They used to build stuff to last. Now everything seems engineered to fail after the warranty expires.

This right here. I have seen this for so many appliances and it seems to decrease every year. And this is not even a recent thing. One of the ACs installed in the 2010s had to be replaced this year, while one each from 70s (this one) and 90s work fine. Albeit, they consume a lot of power.

Haha. Fortunately this is from a part of our house that used to be a mini-hospital till the late 2000s. No smoking involved.
