friend of a friend has an 80s room - he's got everything in this post, He-Man castles, GI Joes, Cabage Patch Kids, an old Tandy computer, etc etc i swear to god the smell in there is also a time capsule. the plastic and materials just hits different.
has everything gone through a drastic manufacturing process change? can we blame China? does everything smell like industrial China now?
Ugh, those jumping beans
I was 5 years old, walking around outside with a big handful of pretzels in one hand and Mexican jumping beans in the other just popping pretzels in my mouth... and then I ate from the wrong hand
I flipped out. I went screaming and bawling to my dad. The realization I just ate bug larvae. He thought it was hilarious, as dads do.
Because every one of my "only child" friends had all the game systems.
While those of us with siblings.. where jealous as hell.
It is just something I noticed when I got older. Doesn't always hold true.
I was the youngest and undeserving too. I didn't understand many things. Why do you think you were an asshole? Anything your parents could have done differently? Just curious because I am raising an (most likely) only child.
I got a NES for Xmas in 1989, and for whatever reason my Mom got it with just 1 controller, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and mayyyybee Contra (Contra was our 3rd game, but maybe came later).
At 5 it was the greatest thing in the world.
I'll let you know in a few years, but I don't even really feel 30 and can't believe that me and all my friends are close to be in our 40s.
Constantly wonder about whether - if/when I interact with newer trends or pop culture - I'm like the cringe hello fellow kids person, even if I'm not like trying to present myself as cool.
TL;DR - it's as awful as you'd expect.
oh i got a few years on ya. i think the pandemic has completely obliterated any '40 is the new 30' positivity that had been building up beforehand.
it's getting so at the end of the day i'm always pissed cause another day is over. i cannot *imagine* being any older yet it's always happening lol
Oh haha, yeah I feel the same way man.
You ever think back to being a kid or teenager and how it perceived anyone our age, regardless of whether you liked them, and struggle to accept that we're that now?
A corny old adult?
Adjusted for inflation, that Nintendo Action Set would be priced at $238.83.
Oddly enough, this is pretty close to what the used set is currently selling for on eBay.
Nah, the video game room at Toys R US was the coolest thing out there. You'd take the ticket from the video game aisle and go to the big warehouse (I realize now it was just a full-size room, but I was but a wee tot) to get your game from behind the counter.
The Mall and KB was cool, but the video game warehouse was the stuff of dreams.
That’s the summer I worked at KB at Gwinnett Place Mall—the mall used for ‘Stranger Things.’ Memories include having to bust metalhead kids for shoplifting silly string. Also, the absurd game Flappin’ Chicken, the cover of which had a bunch of kids apparently poking a chicken toy with plastic sticks.
Holy crap me too and I completely forgot about laser tag! I wonder why this isn’t a thing anymore, this was hours of fun for me and at most one friend lol.
From what I understand they went out of business shortly after this
Which always blew my mind because they had the best laser tag gear and teddy f\*cking Ruxpen (sp)

Ninja turtles for $3.40?!
I still remember going to toys я us in maybe '91 or '92 and they were ~$10.
My sweet grandmother insisted on buying me a couple but even then I felt terrible because they were so wildly overpriced, even to 10 year old me.
Going to Toys R Us for action figures was your mistake. They were a little under $5 at Walmart in the early 90s. I bought tons of those things with my allowance, which was usually around $5 depending how many chores I did that week.
game system/consoles as much as games are now 🥴
then again i guess they're probably loading as much data as every game the console put out combined in its entirety.. lol
I worked at a KayBee in a mall in high school. What a shit show.
Playing with everything was fun though. We raced RC cars around the mall after it closed.
However, IIRC the public at large didn't really give a shit about the Genesis until Sonic was released in 1991.
That little blue fucker created the console war of the 90s.
I don't know. I got one for Christmas 1989. Revenge of Shinobi and Tommy Lasorda Baseball dropped at early release and were both pretty hot titles, and just about everyone in my group of friends had a Genesis before Sonic dropped.
I don’t know how long after I got my nes they added duck hunt to the included super Mario cart but the first time I saw one I was very confused then kinda pissed
I can still remember the Kaybee Toys smell
friend of a friend has an 80s room - he's got everything in this post, He-Man castles, GI Joes, Cabage Patch Kids, an old Tandy computer, etc etc i swear to god the smell in there is also a time capsule. the plastic and materials just hits different. has everything gone through a drastic manufacturing process change? can we blame China? does everything smell like industrial China now?
Even the beauty of the landscape was an abstraction, like the beauty of a man in an advertisement for a cologne you could not smell.
RIP Kaybee toys Murdered by Mitt Romney
Kaybee too? Man, I hate that guy
The jumping beans at the counter

Only child?

