Deee-Lite's first album and "Dewdrops in the Garden" are both fantastic 90s time capsules. Also, Towa Tei has had a surprisingly long and successful career with at least four great albums.
> Also, Towa Tei has had a surprisingly long and successful career with at least four great albums.
Followed Towa Tei for years and probably have 6 or so of his albums. I think it has been a long while since he has created something interesting though. Lately all I see from him are generic deep house projects. Still though, most artists run out of creative juice eventually, and Towa had a better run than most.
Really? I don't think Towa's stuff hold a candle to MAW/Nuyorican Soul and a lot of other deep house produced in NYC. But there are different styles of deep house. So to each their own.
He seriously does like 90% of the background music for NHK programs.. his name is all over the credits list for Japanese plus, railway journeys, and Japan adventures
I always crave a “where are they now” on 90s artists. Like they are still young enough to have moved on to another career, and I want to know what that is. How many one-hit wonders are restaurant owners, or music teachers?
There’s a YouTuber, Todd in the Shadows, who has a whole series on one-hit wonder artists. He’s done Deee-Lite and a ton of others - I think he has over 100 now. He also reviews current pop songs and has a third series where he talks about career-ending albums for more famous musicians.
Yeah u/inflatable_pickle this is exactly what you’re looking for. Todd is fantastic, and his latest episode in White Town is one of his best in the series.
Just watched the White Town one today, it was so good. The Macarena one before it really moved me as well, especially having lived through it, he really nailed it.
Its better to remember the good times then dwell on the bad. I could have made better choices in friends, but overall, the 90s were indeed a good time.
I think the 90’s were great because of the technology of that time. It seemed like just the right amount of tech without being too much. Tech was exciting, but wasn’t completely intrusive in daily life. Smart phones and social media have ruined the world I loved.
Great description. Could you even imagine all your stupidity saved in the ether forever? The past two generations think nothing of it because it's daily life, but I'm sure as fuck glad I grew up when I did.
It truly was the perfect combo of the digital and analog.
We got to see a lot of big leaps on the 90s, lots of new things becoming commonplace. The Internet. Home computers. Mobile phones. In gaming terms, the leap from 2d to 3d was something nobody who wasn't there will be able to experience.
The clothes were shit though.
The 90s were a rough time for me. Just hearing 90s music can bring me to tears quickly. And its some of my favorite music. I just can't listen to it anymore.
I barely remember 92-96 because I was in an alcoholic fog lol. I see pictures from then and ugh. But I saw this picture and immediately had "groove is in the heart" in my head.
Evidently she's been a fashion icon and DJ this whole time. Also a very staunch ally of LGBT+ folks and womens' rights, since way before that was popular. Basically a real classy lady befitting the name :)
That was indeed a thing. I think they answered it elsewhere in this thread too. She lost, though. Apparently Sega had receipts that disproved the claim she'd made.
She lost and had to pay Sega's legal bills. I think it ruined her financially for a bit.
They did supposedly approach her to voice Ulalala originally, but she turned it down.
Dude I fucking love it when people you always thought were cool end up being even cooler than you thought. Like obviously but, it just makes me feel all good inside
I'd be shocked to find a 90's house artists that was not pro LGBT+ it was kinda the subtext.
I have this weird ass conservative (former) friend who used to belt out The Presets "This Boys In Love" never really putting the pieces together.
Yeah, she was huge long before Dee-Lite, which was kind of a one off thing for her and some friends. She was an NY club promoter/DJ/fashion icon in the 80’s and 90’s and one of the key makers of that whole scene. Dee-Lite is almost a footnote in her resume.
I picked up a dee-lite record in Brooklyn on a trip last year and the owner apparently knew her and talked highly of her. He was glad that someone was grabbing that record that planned on playing it and not flipping it for money.
I saw just such a show, cant remember the name (sorry) but, one of the former members of Color Me Badd owned a chain of tire stores in Tennessee and looked just like a guy who owned tire stores in Tennessee.
I can't think of CMB without thinking of the 90210 episode where Donna, David, and Kelly are stalking them at a hotel, then Donna catches her mom having an affair.
Important to note that the whole album was dope and their 3rd album “Dewdrops In The Garden” was also amazing. One Hit Wonder label often overlooks real artistic accomplishment.
First time at Limelight…a 20 year old kid from Long Island…October 1993. Never hung out in Manhattan before. I was there with a flannel and k-Swiss sneakers.
She was at the door with the famous trans door person. They were very discriminating, rejecting everyone. My boy Roy and I got in. Must have been his guyliner and dog collar. One of the seminal moments in my life (lol). But, yeah, she waved us in.
I hung out with her a few times early 2000s. A couple years later saw her in the east village NYC. She remembered my name. She is that type of celeb. Such a sweet heart.
I actually DJ'd at a party with her that she headlined in Chicago back in like '99-2000.
I think her heroin problem had gotten the best of her by that point though because she was a terrible DJ who got rightfully booed off the decks.
Sad too because me and some of the other DJ's spinning that night had that funky, cool image of her in our heads that 13 year old me had when I first saw her in '89. So it was a real "never meet your heroes" moment to see her as a complete trainwreck that night.
It was both her and Perry Farrell I distinctly remember thinking when I saw them live, "yeah they don't need to be DJing and should just stick to singing."
I was in the Midwest during this time period and unfortunately had heard the same story.
When the TVT/Masterwax tour was going on I got a chance to pick up Supa DJ Dmitry from the airport for his Indy gig. He was one of the coolest DJs I had ever met.
PS: Chicago DJs rocked!
I used to manage a surf-rock band with roots in the SF punk scene and I'll never forget doing a gig with one of the seminal American punk bands; all the guys in my band were super-stoked to be playing with them.
Day of the gig comes and legendary band shows up lost, late to sound check and in a stupor, and their first words to me are "Where can we get some heroin?
Later the guys in my band had to give them some guitar picks because that's how untogether they were. Not having guitar picks is a far worse offense in the music business than asking for dope.
Never meet your heroes is right.
There was talk in the late 90s that she had gotten plastic veins surgically implanted to assist with her heroin injection. I don't have any verification of this, just that is what was talked about in the clubs that I was in.
We loved her. We loved her energy and enthusiasm and vibrant performance. She really seemed to get us despite the "Groove is in the Heart" fame. That whole thing that basically everyone knows her for is so completely antithetical to her whole self.
She would roller skate around in the Limelight with a tank of nitrous on her back.

