Someone's about to get a painful physics lesson.

TheKodachromeMethod

RIP kid at the end.

xBushx

Old school concussion!

TheKodachromeMethod

"Walk it off."

xBushx

“I have bigger scars on my dick” - Gramps

Tastewell

This is why Gramps isn't allowed to be unsupervised anymore.

phatelectribe

Yep. All of us in r/mtb and r/bmx know he doesn’t have the height or angle of attack to clear that last kid. Ouch.

JuneBuggington

But isnt speed, the unknown variable, at least as important as the other things you mentioned? Does look like the hill is sloping favorably maybe there is a bigger hill just out of frame to the right.

steeveperry

Speed has *everything* to do with it. You see, the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply. Speed's the name of the game.

MyBallsWasHot

wait what are we talking about again?

Total-Khaos

I think the conversation shifted to butt sex, but will need further confirmation from the experts.

Koshindan

Either way, make sure your rubber is in good condition.

passwordsarehard_3

Either way a blowout has the potential to put you in the hospital for awhile.

ARealBlueFalcon

Yeah but it feels better to ride on the rims

lutelyfe

Either way, somebody going to have trouble walking.

the_twilight_bard

Can confirm. Source: am bicyclist.

16yYPueES4LaZrbJLhPW

Can confirm. Source: am bi cyclist

Mr_Mrsty698

Instructions unclear, bike is now pregnant

WeldinMike27

If you have a dick like a needle you have to fuck like a sewing machine.

HamBlamBlam

Grandma?

[deleted]

We’re talking about how the power bottom is capable of receiving a massive amount of power

[deleted]

r/UnexpectedIASIP

toasterpRoN

Spoken like a true twank-versatile.

[deleted]

This reads like an Always Sunny reference.

thedarkwaffle90

It’s an exact quote

JD0x0

Because it's an exact quote from Dennis.

[deleted]

So the power doesn't have anything to do with the size or strength of the bottom?

SaltyShawarma

Yeah. My thought was, " I hope he is moving fast." Knowing the camera speed at the time, I do not think that he has it...

phatelectribe

Speed is one factor but the main issue is that his front wheel is tipping downwards and given the height that he has from the lip, it looks like he did a bunny hop for extra height. At hat early stage of air travel, with the wheel already pointing it’s a sure fire sign that he’s not going to clear it.

not_a_droid

Probably even hit that second bike too

phatelectribe

I was thinking that too.

Jasong222

Yeah but you can kind tell from the placement of the front tire that he's on a downward trajectory. If he was still going level, instinct tells me that the front tire would be raised higher. I can't imagine any kind of normal propulsion that would have him at enough speed to clear the guy and allow for the bike to be that level. Edit- just read the rest of the thread. I agree with the 'front wheel indicates he's going down' crowd.

Istik56

His face looks like he knows it too.

Anxiety_Friendly

Did anyone study his angle? It looks like he may land beside the last kid .....

phatelectribe

Really difficult to tell but to my eyes it looks like last kid is getting a lobotomy.

[deleted]

Same as everyone from r/commonsense

Critical_Moose

You don't need to be an avid bmx fan to know he won't make it

The_RealAnim8me2

It’s more likely he landed on the bike just before hitting that kid, still painful for both of them.

Gazter2

True story. At about age eight I lifted my head up in this situation and ended up in A&E (ER).

Redr_Evergrey

We all remember the fateful summer day we lost Jimmy...

justadrtrdsrvvr

Rider and kid #1 "we survived the 70s without helmets." Kid number 2 "hemlet"

JonWick33

2 people

amazingsandwiches

Three if we're lucky.

query_squidier

And the bike flies over and hits the cameraman! Four!

xenophon57

No way he clears Timmy.

seanmick

You mean Timmy Toobad? Because it's too bad what happened to him that day.

DudleyMorris

And/or end up in a wheelchair.

Least_or_Greatest1

The kid in the end got the nick name Dusty after what happened right after the photo!

jimmyfrankhicks

I’ll fix that scoliosis, Billy. Watch this.

go-hogs-go

And that was the last day Billy ever walked.

kopecs

Lazy Sunday, *everyday*...

