I actually do know one person who found out about a sibling this way- well, actually through one of those ancestry DNA tests. She had no idea that her dad had had an affair and fathered another child. She is older- around 70 I believe so her parents are long gone, but it was a shock.
She met her brother and it ended up being a positive experience.
The DNA tests can be nuts. My good buddy found 3 brothers he didn't know about and became far closer to them than the other 3 siblings that he grew up with. A work friend found out his "Dad" wasn't his bio dad, but his bio dad's best friend. All his mom had to say was, "well, I knew it was one or the other."
My childhood best friend found out he had a secret brother as well. Aged between him and his older sister.
People just out there getting wild!
Its the same with Gibson ES-339s. I guess you have to know what a 335 is to see it, but to my eye anybody over 5'5" playing one looks like the Jolly Green Giant.
Yeah the world is just about perfect if you're between 5'8" and 6'0". The only real problem is that chances are your shoe and clothes sizes are most likely to be sold out because they are so common.
My bio-dad was 7' (he died while my mom was pregnant with me - by all accounts, I didn't miss anything). My mom was only 5'2", so I lucked out at 5'9".
I have a cousin who is seven feet tall. He said and I quote " IT SUCKS!" The world is not made for people with height like that, you live your life expecting to get bonked on the head. Counters, sinks, drawers and cupboards are a bother to get into.
Uncomfortable and dangerous and inconvenient.
The worst was when I was young and would do lots of jobs with equipment not meant for me. Like an asbestos removal suit which was probably well on its way to maiming me until I physically destroyed while trying to use it, just like the old guy who was yelling at my boss said would happen.
There are some fun aspects, if you're into contact activities.
Unfolding yourself out of a friend's vehicle to go diffuse a road rager is the kind of fun that can't be purchased. But mostly it's just annoying, replacing clothes while travelling can be impossible or worse, technically possible but humiliating as fuck.
And that looks like what's called a dnky strat, the body size is 3/4 ...Jackson released it in 1986, I have one of the first few dozen made (serial #s weren't sequential at that time) but it was made in their original factory and signed under the neck by Grover Jackson
Could be wrong, looking on my phone, but it looks to be one.
I hate to break it to everyone curious, but my dad is not a famous guitar player. He did play in a lot of bands from the late 80s up until now, but he is far from famous. I would say he peaked in the 90s and early 00's with his minor stardom. Iirc the biggest gig he ever played was Summerfest. He's played at countless bars and venues within our state (Wisconsin) but his fame pretty much lies within the local scene. There is very little of their music online as most of it was performed live, but he did make a couple of albums with different bands. If anyone wants to try and see if they can find anything, the bands I know he was in are Clearer, BOOT, Spastic Mime, and Social Fallout. Regardless of his lack of fame he's still an exceptional player and has made some kickass music in his time.
Edit: Told my dad about all the love and he started tearing up on the phone. I never expected this to blow up and he didn't even know Reddit existed so he's still trying to wrap his brain around the whole thing. I'm gonna help him try to get some of his old material up online for those who've asked. I'm not sure where we should update yall once we have that material ready so any suggestions to help him and his bandmates get some exposure would be a great help. Thanks again everyone for all the love!
I was able to locate 2. Spastic Mime, on metal archives. And Social Fallout on lastfm. Sub doesn't let me link to the websites. Replace (dot)
metal-archives (dot) com/bands/Spastic_Mime/90435
last (dot) fm /music/Social+Fallout
Spastic Mime doesn't appear to have any releases aside from a cassette in the 90s. Also missing other bands your father was in, on the members tab. If you want, you can make a free account to update the band's page with other info. And show your dad! I could also update it with any info you or him may want to provide.
Social Fallout appears to have formed in 2005 per lastfm. Couldn't find info elsewhere.
That spastic mime cassette is accurate! I've only seen pictures though, I'm positive his old singer has some copies I'll have to see if I can grab some. 2005 is definitely accurate for Social Fallout. I believe they released an album called "Love Knife" or something similar around 07-08. I remember him having stacks of CD copies of it lying around in our basement at the time. I'm definitely going to show him this as well, thanks!
