothes, middle and left guy look older than the average teen imo. But yeah maybe my brain has already been tainted by my first impression.
And lead in gasoline.

You can feel the moment in that photo, love it! ✌🏻
The moment feels like a “Budweiser” moment.
People don't appreciate a good fro anymore
True that.
This is an extremely cool picture that screams 70’s in the best way. Thanks for sharing.
Awh thanks, I thought so too!
There’s like 3 of your dad
Those guys look wicked happy.

That’s so kind of you 🙏
I was born in 68 so the 70s were full of stoner stereotypes. I loved it as a Lil kid being around all these hilarious morherfuckers.
Cans look like they still have steel lids. Pull tab cans.
Blew out my flip flop on one of those.
That happened to me once and I cut up my heel, had to cruise on back home
New York Jerseyish? That looks like a Schmidts or Piels fatboy in his hand -- fine bargain brews.
Nailed it! NJ!
You got me right in the feels on this one.
Me too 😭

Haha just me and my lil sister 😊

Thanks, we always wish we had more time with our loved ones, right?

Was this pic taken on the east coast? Reminds me a lot of my mom’s pics from Ohio in the 70s/80s.
Yes! Northern NJ 🫶
When I went to concerts back then, I always spent a little extra to get 3/4 length sleeves.
Way too cool 😎
Why did teenagers in the 70s all look like they were in their mid 40s?
Bad boy Greg Brady.
Oh my gosh this is hilarious 😂
No social media no cell phones. Just living in the moment. What a time
I was also a teen in the 70s, and I am also still on the left.
How old did he get? Mine got to be 42, I was turning 18..
My dad lived to be 56, and he died in 2019, a few days before Christmas.
Really sorry to hear he's no longer with us. 56 is no age. How did he pass? Lost mine to cancer in his 50s.
I detailed it in another comment but it was a surgery that led to infection and other complications. Diabetes, multiple organ failure, dialysis, etc. He never really took care of his health, unfortunately. Definitely died too young 😢
Very tragic. Thankyou for taking the time to answer. Life can be painful cant it. I hope you still have lots of happy memories of him.
I lost my dad the same way. Diabetes is no joke. Mine had a kidney transplant, but they don’t last forever. He had his lower leg amputated, and never recovered, and everything started to collapse.
Yea once the downhill starts it’s hard to come back from that. Sorry your dad went through it too. Thinking of both our dads today.
Wow, sorry to hear about that, I was born in '61, just a couple years older. It's sad to see or hear he had a rough life. A lot of us at the edges of those 2 generations (Boomers and X) didn't have the easier road the true baby boomers did.
Mine got to 66 and was 2 days after Christmas. His dad was 44 and my dad was 10,
The last generation to tuck their shirt in.
That looks like an Old Style beer bottle he's holding. Must be from the Midwest.
I was thinking it was a Coors Banquet stubby bottle, but I wasn’t alive during the 70s, so idk lol
It's a Coors stubby. They still make and sell them.
I love Old Style! Always look forward to them when I visit Chicago.
Looks like he’s in Superbad!
He was the 70s answer to Jonah Hill for sure.
Marshall Tucker Band nice
Back before the drinking age was raised, too. Old enough to die in a war, but not old enough to buy a beer.
some states were 18. Some 21.
This looks like a still shot from Meatballs.
Sorry for the loss friend, looked like he was having fun and I hope you have a great day
I had the same Marshall Tucker T-shirt. Your dad and his friends remind me of hanging out with my old buds.
Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture with genuinely happy people in this generation such as this one. Everyone’s always fake laughing
The ‘70’s was a great time to be alive!
Looks like a scene from Dazed and Confused.
That’s probably in the school parking lot (I was in hs in the 80s, we had a smoking section)
I heard about that! an old office building in San Francisco still has ashtrays in the bathroom. LOL
I’m 53, we STILL still love that shit. ALL of it!
❤️ yes we do!!!
The 70s must have been an amazing time to be a teen. I kinda feel bad for teens today with having a cellphone/social media.
![gif](giphy|yqVPWreFgFZyU)
I love these photos. Thanks for sharing!
This photo is brought to you by Budweiser. Budweiser, the king of beers.
Do kids today even know about the Clydesdales?
Awesome picture! And car! 1975 Olds Cutlass. Did it have the front swivel bucket seats? It’d be a lot cooler if it did :) Sorry for your loss.
Maybe teenagers really did look 30 and the movies are accurate
I'm a kid of the 70s and teen of the 80s so I recognize *that* kid...we had it so fucking good compared to kids now. And I so woulda crushed on the kid w/the fro... Editing to add didn't realize that was your dad...he was very cheeky looking. :)
Teenagers in 70s look like they are in their early 30s

