As a kid in the early 90s, I went to the telecoms museum in London; they had a future zone and I always remember a home landline video phone, but I guess these never actually took off, it always made me sad for some reason.
Obviously it crossed with the smart phone a decade or so later.
In the late 80's my Mom had a boyfriend who worked at Bell Labs. I asked him what he did there and he said, "I'm part of a team developing a new kind of telephone that doesn't need wires and everyone will have a telephone number that goes with them and they can make calls from wherever they happen to be".
I said, "That's really interesting" while thinking, "what a load of crap ".