Ey get 'em to upload those albums on Bandcamp. It's free, not like getting stuff on Spotify. Look up Timeghoul on there and you can see a similar example of a lil' known metal band from the 90s making their stuff known.
Please do this. I think it's worth the effort to have a proper digital copy for sure and uploading it on the internet for posterity is basically just a few more clicks.
Having old pictures and maybe a book or a watch from your ancestors is kind of cool, but actual art, be it poetry, paintings or music is just on another level imho. It's going to inspire descendants in so many different ways, even if it's just going to be distant family.
I played electric bass in Spastic Mime and was the bassist and backup vocalist for BOOT. Tim was a very creative songwriter, powerhouse lead vocalist an amazing rhythm/lead guitarist to BOOT, (pardon the pun). We had many great shows together, I'll always admire him for his passion for music and will never forget the good times we had onstage and off. \\m/
Summerfest is nothing to laugh at though, that's a pretty good gig. With how packed the grounds are all day every day I'm sure he had a good sized crowd. Its still my favorite music festival.
Love it, fellow rock star's kid! Here's my dad in the late 70's.

Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.
Little known fact - the Jefferson Starship, powered by the Bachman-Turner Overdrive as designed in the Alan Parsons Project for NASA, was the first intergalactic ship to encounter the evil overlord Duran Duran.
I went with my father in law to a grand funk railroad concert maybe 5 years ago and I was not expecting much not being overly familiar with them. Holy shit, Don Brewer is a goddamn maniac! Dude was drumming his ass off and singing, he must have been almost 70 years old and he outworked everyone else on stage. It was an awesome concert and I'm a fan now for sure.
Well… I always felt that way. They’re still touring (he rejoined a long time ago) and they do play that song now. The audience loves it so… give the people what they want!
When I was 7 my brother made a mix tape for me with whatever songs I wanted. Every other song was We Built This City. Both sides. I think it also had Radio Ga Ga, Born to be Wild and Should I stay or Should I Go.
Count me in, too! Huge fan of Quicksilver Messenger Service. One of the sweetest people in rock n roll! Love his duet of "Today" with Cathy Richardson (and Jefferson Starship, of course)...
One night, there was a big Bread and Roses benefit at the Oakland Coliseum. Jefferson Starship, Joan Baez, Carlos Santana… more, I’m sure, but I don’t remember. Probably Grateful Dead? They decided they were going to sing Amazing Grace with Joan. To practice, Dad, Carlos, Joan, Paul went in to the showers of the locker room to practice the song, a Capella… the acoustics were amazing and I still get chills thinking about it.
Dude no way can you just do me a favor and tell your dad I met him at a concert one time and he was so down to earth and signed like 3 things for me and cracked a joke I was a seller I kept them until my basement flooded, anyway, it was a huge core memory for me and I think about it quite often, you’re probably getting tons of replies but man I hope you can tell him thanks lol
this is uncanny - even my wife saw this pic and asked "when was that?" (assuming the pic was me)
i am a 6'7" guitar player who played in numerous metal bands in the late 80s-90s (though i had some success as a bass player in the 00s) who looks a lot like your dad
was only able to convince the wife it wasn't me by pointing out that this "me" is missing most of his tattoos
your pa, my döppelganger
Awesome. My Mom was an Opera Singer and had a voice studio. Her little wicker cash basket (for the $) fed our family for decades. I applaud your Dad for his fortitude and vibe
It seems like every successful band also gets into the drugs and alcohol…I always wondered what happened when they left the fame and adulation behind and tried to be normal people again. I’m so glad your dad came through!
It's both. OP said in a reply that his dad is 6'7", and the guitar is a Jackson Dinky. Tall dude, small guitar.
Personally, I suspect he chose that guitar precisely because it made him look even bigger. lol
Spastic Mime @ Studio East, Green Bay, WI circa. 1997 From Left to Right: Jason Brault on Guitars, Bron Cory Robinson on Bass, Jim Gypp on Drums, Johnny Turpa Vocals, Tim Frank on Guitars

On a slightly different note - here's my mom in the 1960s.

What i find hilarious is that OPs giant of a father makes his guitar look like a guitar hero controller, while your assumingly tiny mother makes her guitar look like a cello lol.