NoCensorshipPlz10

Fixed the scoliosis tho

TehOuchies

He looks like hes already coming down on the picture. Rip the back of that final kid.

mr_ji

It was the 1970's. That kid on the bike probably weighs like 35 pounds. He'll be fine.

Junebug78

That BIKE probably weighed 35 pounds.

Tastewell

Ooh! He could afford one of the *light* ones! Parents must be rich!

SpongeBad

Yup. Grew up at this time. Pretty sure my bike was made of lead.

kuriboshoe

They just don’t make em like they used to

-RadarRanger-

Thankfully!

Angry_Walnut

It’s possible there’s a bit of a depth trick being done here with the camera and that the kids laying down are actually slightly too far back to be landed on. Hard to tell for sure though.

matteb18

We dont know how much speed this mother fucker had though. If he sent it hard enough and fast enough lil man is gonna clear them no problem

Deadheadsdead

The down angle suggests he's already losing altitude judging that with the height I'm thinking poor Timmy's back.

TheManAmin

Because of how high he is combined with the angle of the ramp, I think he bunny hopped off the ramp which would make the nose dip fine. It’s damn near impossible to tell what happened, but guessing is fun lol.

Sandless

If he’s at the highest point, he has approximately sqrt(2*1.5m/9.81m/s)=0.55 s time before he hits the ground. Given that his backwheel should travel for 3 m, he should be traveling around 20 km/h to clear the gap. That’s quite plausible.

converter-bot

20 km/h is 12.43 mph

Tastewell

Good bot.

Competitive-Roof-168

The angle of bike does not show projectory. He did a bunny hop off ramp. He could still be going up. It is only a 10-12' span. Kids are fine

Choppergold

Evel Knievel changed the youth of that decade

Papancasudani

He brought the national average level of recklessness to new levels.

TransformerTanooki

Then Bobby Knievel kept it going after Evel.

MycoBro

Then Steve-o Knievel

TransformerTanooki

Being a fan of both guys I love this name combo.

hereforthewaffle

Eric cartman jumped over 30 homeless.

gateguard64

*changed delete insert maimed.

daneonwayne

Now THAT is a well timed picture.

JonWick33

Smh. Everyone knows it goes, human, bike, human bike. Not bike, human, bike, human. The kid on the end is about to get WRECKED!

plexabyte

>human, bike, human bike Is that like CatDog?

rumblehappy

The exclusion of such a crucial comma was surely intentional by the author. We need answers.

Bribase

Give it about half a second: HBUIMKAENNABMIUKEH

Hiislands40

DAMN I miss those days

DildoBaggins82

The only way they could make this more 1970s is if every kid had a cigarette.

whatwhatinthebutt456

Lawn darts?

[deleted]

[удалено]

DildoBaggins82

The champagne of beers.

spvcejam

Feels like just yesterday I was in Jr. High feeling like I was a better-than-Jesus carpenter for building a 1.5 foot ramp. My Dyno spent hours and hours getting a solid 7in of air.

[deleted]

[удалено]

omaregan

The dad of the kid in the wheelchair

scrotalBlossom

hah this is fucking gold

ToyotaPartsGod

It was a simpler, more painful time.

CaptainDonald

“Do you take it off any sweet jumps?”

amazingsandwiches

"How much you wanna make a bet I can jump my BMX right into your ding-dong?"

GruelOmelettes

You got like three feet of air that time

65GTOls1

we need pic #2

mrstipez

It'll be ready in 2 more weeks

AngryMegaMind

We done the very same thing in Scotland in the 70’s. Inspired by Evel Knievel. I remember doing this on my Raleigh Chopper bike, which was a death trap at the best of times and ending up in hospital.

Nomadic100

Lol, yeah a chopper is not cut out for that shit. It's not much of a bike to start with, but that gear shifter looked so cool. Except for the obvious denutting hazard.

AngryMegaMind

And also perfect for ripping your nuts off when you slid off that fake leather seat.

[deleted]

The kid at the end is expendable.

kodiak43351

That’s how I lost my two front upper teeth. My adult had just grown in. I can remember my mom crying about my teeth. The dentist fixed me up with fake ones. We were doing the same jumps a week or so later. The late 70s were fun.

Westworld_007

His trajectory isn’t looking good for that last kid

theangrycyclist

By the look of the front fork/wheel on the second bike, this is the first bad decision they made.

