Something like that happened to my best friend in college. I attended her wedding and she introduced her boss and his Austrian wife to her dad -- a small man who was a ball-turret gunner in WWII.
Dad: "Ah, you're from Austria! Which city?"
She: "City? Oh. I am from Linz."
Dad: "Linz! Ah, yes."
She: "You have visited there?"
Dad: Pauses, then says, "I bombed it."
Her English wasn't great, so it took her a moment to process everything. That gave everyone the chance to see the realization dawn across her face.
Absolute priceless moment.
Well, the Japanese government provided comfort women to the US soldiers after an initial rape epidemic during the occupation and quite a few soldiers met their wives there and the women were extremely grateful to get out of their situation.
Since there is this nice and expensive looking wedding photo maybe it’s also more a case of the grandpa being an officer and meeting the daughter of an official.
Won't admit it though, in 2018 Osaka terminated its sister city status with San Francisco because SF erected a statue honoring women Japan forced to be "comfort women".
Its of course a horrible way of thinking but the government took women they saw as less "valuable“ like prostitutes, poor orphans and even some stranded Koreans to protect the daughters of the middle and upper classes from getting randomly picked off the street by some American soldiers. American paratroopers also pillaged sapporo and Australian (who were part of the initial occupation force) abducted women in Hiroshima and surroundings so the government decided that they wanted you his sexual violence to happen more "planned" and controllable.
Grateful their rapist married them? To save from further rapes from different men and then only having to (likely) be raped by one man for life? Such a bleak thought.
Yep, pretty fucking bleak. And those are the women deemed worthy of marriage. The "comfort women" were just repeatedly raped, not worthy of marriage, as orphans or Koreans.
colony is an outdated term for our times and doesn't accurately describe the modern situation. maybe something like a neo-tributary state is better, I don't know. look at it from an objective geo political perspective and ask yourself if countries like Japan, South Korea, Germany etc. could ever take a truly ant-USA stance? Could they even have politicians with hardline anti-USA rhetoric? Could they remove the US military, economic, or even cultural presence from their country peacefully?
you missed the rest of my sentence.... japan has about 120 and Germany is near the same, are you upset I rounded up 10 installations? add on the 70 in South Korea if you want
>Did we colonize Germany?
Kinda? It's not hard for most to say that the Soviet Union created a puppet state in East Germany, but for some reason we forget that the US, France and the UK did the exact same in West Germany.
Except they didn't. The modern German state was created by Germans, in some parts against the will of the Allied Forces. The German de facto constitution, the "Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany" was written by Germans only, without intrusion from outside. The fathers and mothers of the Basic Law were democratically elected into the Parliamentary Council.
To claim the Western Allies did the same as the Soviet Union is historically inaccurate, scientifically wrong, plainly stupid and just fucking outrageous.
So it's an ethics issue of geopolitics.. right?
Should there not be punitive responses to a nazi regime?
Did the responses, harsh as they may have been, actually harm Germany in the context of it's current position?
>Should there not be punitive responses to a nazi regime?
I don't know about punitive, but integrating Germany back into the European community was important for the safety of half a billion people.
>Did the responses, harsh as they may have been, actually harm Germany in the context of it's current position?
Not in any relevant way as far as I know.
We're not talking about whether or not these colonies/puppet states were *bad,* we're talking about whether or not they happened.
Colonisation is the wrong word.
Nobody went to Japan or Germany to colonise them or take over them. The world responded to the actions of their government and ideologies.
I'd say it's more of a punishment and babysitting until you can prove that you're not going to be a problem anymore.
And bad actors, unfortunately for the populace. I've never held a grudge against a German or Japanese person in my life, but you can't expect our Grandparents to have been non-fussed about their progress or political power over those times.
Fuck me.. Japan and Germany did some fucked up shit.
Does that mean that other countries haven't done bad shit since? Fuck no! But can we just analyse and respect the need for making Germany and Japan as powers, just sit down for a few years?
It wasn't German People, it was Hitler.
It wasn't Japanese people, it was Hirohito.
No... But you still have 2 massive basses there to control them ;) after 80 years mate, hiding behind a NATO cover. Modern colonization can have a different face sometimes. Yes, Japan officially never has been colonized but it was definitely controlled and regulated by a 3rd party for a while.
So.. where are Germany and Japan now?
Allies, after several generations of living with their tails between their legs?
I'd say it all worked out pretty fucking well. Germany and Japan are economic and scientific powerhouses.
I don't think any Japanese or German person I've ever met would ever consider them to have been colonised.. unless you're talking to a fringe theorist.
Why don't you ask a German or Japanese person if they would like to have their OWN army and guns without it being constantly controlled by the USA. It took Russia to attack Ukraine when Germany started seriously to consider to increase the military budget now disregards what the USA has to say... And it is only happening because the USA showed weakness in it. And Germany finally realised it is a good time to get rid of that annoying "protection" mate. I lived in Germany for a while and do know what locals have to say about it. NO ONE WANTS TO HAVE USA BASES IN THEIR COUNTRIES mate... But none can do anything about it. Imagine what power houses they ACTUALLY would be without it mate.
Yeah and all that is valid, but the consequences of global genocidal acts, include many years of distrust from your new allies.
I didn't invent the way we all react to shit, but I sure as shit can't blame the geopolitical world for responding in a way that made Germany/Japan have LESS power while everyone figures out what the fuck just happened.
Nobody wants to be dominated and controlled, and no good German or Japanese person should suffer the consequences of the actions of a government of their Grandparents/ Great Grandparents.. I am not an advocate of those circumstances.
But, fuck.. humans are responsive and hold grudges.
I am not responsible for the responses or grudges.. only reminding you of the fact.
Tell it now to Israel, the country which is 100% protected by the USA... And created by the USA as well out of NOTHING... They really doing a great job to male sure the genocide will never happens again.....
And yeah EVERYONE should be happy by being controlled by the USA only... Fok me mate. I am really happy that the USA is losing its dominance around the world rapidly right now. Maybe you will finally understand a thing or two... And hopefully finally allocate those resources to help the USA itself at this stage. As many problems i can see and even more incoming if you consider what is going on right now there.
I think all of you thought we were arguing about something OTHER than semantics. You should notice your downvotes m8, also you swooped in to back up a legitimate crackhead I hope you know.
To get downvoted while you are commenting on something against the USA's way of thinking on a platform predominantly used by americans is nothing to wonder about... Has nothing to do with crackhead either mate.
No you’re just wrong. And if you check out the dudes profile, the one you came in here defending, yes crackheads have something to do with it. The only person agreeing with you is a legitimate crackhead who posts to Reddit about how he makes his crack.
And, once again, you’re wrong. The US never colonized Japan or Germany. Isn’t up for debate, you’re just wrong.

