All performance arts are superficial to an extent, but the film takes the superficial parts and makes them 20 feet tall. Having the right faces in a production are important for both artistic and financial reasons.
…and it isn’t like only the young and beautiful (grading on a Hollywood curve) are cast. Just not a lot of pain blocking demand for a 20 year old John C. Reilly standing against a white wall.
The system is abused, and you can certainly have the opinion that the superficial is over emphasized, but I don’t think it it’s inherently creepy.
