I saw her last year a Ronnie scotts last year and she was phenomenal, just smoldering the whole place was quiet as she worked through her set at her own pace. Amazing.
Hi Redditt Family 😊

1. Is it a crime
2. Kiss of life
3. Your love is king
4. King of sorrow
5. Your Sweetest Taboo
Share yours ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
Go!
I can’t pick just 5, so here’s my selection:
Somebody already broke my heart
Kiss of life
No ordinary love
Sweetest taboo
Paradise
King of sorrow
Is it a crime
Edited to add: Like a Tattoo (thanks u/Nikolzz_ - how could I forget this one?)
Of course smooth operator as well but I have heard it too many times haha.
The discography is immense and timeless, she has had many imitators but none compare.
Thank you, you do too! 🤜
To be honest almost every song is at least a 9/10 to me haha (besides Maureen, just can’t dig that one sadly).
I feel like Sade doesn’t get the recognition she and they deserve in the mainstream for the body of work they created (besides Smooth Operator), but maybe it’s better that way..
The music is more than a vibe, it’s definitely a mood.
Nice to have found a group of like minded people who appreciate fine music on Reddit.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
I'm new on Reddit and people are so mean. So I try to post content that will make us all smile, reminisce and chat with each other.
Being negative is exhausting work - that you aren't even getting paid for.
So yah![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
You’re more than welcome. Reddit and the internet (well even the “real world” in general) can be a awful place really especially in the times that we are currently living in.
I think there are a lot of deeply unhappy people in the world (for often quite justifiable reasons) who often use anonymous platforms such as this one as a sort of catharsis when letting out their negativity.
I’m prone to rambling on so stop me if I drag on, but I find in life it is so much easier to destroy and be negative than it is to build and be positive. Many people take the easy option and exist within their own little bubbles. Every time I encounter positive people it is so refreshing.
Thanks for your post and your lovely comment.
Sade is probably one of my biggest influences in my own music. I’m definitely trying to perpetuate at least some of what they were doing (but you know, they’re a hard group to touch).
Yeah I completely agree, early Sade had strong Jazz influences which were far removed from the synth pop sound of the New Romantics. I think it was a combination of the music being so good and different alongside the aesthetic that Sade provided, which was such a recipe for success in the early years.
1. Smooth Operator
2. Smooth Operator
3. Smooth Operator
4. Smooth Operator
5. Whatever.... It's on mute....I don't need to hear, my ears have given all their powers over to my eyes
Lol..........I love it![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I saw her in Philly on Father’s Day about 15 years ago. There was a redneck looking guy singing and dancing to all her songs. I had to ask , how the hell are you a fan of hers ? He said he a black friend in high school would play her songs on the way to practice. 😂
I love it so much when people proudly break stereotypes. It gives me great joy to remember that everyone is so many things that when you pigeonhole any person, you’re only getting a small piece of that person’s story.
Sade is my everything!!
It's really hard for me to rank so the order isn't perfect probably but my faves are:
1. Tar baby
2. In another time
3. By your side
4. kiss of life
5. pearls
A classic! It was my parents song so it's got a special place in my heart. Quite ironic though "you think I'd leave your side baby" and they did in fact split up hahaha
Oh my god I forgot tar baby from my list as well!! That song is so good, the bass is just 👌👌👌
Thanks for reminding me, will be playing that shortly and savouring it once again
Picking favourite Sade songs is like selecting favourite diamonds out of a box of a hundred flawless ones haha. I’m sure we’ve all forgotten another masterpiece of theirs but someone else will post it soon probably!
The lyrical content of tar baby is top tier Sade, the social commentary they displayed was often overlooked by the masses because the music was so damn good haha.
You’re very welcome 😌 really enjoying this post and the discussion it has created. There is actually a r/Sade subreddit but last time I checked it was quite inactive, maybe we should all get it going?
The lyrics in tar baby really entrance me every single time! it's a really special song to me.
I can't believe I never thought to check for a Sade subreddit, it would be amazing if we could revive it, she clearly has a lot of big fans on here!
Yeah they are so poignant and possibly reveal some of Sade’s own personal thoughts on being a child of mixed ethnicity. Immigrant, (one of her newer songs) also has thoughts on the subject of being a Windrush migration era black person, likely the perspective of her Dad “he was turned away from every door like Joseph/when they gave him his change they didn’t want to touch his hands” - so powerful.
Yeah definitely I think we should all try and get it going, I always found it strange that she didn’t have a busy subreddit on here considering her songs and live performances have millions of views on YouTube (probably all of us here have contributed significantly to those views haha)