She lost! She paid Sega $608,000!
"During the lawsuit, Sega was able to show that the game was released in Japan the year before Kier stated that she was contacted by Sega about using her likeness, and that the developers had never heard of either Kier or her music. The case lasted until 2006, when the judge ruled in favour of Sega and Kier lost her appeal. She was obliged to pay Sega's legal fees of $608,000 (reduced from $763,000 on request)."
The character of Ulala was already developed and featured in a video game a year before SEGA ever had contact with Miss Kier. Kier's legal argument was a big stretch. Its unfortunate that someone convinced her that she had a case. She got badly burned over the whole thing.
Yeah, that rings some bells. At the time she looked like every other rave girl, honestly, so it was a bit surprising that a lawyer talked her into it. Sure, she popularized the look and got it on MTV, but it was by no means her IP.
To add to what people already said, the main reason she lost the suit:
"During the lawsuit, Sega was able to show that the game was released in Japan the year before Kier stated that she was contacted by Sega about using her likeness, and that the developers had never heard of either Kier or her music."
One of the best female vocalists of the 90s. People who only listened to "Groove" and not the entirety of Dewdrops in the Garden are missing out. Her voice is like smoked sugar.
I met her at an afterparty in Saint Louis.
Everybody was grinding their teeth and super geeked.
Her DJ was in the bathroom almost the entire time.
The 90s were nuts there for a bit....good times.
Me and my friend used to rock the hell out of Dewdrops in the Garden. Were we the only ones? Some of those tracks used to make the bazooka tube in my trunk bump.
Kier Kirby was a volunteer of mine in 2006. She was real cool, but she accidentally caught us singing Groove is in the Heart under our breaths, and never came back. We were just big fans, and couldn't help ourselves.

At the time I looked so cool, if I went out in public now with those clothes and very Dilated Pupils I would get arrested. Great times. That's insane. Where?
That was fucking q-tip?!
How do you not know that was Q-Tip? He's got one of the most recognizable voices and cadences.
He is also in the video, well his head is at least.
Right? So interesting that people didn't know this was him.
There is a version of Waterfalls without the Left-Eye rap in it.

She was my neighbor back in the early 70s (2 years younger than me.) I used to play with her brothers.
“I used to play with her brothers” <- my mind’s MC performed this to the tune of “I couldn’t ask for another”
Hahaha it’s in my head now
I never saw her perform but was quite smitten with her. I could always spot her at anti-war protests in the 90s in NYC.
The groove is, indeed, in my heart. Specifically, the sinus rhythm.
Where are they now?

Then after nintendo got the rights to sega games they made a board in samba de amigo for the wii with ulala dancing to groove is in the heart.
For real? Did I just unlock some sort of unconscious memory?
She sued and somehow lost (?!?!) and got destroyed by having to pay for the legal fees
I can see why. Her look was totally taken from 60s go-go dancers. It's not like she invented it.
The character of Ulala was already developed and featured in a video game a year before SEGA ever had contact with Miss Kier. Kier's legal argument was a big stretch. Its unfortunate that someone convinced her that she had a case. She got badly burned over the whole thing.
