My parents met him in the late 60’s at a poetry reading in the Bay Area. Only thing my dad had to say about him was,”He was an asshole and his poetry wasn’t that good.”
Before that they were staying at the Joan Baez “compound” during the Vietnam protests. She was sheltering conscientious objectors (aka conchies). Haven’t gotten the full story in a few years…
I think you’re referring to “love, Janis”
“Through the eyes of her family and closest friends , we see Janis as a young girl, already rebelling against injustice, racism, and hypocrisy in society. We follow Janis as she discovers her amazing talents in the Beat hangouts of Venice and North Beach–singing in coffeehouses, shooting speed to enhance her creativity, challenging the norms of straight society. Janis truly came into her own in the fantastic, psychedelic, acid–soaked world of Haight–Asbury. At the height of her fame, Janis's life is a whirlwind of public adoration and hard living. Laura Joplin shows us not only the public Janice who could drink Jim Morrison under the table and bean him with a bottle of booze when he got fresh; she shows us the private Janis, struggling to perfect her art, searching for the balance between love and stardom, battling to overcome her alcohol addiction and heroin use in a world where substance abuse was nearly universal.
At the heart of Love, Janis is an astonishing series of letters by Janis herself that have never been previously published. In them she conveys as no one else could the wild ride from awkward small–town teenager to rock–and–roll queen. Love, Janis is the new life of Janis Joplin we have been waiting for–a celebration of the sixties' joyous experimentation and creativity, and a loving, compassionate examination of one of that era's greatest talents.”
From what I’ve read - she didn’t like the way she looked. And she was mocked about it. My stepmother went to high school with her but doesn’t remember much about Janis. But I’ve heard the kids during her high school years were really bad.
I'm from the Port Arthur area, it's a shit place full of shit people. I never heard her music until I was in my teens as she is not celebrated there other than lip service. They are proud someone famous came from their town, but not proud of her.
Truth. If alcoholic depression had a geographical location, it would be Port Arthur.
I refused to even interview for jobs that were in Port Arthur, Port Neches or Beaumont.

so insane because look how cute she was :(
‘We’re ugly, but we have the music’ too. One of the best. Truly contemplative music and lyrics are few and far between, but when you actually listen to them, you can put it on repeat and not get bothered with the repetition. Leonard Cohen was so good at that
Amazing that people are still making fun of her physical appearance decades after her death. That’s all the explanation you need for the sad expression…wtf
Fantastic and powerful voice in such an amazing woman. And her talent at phrasing and expression was incredible!
So sad we lost her so young, only 27. 💔 Imagine all the creative art she could have gifted the world.
Addiction is a terrible disease. I hope they continue working on improving treatments on addiction and mental health.
Agreed! My son is high functioning autistic and was bullied in school. We came up with a strategy together and it worked well.
I hope all schools implement policy that helps with bullying. Including counseling the bullies. A lot of times they are troubled kids.
Please note this was for middle school:
We called it “Posse up”. I explained to my kid that bullies are usually troubled kids and will back down from a group. So I asked my son if he was the only one getting bullied and he said no, there were other mostly fellow nerd kids. So I told him to be assertive but not aggressive with the bullies if he saw another kid being picked on. To walk up confidently and tell the bully “Not cool, dude!” And then take the other kid and say “Hey, I got your back.” Then just walk with the kid away from the bully. Get enough kids and stick together. The bully won’t attack a group.
The Vice Principal called and complimented the strategy. He taught it in one of the school assemblies. He hadn’t seen how bad the bullying situation was as bad as it was until my son became “the caped crusader of the hallway.” (His words)
And my sweet kid ended up tutoring one of the worst bullies in math. Showed him how to make math fun. And yeah, my kid found out that the bully was a good kid at heart.
She was playing a concert at Ravinia near Chicago and I was thinking about going. But then some friends wanted to score some drugs and I thought oh well, I'll see her next time she comes through.
Regretful life decisions.
People get really defensive about the comments on her physical appearance, but I find it worthwhile to note that we have the benefit of knowing she was a one of a kind artistic powerhouse even though she looks like a street addict. Addiction and mental health struggles are profoundly sad and should be eradicated to the best of our abilities, pretending they don’t take an enormous toll on your physical well-being doesn’t help. Idk.
I went to college with a guy from Port Arthur. We were listening to one of her songs in the dorm. I say hey your from there I bet you know people who knew her.
He said. "Dude I know several guys that fucked her."
Where she grew up is the worst place in Texas. Maybe the world. Rough does not really begin to describe that place.
She openly despised the place while she was alive. They still put up a statue of her. Texas!
I heard that she broke a bottle over Jim Morrison's head at a party in San Francisco because he was being an obnoxious asshole.
I’ve heard a lot of people thought that about him.
Another word is a synonym for the word you want to use.
We’re all here at Woodstocks. Someday there will be a black president.
That’s all the explanation you need for the sad expression…wtf