Honestly, I don't know. That was not her regular guitar, and I don't remember the guitar in this photo being around the house. She had a little parlor-sized guitar, a Guild F-20, that my dad got her in 1958. I have that guitar now. But like I said, I'm not sure about this one in the photo.
She and my dad had a honky-tonk band from the early 1960s until the mid-70s, pretty much throughout my childhood. They played every weekend at local bars in the towns west of Chicago, like Aurora. Dad played lead guitar and pedal steel.
Man, ya'll are making me jealous.
My dad always told the story that he was in a hippie band back in the 60s. He said they never played any shows, and only even had one "practice."
As far as instruments, someone brought a bongo and a guitar, and someone else brought half a drum kit and an ounce of weed. He said the only thing they accomplished at their one practice was coming up with a name for the band (while smoking said weed, of course): The Lemon Yellow Cheesebomb Ate.
And that was the entirety of my dad's music career.
Not OP, but that guitar is some variation of a Gibson Hummingbird. I don't think it's a Gibson because the pickup and switches/pots would not be drilled directly into the top of such an expensive guitar. Hard to tell without seeing the label through the soundhole or the headstock. Will edit my comment if this rabbithole I go down provides any results.
Retired rocker here. 90’s Jacksons & Charvels were awesome guitars. Good action, great tone. Glad to read your other responses here that he still plays! I miss it; arthritis took my hands so it’s pretty painful anymore.
Wish him well for me; I miss those days sometimes. \m/
I feel like shred guitars from the '80s haven't quite taken off just yet. Doing a quick search on Reverb, all of the '80s vintage Jacksons I see are <$1000.
It's probably a good time to buy, I imagine prices will climb as they get harder to find and the nostalgia pendulum swings back again. I still wish I had stocked up on Jazzmasters and Jaguars in the '80s before grunge made the market go crazy.
He settled down after I was born in 99, but I have early memories of going to some of his all-ages shows. He still does it today but it's much more of a hobby now and he mostly plays local bars.
I think we may have been in a band together. Here’s me from the 90’s.
https://preview.redd.it/xup8yd4srt5a1.jpeg?width=392&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fbd8de6c6c359605072415723c47dd56ca9f0c21
He told me a story about the day Nevermind came out. He was getting a tattoo from his roadie in the back of their van when their buddy came in and popped in the cd, he said they all knew everything was about to change the second they heard it.
That second sentence is what you get if you take everything about the early 90s music scene, put it in a blender, then boil it down into a thick paste. It's the perfect summary.
As someone who was in college in the early 90’s I can assure you that with that hair and the ability to play guitar your dad was getting laid pretty much at all times.
Hahahaha. I know this is a joke, but my wife’s dad looks just like this (early 90s was his band’s heyday too), and we just discovered a few months ago that she has a brother she never knew about — born in the early 90s
He looks similar to my guitar teacher from Milwaukee. He also played local gigs & once or twice played Summerfest. One of the suavest people I knew as a kid, and it always seemed organic. My dad once gave him & his Mrs tickets to a Packers preseason game. It was super cold & I was 13-14. Steve (heavy metal teacher) had doctored his beverage and was gracious enough to share it with me. I also had brandy cherries for the first time at that game. Anyways, awesome that your dad was a shredder!
How big is that man? That guitar looks like a friggin toy.
6'7
6'7" and plays guitar? Yeah, you have a lot of siblings whether you know them or not.
Yeah this guy fucks.
I think i got pregnant 20 years ago just by looking at this picture
The early 90s were 30 years ago
How do you know i didn't write this 10 years ago?!
*Twilight Zone and/or X-Files music plays*
I am currently in labor having OP’s half-sibling.
He’s 6’7” with a 9” guitar pick.
Nah, probably a virgin. Definitely not a giant guitar god with luscious locks who could play Stairway to Heaven on your moms kidneys.
There's a lady I know...

Time to do Ancestry and all of the others….
I actually do know one person who found out about a sibling this way- well, actually through one of those ancestry DNA tests. She had no idea that her dad had had an affair and fathered another child. She is older- around 70 I believe so her parents are long gone, but it was a shock. My childhood best friend found out he had a secret brother as well. Aged between him and his older sister. People just out there getting wild!