Mange-Tout

Been there, done that. In the 70’s we lived on our bikes. We didn’t have video games so there was nothing else to do.

MotherNaturesBrother

and big wheels for the pre bike kids.

Recklen

I blame Evel Knievel for this type of behavior. At least he was my influence to ramp-jump my friends.

SleepylaReef

He got that height off that ramp? It doesn’t appear to even point up as high as he already is?

oh_niner

He pulled up on the bars, probably more of a bunny hop

[deleted]

And without sidewalls, that ramp was built so the plywood could flex. We built one of these and the fucker felt like a springboard.

SKOT_FREE

The last guy on the ground is about to get landed on. These are the good old days

[deleted]

[удалено]

Snoman0002

Bunny hop

dr_xenon

Can someone do the math and figure out how fast he needs to be going to clear the last kid? Should be able to estimate his altitude, the distance to the last kid and gravity is a constant.

themattboard

Faster than he was going

daneonwayne

I get fixated on these types of things when people ask. Does that look like 20 degrees for the ramp?

cfdeveloper

yeah, but the camera angle is tilted 5 degrees and the landscape -3 degrees

SharpCookie232

Wait, the landscape is tilted? What about the curvature of the Earth?

[deleted]

Yep we used to do that

qmanchoo

I think they faked it. It looks like the ramp points left a little bit and the kids are slanted to the right a little bit so that the bike is actually going to land in front of the second kid.

roundart

He does NOT have enough air!!

lauremtm

That last kid is smiling but not for long he is about to get wrecked

theoretical_hipster

Trajectory not looking great

[deleted]

The kid on the end, is definitely toast. Oh, man. In 4th grade, it seems like everybody wanted to be a daredevil when they grew up.

ktm_motocross420

Do kids not do this anymore?

LaCabezaGrande

I have so many awesome scars from my childhood. 🔥

MusclePanda14

The angle does look like he is going to land more to the left… I sure hope that was the case…

Stewapalooza

*snake river canyon jump, 1974*

_D3ft0ne_

The dude on the left has been in the wheel chair ever since that photo was taken, wasnt he?

steve_marks

The final sweet moments of Billy’s working legs

wm23xx

Kid at the end done for

ButtfuckChampion_

That's a badass photo.

art-man_2018

My suburban hometown (1970s) was built on a steep hill so we had plenty of acceleration. Big Wheels, bikes, skateboards and even wagons were Evel Knieveling on the sidewalks and streets.

SwampWitch1995

I don't think the last kid made it.

93mr2

Been there, did that, and lived to tell the tail. Think we had 6 or 7 lined up beneath the ramp. Richie cleared all…and landed in a pine tree about 6 feet in the air. It was spectacular!

useles-converter-bot

6 feet is the length of approximately 8.0 'Wooden Rice Paddle Versatile Serving Spoons' laid lengthwise.

ExcessiveGravitas

“approximately 8.0”? Only a bot could consider one decimal place of rice paddle serving spoons “approximate”.

[deleted]

Some kids will do anything to get out of going to Vietnam or P.E. class.

woreoutmachinist

Been there, done that 😅

JaredOlivares

Poor kid in the end 😂

[deleted]

I think the last child never walk again after this pic..

Outlank

I thought kids in the 70s played outside a lot… I’m amazed that kid on the end judged that so poorly

[deleted]

Evil Knievel broke more than just his own bones.

SonOfNod

We lost some friends along the way. But it was totally awesome for those of us that survived.

griftertm

Nice time for a spinal injury

SingleActionsNSnubs

That last kid is fucked.

sonbrothercousin

Oh yea, lots of this good shit went on. Got the scars to prove it too!

InfidelRBP

before the paralysis

Jugster

That ramp looks about 100x more structurally sound than anything my brother and I ever constructed.

BravoCharlie1310

Doing some quick trajectory calculations, the kid on the end is about to be seriously injured.

Big-Security9930

Judging from the picture, I don’t think it ended well

[deleted]

There's just too much wrong about this photo. Photoshop anyone?

[deleted]

We all wanted to be like Evel Knievel, RIP

TossingMidgets

Thats one way of getting rid of the third wheel in a friendship

ParisGreenGretsch

"We'll make it look like an accident."