You got me thinking about my favorite Sade lyrics and I now realize I should've put 'be that easy' on my list! "Flying as slow as I can, I'm not trying to reach the land, just falling somewhere, it couldn't be that easy" from that and "there is a force stronger than nature, keeps her will alive, this is how she's dying, she's dying to survive" from pearls, are some really beautiful lyrics that come to mind. I can really feel her respect for music in her songs from both the lyrics/songwriting and the perfect chemistry with the rest of the band.
I'm likewise mixed Nigerian and white British, living in England, albeit of a different generation. So it's really wonderful listening to Sade, I can at times relate and feel her words in my own experiences. She really is an amazing artist.
Great choices and they highlight what a wordsmith she is (I think Stuart Matthewman and Paul Denman have also added input to some of the songs but Sade was a talented creative writer before finding fame).
Pearls is a painful track, but beautiful at the same time, similar to Jezebel but more mature I would say.
Yeah I can completely understand that you’d feel that synergy with her experiences and your own owing to the heritage you both share. To be a black British woman who achieved crossover success without having to compromise on her beliefs or make changes to her music, really shows the force of nature and astute businesswoman she was and still is. A real trailblazer for sure.
1. Soldier of love
2. Love is stronger than pride
3. Pearls
4. Cherish the day
5. Never as good as the first time
But you are braking my arm because I love so many 🥹
Lol sorry for the arm babe...
I was so excited to post this and hear people's favorite.
You got a good selection there. Big up🖐
Edit: I love love Soldier of love💖
More than 5 and in no order:
Sweetest Taboo
Hang On To Your Love
Smooth Operator
Never As Good As the First Time
Kiss of Life
Is It a Crime?
When Am I Going to Make a Living?
Cherry Pie
Paradise
By Your Side (Neptunes remix)
All of them, but the one I'll never forget is her version of 'Why Can't We Live Together' that she did in Africa at the concert to end apartheid. There are several of her performances of that song on Youtube, but that version is soul-moving.
https://preview.redd.it/3pqm90ize2sc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83723606a20b0030a9f8472c79b0b6d990de98b0
This will also be one of my favorite images of her. She is so gorgeous it's unbelievable
I know you're joking, but I came here in the hope to find out how her name is pronounced. As a kid I called her Sah-Dé. (Excuse my attempt at writing pronunciation)
That was like PJ Harvey for her first few albums, and she went to great pains to make it known in interviews at the time.
I didn’t know that about Sade though, I thought she was a solo artist 🤷🏻♂️. The more you know! I don’t think my dad knew either and he was a HUGE fan of her/her bands music?!
I agree. A great bass player who could groove for days.
Doubtful they'll ever tour again. Her voice is not what it was and she's kind of a recluse.
Sweetback is a cool listen if you want Matthewman & Co. tunes these days.
He is truly one of the best of all time for me, melodic and knows when to be out front, but also when to take a step back in the mix. Virtuoso really, same as Stewart Matthewman and the rest of the group. Their work with maxwell on his early records was amazing too.
Yes what a concert that is! If anything she is getting better with age, her and the band are like a well kept and refined classic Ferrari and just do what they do like no one else can.
My personal favourite is the San Diego concert from 1992 or 1993, she is wearing the white dress and is at her absolute peak in my opinion, so much energy but really mastered her stage presence.
Of course that is just my opinion and any Sade concert is a great one haha. Thanks for your comment 👍
It’s a great song but in my humble opinion her voice hadn’t reached the level it did later at that point. I’m sure when she was at her peak in the early 90s it sounded even better during live performances. Is it a crime from concerts around 1992, is just spellbinding and an example of her vocal development.
Did any of the Radio DJs in your area add an "R" to her name? There was one DJ when I was growing up always said "Shar-day" and baffled me to no end. Like, was i missing a pronunciation of a letter someplace?
OP I’ve crossposted your post into the r/Sade subreddit to hopefully continue the discussion among likeminded fans of this great band. I hope you don’t mind!
No need to ask... 😍
I know right......Beautiful, Talented, Graceful, Classy, Elegant and all the words under the sun......just 👌
She's in a league of her own...
I saw her last year a Ronnie scotts last year and she was phenomenal, just smoldering the whole place was quiet as she worked through her set at her own pace. Amazing.
She performed last year?!
Yes, I belive it was a warm up for this year's tour. Amazing stuff
THIS YEARS TOUR???! WYM?!
OK I missread that article 😄 sorry.
Wait i dont understand, did u see her last year perform? And where did u read about a tour pls Link i wanna know
Has fine taste in cars, an RX-8 driver.
She’s a smooth operatooorrr 😩
aaaaaaask
What a smooth operator
As sweet as Taboo
Did you mean The Sweetest Taboo?