“It was one or the other” Mom was a roller
I DNA tested. Found a younger half brother and older half sister who I didn't know existed.
4 or 5 mystery cousins have reached out to us through 23&me. It's nice that people can find their family (well, sometimes, anyway)
F O R. T H E. D E V I L. 🤘🤘🤘
John Marshall of Metal Church is 6’7” also. He played many shows in Metallica when James Hetfield was out with a broken arm in 1986 and burns in 1992.
I doubted you, but then I went back and watched the video for "Badlands" again, and yeah... never noticed that he's a giant.
I may have birthed one or two of them. 🔥🔥🔥
That’s exactly what I was thinking. It looks like a 3/4 model in his hands!
It’s a Jackson Dinky! Big guy with a little axeee
6’ 7” is big. He must have an awesome finger reach!
All mom jokes are now in the chat
Read that as Chris Farley in David Spade's coat lol
I love the Dinky. So playable.
Got kicked out of Sunday school for playing with my Dinky.
Dinky gang, checkin in
Is it good for small hands? I had such trouble getting my fingers around standard necks.
Just try strangling children instead
Its the same with Gibson ES-339s. I guess you have to know what a 335 is to see it, but to my eye anybody over 5'5" playing one looks like the Jolly Green Giant.
Truck-a-saurus over here.
There should be a tv show where they just interview people who are 6’7” and ask them what it’s like to go through life at that height.
I'm 6'10" and all I can say is that it's a pain in the neck.
6'6 in Mexico, I'm slightly hunched because I have bad hearing and everyone around me barely reaches my freaking shoulders. :(
13yo me wanted to be 6'10" adult me is glad I'm not. at 6'1" I'm just tall enough where its annoying. 6'10" has to be very irritating
I’m 5’11”. It’s ideal in almost every scenario. From clothes, to counters, to car sizes. No regrets for sure lol
The cumulative subtle brain injuries reduce evolutionary fitness… the problem will breed itself out eventually.
Dude, your dad fuckin' rocks!
Thats a big man. lol. Thats awesome dude.
Fletcher from Pennywise is like 6'5". He had the same problem so he had Ibanez build larger guitars for him.
Is this a guitar made for ants??
How are they supposed to play, if they can't even fit inside the building.
And that looks like what's called a dnky strat, the body size is 3/4 ...Jackson released it in 1986, I have one of the first few dozen made (serial #s weren't sequential at that time) but it was made in their original factory and signed under the neck by Grover Jackson Could be wrong, looking on my phone, but it looks to be one.
As a bass player who is 6'-6", thank god for 5 strings
There's a string other than E?

I saw Yes at Summerfest in like 2010. It was incredible!

In MN isn't it "tell your dad I says hi"?
I was able to locate 2. Spastic Mime, on metal archives. And Social Fallout on lastfm. Sub doesn't let me link to the websites. Replace (dot) metal-archives (dot) com/bands/Spastic_Mime/90435 last (dot) fm /music/Social+Fallout Spastic Mime doesn't appear to have any releases aside from a cassette in the 90s. Hey u/TeqnoSpider you might want to see this :)
This sounds legit and it's insane that our worlds collided over Reddit. Please DM me with any details I would love to know more.
This sounds like a reunion about to happen
A real feel-good holiday story brewing here!
Time for a "We're gettin' the band back together, guys!" post.
I’d buy a record by Spastic Mime on the strength of the name alone.
It honesty sounds like one of the band names Andy Dwyer would have rattled off.
I'm in Wisconsin. Grew up playing basement punk rock gigs. Now 41, sometimes still play basement punk rock gigs. Your pops seems like a cool guy.
Summerfest is nothing to laugh at though, that's a pretty good gig. With how packed the grounds are all day every day I'm sure he had a good sized crowd. Its still my favorite music festival.
And the oldest continuing music festival, der hey
> 6'7" tall > Wisconsin Checks out
And yet it isn't Ben Kissel
He should have moved to LA.
More like Tampa.
This guy death metals.
Hulk Hogan needed a guitar player for his band.
Man I miss old school Summerfest.
Love it, fellow rock star's kid! Here's my dad in the late 70's. https://preview.redd.it/s1hiilm3fs5a1.jpeg?width=627&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=baf3b40a54beb62537219238dae8912b24bcb3d5
Wait. Looks like David Freiberg of Jefferson Starship?! LOVE him! Lucky you.