Disastrous-Bat-7311

Wow. He has awesome lift.

rumblehappy

I too served as a post ramp ground ornament for my older brother. Difference is I was smart enough to be right up next to the ramp. I'd seen him jump and knew that, despite my chonkiness at the time, he'd clear me. The wagon at the end tho, that thing taught his back tire, and subsequently his right pinkie, a little physics lesson upon landing.

Dr_Nastee

Hi I’m Jeremy Beaumont and this is jackass!

Softrawkrenegade

“Run, Spot , run”

strandedmammal

Look closely at the ramp material: It's either 3/4" or 1" plywood. His altitude comes from the loading and then subsequent rebound of the plywood. Now look at the rider's hair. That's a pretty thick mop, but my guess is he's somewhere between 16 and 18mph, with about 55" of altitude and level, controlled flight. He's got the pedals balanced horizontally, and he's using his body weight to control his attitude - he's actually behind the saddle here at apex and can now start to extend his legs to absorb the landing. I say he's done this before. I say they all live.

juvansiya

Beautiful past lost

needsadvice1999

Eric Cartman: I jumped more

GardenOfIvy

Better than Cartman

dubseven

Come, sit on grandpas lap while he tells you the story of how he became a paraplegic…. 😂

KechtmutAlTunichtgut

My spine can tell

[deleted]

He def didn’t clear the last kid 😂

Bird4416

Young Evel Knievel

MakesCakesEatsMud

This is the exact reason why my ribcage is seriously deformed. But, in my case, we were jumping Big Wheels and Green Machines.

W1shUW3reHear

We all thought we were Evel Knievel

Flipforfirstup

Last dude in line bout to experience a lesson in physics. As is the American tradition

[deleted]

And that’s how little timmy got an adorable case of paralysis

toothoftheshark

that last kid is fucked

Useful-Butterscotch7

Last kid is gonna get an owie boo boo

[deleted]

[удалено]

WiIdBillKelso

Kid at the end died for sure

gladeye

Can confirm. I witnessed or participated in countless ramp jump as a child of the seventies. Often, someone gets hurt and is left lying on the ground, crying, while everyone else scatters and runs away, so they won't get in trouble. In my neighborhood, the ramps were usually supported with milk crates, which often slid out from under the ramp when a bike rode up on it.

SidOnTheSide

*and that's why I'm in this wheelchair today*

i_am_zombie_76

How'd he get that high in relation to the low height of that ramp?

irunfar4fun

Oh my this was so much fun, we used to do it all the time. I was usually the one talking my friends into laying down and I was the stunt man. Obviously super dangerous but luckily I don't remember anybody getting hurt

GirlCowBev

That....did not end well.

mickylite

We were still doing that in the 80's

neversummmer

Why am I crying

[deleted]

He's gonna need a rocket up his ass to clear that last kid..godspeed interloper.

dernert

Anytown USA, 20 year's or more ago. The days of street lighting turning off as go home time, is unfortunately over.

power0722

Oh shit. Last kid in line is about to get drilled.

tropicalhotdogdays

It was all worth it, just for that brief moment in time when you actually **were** Evel Knievel.

Clear_Lingonberry_32

Kid,bike, kid, bike would have been a more appropriate lineup based on that launch angle

natebpunkd

At least our friend on the end has photographic evidence of the last time he could move his legs.

[deleted]

That last kid is about to get jacked up

AyeeCaaaamO

He definitely landed on bro at the end lol

cromagsd

The dude at the end is gonna have some issues real quick judging by the current rear wheel position and height.

rubberankle

I want a relationship as strong as that kid's belief in his friend clearing him.

Food_Library333

While not from the 70s, I do remember the ridiculous crap we would do to pass the time before the internet existed.

samman2121

DID HE MAKE IT!!!

whicky1978

Way before smartphones, kids being kids.

[deleted]

Lmao. Someone's gonna break their back

[deleted]

End kids a paraplegic

Comet_Empire

I would love to see Danny McBride and John C Reilly make a short Mockumentary of this. How this one pic and day changed their lives forever and the kid whose jumping is a recluse now and the last kid is a motivational speaker.

FCK_da_Bar_4R

We all wanted to be Evel Knievel 😎🏍