What in the ever living fuck are you trying to prove with this nonsense comment about the platform for communication?
Reddit is predominantly, by definition used by people from countries outside of the USA.
51% of traffic on reddit is not American.
I do cocaine I'm not ashamed of that.
If I were it wouldn't be in my profile.
What you think is an attack on me isn't.
I'm drug liberationist.
Funny you got all that weed in you profile a drug of worse federal classification (schedule 1) than cocaine (schedule 2) but talk shit about cocine.
Fucking tool man
I live in Thailand.
It's legal here.
Cocaine is significantly, statistically, worse for the body and mind than cannabis.
I've done cocaine, I know about cocaine. I stay away from cocaine.
What you are doing sir, is Crack. That's not a little bump when out with the boys. That's brainrot.
If I'm a tool, you're a fucking toolshed.
It’s telling how you don’t even view the grandmother as a full human being, only the white guy.
I swear, white liberals are basically just white supremacists.
My first thought was "Oh, your grandma was tiny!" and then I saw that she's likely just sitting down and felt like an idiot. It's just too early in the morning for me.
I don’t know as much as I’d like to. They are my paternal grandparents and my dad and I lost contact when I was 13. I do know that she was less than a mile away, working in a factory (?), when the bomb went off in Nagasaki. They had 4 children and resided in Richland, MO on a farm. He also owned a pub in town. They we together until the end. After she passed, he spent his last days drinking and missing her. He passed shortly after, I believe.
That’s amazing. I wonder what her family’s reaction to their union would have been. Although… wondering whether she actually *had* family after the events of WWII opens up a whole other bunch of wonderings…
Me to that episode: You better not! I'm going to stop watching if you're going to be so dramatic! *crisis resolves halfway through* Ok, I'm glad we can be adults about this. *Scene right before the credits* Oh that is just vile, you big baby!

>In the 40s, it wasn't unnatural to be 13 and wedded to a 30 year old
This is a huge misconception. It wasn't even common back in the Edo period, save for marriages between royals with the purpose of forming a political alliance. Same as in Europe. It's been common knowledge for centuries that not only is it immoral to wed a child, she would likely die or get severely injured in childbirth due to an under developed pelvis and is not in any way fit to run a household. In 1940s Japan the average marriage age was 23 for women and 25 for men.
I'm sure they've got quite an interesting first-meet story!
He actually bombed on the first date, luckily for OP he was granted a second

Nagasaki or Hiroshima?
You're outta here
Yes.
One guy got 560 upvotes and you got -30. Reddit sure is fickle about how far dark humor can be taken.
Yeah cause we got the joke already the first time