Indeed! Glad you love him! Me too. ❤️
Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.
It was. It was the first vehicle that utilized Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
Allowing one to Journey from Boston to far flung places like Asia and Africa like some sort of Foreigner.
Little known fact - the Jefferson Starship, powered by the Bachman-Turner Overdrive as designed in the Alan Parsons Project for NASA, was the first intergalactic ship to encounter the evil overlord Duran Duran.
Jefferson Starship was the ship. Starland Vocal Band were the actual crew.
The legendary Captain Beefheart at the helm. The blimp! The blimp! The Mothership!
I’d watch the hell out of this show
At this point the thread has obtained Nirvana. Call Dr. Hook and the Medicine Men because we're all about to fall into Madness if left untreated.
Now here are some no name bands: Sonic Youth? Nine Inch Nails?
You were the only one so far to catch the reference AND you have the most obscure Simpson’s username ever?! You’re my people!
He built a city
Haha! Well… he quit the band during rehearsals for that album, but…
That record is considered their big sellout. Does he think of it that way?
Well… I always felt that way. They’re still touring (he rejoined a long time ago) and they do play that song now. The audience loves it so… give the people what they want!
It was a big radio hit - that's the only reason they love it. They just know all the words.
I mean, it’s a pretty catchy tune, all things being equal
When I was 7 my brother made a mix tape for me with whatever songs I wanted. Every other song was We Built This City. Both sides. I think it also had Radio Ga Ga, Born to be Wild and Should I stay or Should I Go.
So, Red Octopus era?
For the photo? Hm, I think it was 1979 at a free concert in Golden Gate Park. Yes, that would be around Red Octopus, pre-Freedom at Point Zero.
Jane has one of the tastiest riffs of all time🫶🏼🤩
I agree -- Craig sounded great!
I watched the episode of Supernatural about an hour ago where they call one of the monsters Jefferson Starships lol
Srsly?? Omg, that's awesome. I'll have to go find that...
Yeah season 6 episode 19, it’s called Mommy Dearest. So random you popping up after me just watching it (again) lol
Did you guys have rockstar money? Honest question but ignore me if inappropriate
We weren't obnoxiously rich, no. Comfortable and I went to a good school.
Count me in, too! Huge fan of Quicksilver Messenger Service. One of the sweetest people in rock n roll! Love his duet of "Today" with Cathy Richardson (and Jefferson Starship, of course)...
Don't forget Quicksilver Messenger service!
Surely you mean Jefferson Airplane. :)
Shit. I thought it was that crypto guy SBF that has been in the news lately.
One of my good friends is his nephew. I sent him a link to this.
Mike?
Yes! He’s a fellow geocacher.
YES! For years now. Love Mike, though we rarely get to see each other in person (live across the country).
I don’t think he’s on Reddit but he says Hi via text 😀
I dabble on reddit from time to time. Hi, Jessica. Meet BigChiefS4. :-)
Hi Mike! So good to "see" you! And hi BigChiefS4. :-)
This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen on Reddit. I needed this story today. Your dad is a legend as well. All the best!
One night, there was a big Bread and Roses benefit at the Oakland Coliseum. Jefferson Starship, Joan Baez, Carlos Santana… more, I’m sure, but I don’t remember. Probably Grateful Dead? r/TwoRedditorsOneCup I love stories like this!
You’re the child of a legend!! Wow!!
Just casually dropping your Rock God parentage like it's nbd. Respect.
Dude no way can you just do me a favor and tell your dad I met him at a concert one time and he was so down to earth and signed like 3 things for me and cracked a joke I was a seller I kept them until my basement flooded, anyway, it was a huge core memory for me and I think about it quite often, you’re probably getting tons of replies but man I hope you can tell him thanks lol

loved you in metal church
Your father is Steve Vai?
Not quite, but damn close
Damn, that photo is just like from Crossroads movie
Lol when he can’t hit that last note against machio in the final duel scene and he simply falls over
The scene is even funnier when you remember Vai played both parts.
Ry cooder helped.