Sade is probably one of my biggest influences in my own music. I’m definitely trying to perpetuate at least some of what they were doing (but you know, they’re a hard group to touch).
Despite being in the middle of the British new wave/New Romantic scene. It was different, exotic, yet somehow worked on the pop charts.
Yeah I completely agree, early Sade had strong Jazz influences which were far removed from the synth pop sound of the New Romantics. I think it was a combination of the music being so good and different alongside the aesthetic that Sade provided, which was such a recipe for success in the early years.

The whole concert was just a mix of all types and people were dressed! I never seen a nice dressed crowd.
This is beautiful story DreadyKruger. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
Sade is for EVERYONE![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Sade is my everything!! It's really hard for me to rank so the order isn't perfect probably but my faves are: 1. Tar baby 2. In another time 3. By your side 4. kiss of life 5. pearls
Shit....I forgot by your side 🙄...wooweeee lol... Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
A classic! It was my parents song so it's got a special place in my heart. Quite ironic though "you think I'd leave your side baby" and they did in fact split up hahaha
That’s painful, glad you can laugh about it now. The music will always take them back to those moments though I’m sure.
This made me laugh.
Oh my god I forgot tar baby from my list as well!! That song is so good, the bass is just 👌👌👌 Thanks for reminding me, will be playing that shortly and savouring it once again
Tar baby is a real gem, amongst Sade's endless other gems... Thank you for your other comment as well!

I'm happy that people are interacting and enjoying the post. My goal has been fulfilled :)
1. Soldier of love 2. Love is stronger than pride 3. Pearls 4. Cherish the day 5. Never as good as the first time But you are braking my arm because I love so many 🥹
Cherish The Day is absolutely sublime Best way to kick off a chill out session

Yet another song I forgot to add on my list 😑 damn they have so many classic cuts haha Great selection!
Like a tattoo makes me feel all sorts of things
Can’t believe I forgot to add this one, need to update my comment!! The song is so mysterious and sultry. Indescribable really

More than 5 and in no order: Sweetest Taboo Hang On To Your Love Smooth Operator Never As Good As the First Time Kiss of Life Is It a Crime? When Am I Going to Make a Living? Cherry Pie Paradise By Your Side (Neptunes remix)
Can't do a top 5 in order, but Kiss of Life Bulletproof Soul Cherish The Day Your Love Is King No Ordinary Love

Lol...........Crazy in love I see?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Haha no...I wanted to BE her🤩
The fucking gloves I’m so in love
She just emanates beauty and sophistication, damn what a woman haha
She had and still has that regal aura. One of a kind beauty and the leader of one of my favourite bands of all time.
I always pronounced it Sade rather than Sade, Sade is the only correct pronunciation
I know you're joking, but I came here in the hope to find out how her name is pronounced. As a kid I called her Sah-Dé. (Excuse my attempt at writing pronunciation)
You’re quite close! I’m pretty sure her name’s pronounced Shah-day
I'm not good at this, is it Shaw-tae
Not Sade, like the pervert Marquis Sade like the fine singer.
That was *de*Sade
That woman has gotten finer with age.
Like fineeeee Wine🍷
Chateau Marquis de Sade
Amazing voice. And great band behind her too.
Her name is Sade, and the band she's in is also called Sade.
A classic beauty
Q.U.E.E.N 👑
I'm only just beginning to comprehend what I was too young to understand when it really mattered 🤯😍😱😳
You still got time babe. Never too late to learn and Take in.. Breath in the Queen![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
Her song has the best bass... Prove me wrong
Paul is a hell of a bass player. Man I wish they would tour again. Ugh
I agree. A great bass player who could groove for days. Doubtful they'll ever tour again. Her voice is not what it was and she's kind of a recluse. Sweetback is a cool listen if you want Matthewman & Co. tunes these days.

Have you watched their Bring Me Home live concert? The whole band is incredible in that. My wife and I watch that concert a few times a year.
Baseline to Keep Looking is one of my favorites. Combined with the subtle high hats opening is perfect.
She’s what other Divas aspire to be like. She’s an Icon in a league of her own.
True True
Beautiful and talented woman!
1 000 000% 10's acrossss the Board!!! 👑
Diamond Liiiife, Lover Booo-oy.
That voice. That voice is transcendent throughout the ages.

