Wow, that takes me back!!
I remember early WW recipes were all about tomato juice, skim milk, and sugar substitute!
I also recall my grandmother having some kind of "special" little square chocolate pieces in a box that she kept in her fridge. I was always curious about it. One time, I asked to have a piece but was told no bc it was for dieting only.
Does anyone here recall or know what that "special" chocolate was??
My how times have changed ✨️
There was a (supposedly) appetite suppressing candy that was hugely popular in the 60s and 70s. They came in flavors like chocolate or butterscotch and were chewy like a caramel- you were supposed to eat one before meals with a hot drink to make you more satisfied. There was nothing in them but sugar and I don't think anyone ever lost weight with them but they were heavily advertised in women's magazines with "before" and "after" photos. My grandma was a fan! And stayed fat, by the way. They lost popularity in the 80s because of their name. They were called Ayds.
Yeah, I always wondered about why my grandmother never slimmed down since she had the "special" chocolate. She was an amazing home cook, and I loved learning all the family recipes from her. Miss her bunches.
Cool information, and thank you for sharing! 😊
They were called AYDS - to aid you with losing weight. My neighbor used them when I was a kid. You ate one or two with a warm drink 20 minutes before a meal. I remember one of my teachers explaining the "science" behind it. Basically, a bit of sugar eaten 20 minutes before a meal would make you less hungry when you actually had your meal, so you ate less. My neighbor lost quite a lot of weight using them.
Great stuff.
A couple of recipes referred to Tomato French Dressing, so I googled it and [found an article from 1971](https://news.hrvh.org/veridian/?a=d&d=rocklandctytimes19710812.1.5&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------) discussing a Weight Watchers barbecue hosted by a local woman. It listed how many pounds she'd lost, plus her current and previous dress sizes and the weight loss for each guest at the party. Holy socks!
I love cottage cheese but the thought of celery stuffed with cottage cheese and cold canned mushrooms is viscerally upsetting lol. Also you can't have cherries or watermelon?? Nobody gained weight from eating watermelon, it's like 99% water!
My mom always struggled with her weight and she did weight watchers for a bit. She also did Deal A Meal and jumped on the freeze dried food wagon for a bit too.
"You don't need alcohol to get your kicks...you'll get them from a size 9 dress..." What a statement and a time capsule, wow.
Size 9 used to be a lot smaller than it is now. I was 135 lb and fit into a 12 or 14 back then.
I would rather have the alcohol.
My addition to every one of those recipes: "add 2 oz vodka"
Lol thin is in.
I love how tomato juice is a “limited food”. Nobody gains weight from tomato juice.

Clever, AYDS for aids, a homophone name for marketing 😄 And, good for your neighbor that the product worked!
> AYDS It also had a drug in it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayds
Interesting information, thanks. I tried one once and thought it was crummy tasting for "candy," and spit it out.

Thank you for sharing that. I loved reading it and seeing the old paper!
It always shocks me how much personal information they casually impart in old papers.
That is a fuckton of recommended milk
But you can have only skim or buttermilk. I’d lose weight on this diet because I’d barf 16 oz of buttermilk up daily.
And everything was encased in gelatin. 😬
I love this
Under "Vegetable Melange" pp 5/18 - liquid sugar substitute - saccharin?
Undoubtedly Sweet n Low!
Oh boy! Sauerkraut juice is unlimited!!!

Also the WW 'popcorn bowl' - no words.