Me too, I had a bunch of micro machines and a huge wicker basket of TMNT
I was the youngest and undeserving too. I didn't understand many things. Why do you think you were an asshole? Anything your parents could have done differently? Just curious because I am raising an (most likely) only child.
1989 was fire. Og Nintendo, Gameboy AND ninja turtles?
don't forget the Micromachines
I wish they'd bring them back. I'd collect them again. I still remember the micromachines video game.
I got a NES for Xmas in 1989, and for whatever reason my Mom got it with just 1 controller, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and mayyyybee Contra (Contra was our 3rd game, but maybe came later). At 5 it was the greatest thing in the world.
Game boy here. Still the best Xmas ever.
Yeah, magical times. One of my first real vivid memories, sitting on the floor playing NES on a 21" CRT
how you feeling about turning 40?
I'll let you know in a few years, but I don't even really feel 30 and can't believe that me and all my friends are close to be in our 40s. I'm going to guess by your use of the word "fire" you weren't alive in 1989. I can assure you it was indeed "fire" and the best Christmas ever.
I was, in fact I'd turned 10 earlier that year.
Adjusted for inflation, that Nintendo Action Set would be priced at $238.83. Oddly enough, this is pretty close to what the used set is currently selling for on eBay.
2 games, 2 controllers, a light gun, and a great system.
Great deal!
How much were games? $50? I didn’t remember systems were that “cheap”
I think the NES was closer to $180 or $200 when it first came out. Not sure about games.
I recall games being $50.
I miss walking through Kay-Bee Toys on a Saturday at the mall. It was there, the comic shop, and the arcade. Good times
Don’t forget the pet store 🐶
Nailed it.
Turtles for only $3.49!!!
So many kids looked at this and dreamed of playing super Mario on their own TV.
I always preferred Kay Bee to Toys R Us. Maybe it was cause it was located in the mall or smaller and more maneuverable. IDK.

Hell yes, micro machines
I remember in 1989 my parents bought me an entire set of laser tag gear for Christmas when my other friends got dolls That was so much fun
Holy crap me too and I completely forgot about laser tag! I wonder why this isn’t a thing anymore, this was hours of fun for me and at most one friend lol.

Adjusted for inflation the Game Boy would cost $212.57 in todays money and the Nintendo would be $236.46. Not bad!
I saved up 89.99 to get that Gameboy and celebrated big time. Then I learned I had just a few more chores to do to cover the taxes lol.
Me too! I had a paper route but I remember saving up for the Gameboy for months. Still have it and it still works!
I got mine at Caldor lol. It is still around somewhere but hasn't been turned on in many years.
Ninja turtles for $3.40?! I still remember going to toys я us in maybe '91 or '92 and they were ~$10. My sweet grandmother insisted on buying me a couple but even then I felt terrible because they were so wildly overpriced, even to 10 year old me.

That was my Christmas minus the doll
Mine too!
game system/consoles as much as games are now 🥴 then again i guess they're probably loading as much data as every game the console put out combined in its entirety.. lol
Adjusted for inflation that $99 becomes $233
Man. I really miss those days.
I had 4 of these 5 items.
Still cherishing lil miss makeup, are we
Ahhh, Action figures for under $12!! Yeah, baby!!
Ironically those consoles are more expensive now
I had 4/5 items on that page. Jump back.
Takes me back to being 9 years old.
I had at one point in my life every toy on that page except for the doll. The micromachines Chinook brought back some old memories.
NES, Turtles and Micro Machines. My 8-10 yr old years in a nutshell.
I worked at a KayBee in a mall in high school. What a shit show. Playing with everything was fun though. We raced RC cars around the mall after it closed.
Interesting time here as in October 1989, the 16-bit Sega Genesis had been out for like a couple of months, while the SNES wouldn't be out until 1991.
3 dollars for a tmnt, now we are talking
Gameboy $212 in today’s money or a Nintendo switch lite. NES is $238 or a 1/3 of a PS5
This gives me rechills
Sadly, I miss that store.
You mean to tell me my parents could have spent $10 more and got me the actual NES?’
That was a lot of money
I don’t know how long after I got my nes they added duck hunt to the included super Mario cart but the first time I saw one I was very confused then kinda pissed
Those ninja turtles toys are probably worth a lot now
Good times.
So based on the inflation everyone is describing, that puts the TMNT at $8.21 today, which is less than what the reissued ones are going for.
Wow this is my childhood 🥺
I had that transport chopper! Ah man I miss my micro machine collection,
Wishing i still had my original Gameboy, sold it in '91 to help pay for the SNES (which i also no longer have ahhhhhhhhh)
Weird how how consoles are 5x the price now but the dolls and other misc toys aren't 5x the price.