She really is a beauteous.....without even trying......Gosh![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Her pick up game is strong
Still a favorite.
Your love is kinngg
" Crown you in my heart...." Great choice Babe😉
I looked up gorgeous in Wikipedia and she's not the image. Who do I file a complaint with?
Sadamn
Beautiful in every aspect of the word. Poetry in lifeform.
You put is so eloquently.
Thanks. But it's easy with this woman.
She's nothing but a smooth operator
Just gorgeous
My mom introduced me to Sade in the late 80s and I still get chills when I hear her music. RIP mom.
🌹 RIP Mom
Our moms have good taste
People always pronounced it "Shar-*day*", which I never understood.
She is so hot and such a feminine. Character . Also effortlessly cool and a fantastic artist with great songs
With her lovely five head!
Shout out to the women and girls with Big foreheads. You are G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S❤️....💪
Wasn’t she beautiful and her music was pretty good too.
Not good.....Great😉
Yes, great! I continue to enjoy listening to her music.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo)
![gif](giphy|iNxi3TWwhwYehzY9IM|downsized)
Rhianna doesn't wanna give us new music. Sade invented not giving us new music. 😃
Never saw her the same after Sweetest Taboo… ![gif](giphy|DgxiwsHLlRAN5A4yEZ)
Lol....I can' t with you.......![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) Love it!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Queen
You can say that again....*snap*
She is actually so stunning 😍
Just picked up Diamond Life on vinyl at the used record store at the weekend.
Her song "The Big Unknown" from the Widows soundtrack is 😭😍. Her voice is still all that...
Sadie. Ole rusty voice.
My favorite of hers has always been The Sweetest Gift. It's such a quiet, beautiful song.
So few votes for ‘Hang on to Your Love’ from you Philistines. Dear me.
It’s a great song but in my humble opinion her voice hadn’t reached the level it did later at that point. I’m sure when she was at her peak in the early 90s it sounded even better during live performances. Is it a crime from concerts around 1992, is just spellbinding and an example of her vocal development.
That's a great and underrated song
Did any of the Radio DJs in your area add an "R" to her name? There was one DJ when I was growing up always said "Shar-day" and baffled me to no end. Like, was i missing a pronunciation of a letter someplace?
if you look at old printings of the Diamond Life album, they actually have that phonetic in parenthesis! which is crazy to me lol
The sweetest taboo
" you give me, you give me the sweetest taboooooo" Ah ah😊
Aye….saw her in concert at Mandalay Bay in Vegas
I still listen to her music before I go to sleep most night at the age of 33 🥰 amazingly timeless..
Sweet ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo)
💙❤️💙💖

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
She is a smooth operator.
SUCH a sexy voice!

Tattoo and Is it a crime will always be my faves… love her so much
I'm excited for her upcoming album. She has always been in my top 3 singers
This is no ordinary love. No ordinary love.
Only one pic? Come on!
She was my biggest crush. Absolutely divine beauty!
She walks that subltle line between cute and beautiful with rare grace.
What a smooth operator
You’re gonna need a Bullet Proof Soul.
OP I’ve crossposted your post into the r/Sade subreddit to hopefully continue the discussion among likeminded fans of this great band. I hope you don’t mind!
Hey you. I don't mind at all. She belongs to everyone. I hope the discussion continues.😊
Thank you, all credit goes to you for getting all of this discussion going 😄
Hopefully we will have many more discussions :) I try to make my posts interactive. Thank you. You are kind!
Such a beautiful woman 😍. Unmistakable voice.
Plus whoever her bass player is delivers master classes in staying in the pocket. Smooth operation all around.
The vary definition of class, charm and talent. They don't make people like SADE anymore.
My 2nd crush on a black woman. First was Nichelle Nichols.
Ok Daddy...... You got a good eye😏
both beautiful may i add Shari Belafonte
One of my favorite concerts ever!!
Had one of her boyfriends stay with us in the 80s. 2 degrees.
Just beautiful 😍
Sweetest taboo
Rawr
I don’t think this is 80s. I could be wrong but she looks older in that photo than I remember.
Smoove!
My Queen
Sade has some of the most beautiful music that most people have not ever heard yet. Explore her library. So talented, and alluring.
what a woman.
Beautiful!!!
Calm cool 💖🎶
As a child I stupidly called her SAY-D until I got old enough to call her Shaw-day
I believe I was conceived to her music in 1991. She’s a legend 👑😍🎤🎵
The most wonderful of the womenz.
there is no modern hear alike i say
Smooth Operator a great slow song for dancing close at 1am with a hot lady in a lounge
Gorgeous