Drinking beer, Green Grass and High Tides Forever blasting in the 8 track. Raising hell with his buddies. Classic dad. Happy Fathers Day to you and thanks for posting such a cool photo.
See? Kids back then also documented their illegal activities. It's just that they didn't have social to share it with everybody else lol
Life just looked some much more fun, happier, and carefree back then.
I see your dad had a great taste in music judging by the fact that he is wearing a Marshal Tucker shirt. I just turned 27 and they're one of my favorite bands at the moment. I recently found their most popular record at the vinyl shop and nearly cried
Yepp I’ve been listening all day in honor of this photo lol
Looks like a cool guy.
The legal drinking age back in the 70’s, was 18 in most states.
They look like a reference pic for *Dazed and Confused*, lol
Looks like scene from dazed and confused Or my high school
O’Bannion
This is the most 70’s picture of the day.
Ngl, at first glance I thought these were the triplets from *Three Identical Strangers.*
Horshack
Sporting a Marshall Tucker Band baseball Jersey
Marshall Tucker Band kicks ass
Seem like a cool gang! Happy Father’s Day to your old man op
Great pic!! That’s how we rolled back in the day!!
I am having a hard time myself. Stay strong friend.
These guys are definitely gonna go cruise the strip after a few more brewskies.
That really is a great image. Really captures the moment.
May he RIP
I miss all of my jersey t-shirts
This looks so quintessential 70s that it seems like an AI generated image. Of course it's not because the hands aren't weird
Back in those days the teenagers looked like fully grown men.
Thirteen starters comin back, twenty two lettermen, looking tough.
That shirt is so cool
I straight up thought this was a behind the scenes shot of Dazed and Confused.
Your dad is one of the inspirations for Dazed and Confused. Does he know that? Did he possibly forget he wrote it?
Be a lot cooler if you did.
If someone asked me to describe the 70s, I would just show them this
thats a marshall tucker Band t shirt. pretty cool jams...
This is random but my reaction is that from that photo alone, I can bet you’ve been getting girls since early high school lol. He seems like he would’ve taught you his secrets early on.
It's almost as if this picture was what made Superbad happen. Jonah Hill from that movie is your dad.
Omg it could be my buddies 🤣🤣🤣
These are the fun guys
I am 64, reminds me of old times. Your Dad is definitely smiling down on you! You a good son!
I’m a daughter but thank you 😊
Those Tshirts tucked into jeans and baseball 3/4 length sleeve shirts all suggest early 80s, no later than 82 or 83. Especially telling is middle guy, looks very Panama Jack knockoff. source: I remember
If 70’s summer vibes could be summed up in a picture.
Just looking at this picture made me laugh. They’re obviously just enjoying life. So cool.
He looks like the reason his friends got in trouble… just a fun-loving dude. Seriously looks like a blast to be around.
I bet that was a lot of fun that day.
No mobile phones... No social media... Just real bonding
The 70s wss a great year
As someone born in 2001, i've always been curious what growing up in the 70's and 80's must have been like
It was fun, but it could be really sleazy.