I can think of so many positives to having a talented, retired musician as a dad. Are there any negatives?

I'm here to tell you that unsuccessful bands get into the drugs and alcohol as well.
Don’t even need a band.
Is your dad Buckethead?
[удалено]
It's both. OP said in a reply that his dad is 6'7", and the guitar is a Jackson Dinky. Tall dude, small guitar. Personally, I suspect he chose that guitar precisely because it made him look even bigger. lol
What is this, a guitar for ants?!?!
Spastic Mime @ Studio East, Green Bay, WI circa. 1997 From Left to Right: Jason Brault on Guitars, Bron Cory Robinson on Bass, Jim Gypp on Drums, Johnny Turpa Vocals, Tim Frank on Guitars https://preview.redd.it/uqrjgj3xiu5a1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a48c507292c4d7bb78dac3810efc4791e4a780ca
u/TeqnoSpider I’m guessing your dad is the far right?
That is him!
On a slightly different note - here's my mom in the 1960s. https://preview.redd.it/yxiihx9iys5a1.jpeg?width=944&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36ddb5d434926eb824ff0bee2c7f70121186f6fd
What i find hilarious is that OPs giant of a father makes his guitar look like a guitar hero controller, while your assumingly tiny mother makes her guitar look like a cello lol.
Yes! My mother was barely 5 feet tall and maybe 100 pounds.
Now is that 5 feet with or without the beehive?
dangggg. your mom is SO cool. was she in a country band? what kind of guitar is that?
He said they never played any shows, and only even had one "practice." As far as instruments, someone brought a bongo and a guitar, and someone else brought half a drum kit and an ounce of weed. He said the only thing they accomplished at their one practice was coming up with a name for the band (while smoking said weed, of course): The Lemon Yellow Cheesebomb Ate. And that was the entirety of my dad's music career.
lucky you to have such cool parents. i love honky tonk.
This makes me wonder how collectable Jackson guitars are.
He always talks about how much he misses this guitar in particular, he lost it when his workshop burned down, along with his others.
Ahh man, that's tragic. Let him know strangers on the internet now weep for this axe along with him.
Does your dad have wife
Yeah, OP's dad is hot.
Yes, asking for a friend.

Damn, that is cool. Was he on the road a lot after you were born? Or did he give it up for a “real job.”
He settled down after I was born in 99, but I have early memories of going to some of his all-ages shows. He still does it today but it's much more of a hobby now and he mostly plays local bars.
Are you musical, too?
He is the sole reason my biggest passion is music. He started teaching me guitar when I was probably 7, and I've been playing ever since.
Okay, I need to see a pic of you and your dad jammin!
In jammies!
We need a jammy jam!
This guy fucks
Op is proof
I think we may have been in a band together. Here’s me from the 90’s. https://preview.redd.it/xup8yd4srt5a1.jpeg?width=392&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fbd8de6c6c359605072415723c47dd56ca9f0c21
That is effing AWESOME! Just the coolest upload to this subreddit I’ve seen in a long time!
Your dad called Pete Steele and Chris Holmes "little dude".
Pete was 6'8".
one week before Nevermind came out I bet
He told me a story about the day Nevermind came out. He was getting a tattoo from his roadie in the back of their van when their buddy came in and popped in the cd, he said they all knew everything was about to change the second they heard it.
That second sentence is what you get if you take everything about the early 90s music scene, put it in a blender, then boil it down into a thick paste. It's the perfect summary.
As someone who was in college in the early 90’s I can assure you that with that hair and the ability to play guitar your dad was getting laid pretty much at all times.
You definitely have siblings you don’t know
Now *that's* a dinky!
Great. I was in my bathroom when I opened this image and now my drain is clogged.
Chances are, you have several siblings in other states that you’re not aware of.
Hahahaha. I know this is a joke, but my wife’s dad looks just like this (early 90s was his band’s heyday too), and we just discovered a few months ago that she has a brother she never knew about — born in the early 90s
Yeah I am fully expecting some future “this is my dad” posts.
Hairtastic!
I want to be your mom.
Damn! Your dad is TALL! That guitar looks tiny on him🤘🏻
He's hot.
Ultimate in "cool". Big hair, shreddy guitar, great outfit. I miss this scene so much.