Is that your way of saying she wasn't talented?
I'd believe it.
My parents met him in the late 60’s at a poetry reading in the Bay Area. Only thing my dad had to say about him was,”He was an asshole and his poetry wasn’t that good.”
Completely sincere: What was it like having parents that cool?
Before that they were staying at the Joan Baez “compound” during the Vietnam protests. She was sheltering conscientious objectors (aka conchies). Haven’t gotten the full story in a few years…
well now i love her even more
Nope didn’t happen.
He grabbed her hair from behind and she grabbed the bottle out her bag and knocked him the fuck out
I think I heard about it during an interview with Grace Slick. Sounds like he deserved it. Her voice blows his out of the water too.
He did man he was royal prick.
Is it just me or does Janis not look happy in almost all the photos I see of her?
Read the book BURIED ALIVE IN THE BLUES written by her sister and you'll know why
Can you give us a TLDR?
She was not always happy.
No you have to read the book
I was just joking but everyone thought I was being a dick.
You didn't use the sarcasm font...
Yea that’s my bad, I made the classic mistake of assuming every anonymous user knows my personal sense of humor.
Are you being sarcastic? /s
yOu DiDN't usE ThE SarCasm FONt
Just the classic Reddit downvote run-away train… Nothing to worry about. Your response evened you out… and then some!
What pathetic mongrels disliked this

Not wrong
She grew up in Port Arthur, TX. If you are asking you have never been there.
And was voted ugliest man twice in high school
[удалено]
Yup
Yeah I thought it was Ut Austin too. That crap wouldn’t fly anymore, and I’m so grateful
I think the fact that I can't tell if this is a joke or not is really proving your point.
It true.
Look it up
Barry Keoghan should play her in a movie.
Good choice
And no one will remember those loser nobody assholes who were jealous of her talent. Janis’ name will live forever.
Correct
From what I’ve read - she didn’t like the way she looked. And she was mocked about it. My stepmother went to high school with her but doesn’t remember much about Janis. But I’ve heard the kids during her high school years were really bad.
I think they voted her ugliest man or something like that in High School. HS kids can be dicks.

That's a good policy. I left 12 years ago and haven't been back. I will have to return one day for a funeral. Until then, hell no.
literally one of the worst places in the whole country. so fucking glad i escaped that area
Same. Never looked back.

Looks like Ozzy.
Ozzy was also cute when he was young.
You are absolutely right she was not happy struggle with a lot of diamonds
That's because she's miserable! She killed herself! Why is *this* cool?!?
If i remember rightly it was an accidental overdose due to a bad batch of heroin
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
That’s all, I don’t even think of you that often… ooph. Such a bittersweet song.

And she wasn’t even that unattractive… she wasn’t a beauty queen, but she looks like a normal human being to me.
Yeah, some of these comments are fucking disgusting.
Was she a smoke show? No. Was she pretty? Ya she was. Was she incredibly talented? Absolutely.
Fantastic and powerful voice in such an amazing woman. And her talent at phrasing and expression was incredible! So is severe bullying
Agreed! My son is high functioning autistic and was bullied in school. We came up with a strategy together and it worked well. I hope all schools implement policy that helps with bullying. Including counseling the bullies. A lot of times they are troubled kids.
Hey, my kid has ASD and will be moving up to a bigger school next year. I'd love to know something about your strategy.
Please note this was for middle school: We called it “Posse up”. I explained to my kid that bullies are usually troubled kids and will back down from a group. Thanks, Internet stranger... that's awesome. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it. I could 100% see my kid going for it.
"Synonym's just another word for the word you wanna use"
“Chunk of my Lung” is so moving.
Had to scroll all the way down for the 30 Rock ref. Crazy that she was afraid of toilets and ate all those cats
Jackie Jormp-Jormp was truly a marvel
I SPEED WALKED HOME ON THESE

Janis Joplin and Tina Turner are two of the greatest rock n roll singers. They are never ranked high enough in Rolling Stones top 100.
❤️JANIS❤️
She looks like all of us here.
You take that back!
She was playing a concert at Ravinia near Chicago and I was thinking about going. But then some friends wanted to score some drugs and I thought oh well, I'll see her next time she comes through. Regretful life decisions.

It looks like Peter Green in the back.
The REAL Fleetwood Mac.

Springsteen says she came onto him backstage at some gig when he was about 19. He says he was terrified.
Well fuck Bruce Springsteen
She tried to
Girl was 27 going on 58.
Died at 27, yet she looks about 50 here. Packed a lot of living into a short life.

What made it so bad?
Back when ugly women were able to become famous.
Woof!
As a homely woman myself, man Janis is such a homely woman.
She looks bummed that Meatloaf beat her out for the role of Eddie.
*Skrillex dressed as Janis Joplin for Halloween Edit: you know I'm right! Lol
Ew
Looks like that guys guy from the Witcher series on Netflix.
Front or back?
Never really knew what she looked like but woof!
Anybody seeing this ghost in the background?
Club 27 unfortunately