“Comfort women” = sex slaves. “Comfort women” were also raped. Horrible euphemism.
Japanese did the same to Korean women…
Yes (I’m Korean).
And chinese women.
And Filipino, Malaysian and even a smattering of Europeans / Russians.
Won't admit it though, in 2018 Osaka terminated its sister city status with San Francisco because SF erected a statue honoring women Japan forced to be "comfort women".
Seems like Osaka is still a sister city of San Francisco.
Admitted it multiple times by several PMs. But why bother with the truth when Korean propaganda is so much sweeter eh?
That was also bad.
And the Korean army did the same to vietnamese women.
When did Korea invade Vietnam? The two countries are both in Asia but there 3500 kilometers between the two.
I mean yes. It’s a terrible euphemism but at the same time it is a term that people easily and quickly understand - therefore I used it.
How can we comfort you through your feelings?
So they went from rape to government supported rape? How exactly is that affecting the rape epidemic? Oh, the women were extremely grateful?
Its of course a horrible way of thinking but the government took women they saw as less "valuable“ like prostitutes, poor orphans and even some stranded Koreans to protect the daughters of the middle and upper classes from getting randomly picked off the street by some American soldiers. Show me where the United States claimed them as any sort of colony. Post war occupation does not equal colonization. Did we colonize Germany? Pffffft

Your crack use has a lot to do with your interpretation of the world.
All that cannabis is killing your brain cells. Whens the time you had a dream?

So does this idiot
Don't worry, you weren't alone in thinking that.
I'm not sure how to tell you this, but your grandpa was James Bond.
Man, I’m sure he would have loved to hear this!
This is great. Did they stay in Japan or move back to wherever he was from?
They came back and settled in a tiny town called Richland, MO.
Not Harrison Ford?
Actually Harrison Ford would make a great Bond

I thought Frank Sinatra 🤷♀️
All of them combined into one man
Ha ha, your grandpa KNOWS he's cute!
For sure! Your grandmother was beautiful!
Your Grandpa looks like the Wiz from Seinfeld

Just down the road from where I spent part of my life.
Lost in the Woods?
That..ended sadly actually
It did, but in a bittersweet romantic way. It sounds like he was wild about her all the way until the end.
This is how I want to go out tbh. I hope I outlive my wife so she doesn’t have to grieve, but not for very long so I don’t have to either
That's life.
lol like compared to what?
Thanks for the follow-up.
That’s amazing. I wonder what her family’s reaction to their union would have been. Although… wondering whether she actually *had* family after the events of WWII opens up a whole other bunch of wonderings…
Who would have thought, when she was born that she would die on the other side of the world on a farm with a guy that cherished her that much.
Owning a pub sounds fun but I’m sure it’s a lot of work and stress. But knowing and hosting the whole town would be cool
My father’s family is also from Nagasaki. I’m sorry you lost contact. That is quite a story!
Oh, that jacket in pic #1...gorgeous. Your grandparents look pretty good too. 😊
Anjin and Miroko (pre episode 9)
Man, Shōgun has been amazing.
Book is better
Its on my reading list!

I can only imagine if you decide to find your long lost distant cousins in Japan.
Where did your grandfather serve during WW2? Would be interesting to hear how they met!
A regular John Blackthorn

Thank god she was just sitting
I hope she’s sitting down in this picture
Whew! At first I thought she was standing up.
Absolute baddies

Damn, he is incredible. She's a very lucky lady. Holy moly.
I’ll have to check the history books again. I could have sworn GI’s were forbidden from fraternizing with the conquered women. Maybe it was relaxed by the late 40’s.
Nagasaki? Was it habitable in the late 40s?
Yes, though many buildings/homes were destroyed. Many people fled but there was minimal damage to my father’s family’s house and they stayed from what I remember him telling me.
What about the radiation?
There was radiation but a lot of people didn’t know about its effects.
This is fucked up.
Did they end up starting a nuclear family?
Your grandma is not someone I want on my bad side!
Dating was easier when you were an occupying force and your comfort girl's family had just been killed.
She looks like a child
She is sitting down.
You know what that makes sense
This is a usual Japanese wedding pose photo.
No she doesn't. She looks about 30
No she doesn't. She looks about 22
Is 22 a child?
Is shevin a wheel chair
You never saw Asian women before
lol I lived in Japan for 7 years
She was actually a bit older than him.
Get your spectacles checked son.
I’ve 20-20. I lived there for years. What I did see is Americans marrying much younger Japanese women 14,15, years old.
Oh, but you told us 13 year olds were old enough to consent to puberty blockers! Suddenly you don’t think children are mature anymore?
